Chapter 4-Gun training

Shane's P.O.V

Shane put his shirt on. "Shane," Lori says from outside his tent.

"I'll be out in a second," Shane says as he grabs his gun and comes out of the tent. "What's up?"

"I don't think Carl should be learning to shoot a gun," Lori tells him.

"Lori, I know why you don't want him to shoot. He's still a kid. We don't know when walkers will come here, and he should know how to shoot," Shane says. "I'll be teaching him."

"Fine, but I am staying right beside him and don't let Daryl teach him, I don't trust him or his brother."

"I don't either, but he's the only other instructor we have," Shane says. "Hopefully him and his brother move on soon."

Lori nods as they walk up to the fire area where Carol was making breakfast. "Good morning," Carol says to the two who nod. "Do I have to learn to shoot?"

"Yes, Carol. You need to learn how to shoot, you can choose whether or not Sophia does but all of the adults need to learn to shoot," Shane tells her and she nods with a sigh. "Once everybody is awake, we'll figure out who will train who and we'll head to the field," Shane tells Carol who nods as he sits down.

Amy's P.O.V

Amy sat in the R.V loading the rifle that she had found at the pawnshop. "Nice gun," Dale says as he walks up to her.

"Thanks," Amy says. "Found it at the pawnshop."

Dale nods as he reaches into the bag he was carrying and holds a glock 17 out to Amy. "Travis told me to hand them out, we should get used to carrying them," Dale says and Amy nods as she takes the gun.

"You are staying here?" Amy asks Dale who nods.

"Yeah, I'll keep an eye on the camp while you guys are gone. How did things go with Daryl yesterday?" Dale asks.

"Good," Amy says as she removes the Bowie knife Daryl have her. "He gave me this."

"Nice knife," Dale says as Amy hands it to him. "How did he act?"

""Why are you asking me questions about Daryl? Do you think he's a bad guy. That he'll try and hurt me," Amy says.

"Just the opposite actually. I think people here are judging him before they know him. Your sister amount them. He could use some friends," Dale says.

"I'm trying," Amy says as Dale hands her the knife. "Let's get out there."

Dale nods as Amy stands up and puts the rifle on her back and walks outside.

Daryl's P.O.V

Daryl put the guts of a rabbit in a bucket. "Early morning hunt?" Madison asks as she stops in front of him.

"I figured you'd be done," Daryl says.

"Done?" Madison asks.

"With this nice guy bullshit," Daryl growls as he stabs his knife into a law.

"You didn't think it was bullshit when you agreed to be an instructor," Madison says.

"I was being stupid. I saw them last night. Looking at me like I would do something. Like I would hurt them, that I was beneath them. Shane's girl looked at me like I was a damn monster," Daryl says as he stands. "My brother is right. It's just him and me."

"He isn't," Madison says. "You're right. Some of them are assholes and they are looking at you like that. But it doesn't mean you are alone. Amy, Glenn and Jim were talking to you. So was T-dog even after all the dirty looks your brother gives him. You want to believe what Merle says is true because it's all you've ever heard but it isn't. Now we could use the help. Please?"

Daryl sighs and looks at her. "Fine but I wanna know something. What happened to your Dad?" Daryl asks. "You got away from him, clearly. Your Mom get custody and run?" Daryl asks.

"No…I killed him," Madison answers and Daryl looks at her in shock. "Like I told you, Daryl. Our past doesn't make us who we are," Madison says before she turns and walks back up the hill and she hears Daryl follow her.

Glenn's P.O.V

Glenn walked up to Daryl and Madison as they walked towards the campfire. "Morning," Glenn says.

"Good morning," Madison says as Daryl nods to him as they sit down.

"Alright we are all here. Carol, will Sophia be joining us?" Shane asks Carol.

"I know you don't want Sophia to carry but she should know the basics. Shane has taught kids younger than Sophia. She will be in good hands," Lori tells her softly and after a moment Carol nods.

"Alright I'll be teaching Carl, Sophia, Eliza and Louis," Shane says. "Daryl will—," Shane trails off as he looks at the redneck.

"He can teach me," Glenn says making Shane look at him.

"Me too," Amy says making Andrea look at her.

"Jim, you wanna go with Daryl?" Shane asks the man who simply nods.

"I'll join him," T-dog says making Daryl look at him. "That a problem?"

"No," Daryl answers as Shane nods.

"Madison will take Lori, Carol, Nick and Alicia and Travis will take Jacqui, Chris, Miranda, Morales, and Andrea. We leave in ten minutes."

Daryl's P.O.V

Daryl stood behind his group. He walked up to T-dog as he shot at the cans. "Both hands on the gun, plant yourself. Take a deep breath and squeeze the trigger," Daryl tells the man who nods as he does what he says. He fires and hits the bottom of the can. "Good job," Daryl says.

"So what's your deal? I see your brother looking at me like I'm a damn monster," T-dog says.

"We don't share the same opinions on some things. You being one of them," Daryl says.

"Good," T-dog says as he reloads the gun. "If you ask me, there is only one thing about your skin that matters now. Whether your skin is rotting or not."

