Harriet decides on her surgical specialty.
April practically jumps when she hears her phone ringing, having expected that Harriet would be calling at some point this week. It had practically become a weekly ritual (and requirement) since their daughter had moved away for college several years ago. She knows that she's incredibly busy with her residency and that it's hard to spend as much time together now that she's getting older, but she cherishes the moments that they do have.
"Hi, bug. How are you?" She answers, putting the phone on speaker and feeling delighted that she can at least see her on FaceTime, even if she's not physically there. Thank god for modern technology.
"I'm good. Tired though," She lets out a yawn and does her best to adjust her eyesight, "Hey, I wanted you to be the first to know...I know I already sort of mentioned being interested, but I'm officially applying for trauma fellowships. I feel like it'll be a good fit for me, and I'm excited."
The redhead feels her eyes beginning to water at the reveal, finding herself overwhelmed as Jackson appears and makes his presence know behind her, placing his hands on her shoulders so that he can be visible to their daughter too, "Hey, I'm here."
"Oh, mom, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you! I thought you'd be happy about this."
April begins to wipe her eyes, trying desperately to calm herself down, "I'm not upset...I-Of course I'm happy! I'm just feeling a lot right now...god, you're so grown up...!"
Jackson rubs her shoulders gently, before reply, "You know what your mom is like. She cries at everything."
"I do not!" She denies, still crying and voice high-pitched, wishing she could will herself to calm down as to not waste time that could be spent talking to their daughter.
Her husband rolls his eyes playfully at her denial, before responding, "We're really happy for you, bug. You'll do great, whatever you do. We love you."
"Thanks, dad, and thanks, mom. I kind of have to go, but I'll try to call back later? Give you some time to process it. Love you both lots and lots."
"Love you more," April practically wails, immediately turning around once Harriet has hung up the phone and pulling her husband into a hug. He can't help but still find her ability to cry at the drop of a hat - no matter what emotion she's experiencing, somewhat amusing, even after all these years.
"Hey, come on. I know it's a lot, but isn't it great that Hattie is following in your footsteps? Everyones always saying she looks like me, but her going into trauma is all you," He says soothingly, rubbing his hand gently up and down her back as she buries her head in his chest.
"I know, I just...I can't believe she's an adult now. She barely even needs us anymore."
"Thats not true. Of course she still needs us, and even if she's not in Boston right now, I am, and I'll always need you."
She can't help but chuckle lightly at that, feeling herself calming down from his embrace, as she pulls back slightly to look up at him, "Me and you," she recalls with a soft smile with he very quickly returns, wiping away some of the remnants of her tears.
"Me and you."
