In her bedroom, Ms. Knight engages in mental preparation for a significant moment that will impact both her life and that of her children. As a single mother who relocated from Minnesota to Los Angeles, California, she has often yearned for a romantic connection akin to those depicted in her beloved romantic comedies and the numerous romantic novels she possesses. Her fortunes shift when she encounters a courteous and charming gentleman named Mark at a coffee shop on a Monday afternoon. They converse throughout their time there, sharing personal anecdotes and discovering surprising commonalities as single parents. They agree to exchange phone numbers. Over the following weeks, they communicate via text and ultimately decide to disclose their relationship to their children.

On Tuesday afternoon, Ms. Knight and Mark are in Apartment 2J, preparing to share significant news with their children.

"Are you certain this is the right moment for this? I'm feeling uncertain about my readiness. Are you prepared?" Mark inquires anxiously.

"Yes, it is indeed time. Do your children know how to reach this location? The buses frequently operate in this area," Ms. Knight responds.

"No, I am not comfortable with them taking the bus alone just yet, aside from the school bus. One of my secretaries will bring them over," Mark explains. "In the meantime, how about we prepare a special dinner to help them adjust to the idea of our relationship?"

"That sounds like an excellent plan, Mark. We should include all of their favorite dishes. I will prepare my children's favorites, and you can handle the favorites of your two," Ms. Knight suggests.

"Do we have all the necessary ingredients? My children do not exactly follow a healthy diet," Mark remarks.

"Neither do mine," Ms. Knight replies as she opens the refrigerator. "We have corn dogs, pizza, and chicken nuggets. Those are popular with my kids. What about yours? What do they enjoy?"

"Pretty much the same. My daughter has recently developed a taste for hot pockets, while my son has become quite fond of more exotic dishes like curry," Mark shares.

"I appreciate that your son is broadening his culinary horizons with foods typically found in European countries. What sparked his interest?" Ms. Knight asks.

"He participates in the home economics class at school, where they prepare a variety of exotic and rare dishes. One day, he came home raving about how delicious the curry was. He mentioned that his friend Jack from Australia taught the class how to make it," Mark explains.

"That is truly wonderful. Does your daughter have any close friends at school? What are her interests?" Ms. Knight inquires while preparing the food for cooking.

"She is a member of both the school dance and lacrosse teams, serving as captain for each. Her friends Maya, Zuri, Leanna, Samantha, and Bethany are on the teams with her. My son's friends from Home Economics include Jordan, Cameron, Garrett, Mikey, and Lenny. They also participate together in the school baseball and bowling teams, with my son as the captain of both. My daughter enjoys animals, drawing, and fashion, while my son is passionate about sports, video games, and chess," Mark responds.

"I can imagine that with all those activities, you must spend a lot of time driving them to practices and cheering from the stands. They certainly keep you occupied, don't they?" Ms. Knight remarks.

"Indeed, and I cherish every moment of it," Mark replies. "There is nothing I wouldn't do for my children; they are my entire world."

"That is incredibly heartwarming," Ms. Knight comments.

Two hours later, Kendall, James, Carlos, Logan, and Katie entered the apartment, their expressions a mix of surprise and confusion as they found Mark alone in the kitchen, engrossed in his culinary endeavors, completely unaware of their presence. Katie, ever the bold one, seized her Nerf gun and aimed it at him.

"Who are you?! What are you doing here?!" she demanded, her finger poised on the trigger, ready to unleash a barrage of foam projectiles.

Mark paused, startled by the sudden confrontation. "Whoa, I apologize for the surprise, kids. I'm Mark," he replied, attempting to diffuse the tension.

"Greetings, Mark. Now, why are you here? We need an answer," Katie insisted, her weapon unwavering.

"I believe it's best if your mother clarifies that," Mark suggested calmly.

"Mom! There's an unfamiliar person in our apartment! We should call the police immediately!" Kendall exclaimed, casting a wary glance at Mark. "Don't you dare move."

Just then, Ms. Knight emerged from her room. "There's no need for alarm or to aim that Nerf gun at Mark. I know him; everything is perfectly fine," she reassured them.

Kendall and the others remained skeptical, their trust in Mark still unestablished. A knock echoed through the apartment, and James opened the door to reveal a teenage boy and a pre-teen girl.

"Are you two lost?" he inquired, eyeing them curiously.

"They're not lost; they're my children," Mark clarified, gesturing for them to enter.

