Chapter 6: Bonds Of Friendship:
Chloe was discharged from the hospital 11:30 that morning, with Steve signing off the paperwork in order to do so. Chloe had gotten her cuts properly patched up and just like that she was up and about as if nothing had happened to her.
Steve couldn't believe how much this woman saw the bright side, especially so soon after being attacked by ruthless and soulless criminals. Mentally, Steve smiled as he couldn't really say much.
After all, he was the pale 95 pound weakling from Brooklyn who would never run away from a fight even when he had little chance of actually winning, hell or even landing a hit.
Steve being the gentleman he was wasted no time in holding Chloe's belongings such as her purse. He wanted her to take it easy regardless whether or not her injuries were self treatable or fatal. Steve just hoped inside his head that he would not come off as a creepy old but young looking dude who was actually from the 1940s trying to fit in with the younger crowd.
Even thought it's been two years since he was thawed out of the ice, it still felt like it was yesterday. Even with a fair amount of time in modern civilization, he still felt like he was out of place.
Fortunately, the one redeeming factor was that Chloe didn't seem to mind his company. In fact, if Steve had guessed it, he'd think Chloe actually loved having him around. Steve had just no idea how correct he was.
Chloe loved having the Captain around. She truly valued him as a friend arguably more than anyone he's encountered since coming out of the ice. Chloe, bandaged and all had the biggest smile on her face and the brightest lightbulb shining out of her head.
"Come with me, Steve. I wanna show you something, or rather bring you somewhere I love going." Chloe was practically dragging Steve along for the ride that was hurricane Chloe. Chloe was so happy, she didn't realized she dragged Steve practically all across Washington D.C. At that point, Chloe did not care, she just wanted herself and Steve and get to wherever it was that she wanted to go.
"Take it easy Chloe." Steve playfully pleaded, ignoring her sharp nails digging into his skin. "The nurse said even if the concussion is minor and will be gone eventually, she wanted you to not be rash and fast."
Chloe only chuckled to herself. She found it adorable that Steve was trying to lecture her, a licensed doctor, scientist and nurse regarding medical and a nurse's advice. Then Chloe began laughing a little more louder.
Steve being the out of touch young, but old man, was completely lost when Chloe randomly began laughing. In fact, Steve had even thought back to some of the books he had picked up in regards to how a man should deal with the modern woman and, courtesy of Natasha Romanoff, although Steve was actually quite unsure of how serious Nat actually was due to her unpredictable and constantly changing attitudes and opinions.
But for now, these books were the best that Steve had for now so he figured that he'd make do with what he had for now, just like when he was a kid.
"Chloe, what's so funny? I'm...down with you...cool kids...today, so let me...know...what's...up?" Steve regretted saying this modern slang almost immediately after saying it. What was I thinking? Steve thought to himself. Steve knew one thing for certain though; this would be the last time he would ever take dating advice or tips on fitting in with youth culture from Nat.
Oh no. Chloe mentally punched and laughed to herself. He's trying to fit in with what he thinks is the cultural norm again. Chloe's smile and fondness for Steve would only grow. But it's adorable. At least Steve's trying his best, even if his slang is terrible.
Chloe then decided it was the perfect time to mess around with Steve and she grinned mischievously, knowing exactly how to do just that. "Get away from me old man, that was about the lamest attempt at trying to be cool I've ever heard!" Got him!
To say Steve's heart drop to the floor was putting it mildly. Steve was completely frozen in awkwardness, with his face completely red from the mega embarrassment he was now enduring on himself. Steve's gut told him not to do this, and he went against his own better judgment.
And now he felt like a fool for getting rid the only non-Avenger or S.H.I.E.L.D. established relationship he had. Steve began processing a way for himself to apologize to Chloe for his behavior, whatever he did wrong. Or even if he did anything wrong at all he thought.
Chloe had to immediately turn around to keep herself from turning red and laughing directly in front of Steve. She internally chuckled, whilst noticing Steve was now keeping his distance. Chloe knew that he was likely trying to figure out how to apologize to her and find out what he did wrong.
Poor Steve, he looks so hurt Chloe mentally said to herself. As funny as it may seem to her, Chloe now felt a little bad because the sight of Steve desperately trying to form a solution for something he was never even wrong for in the first place made her heart break.
