Chapter 3-Fitting in

A week later

Daryl's P.O.V

The sun was starting to rise in the air. Daryl watched as Merle put some food and water in a bag. "You sure you don't want to come baby brother?" Merle asks his brother.

"Nah, I'll stay here, keep an eye on our shit, hunt around here," Daryl tells him.

"Don't give any of it, to these people, they ain't going to help us. Remember, you ain't got anybody but me. We're just redneck trash to them."

"I know," Daryl says. "I'll stay here or leave for a hunt, they ain't my problem."

"Good," Merle says as he grabs the crossbow that Shane had brought back. "I'll see you in a couple of days," Merle says before he walks towards the woods.

Shane's P.O.V

Shane climbed out of his tent and let out a yawn. "Tired?" Travis asks as he walks up to him.

"I didn't sleep much, spent a couple of hours, looking at other places we can get supplies," Shane tells him. Travis nods as they start to walk up the hills to where the others were starting to eat. Shane sits down in between Lori and Carl.

"So what's the plan today?" Glenn asks.

"Travis, T-dog and I are going to good looking for a place to begin gun training. Glenn, I want you to take a small group and go Fayetteville. Find what you can, but we need more ammo, gas, and food," Shane tells him. "He's going to need a group."

"I'll go," Madison says.

"Me too," Amy says.

"No," Andrea says. "You're going to stay here."

"No, I can help and I'm going too," Amy says. Andrea glares at her sister who stares right back at her and sighs.

"Fine."

"What about Daryl?" Glenn asks. "We could use someone who've dealt with the walkers."

"Him and Merle don't seem like they want to help. But you can ask," Shane says.

"I will," Madison says. Glenn nods as Madison stands up.

Madison's P.O.V

Madison walks down the hill to Daryl who sat on a log making arrows. "What?" Daryl asks harshly.

"We could use some help on a run," Madison says.

"Not interested," Daryl says without looking at her.

"When did it start?" Madison asks Daryl who looks at her confused. "When did your father start beating you?"

Daryl's face darkens as he stands up and puts his knife away. "Leave."

"Mine started before I was ten," Madison says. "He was a drunk, first he would beat my mother and then me," Daryl stares at her. "I'm not looking for your pity, I know you don't want mine. But what your parents did to you. It doesn't define who you are. The world is broken, you can either decide to live alone with your brother or you can try and build a life," Madison says before she starts to walk away but she stops. "You've been in your brothers shadow for most of your life I imagine. Is it going to stay like until you die or are you going to show us who you are?" With those words Madison walks up the hill leaving Daryl staring at her. Madison sits down and they look at her. She shakes her head.

"We need someone to go with them," Shane says.

"I'll go," Jim says making the group look at him. He had been silent for most of the week they had been at the quarry besides helping Dale.

"Alright, you guys leave in thirty minutes."

Glenn's P.O.V

Glenn puts a bag in T-dog's van and looks at Amy and Andrea as Andrea gives Amy her gun. "You got room for one more?" Glenn turns around and looks at Daryl who stood behind him holding his crossbow.

"Yeah," Glenn says. "Grab what you need."

"I got it," Daryl says as he puts his bag in the car. "Where are we going?"

"Fayetteville," Glenn tells him and he nods. Daryl removes his gun.

"Who has the ammo?"

"Dale," Glenn says as he points at the R.V and Daryl nods as he walks away. Madison smirks as he walks up to Glenn.

"You're scared of him," Madison says.

"Yes, I am," Glenn says and Madison chuckles as she puts the bag in the car. "How do you wanna split up?"

"We'll send Amy with Daryl."

"You think that's a good idea?" Glenn asks.

"Amy hasn't been out there yet, Jim was in Atlanta. He's killed a couple of them, you've been on runs. Amy hasn't been out there. But she knows how to shoot, hopefully he'll be able to show her how to fight these things."

"Alright," Glenn says. "Let's go."

Madison nods as she climbs in the van and Daryl comes back down.

Shane's P.O.V

Shane stops his jeep in a field a half and hour away. "This should work," Shane says as he steps out of the jeep.

"It should," Travis says as he looks around. "We're far enough away from any cities or towns. We're going to need some instructors."

"We'll figure that out when we get back, we're going to be training most of that camp. We need some better melee weapons. Pockets knives aren't the best, we get to close to the walkers," Shane says.

"I told Madison that, hopefully they can find some on the run," Travis says.

"Maybe we should move," T-dog says making the two look at him. "We're close to the city, as long as the walkers can find food, they shouldn't leave but we should start looking at somewhere else for us to move the group too," T-dog says.

"We'll look around," Shane says. "Let's look around the area a bit. Make sure there are no surprise before we head back to camp."

Daryl's P.O.V

Daryl climbed out of the van and looked around town. "Alright, let's split up," Madison says as she holds a radio out to Daryl who takes it. "Amy and Daryl and I'll go with Glenn and Jim. Meet back here In four hours," Madison says. Daryl looks at Amy who glances at him and then looks back at Madison. "That alright."