"You have children?" Kendall asked, his attention shifting to the table laden with an array of their favorite dishes. "Mom, what on earth is happening here?"

"Allow me to elucidate everything once we are all comfortably seated at the dining table," Ms. Knight declares.

Kendall and the others promptly stow their bookbags in their rooms before gathering around the table.

"To commence, I would like my children to introduce themselves," Mark suggests.

"I'm Lucas, aged 14. It's a pleasure to meet you all," Lucas states with a courteous demeanor.

Following her brother's lead, Audrey adds, "I'm Audrey, and I'm 12." She mirrors his politeness.

"What a delight it is to finally make your acquaintance, Lucas and Audrey," Ms. Knight responds warmly.

"I can hardly believe it! I'm in the apartment of Big Time Rush. This is absolutely amazing! I'm a massive fan," Audrey exclaims with uncontainable enthusiasm.

"It's always a joy to meet a devoted fan," Kendall replies with a smile.

"Children, I need you to pay close attention. Over the past few weeks, Mark and I have embarked on a romantic relationship," Ms. Knight announces.

Kendall and James react with a comical spit-take, while Logan, Carlos, and Katie stare in astonishment. Lucas and Audrey look on, bewildered by the revelation.

"I anticipated this reaction. We seem to be receiving a variety of responses," Mark observes.

"Hold on a moment, Mom. Are you saying this man is your boyfriend? You've been secretly dating and chose not to inform us until now? What's going on? I'm not pleased with this," Kendall retorts, crossing his arms in disappointment.

Ms. Knight gracefully expresses, "Mark and I have been contemplating the opportune moment to share the news of our relationship with all of you. I sincerely apologize for the delay, but I assure you, he is a truly wonderful man. I kindly ask that you extend your warmth to him and his children, allowing them the chance to connect with you."

With a resigned sigh, Kendall replies, "Alright then. Lucas, what are some of your favorite pastimes?"

"Video games, chess, and swimming," Lucas responds.

"We share a passion for video games as well. What's your top pick?" James inquires.

"Mario Kart," Lucas answers.

"Man, we play that constantly!" Carlos exclaims with enthusiasm.

"It's incredibly enjoyable. Do you have any other favorites? You mentioned chess; do you also enjoy sudoku?" Logan asks.

"Absolutely, I do. How about you?" Lucas replies.

"Indeed, I relish the challenge of stimulating my mind," Logan states.

"Logie, you're the brightest kid I know. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly you solve sudoku puzzles," Carlos compliments.

"Logie?" Lucas questions. "Why does he call you that?"

"That's a special nickname he has for me. He's the only one who uses it. Kendall and James don't bother, nor does Katie. I call him Carlitos, and I've dubbed Kendall as Kenny. James doesn't really have one, aside from the occasional buddy or bro, and I affectionately call Katie; Katie-Bear," Logan explains.

"Wow, those nicknames are quite imaginative," Audrey remarks.

"Thank you," Logan replies.

"What activities bring you joy, Katie?" Audrey inquires.

"I enjoy spending time with my closest friend, Tyler," Katie replies.

"Is it possible for us to meet him?" Lucas asks with curiosity.

"Of course, he's on his way over to study with me," Katie responds.

Just five minutes later, Tyler makes his entrance.

"Ah, we know that fellow! He's the chubby redhead from those juice box commercials," Lucas remarks.

Tyler's eyes well up with tears. "I'm not chubby! I simply have a hearty appetite! Who is this rude person, Katie?" he retorts.

"That's Lucas, and he's about to find himself unwelcome in this apartment," Katie says, her gaze sharp as she defends her friend.

"Lucas Allen Cunningham, that was utterly disrespectful! You must apologize at once!" Mark exclaims, his voice filled with indignation.

"I sincerely apologize, Tyler. I never intended to offend you. I truly admire your talent and consider you fortunate to be featured in those commercials. Please accept my apology," Lucas says earnestly.

Tyler sniffs and wipes his nose. "You're not the first to comment on my weight upon meeting me, and you certainly won't be the last. When I encounter someone new, I wish they wouldn't focus on my appearance. I'm aware of my size! Do you think those who are overweight are oblivious to it? I know how I appear," Tyler expresses with a sigh. "But I choose to forgive you because it's the right thing to do."

"Thanks, Tyler," Lucas acknowledges gratefully.