"Relax Steve, I'm only kidding," she finally said as she placed her hands on her hips. Chloe also laughed softly at the site of Steve feeling much relieved, and rightfully so.
The Captain let out a deep breath followed by a chuckle. "That was a good one, you almost had me worried for a second Chloe."
Chloe raised a brow. "Almost you say?"
Steve smiled as he put his head down in defeat. "Okay, you got me good, really good."
Chloe smiled triumphantly which was then followed by her hands on her hips. One of the many things she enjoyed about Steve was playing around with him about these silly little things. Chloe was thinking about what other ways she could mess with Steve due to his natural tendencies of not understanding the 21st Century or its culture. Little did Steve know, he was going to be very vulnerable to a series of Chloe's playful teasing and fake-outs in the future.
"I know I did, it's part of my charm. And you're just too sweet and innocent to not play around with Steve." Chloe then nuzzled the Captain's nose to further solidly her point.
"So where are you taking us Chloe? I'd like to know that, especially when you're supposed to be getting some rest."
"Oh you'll see." All Chloe did was giggle, knowing exactly what she was doing whilst pulling Steve along for the ride. All Cap could do was be dragged and wonder just where they were going.
"Are we...at a bookstore?"
Chloe looked at the intrigued Captain, before sporting a welcoming smile. "Yes Steve, this place is like a home away from home away from home."
Steve chuckled, amused and also a little confused by Chloe's wording. "A home away from home away from home?"
Chloe punched Steve in his arm, which hardly phased the captain. "Yeah, if you count New York, D.C., and my endless psychotic love for books, this is technically my third home, now come on, I want you to meet somebody."
Steve shrugged, and with his gentleman instincts immediately kicking in, he opened the door for Chloe. And the first thing they saw was a man with black and greying hair who seemed to be aged around his late fourties' or early fifties.
"Hi Mr Rowan!"
The man's attention was immediately caught by the woman he knew all to well. "Ah, Chloe! There's my favorite little reader, what brings you around these parts today?"
Chloe giggled before explaining her latest venture to the book store. "Oh nothing much, I'm just here to show my gratitude to a friend." Chloe motioned for Steve to say hi, which he did, quietly, but politely waving at the middle aged man.
Mr Rowan smiled. "Of course!" As Chloe and Steve walked around observing the seemingly busy bookstore, Mr Rowan managed to get a closer look at Chloe's face, noticing patched up and healing cuts on her body. "What happened to your face Chloe?"
Almost Immediately, she answered. "Nothing, just ran into a wall badly, that's all." Chloe quickly walked out of Mr Rowan's sight with Steve following closely behind at a normal pace.
"What was that about?" Steve asked.
Chloe sighed softly. "I'm not ready for people to know what happened to me just yet Steve. I'm still shaken up by it."
"No it's okay Chloe, I understand your feelings completely. If you're not ready for your business to be known yet, or known at all, that's your right."
Steve's wise words made the fellow blonde Chloe feel warm and comfortable on the inside. "Thank you Steve, you sure have one interesting way of words." If there's one thing Chloe was spot on with Steve was that he is a comforting individual to be around and if she were being honest, she'd have loved to have meet him before the stars, stripes and super soldier serum. "Come over here Steve, I want to show you something unique."
As per Chloe's instructions, Steve followed her into one of the many aisles of the bookstore, brushing past the many book lovers-customers in the process. If there's one thing Steve was glad that stuck around from the 1940s, it was the never ending popularity of reading and literature, and it seemed to him that Chloe was one of those people that kept it alive and well.
Steve took a look around and noticed that Chloe had leaded him into a surprisingly familiar section in the store; The War and Historical Fiction section.
"Take a look around Steve, this is the section of the store that mainly revolves around World War I, II and Fictional Stories of real life historical events. I wanted to show you this section in the hopes that you'll find a few books for yourself."
"Wow," says Steve, practically amazed at how deeply stocked the historical fiction section is. "This...is a lot."
"Take your time Steve." Chloe smiled reassuringly. "I once spent three hours in here on Valentine's Day in 2006, but that's a longgg story for another day that isn't today."
Steve chuckles at the thought as he backed away in a playful manner. "I'll keep that in mind."
