Prompt: You give me a different fake name every time you come into Starbucks and I just want to know your real name bc ur cute but here I am scrawling "Batman" onto your stupid latte. (AU)
Working at a coffee shop wasn't exactly April's dream job, but it paid the bills - enough to help her make her way through medical school. She just tried to think of it as good customer service experience for when she'd be dealing with patients, and doing what she felt she was actually born to do.
There were days, though, when she enjoyed it - like when she'd see one of her regular customers or someone would generously give her a nice tip. One customer in particular that seemed to perk her up was the cute guy that would come in and always order a latte (sometimes iced, sometimes hot, depending on the weather). She had yet to find out his real name, as for some reason, he seemed intent on giving a different name every time he came in. She wasn't sure if he was just doing it to mess with her, or because he found it rather amusing, but a part of her really wanted to know what it was. He was dreamy in every sense of the word, with his light green eyes and olive skin, but more importantly, he seemed kind. Maybe she was getting ahead of herself there, since after all, she barely knew him and they only ever interacted at her place of work, but she liked to think that she was good at reading people (although some would say she was simply naive).
It was a quiet Friday afternoon when the door chimed and she was graced with his presence. She tried not to look too eager, practically skipping to the front desk before her co-worker Reed could even say anything and putting on her best cheery customer face. "Hi! Just the usual today?"
"Yeah, a medium latte with oat milk, thanks," The man replied.
"Name?"
"Huh?"
"Your name...for the cup?"
"I come in here all the time."
"Yes, and every time you give me a different name. Last week it was Batman," She chuckled, "Are you in witness protection or something? I won't tell."
"No, I'm not that exciting."
"Then what? Is it a really bad name? Like a last name as a first name?"
"Well...actually..."
April's eyes widened, realising that she might've offended him, "Oh, god! I'm so sorry! I'm...I'm sure it's a great name."
Now Jackson couldn't help but find himself amused by the tiny redhead. Their interactions always seemed to bring a smile to his face, which was part of the reason he continued to frequent the coffee shop so much - in hopes that he'd see her. She always seemed so upbeat and genuine, and it didn't hurt that she was easy on the eyes, either.
"Its Jackson. My name is Jackson," He admitted finally.
"Thats great! I mean, it's a nice name. One of the better last names as first names, for sure. It suits you!" She found herself rambling and wanted the ground to swallow her up. Why did she have to be so awkward around the opposite sex?
"Thanks. Guess we both got the short end of the stick when it came to names, huh? I got a last name, you got a month..." He replied jokingly.
"Huh?"
"Your name? It's April, right?"
"Oh!" She paused for a moment, remembering her name tag, "Yeah. My birthday is also in April, go figure."
"Well, it suits you too. There are worse months to be named after, for sure."
She couldn't tell if he was mocking her or just teasing, but the smirk on his face told her that maybe it was just the latter.
As she finished up on his order, she handed him his cup with a soft smile, feeling a little bit giddy inside. This was probably the most they had ever talked, and even then it wasn't a lot, but she couldn't deny that it had already made her day better. It probably seemed pathetic to anyone else.
"Enjoy your latte," She added, watching at he put his card and wallet away. He thanked her before being on his way, and she found herself letting out a sigh that she hadn't even noticed she'd been holding in. God, even she thought she seemed pathetic now.
Reed, who had busied herself with tidying up some of the tables and sweeping the floors quickly spoke up, "Why didn't you get his number already?! You're clearly into him, and he seems like he's into you. He's always asking if you're working when you're not here!"
"Because...because he's probably just being polite! I doubt he's even interested in me like that," April sighed, trying to find ways to busy herself behind the counter until any more customers came in.
"April, trust me, he is. I have way more experience than you, so I know these things," The brunette stated, "If you don't get his number, then I will!"
She frowned, not wanting to be in competition with Reed of all people. As much as she loved her, she was a lot more...open with her sexuality and willing to hook up with men than April was. It was probably one of the reasons that she never had any problem with finding someone, as she had the confidence to just go after what she wanted. Sometimes, April wished some of that confidence could just rub off on her.
"I'll...I'll try, I guess. Thats if he even comes in again..." April replied half-heartedly, "If I embarrass myself, though, then I'm blaming you!"
It was Sunday when April saw Jackson at work again, as she had the afternoon shift after church. The giddy feeling in her stomach returned and she wondered if she'd even have the courage to make any progress with him. Thankfully, Reed wasn't on shift, so she didn't have to deal with her looming presence encouraging her to stick to their agreement.
"Hey Jackson. The usual again?" She stated as he made his way to the counter, trying her best to be nonchalant.
"Sure," He paused for a long moment as she got to work preparing his order. As she began to write on his cup in black marker, he added, "You not gonna ask me to give you my name today?"
"I already know your real name now, silly," She giggled, eyes still on the paper cup.
"Well...how about I give you my number instead?"
Her eyes widened and practically snapped up at the comment, causing her to blink a few times. Was he serious? Was he joking? She wasn't sure, and now she wished Reed really was there for moral support.
"Thats...if you want it. Sorry if its too forward. I just...I like you, and I'd like to get to know you better, if you're interested?"
April's face softened, realising that he was, in fact, being genuine. It was almost cute how he seemed slightly flustered and unsure. Maybe he was a little dorky like she was, after all.
"Yes...I'd love to," She finally replied, handing him his drink, "Uhm...you can put it in my phone?"
She grabbed her cell from under the counter, creating a new contact for him to put his details in. He handed it back and said goodbye before she had much time to comment, and she couldn't help but chuckle at the name he'd put.
Jack-man.