Daryl nods as they start to split up. Daryl walks down the road and Amy follows behind him. Amy stops by a pawnshop and Daryl turns around and looks at her. "What are you doing?" Daryl asks.

"My Dad took me to one of these once, there were some guns, but there was a whole glass display or knives, swords, axes. It couldn't hurt to check."

"Fine," Daryl says as he walks up to the door. He removes his knife and taps it on the glass. A couple of second later a walker hits the glass. Daryl holds his knife out to Amy.

"What are you doing?"

"I ain't gonna be out here with a girl who is too scared to kill these things. So you're either going to kill this one or it's going to kill you," Daryl growls.

"Has anybody ever told you that you're an asshole?" Amy asks Daryl as she takes the knife.

"Yes, a lot of people," Daryl says as he grabs the door. "Ready?"

"Yes," Amy says. Daryl nods as he pulls the door open and the walkers come out. Amy stabs the walker in the head sticking the knife halfway into the walkers head. The walker grabs for Amy grabbing her shirt. Amy pushes the walker back ripping the knife out of it's head. The walkers hit the glass and comes back to Amy who slams the knife into the walkers eye. The walker stops moving as she pulls the knife out and the walker falls to the ground. Amy looks at Daryl panting. "Thanks for the help," Amy says as she drops his knife to the ground in front of his feet and enter the shop. Daryl picks up his knife and follows her.

Madison's P.O.V

Madison hit a walker in the side of the head knocking the walker to the ground. She then slams the hammer down on the head and the walker stops moving. "Damn, Madison," Glenn says after he stabs a walker through the head and Jim puts a tire iron through a walker's eye.

"Glenn, give me the gas can, I'm going to siphon these cars," Jim says. Glenn nods as he walks over to where he set the gas cans down when they saw the walkers and hands them to Jim. Glenn and Madison walk up to a house as Jim siphon's the gas.

"Jim, shout if you need us," Madison says to the man who nods. Madison looks at Glenn and nods. Glenn pushes the door open. "Hello."

The two listen but don't hear anything. "I'll take the upstairs, you take the downstairs," Madison tells Glenn who nods as she goes up the stairs. Madison walks into a bedroom and looks around. The room was empty. Drawers were open and empty. Madison. Madison walks up to the closet and pulls it open. Inside the closet was a man with his back against the wall, a bullet through the side of his head and a snub nose revolver on his hand. Madison grabs the note beside him. "My brother and his family made it out, hopefully the army keeps them safe." Madison sets the note down and tucks the revolver in the back of her pants as she shuts the closet and leaves the room.

Daryl's P.O.V

Daryl hits the butt of his crossbow against the glass case and pulls out a bowie knife. He spins the blade in his hand and looks at Amy who was putting a old rife in her bag. "Hey," Daryl says making her look at him. He holds the knife out to her. "Still sharp and ain't too heavy, should be good for you."

"Thanks," Amy says as she takes the knife. "Is this your way of apologizing for being an asshole."

"Mmmhmm," Daryl hums.

"Apology accepted," Amy says as she grabs a knife sheath out of her bag and puts it around her waste. "You know how to shoot them?"

"Yeah," Daryl says as he takes it. "You ever shoot a rifle?"

"No, just my Dad's handgun," Amy says and Daryl nods as he pulls the lever back. "You put the bullets in her, pull the lever action back up and fire, then pull it back down to eject the casing and do it again," Daryl says. "We should have some ammo for this at the quarry. Hold onto it, it's in good condition."

"Thanks," Amy says as she takes the rifle back. "We should be heading back soon."

Daryl nods as he zips his bag up. "You were right, this was a good place."

"I'm pretty smart," Amy says as they leave the shop.

Shane's P.O.V

Shane stood in front of the jeep as he watched the road. The sky was getting darker. "Food's done," Travis says as he walks up to him.

"They aren't back."

"They will be," Travis says. "Give it a little bit longer," Shane nods as he follows Travis up to the fire. They begin to eat and ten minutes later they hear the van as it pulls it and stops. They climb out of the van and walk up to them.

"Sorry, we're late. We were having fun," Madison says as she sets the bag down. "We got some good stuff. You find somewhere for gun training?"

"Yeah," Shane says as Daryl sets his bag down. He starts to walk back towards the hill.

"Daryl," Amy says making him look at her. "Join us, you're brother isn't there and you shouldn't eat alone."

"We got plenty. Some of it you caught," Dale says. Daryl slowly nods as he walks up to the fire and Dale hands him a bowl.

"We could use another instructor tomorrow," Shane says after a moment while looking at Daryl. "If you're interested."

Daryl nods and Shane nods as they continue to eat preparing for the long day tomorrow.

Thanks for reading. Next chapter the group learns to shoot. As always suggestions, ideas, and feedback are welcomed. Until next time.