Chloe noticing what Steve was trying to do grinned at him, followed by her hands on her hips. "Your new school social skills are getting a little better now Rogers." Steve opened his mouth to say something, but Chloe stopped him, knowing that Steve would likely inadvertently kill the atmosphere with that cute nativity of his. "Ah ah, easy handsome, don't make me take it back. Now, back to the books, take a look around and see what you like Steve."
As per Chloe's instructions, Steve looked around the historical fiction department of the store. Chloe figured by his look, Steve had become very fascinated with what he had seen thus far. She found his child like innocence adorbale and completely authentic. Steve just did not give off a negative feeling at all whenever Chloe was around him.
After about five or so more minutes of digging, Steve stumbled across a book set in an all to familiar time period in his life:
World War II...
Grabbing the book, Steve examined it closely, with Chloe watching on with small hints of worry and concern that the book may trigger possible War Trauma. The cover of the book had shadow silhouettes of two young boys, which Steve assumed were around the ages of 14-18, both holding up a worn and dirt covered american flag.
Steve flipped the book to it's backside to learn what the book was about. While Steve read the back of the book and it's table of contents, Chloe couldn't help the smile on her face, recognizing this book almost instantly.
"Ahhh, this classic is a favorite of mines; The War-Brokers."
"What's It about?" Steve asked calmly.
Chloe smiled and explained to Steve what the War-Brokers was. "Its one of the most beautiful fictional World War II stories ever told, Steve. The War-Brokers is the story of two African American brothers who own their own Food and Grocery Business with all of their goods being homemade from eggs laid by their own chicken coupe, homegrown vegetables, naturally organic foods, you name It. Their parents both died, with their father dying during World War I, and their mother passing away from an illness, leaving them and their younger sister to grow up all alone."
"Wow, that's...a lot to digest...I know what some of that Is like." Steve immediately began reflecting and comparing his own childhood in contrast with his own. The characters had lost theit father to war, just like he had lost his father to War before he even got to know him. The characters had lost their mother to an illness just like he had lost his mother Sarah to an illness. This book practically mirrored his entire life before the war, before going on ice.
Chloe seeing the emotional toll the book description was taking on Steve wanted to stop her description of the story out of respect for Steve's feelings. Chloe felt that while Steve may be young physically and biologically, he was still an emotional and elder War Veteran that can still feel trauma. "I can stop being descriptive If you want Steve."
Seeing Chloe's apologetic nature, Steve starts to feel kinda bad, knowing that she was only trying to spark his growing interest. "It's fine Chloe, you were only doing the right thing beiny descriptive of the book, you can continue."
"Are you sure?" Chloe calmly asked.
"Positive." Steve replied. "Captain's orders."
Chloe giggled softly. "Look at you, getting better and cuter with your humor, you might upgrade your humor level from 1945 to 1950."
Steve puts his hand on his chest as if he were shot in the heart. "Ouch, that hurt, even if i am that old."
Chloe laughed softly. "Keep it up, and you'll be in the 21st Century in no time." Steve couldn't help the embarrased smile he had now garnered. If there was one thing about Chloe that he liked, It was her innocent style of humor. She knew what to say and how to make Steve truly feel welcomed. Sure he was friendly with Rumlow, Romanoff, the Off-World Thor and even Tony to an extent, but Chloe was just different.
Her innocent and kind-hearted nature combined with her gentle and laid back New Yorker style swagger intrigued Steve to the fullest. In such a short time of meeting, Chloe had broke down a lot of the 21st Century for him better than Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s hired female "educators" ever could.
"And to quickly sum up the book, The overarching plot of the book is the two brothers fighting in World War II in order to earn money and keep their business afloat with the proper funds. Naturally they deal with the typical bullshit like rascism, a rude colenel, and an even more of an asshole Second In Command. Let me just say the progress of the soldiers and the brothers is beautiful as is the ending, so I won't spoil any more, now we'll just have to buy it and you'll see it for yourself."
"Yes ma'am."
"Okay that's book number one downpacked." Chloe said, dropping the book off at the counter by Mr. Rowan. "Grab anything else that interests you, Steve, remember it's all on me."
"Are yo-"
Chloe cut Steve off with quickness. "I already told you, it's one of my ways of repaying you for everything you've done for me in such a short amount of time."
