And then the kidnapping of a loved one instigated by somebody with an old grudge brings all our heroes to their knees. In the midst of the trauma, an unexpected romance (or two) develops.

A new casino is slated to come to Stockton. Nick, Jarrod and Heath will all take their chances on love but adultery, witchcraft, deceit, intolerance, murder and gossip are the hands they are dealt.

Upon an accidental meeting, Nick develops a crush on and later falls in love with an Italian woman who recently arrived in the United States with her family & settled in Stockton. A few weeks after Season One's "The Brawlers," Heath is fed up with Nick's arrogance. Contrite Nick offers to leave home for six months, change his name, and go where no one knows him. He takes little money and dresses as a saddle tramp, intent on learning what it's like to live without money, without the Barkley name, and without his family to fall back on.

It's a difficult past Lucy Layton and the Barkleys - especially Nick and Jarrod - have to conquer to move forward.

This is just a fluff piece with a little bit of drama, a little bit of romance, a little bit of humor, and a whole lot of puppy love. And family drama, of course. Always family drama. Includes all the Barkleys except for Eugene. Rated T because adult topics are discussed.

Alternative storyline that attempts to right the wrongs that take place during "The Guilt of Matt Bentell" episode. This story begins right after the Barkleys order Heath to accompany Matt Bentell to the lumber camp. Note: This one-chapter story references situations from "His Right Arm" but can still stand alone.
