The next morning in class...
"You doing okay, Kendall? You seem bothered by something," Jo inquires.
"Could it be he's just permanently unpleasant?" Jett interjects, followed by a laugh.
"Could it be you're permanently obnoxious?" Kendall fires back, a frown etched on his face.
"Just you wait, one day I'll win Jo over," Jett boasts.
"She's not a prize, she's a person. Don't treat her like she's something to win," Kendall remarks, rolling his eyes before turning to Jo. "I'll explain later what's really bothering me."
"Sounds good," Jo agrees.
As Palm Woods Park basked in the fading afternoon sun...
"My mother has found herself a new companion. A gentleman with not one, but two offspring. A 14-year-old lad by the name of Lucas and a 12-year-old lass named Audrey. They all graced us with their presence at dinner last night," Kendall recites the events that transpired.
"Quite the revelation. Tell me, do you find yourself fond of your mother's new paramour?" Jo inquires.
"I cannot say for certain just yet. I must first ascertain if he shall treat my mother with the utmost care and respect. Being a parent does not automatically equate to being kind to those not of your kin. He seemed amiable last night, but one evening of civility does not guarantee a lifetime of it," Kendall deliberates.
"You make a valid point. I do look forward to meeting Lucas and Audrey, to assess their characters for myself. I want to determine if they are deserving of our companionship," Jo expresses.
"They shall be arriving shortly. Their father's assistant, Rebecca, will be transporting them once again, as she did the previous day," Kendall reveals.
An hour later, Lucas and Audrey arrive at Palm Woods Park and spot Logan sitting alone against a tree.
"Do you always sit by yourself reading some tedious book?" Lucas remarks, inadvertently startling Logan from his concentration.
"Wow, you surprised me. I didn't notice you two approaching. And yes, I find solitude quite peaceful, and my book is not tedious. I would appreciate it if you refrained from calling it that. Do you need something from me?" Logan replies.
"Not particularly. We were just searching for the more interesting members of Big Time Rush. You seem rather dull," Lucas responds.
"I'm not sure why you perceive me that way. Just because I'm sitting alone with a book doesn't imply that I'm dull," Logan counters.
"It's almost as if you're putting on a facade when you perform on stage. You're lively, dancing to the music, and executing backflips. Yet here you are, alone in the grass with a book that lacks pictures. That's typical nerd behavior," Lucas comments.
"Nerd?! I detest that term. Being an avid reader does not equate to being a nerd. You are correct that I behave differently on stage. I enjoy dancing, and my favorite part of performing is doing backflips, but my activities outside of that do not define me as a boring nerd," Logan asserts.
"I apologize for my brother; he is quite selective about his friends," Audrey interjects. "Lucas, please stop being so judgmental towards him."
"It's merely my honest assessment of him. What's wrong with that?" Lucas replies defensively.
"You can express your opinion without being offensive," Audrey retorts.
"Save the lecture, Audrey. I'll take my leave. I know when I'm not welcome. It's fine; I'm accustomed to being labeled as a nerd," Logan states as he stands up with a sigh. "I genuinely thought we could be friends, Lucas, but I was mistaken." He then walks away in frustration.
"Dad specifically instructed us to behave ourselves, Lucas!" Audrey exclaims. "You need to apologize to Logan before he shares what you said with his friends or Ms. Knight!"
"I have no idea where he went. How am I supposed to apologize if I can't find him?" Lucas replies.
"Just ask around. Someone must have seen him leave," Audrey suggests.
"Alright, let's go. I need your help to find him," Lucas responds.
Meanwhile, at the pool area...
"And then he started criticizing me for being so passionate about reading, claiming it makes me a nerd in real life, and that my onstage performance is just a facade," Logan vents to Camille, still upset about his earlier encounter with Lucas.
"This kid sounds like a real problem," Camille remarks. "How old is he?"
"He's 14," Logan replies. "Just because he's two years younger than me doesn't give him the right to act like a bully. Anyone, regardless of age, who enjoys being cruel to others should feel ashamed."
"I completely agree with you," Camille says. "I'll grab us some lemonades. Just try to take it easy." She stands up and heads to the snack cart.
Lucas and Audrey approach the pool area, where they spot Logan.
"Logan, we need to have a conversation," Lucas states as he moves closer to him.
"I'm not in the mood to talk to you. Haven't you already criticized me enough?" Logan replies.