Knowing full and well that he would not be able to change Chloe's mind, Steve conceded with her wishes and continued looking around, finding a couple of books that fit his interest. As per Chloe's instructions, Steve placed his selected items on top of the counter by Mr. Rowan.
Chloe moved with purpose, ultimately selecting a few books from various sections for herself and even a little more for Steve. "Like I said before, These are just a small token of my gratitude for everything you did," she said, handing him the books.
Steve took them with a grateful smile. "You know, you don't have to do this. I was just doing my job."
Before Chloe could respond, a chorus of excited gasps surrounded them. She and Steve turned to see a group of children, aged between five and twelve, their eyes wide with astonishment.
"It's Captain America!" one of them squealed.
Quickly, the small group swelled as more children gathered around. Steve found himself swamped by tiny hands holding out notebooks, scraps of paper, and even the occasional action figure to be autographed.
Steve crouched down to their level, a genuine smile spreading across his face. "Hi, everyone. What's your name?" he asked one little boy, the swarm of kids buzzing with excitement.
For the next twenty minutes, Steve patiently signed autographs, answered questions, and gave high fives. Chloe stood to the side, watching the scene unfold with a sense of wonder. She couldn't help but smile at how naturally Steve interacted with the kids. The two soon departed the book store not long after that, much to the sadness of the kids.
After making their way back home, Chloe and Steve climbed the stairs to her apartment. As Chloe unlocked the door and pushed it open, they were met by two anxious faces—her childhood best friends, Emilia Lopez and Lacy Hansley. Chloe quickly motioned for Steve to hide and remain out of site until further notice, which he did.
"Chloe! You're okay! Bitch, where the hell were you the last couple of days?!" Emilia exclaimed, rushing over to envelop her in a tight hug.
Lacy followed suit, her eyes brimming with relief. "We were so worried!"
Chloe's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "I'm sorry I didn't call you right away, girls. It's been a hectic few days."
Emilia stepped back, placing her hands on her hips. "You think? We've been worried sick, Chloe! You should have called us immediately!"
Lacy gently placed a hand on Emilia's arm. "Let's not overwhelm her. She's been through a lot."
"Overwhelmed my ass!" Emilia started. "I was sharpening my scissors at home when she didn't call me like she normally did. And we brought your groceries inside while you were away, thank you very much."
Lacy could only sigh in annoyance. Emilia, don't bombard Clo with your shit. She's clearly overwhelmed and tired."
Chloe nodded, appreciating Lacy's intervention. "I know, I know. I should have called. Things just got out of hand so quickly. But look," she hesitated for a moment, taking a deep breath. "There's someone I want you both to meet."
Steve, having stayed respectfully in the background during the emotional reunion, stepped forward. "Hi, I'm Steve Rogers," he said, extending a hand with a polite smile.
Emilia and Lacy's eyes widened in unison, their jaws dropping almost comically. "You're… You're Captain America!" Emilia stammered.
Steve chuckled softly. "Last time I checked."
Lacy blinked several times, as if trying to wake up from a dream. "Chloe, you know Captain America?"
Chloe laughed, the tension easing. "It's a long story. But yes, I do."
The four of them gathered in the cozy living room, the atmosphere gradually becoming more relaxed as the initial shock wore off. They chatted about the recent events that led to Chloe's hospitalization, carefully skirting around any classified details from Steve's perspective. It wasn't long before Emilia and Lacy's curiosity overflowed. Emilia then frantically looked around Chloe's shelves.
"Em?" Chloe started, both curious and taken aback, "Why are you fumbling through my records and CDs?"
Emilia sucked her teeth, almost baffled. "Because bitch, we're gonna throw on some jams and ask Steve some questions?"
As Chloe hopelessy tried to stop her friend, Lacy, the polite and well mannered of the trio of friends looked at Steve, apologetically. "Me and Chloe are so sorry about her, She means well, but sometimes she can get out of control and...excited."
Steve lightly chuckled. "Thank you, and It's alright, i know she means well. She cares about her friend." Lacy innocently chuckled.
Soon afterwards, Emilia had thrown on Michael Jackson's Invincible album from 2001 on Chloe's state of the art record player and begun the hot seat, or in Chloe's mind, The Interrogation.
