Yadama Eichi, 20. This is the age and time a young Japanese man has to choose between being stuck working for a soulless corporation or pursue his dreams (at the risk of losing everything).
Well, I had dared and got somewhere with my 'dream'. If that could be called as such. In a way, all I did was claiming someone else's dream- my grandfather.
He had made a lot of business owning a shop for magazines of various kinds and I still remember the few times I would visit to read manga of all kinds at his shop. The old man was very caring in that regard and, since none of his children had the means to support such a business, I got first hired as an assistant and then given the shop when he passed away.
It's been two years since he died, so it was a bit fresh in my mind when I started to work at the shop. It felt sad to go around and clean the aisles, silence following me as the old man was not around to hurl a joke or two to brighten the day.
Those were indeed tragic days... but one of those saw the element that changed it all.
She was tiny, scrawny, and a little shy nerd that was ten years-old. Her name was Hiiragi Utena, and she was there to find a specific magical girl manga- actually no, she was looking for a specific issue of that manga. A rather unexpected request for a first-time customer, and one I couldn't comply to.
"We don't have the issue here right now, but if you can wait a week then I can have it preordered. Okay?"
She didn't look convinced. Kid was quite young, so I imagined this was her first solo trip to the comic shop. Especially since she expected the shop to have all issues there to begin with. That particular series was an oldie, so it wasn't as readily available as more 'current' ones were.
Bowing her head in dismay, the girl just reminded me of how I looked when I was given that sort of disappointment when I was a little kid myself. It was disheartening, but then I remembered what Grandpa used to do whenever I was 'defeated' by this very sort of stuff.
"Say... magical girls are cool, aren't they?"
The girl perked up and nodded.
"And I like them too because of that so... let's make a deal. If you behave patiently about this and return by next week, I will also add a little reward for that."
Utena tilted her head. "What reward?"
"A magical girl surprise. Trust me, you will love it."
The child left after that and, a week went by without any surprises. The issue came, and so did the 'surprise' I had found from my old collection. Usually I would not consider parting ways with any of that stuff, but I felt like it was a fitting way to welcome a little weeb in the community. And when the little girl returned for the issue, she beamed a little over the yearned book, but then gave me a quizzical look.
"Reward?"
I smiled. "Close your eyes and count up to three."
The girl frowned but then complied as I carefully put the item on the counter mere moments before she opened her eyes to it. Utena's awe skyrocketed as she eyed the pretty figure of the protagonist of the manga. Pretty, with pink eyes, pink hair, pink dress- the classic Mahou Shoujo.
"So?"
"So cool~!" The girl squeaked. "W-Wait, that's... mine?"
"I am giving it to you. Used to be part of my collection. This is a 'figure', there are many series that produce those for fans of their shows. This is about... ten years old - so, you can say it is older than you."
That last comment made the girl pout. "I-I am ten!"
"Oh, you look a bit tiny for being ten but... oh well, if you don't want it-"
"I wanna!" She whined and I chuckled, causing her to mellow up a tiny bit. "Jerk."
"Sure, sure. Still, remember that this has to be treated with care. It's still plastic, so it can either melt if it keeps under the sun for too long or can break if hit too harshly."
She nodded earnestly at both warnings, and I saw her depart from the shop... only to return the next day to get a new issue. This time I had it. And that's how I ended up meeting my most 'notorious' customer, Utena.
For the next four years, Utena (or 'Tena-chan') kept on visiting for new issues, new figurines, and even a few art books released by manga artists. She was an avid reader, and one that was clearly obsessed over the entire genre involving Magical Girls. Nothing crazy, but I could tell the girl was just smitten to the genre and... I blamed society for that. After all, Magical Girls were a real thing in this world.
It was something that came to be decades ago. For some reasons, magical girls came and went, some sticking around for years, but then replaced by a new group that would keep the torch alive. Right now, the magical trio that has been growing in popularity was the 'Tres Magia'.
It was quite the recent group, with the three girls having just started their careers as magical girls a few months ago and, without a doubt, were already doing a fine job.
So... they became Utena's most recent source of 'delight'.
"A-are there more figurines, sensei?"
Ah yes, another important thing. Utena had started to call me sensei since I introduced new shows for her to follow. In a sense, she called me 'sensei' because I was a 'Weeb Veteran' and she was still a 'weeblet'. It was adorable, but people have questioned if I was something of a teacher whenever they heard her address me like that.
"As I told you yesterday, the next batch for the new figurines will come in two months, Tena-chan."
She rested her chin on the counter.
"Why do they take so long to get the good stuff out~?"
"Because it takes money and efforts to pump those babies out," I pointed out. "Also, you already got the six figurines that came out for the first month of Tres Magia. You have other series to follow."
"Y-Yes, but..." Utena huffed. "I just like them since they are real, sensei. I-I mean, how lucky are we that we have magical girls in our town?"
"Considering the overall rise in monsters? Not as much as I would like," I answered cynically. On the one hand, the childish side of me agreed with Utena over this matter - it was cool to have magical girls protecting our town; but then there was also the issue of damage control.