Daryl nods. "We good then?"

"Yeah man we're good," T-dog says as Daryl walks over to Glenn and Jim who were both hitting their targets.

He then walks over to Amy and looks at her can that was filled with bullet holes. "Why are you here? You don't seem to need training," Daryl says.

"My Dad wanted me to be able to defend myself. Taught me how to shoot, fish, some fighting," Amy says as she grabs her rifle off the ground. "I was hoping you could teach me how to shoot this."

Daryl holds his hand out for the rifle and Amy hands it to him. He aims the rifle and fires hitting the can in the middle. The group looked at him as he handed it back to Amy. "Let's stick to handguns, Daryl," Shane says.

"She knows how to shoot a handgun. You worry about your group. I'll worry about mine," Daryl says. Shane was about to speak when they heard growling behind them. Everybody turns around and looks at three walkers.

"I'll—" Shane says.

"I got 'em," Daryl says as he grabs his crossbow off the ground and shoots the first walker through the head. Everybody watches him as he removed his knife and stabbed the second one in the head. He pulled his knife out and grabbed the third ones shirt before he stabbed his knife into its eye. He dropped the body down and pulled his bolt from the walkers head.

"How is that so easy for you? They're people," Lori says harshly.

"They were people," Daryl says as he reloads his crossbow. "They ain't no more, they only want one thing and that is to tear you apart and eat you. If you don't realize that by now. You'll be dead before the month is over," Daryl growls. "Or he will," Daryl says as he points at Shane. "Die protecting your stupid ass."

"Back off," Shane says as he walks towards Daryl.

"Or what?" Daryl growls.

"Enough," Travis says making the two men look at him. "We are out here for a reason. Let's get back to that," Travis tells the two men. Daryl glares at Shane for a moment before he walks back over to his group.

Alicia's P.O.V

Alicia fired the gun and looked at Madison as she walked up to her. "You're doing pretty good," Madison tells her daughter.

"I shouldn't be doing this," Alicia tells her Mom. "I should be getting ready to go to college and going out with Matt."

"I know sweetie," Madison says as she lays her hand on Alicia's shoulder. "But right now we don't have a choice. Maybe everything will go back to normal in a couple of weeks."

"It will never be normal, Mom. They bombed the cities, we saw Atlanta get bombed, so it happened to L.A too, Matt is probably dead, either killed by the bombs or bit by a walker. This is our world now, whether we like it or not," Alicia says before she raises the gun and begins to fire again. Madison sighs as she walks over to Lori.

Shane's P.O.V

Shane pulls his jeep into the camp and climbs out. The group starts to climb out of the cars. "Alright, everybody needs to be carrying a gun and a knife. The parents decide whether their kids carry a gun and a knife," Travis says and everybody nods as they start to walk away from the car. "You and I are going to talk," Travis tells Shane who nods as they walk away from the others.

"What?" Shane asks.

"What is going on with you and Daryl? You barley know the guy but you seem to have it out for him," Travis says.

"You know, Rick and I arrested people like him and his brother all the time. They will only bring trouble. I'm just trying to make sure he knows his place. The only reason he is here is because he brings food, if he didn't, I'd kick him and his fucking brother out of this camp."

"I can't speak for Merle, I haven't said a word to him but Daryl is trying to help, he brings us food, he went on the run, and he taught Amy, Jim, Glenn, and T-dog to shoot. You don't have to like him, but don't be trying to pick fights with him. We don't need that, we have enough problems as it is," Travis tells Shane before he walks away from the man.

Daryl's P.O.V

Daryl sat by his tent with a small fire. He pulled the pan off his the fire and poured some of the food into the bowl. "You can cook?" He looks up at Glenn as he walked up to him.

"I can cook with rabbits and deers," Daryl says.

"They got food up there," Glenn says.

"I don't think Officer Walsh wants to share his food with me," Daryl says. "What do you want?"

"Mind if I eat with you?" Glenn asks Daryl. Daryl stares at the man for a moment before he motions him to sit down. He hands Glenn a bowl.

"So, what do you get out of this? Get some information on us?" Daryl asks.

"I don't get anything, not everybody is out to get you, Daryl. You're a good guy, you're an asshole sometimes, but you're a good guy," Glenn says and Daryl lets out a light chuckle. "You're not alone. We're alive, it means we are on the same team. It doesn't matter if we're white or black, if we were rich or poor, if we grew up in a shitty cabin or a nice house. We're alive, means we have to work together or die."

Daryl stays silent for a moment. "I'm used to being alone, since I was kid, my Dad was a piece of shit and my Mom was a drunk who died when I was a kid. All I had was Merle, and most of the time I didn't even have him. All my life people like you, Amy, Dale. They've looked at me like I'm a piece of trash."

Glenn stays silent as he stares at Daryl. "I don't think you're a piece of trash. You have friends here, Daryl, don't forget that."

Daryl nods as they continue to eat.

Thanks for reading. Next chapter will have a few day timeskip and Merle will return to camp. As always suggestions, ideas, and feedback are welcomed. Until next time.