"So, what's it like being a superhero?" Emilia asked, her eyes shining with excitement.
Steve leaned back, considering the question. "Well, it's not all action like in the movies. There's a lot of responsibility and the need to make some tough decisions. But ultimately, it's about making sure people are safe and doing the right thing, even when it's hard."
Emilia nodded, clearly fascinated. "Did you always want to be a superhero?"
Steve smiled wistfully. "Not exactly. I wanted to serve and make a difference. Back in my day, that meant joining the military. Becoming Captain America was just… a result of that desire to help."
"Mhmm," was all Emilia said.
"Emilia," Both Chloe and Lacy said, "Please don't scare him." Once again jointly.
As the evening unfolded, the conversation turned light-hearted and filled with laughter. They shared stories about Chloe's childhood, such as the time she ended shoving her high school Archnemis Into mud on a rainy day. much to Steve's amusement, and found a common ground in their mutual appreciation for books and movies.
Dinner had started off pleasantly, but as the plates began to empty, Emilia's curiosity grew increasingly bold. Chloe noticed the glint in her friend's eye and braced herself, knowing that Emilia's lack of filter could lead to some discomfort.
Emilia leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands as she stared intently at Steve. "So, Steve, I have to ask… What's it like being frozen for seventy years? Like, did you have any dreams? Were you aware of anything?"
Steve shifted slightly in his chair, choosing his words carefully. "It was like falling asleep and then waking up in a different world. I didn't dream or feel anything. One moment I was in 1945, and the next, I'm in the 21st century."
Emilia nodded, satisfied with the answer, but her eyes gleamed with mischief. "Well, now that you're here and all caught up with modern times, how do you find the dating scene? Got any special someone?"
Chloe shot Emilia a warning look, but it went unnoticed. Steve chuckled softly, trying to maintain his composure. "I've been focused on my duties and adjusting to this new world. It hasn't left much room for personal life."
Emilia tilted her head, her curiosity unabated. "Surely someone must have caught your eye. You're Captain America, after all. Ladies must be throwing themselves at you."
Steve shook his head, feeling a bit cornered. "I don't really think about it that way. I'm just like anyone else, trying to figure things out."
Lacy, sensing Steve's discomfort, tried to steer the conversation in a different direction. "So, Steve, what do you think about the advancements in technology? It must be quite a shock, right?"
Steve gave Lacy an appreciative nod. "Absolutely. It's incredible how far things have come. Sometimes it feels like I'm living in a science fiction story."
But Emilia was not to be deterred. She leaned closer, her tone becoming more direct. "C'mon, there must be something juicy you can tell us. Do you have any embarrassing stories from your past? Maybe something from before you became all super-soldier?"
Chloe bit her lip, internally cringing. Steve, ever the gentleman, smiled diplomatically. "I believe we all have our share of embarrassing moments. When I was younger, I wasn't exactly the perfect picture of health. I had asthma, was constantly sick, and got into more than my fair share of trouble trying to prove myself."
Emilia's eyes sparkled with even more curiosity and a hint of what looked like playful daring. "And now? You're practically a Greek god! Speaking of which, do you have plans for the future? You know, settling down, starting a family?"
Steve cleared his throat, feeling the heat rise on the back of his neck. "I haven't given it much thought. Right now, my focus is on my responsibilities and helping where I can."
Chloe could sense that Steve was starting to feel overwhelmed and decided it was time to intervene. "Emilia, give the guy a break," she said with a forced laugh. "He's had a long day."
Emilia pouted playfully but leaned back in her chair, somewhat mollified. "Fine, fine. I was just curious. But all kidding aside, Steve, you've been through a lot, and it's impressive how well you've adjusted."
Steve nodded, grateful for the shift in tone. "Thank you. It's been a journey, and I've been lucky to have good people around to help me along the way."
As they continued their meal, Chloe skillfully kept the conversation focused on neutral topics. They discussed their favorite books and movies, shared funny childhood stories, and debated where to find the best pizza in New York City. Steve found himself genuinely enjoying the evening, despite the occasional intrusive question from Emilia.
Dessert arrived, and they indulged in a decadent chocolate cake. Steve couldn't help but smile at the camaraderie that had developed over the evening. He found himself momentarily lost in thought, feeling a sense of belonging that was rare for him.