The magical girls didn't patch the damaged infrastructure, and it was quite common for buildings to be inaccessible for weeks. So yes, I can see the 'cool factor', but I was adult enough to know shit wasn't gucci when it comes to fixing the damage of the battles.
"Fine, so... do you have something from Miracle Mimiru?"
"Latest issue came out today," I answered with a smile, seeing her mood improve considerably. "Here you go, Tena-chan."
"Thank you, sensei~."
After paying, Utena left and I felt at ease knowing the girl was going to be engrossed enough in Miracle Mimiru to not ask the status of the new figurines for the Tres Magia. I swear I was starting to hate the group just with how much 'plain' the overall team was compared to previous groups.
I couldn't explain it but... it didn't feel like they were proper magical girls at all for some reasons.
And it didn't help when, the next two days, I was subjected to quite the news regarding this trio. The Tres Magia got beaten not once, but twice!
The first one was quite public as they had been bested by this new villainess, Magia Baiser. She had a particularly skimpy outfit, which was really awkward to look at considering she looked to be a highschooler like the magical girls and... she also looked quite familiar. The second defeat was caught on some CCTV and brought up in the news. Where the first defeat saw the girls 'spanked into losing', the other was a matter of... tickling. They got tickled to defeat.
Something about this new foe sounded a bit too silly to be the classic 'world-conquering villainess'. And, much to my surprise, the very next day after the Tres Magia's second defeat saw me facing off said villainess.
Well, not in combat. It was Sunday, the shop was closed as usual as I would take some hours to clean around to make sure no mold or worse stuff came to haunt the building, and as I was dusting away, I noticed that someone had snuck inside as the front door was half-open. Tensing up, I walked up to close it, looking around for any potential thief but-
"S-Sensei, my name is Magia Baiser! And- And I need your assistance in being a villainess and torment magical girls!"
Here she was, Magia Baiser and-
Wait, 'sensei'?!
There is kind of a thumb rule around magical girls' transformed forms providing a degree of 'disguising' over their identity. Some bullshit magic that made their recognizable appearance not as recognizable... until they said or did something only their public identity would do.
And the only one that would call me sensei is-
"Tena-chan, the fuck you're doing with that ecchi outfit?"
Her smile fell the moment I asked that, shock flaring at my awareness and the girl turned to her mascot.
"H-How does he know that it's me?"
The mascot just 'shrugged'.
"Tena-chan, you're the only one that calls me 'sensei'."
...
"Oh."
"You're still a bit of a klutz, Utena-chan," The mascot remarked, then it turned to me. "Apologies, Eichi-san. My name is Venalita, and I am the one that gave Utena-chan the means to transform 'like' a Magical Girl."
"Did you force her into this? I will have you know I have ways to make you Kyubey-like bastards suffer-"
"Th-They did not force me and..." Utena closed her eyes for a moment, covering her slightly exposed chest. "I liked it, sensei~!"
...
"Goddammit, Tena-chan. There's porn for this."
"But it is good!"
"I care not, this is bad and-"
"And she has no choice but to take a stand now," Venalita interrupted flatly. "She made a splash in the pond, and now she will get noticed by others. Not just the magical girls, but other girls like her."
...
"What's your goal?"
"...I want to see what Utena-chan will do with her powers. That's all."
"Word Domination?" I pressed and the mascot was quick with their responses.
"Nope."
"The destruction of some rivals of the past that made you like that?"
"This is a form I willingly took."
"Are you planning to murder Utena if she 'fails' to keep up your expectations?"
This last question got Utena alarmed as she looked at Venalina and-
"Nah. I am not an idiot. If I feel like she can't do it and doesn't want to go along with it, I would just suppress her powers and remove her memories of what occurred."
That was... somewhat good. If Venalita had been honest. Still, the main issues remained.
"Tena-chan, why the heck did you humiliate the magical girls?"
"T-They attacked me... well, the first time but..." Her breathing got heavier. "But then it became kind of fun~."
I wanted to hear her say something like 'I was forced' or 'this is not me', but all I could tell was one thing and only one thing.
I walked up to her, crouched down a bit so I could stare at her eye to eye at the same head-level and then...
"Tena-chan, you are a depraved sadist. That's why you like this."
...
"I-I am not-"
"You literally took pleasure from humiliating someone. Even the mere notion of them struggling makes you aroused, and it is clear you are addicted to the means to make them suffer within a margin. This doesn't make you a bad person, but you should be careful to not go beyond that line you know you shouldn't cross, got it?"
She offered a nod, her nervous expression morphing in serious one. "O-Okay, sensei."
"I can give you access to the shop for planning but... you will be still restricted from going to the +18 area."
"B-But it can be useful-"
"It would not," Venalita interrupted. "You are just being gluttonous now, Utena-chan."
Utena sighed in defeat but then smiled.
"A-At least you are going to support me... right, sensei?"
I offered a slow nod but...
Fucking hell, this was going to be a tough situation to deal with in the long run.
AN
How a gesture of kindness can... lead to a major fuck up or two. Will Sensei protect his little student? Will Venalita reveal their true identity? And, will Utena reveal her innermost feelings tied to her daddy kink? I want to say next time will answer either of those questions, but the truth is that this story will add more questions early on.