"That's precisely why I was searching for you; I wanted to apologize for my earlier behavior," Lucas clarifies.
"I require some space. Please leave me be," Logan responds.
"Apologies for the delay. The vendor ran out of ice and needed to refill the container before preparing more lemonade. Then the blender malfunctioned, which caused further delays," Camille explains as she hands Logan his lemonade.
"No problem, Cami. Thank you," Logan replies.
"Who are your new acquaintances?" Camille inquires.
"These are Lucas and Audrey. Lucas is the one I mentioned to you. Currently, and likely for the foreseeable future, he is not my friend. However, Audrey is, as she hasn't said anything that makes me want to tear my hair out," Logan explains.
"So, you're Camille Roberts? How much is Logan compensating you to be his girlfriend?" Lucas questions.
"Excuse me?" Camille responds, taken aback by his phrasing.
"This must be a publicity stunt, right? You're an actress from Witches of Rowdale Drive, and he's from a well-known boy band. With a massive teenage fanbase, you both are likely pretending to be a couple to enhance your popularity," Lucas asserts.
Logan winces, anticipating Camille's impending outburst.
After a moment of stunned silence, she retorts, "Absolutely not! This is not a fabricated relationship! We are genuinely dating! How dare you assume otherwise! What leads you to believe he is compensating me?"
"He's not exactly a heartthrob," Lucas remarks.
"The same could be said about you. What of it? Logan doesn't need to have a muscular physique to attract me. I was drawn to him for his wonderful personality. He is intelligent, humorous, and kind," Camille defends.
"Let's go, Camille. I've had enough of this," Logan states, rising and walking away with her.
Audrey's voice dripped with anger as she scolded Lucas for his latest mishap.
Lucas, feeling guilty, acknowledged their rocky start without their father.
But Audrey wasn't having it. She made it clear that Lucas was the sole perpetrator of their troubles since arriving. She threatened to inform their dad, leaving Lucas to promise to make things right.
"You better," Audrey warned, her tone leaving no room for error.
In Apartment 2J, Logan recounts his distressing encounter with Lucas to Kendall, James, and Carlos.
"Did he really say all of that to you? That kid is truly getting on my nerves," Kendall remarks. "Do not worry, Logan. We will inform Mr. Mark about everything that transpired between you and Lucas today."
"I would prefer not to come across as a snitch," Logan replies.
"Logan, we only met Lucas, Audrey, and their father yesterday. We have the right to report any issues that arise. Mr. Mark must be made aware of Lucas's disrespectful behavior towards you. We cannot allow him to escape accountability," Kendall asserts.
"You are correct. It's just that I am concerned about jeopardizing Mr. Mark's relationship with your mother. They appear to be quite content together," Logan expresses.
"Leave that to me," Kendall responds. "In the meantime, why don't you find a way to unwind?"
"Alright, I will," Logan replies as he rises from his chair.
Later that evening in the apartment, the atmosphere is so tense that it feels palpable, as the group deliberately overlooks Lucas. Audrey, while sympathetic towards her brother, is still frustrated by the chaos he has created for himself.
"I did not anticipate this behavior from you, Lucas," Ms. Knight remarks. "You cannot treat anyone unkindly. Your father will arrive shortly."
Five minutes later, Mr. Mark enters the apartment.
"Lucas, I am perplexed. Did you misbehave earlier? Perhaps there was a misunderstanding between you and Logan," he inquires.
"Yes, sir," Lucas replies.
"Mr. Mark, I found his earlier remarks to be quite offensive. Will he not face any consequences?" Logan interjects.
"I see no reason for that. You both need to find a way to become friends," Mr. Mark responds.
"With all due respect, sir, we have no common ground. We are not suited to be friends, not even as acquaintances," Logan asserts.
"You will discover a way to connect," Mr. Mark states, subtly dismissing Logan's concerns. With his father's support, Lucas smirks at Logan.
"It appears we have much to address, Logan. You have more work to do than I do," Lucas taunts, attempting to provoke him.
Recognizing Lucas's intentions, Logan remains composed, albeit irritated, and is eager for him to leave. "Oh, I am certain we do, Lucas."
"You had better not be trying to provoke him," James warns, glaring at Lucas.
Feigning innocence, Lucas replies, "Oh me? Never," while smirking, revealing his insincerity, though it goes unnoticed by his father.
"Alright, boys, calm down. You are merely experiencing typical teenage disagreements. It's all in good fun, right?" Mr. Mark suggests.
