They set up in the boardroom, pizza spread out between them on the table just like old times. Gwen looked between the two men sat around her, their faces almost completely unchanged making her very aware of her own mortality. But outside of that, the familiarity of them all being together was so nostalgic.
The men sat at a right angle to each other, not touching but mere inches between their fingertips as if each were resisting the urge to reach out and grasp the other.
"I have no idea where to start there's so much I want to know!"
"Well what if we start with how things are right now?"
"Okay. How's Rhys and everyone?"
"Rhys is great he's regional director of Harwoods now, they moved into more modern forms of transport and he moved with the times bless him" Gwen smiled proudly, "Our son Lloyd is in uni at the moment, first year studying engineering. And of course, Anwen joined us here. She's doing brilliantly, she's a little computer genius, can't imagine where she got that from. Her and Evie are like sisters"
Jack smiled, "That's nice that they have each other. They're about the same age then?"
"Evie's birthday is the day we appeared, at least that's what we've always gone with. She'll turn 21 in February. Anwen turns 22 in March. So they've been inseparable since they were toddlers" Gwen smiled at the memories, meeting Ianto's eyes as he relived it too.
"Having Gwen with Anwen was a huge help, raising them together almost. Definitely handy to have aunty Gwen in the teenage years" he said with a grin, his face slipping as he saw the look on Jack's face.
"I could've helped" Jack murmured quietly, "I could've been there"
"I know that now, Jack" Ianto finally reached out and took his hand "I took that from you and if I could go back and change that I would"
"I understand why you did it Yan" Jack squeezed his hand, "I'm still trying to absorb the fact that I have a 20 year old kid"
"I can imagine, it still hits me every day to be honest" Ianto nodded,
"I just can't wait to get to know her"
"She's amazing Jack" Ianto smiled, and the pride and love he felt was written all over his face, "She's intelligent, fiery, compassionate, bloody stubborn but just…"
"She's the perfect mix of the two of you" Gwen finished off with a smile. Jack grinned at her,
"You have no idea how happy I am to see you two" he looked between them, "You were always so much more than a team you were my family. I know we have a lot to work through"
"We do but I hope we can have the chance" Ianto murmured, meeting his eyes to convey his feelings as much as he could. Jack brought their still joined hands up to his lips in answer.
"Don't go getting all soppy on me now you two" Gwen teased, "we have catching up to do"
"Indeed" Jack switched back into leader mode immediately, "come on then team, catch me up!"
And before they knew it, morning was breaking over the Bay. Jack and Ianto headed up to look out over the water as the sun rose, basking in the sea air. It was the early hours, and Mermaid Quay was almost deserted, casting an almost eerie silence through the air.
"Its even more beautiful than I'd remembered" Jack sighed, leaning over the railings out into the sunrise,
"It always is this time of the morning, before people start milling about and spoiling all the calm"
"It feels exactly the same and yet completely different all at once"
"Not much has actually changed around here, technology has improved and space is a lot more accessible I suppose but locally the people haven't changed a bit"
"Just as it should be then" Jack smiled softly, leaning into Ianto's side. Having him alive and well, feeling his warmth and hearing his heartbeat strong in his chest, was something he was still getting used to, and while his feelings around the man were all kinds of confused right now, he couldn't help but think the world would always be so much brighter with Ianto Jones in it. The Welshman shifted his weight nervously, shoving his hands into his pockets,
"Jack, I was thinking… I know this seems a bit silly but um…. dinner, a movie…"
Jack chuckled, "are you asking me out on a date?"
Ianto smiled sheepishly "interested?"
"Absolutely"
"ok…great"
"excellent" Jack nodded, "we should probably get back down there right?"
"Yep" Ianto span on his heel to head to the tower, "They'll probably all be in shortly. You should meet the rest of the team"
"Yeah that'd be great" Jack nodded, "I'd love to meet them all, but there's the most important thing first" Jack grasped Ianto's hand tightly, trying to stem his own nerves,
"I'd like to properly meet our daughter"