After the plates were cleared and the last of the coffee was poured, Emilia took a deep breath and turned her gaze to Steve one more time. "Steve, I hope I didn't make you too uncomfortable. I just tend to speak my mind."
Steve smiled warmly. "It's alright, Emilia. I understand. It's good to be around people who are genuinely curious and honest. It keeps things interesting."
Emilia grinned, clearly relieved. "Good! Because I have one last question that's been bugging me all night."
Chloe's eyes widened, and she braced herself. "Emilia…"
"No, no, it's an innocent one, I promise!" Emilia laughed. She turned to Steve. "What's your favorite ice cream flavor?"
Steve chuckled, visibly relaxing. "Now that's a tough one. I'd have to say mint chocolate chip. It's refreshing and has just the right amount of sweetness."
Emilia nodded, satisfied with his answer. "Good choice. I'll have to remember that if we ever have an ice cream night."
With dinner winding down, Lacy and Emilia began to gather their things. They hugged Chloe tightly, promising to stay in touch and visit more often. "Take care of yourself, Chloe. We're always here for you," Lacy said, her eyes soft with concern.
Chloe nodded, hugging them back. "I will. Thanks for coming over."
Emilia turned to Steve, shaking his hand firmly. "Nice meeting you, Steve. Thanks for putting up with my nosiness."
Steve smiled. "It was nice meeting you too, Emilia. Don't worry, I've faced tougher interrogations from the Nazis."
With a final round of goodbyes, Lacy and Emilia left, leaving Chloe and Steve standing in the quiet of the apartment. The evening had been a whirlwind, but it had ended on a pleasant note.
Chloe looked at Steve, a mixture of gratitude and warmth in her eyes. "Thanks for being such a good sport tonight, Steve. Emilia can be a bit… much sometimes."
Steve laughed softly. "It's alright, Chloe. I enjoyed myself. You have great friends."
Chloe smiled. "Yeah, they're the best. And so are you, Steve."
As Steve made his way to the door, Chloe walked him out, their footsteps echoing softly in the hallway. "Take care, Chloe. And remember, I'm just a phone call away if you need anything."
Chloe nodded, feeling a sense of comfort at his words. "Thank you, Steve. For everything."
With a final nod, Steve stepped out into the night, the crisp air wrapping around him. He turned back briefly to see Chloe watching from the doorway, a soft smile on her face.
"Goodnight, Steve," she called out.
"Goodnight, Chloe," he responded, feeling a warmth spread through him as he made his way down the hall.
As he walked through the quiet streets, Steve reflected on the evening. It had been a unique experience, filled with laughter and genuine connection. Despite Emilia's probing questions, he found himself appreciating the honesty and directness of her approach. It was a stark contrast to the guarded conversations he often had in his line of work.
Back in her apartment, Chloe tidied up the kitchen, and the damn vinyl records Emilia forgot to put back, her mind racing with the events of the day. Meeting Steve had changed her life in ways she hadn't anticipated, and she was grateful for the bond they were forming. She hoped that the friendship they were building would continue to grow, despite the chaos that seemed to follow them both.
As she finally settled into bed, Chloe couldn't help but smile. The sense of normalcy that the evening had brought was a welcomed reprieve from the turbulence of recent events. Sleep came easily, filled with dreams of unexpected friendships and a bright, hopeful future.
"In the end, everything turned out alright." Said Chloe, as she loaded up a classic Disney movie from her childhood and slowly began to fall asleep...
Meanwhile, Steve made his way back to his own place, the city lights guiding him. He felt a deep sense of gratitude for the simple pleasures of the evening – a home-cooked meal, engaging conversation, and the warmth of newfound friends. It was a reminder that even in a world filled with uncertainty, moments of connection and kindness could still shine through.
As he lay in bed, Steve looked out the window at the stars, reflecting on how far he had come and the people who had made the journey worthwhile. He knew that the road ahead would be filled with challenges from S.H.I.E.L.D. And the overall modern world, but he was confident that with friends like Chloe her childhood brethren Emilia, and Lacy, he could face whatever lay ahead with renewed strength and determination.
And with that comforting thought, Steve drifted off to sleep, staring at his trademark iconic shield, ready to tackle a new day with the unwavering spirit of Captain America.