"You're welcome. What brings you to the Palm Woods? Are you officially moving in?" Tyler inquires curiously.

"Not quite, just here to visit with my dad and sister Audrey," Lucas explains.

"Hello, Tyler," Audrey greets warmly.

"Hi there. I'm still a bit confused about the whole situation, to be honest," Tyler admits.

"Their dad and my mom are dating. This fancy dinner was their way of announcing it to everyone. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it," Katie explains with a hint of disbelief.

"Well, congratulations to you, Ms.Knight," Tyler offers his best wishes, trying to be supportive.

"Thank you, darling," Ms. Knight responds, understanding his struggle to comprehend the news.

"Father, I yearn to venture into the Palm Woods and connect with the other children residing here," Audrey expresses with enthusiasm.

"My dear, the hour is growing late. Tomorrow would be more suitable. I will be occupied with work, but Rebecca can kindly drop you and Lucas off here once more, just as she did earlier today," Mark replies with a gentle tone.

"Alright, that works for me," Audrey concedes.

"We must return home so you and Lucas can attend to your homework," Mark reminds them.

"Ugh! That's so tedious, Dad," Lucas groans in protest.

"I completely understand, my friend. Homework isn't exactly my favorite pastime either," James chimes in. "Logan, however, is the academic among us—he revels in learning and is perpetually engrossed in a book. His vocabulary is truly astonishing, akin to that of a living encyclopedia."

"Please don't portray me as a pretentious know-it-all, James. You know how that label leads to teasing," Logan interjects, his cheeks tinged with embarrassment.

"My apologies, Logan, but it's the truth. You are genuinely a delightful friend to have. I intended it as a compliment," James reassures him.

"You did, and I am grateful for that. I just sometimes feel a bit self-conscious about how I'm perceived," Logan admits.

"I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, Mark, Lucas, and Audrey. Thank you for gracing my home with your presence," Ms. Knight remarks.

"What a delightful dinner this has been. Next time, I shall host at my residence. I must confess, my culinary skills may not rival a five-star chef, but I believe I can create a meal that would impress even Bobby Flay or Gordon Ramsay," Mark responds.

"Your confidence is truly commendable," Ms. Knight replies.

"Thank you. Kendall, it was a pleasure to meet you and your family. Your mother mentioned your passion for hockey," Mark continues.

"Indeed, I was the captain of my high school team back in Minnesota. However, that title was taken away the moment I relocated to California," Kendall explains.

"Why do you say that?" Mark inquires.

"Because the Palm Woods school lacks any sports teams. Without a team, I cannot hold the title of captain," Kendall clarifies.

"That is not the case at all. Your entire demeanor radiates leadership. It's evident that you are the one among your friends who speaks up and offers guidance. You four form a team, with or without your hockey equipment," Mark asserts.

"Thank you, Mr. Mark. I'm beginning to see that you genuinely care for my mother. While I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of you dating her just yet, I'm sure I'll come around once I adjust to the surprise of it all," Kendall admits.

"I value your candor, Kendall," Mark replies as he departs with Lucas and Audrey.

Tyler departs once he finishes his homework alongside Katie.

Ms. Knight is scrubbing the dishes with the help of Kendall, James, Carlos, and Logan. Katie lends a hand as well. "So, what are your thoughts on Mark? Do you guys like him?" she asks.

"I'm not sure, Mom. First impressions are important, and he comes off as kind and courteous, but what if it's all an act? Dating someone with children from a previous relationship is complex. How can we be sure we can trust him? And Lucas, his son, immediately judged Tyler based on his appearance. I don't trust a kid who body shames others," Kendall expresses.

"But Tyler forgave him, remember?" Ms. Knight reminds.

"Yes, I know, but it was still unnecessary for Lucas to comment on Tyler's body size in the first place. It was completely uncalled for," Kendall sighs.

"I agree. Tyler is my best friend, and I have to protect his feelings. I'm not sure any of us should trust Lucas. Audrey, on the other hand, seems very nice. I like her," Katie chimes in.

"Listen, I understand that me dating Mark is a major change for all of us, but I ask that you please keep an open mind," Ms. Knight pleads.

"We're all pretty drained, mom. We'll give it a shot, but no promises on fully accepting it right away. It'll take time and patience," Kendall responds.

"I appreciate your willingness to try. Thank you for being open to this new chapter in our lives. Good night," Ms. Knight says.