"For one of us, it certainly is," James retorts, crossing his arms and rolling his eyes in exasperation.
"Mr. Mark just casually strolled out with Lucas and Audrey," Kendall grumbled.
"It's infuriating how he completely ignored Lucas' behavior towards you, Logan, and even seemed to condone it by telling you to befriend him," Kendall continued. "It's like he was blaming you for Lucas being a jerk. Unacceptable."
Logan nodded wearily. "I'm annoyed by it too, but I'm exhausted and have a pounding headache. I'm hitting the hay. You all should do the same."
"I'll have a word with Mr. Mark about his dismissal of Lucas' behavior," Ms. Knight chimed in. "But for now, Logan's right. We all need some shut-eye."
On Thursday afternoon, Logan is strolling through Palm Woods Park when he hears someone calling his name. He removes his headphones to listen more clearly and turns around, only to let out a groan and roll his eyes upon seeing Lucas.
"What do you want now? Are you here to further undermine my confidence with your harsh criticism? If that's the case, I'm leaving," Logan states.
"No, it's nothing like that. My father is correct; we do need to establish a connection," Lucas replies.
"No offense, but I genuinely have no desire to connect with you. Weren't you being hypocritical yesterday?" Logan retorts.
"In what way was I being hypocritical?" Lucas inquires, looking puzzled.
"Yesterday, you made excessive remarks about how reading makes me a nerd, yet you enjoy chess just like I do. Isn't chess considered a nerdy pastime, or is it only acceptable when you participate?" Logan explains.
"Well, um..." Lucas begins, nervously shoving his hands into his pockets. "It is quite relaxing, and I do have friends who think it's cool to play."
"That's great, and my friends support my passion for reading. You see, Lucas, you had no right to criticize me yesterday; it was hurtful. You come across as a nerdy individual as well, but you seem too proud and egotistical to acknowledge that aspect of yourself. If you genuinely wish for us to get along and potentially become friends, you need to think before you speak, as words can be painful," Logan asserts. "Don't think I didn't notice your behavior last night. Once your father sided with you and didn't reprimand you, your entire demeanor shifted. You were attempting to provoke me. You claimed I was the one who needed to work on our bonding. I am not the issue here; you are. Until you recognize that and take action, I will not be your friend." He then puts his headphones back in and walks away.
In the meantime, Audrey is on the lookout for Katie and Tyler, eventually spotting them in the game room. "What are you two doing in here?" she inquires.
"Playing Pac-Man. Would you like to join us?" Katie responds.
"No, don't you have any female friends your age?" Audrey questions.
"No, I only have Tyler. Why do you ask?" Katie replies.
"Don't you find it odd that you are always with a boy?" Audrey probes.
"No, I don't find it odd. I choose to spend time with him because I care about him. I'm not sure what you mean," Katie explains.
"You could be socializing with other girls your age," Audrey suggests.
"I've attempted to, but it hasn't worked out. The other girls in fifth grade don't seem to like me," Katie admits.
"Why is that?" Audrey inquires.
Katie sighs. "They think I'm strange and prefer to ignore me rather than befriend me," she explains.
"Well, they are correct. You do come across as unusual. You don't behave like a typical ten-year-old girl," Audrey states.
"You haven't known me long enough to make such judgments. What gives you the right to assume anything about me?" Katie responds, visibly annoyed. "Come on, Tyler." They exit the room in search of Kendall, finding him in the pool area conversing with Jo.
"What's wrong, guys? You seem upset," Kendall observes.
"We are upset, and we will explain what's bothering us," Katie replies, still affected by Audrey's comments. She recounts the entire incident to Kendall.
"Oh my goodness. I believe Audrey is just as problematic as Lucas," Kendall sighs. "If we inform Mr. Mark, he may not take us seriously, just like last night when we told him about Lucas' rudeness towards Logan."
"I want Audrey to face consequences!" Katie exclaims.
"I understand. I will speak to Mom," Kendall assures her.
"Thank you," Katie replies.
Later that evening in Apartment 2J…
"Audrey, I have been informed that you may have been somewhat critical of Katie today. However, it is possible that you were merely expressing your honest opinion, which she misinterpreted as an insult, much like Logan did with Lucas yesterday," Mr. Mark states.
"Exactly, Dad. I had no intention of causing harm," Audrey replies.
"Indeed, you did! You hurt my feelings," Katie interjects.
"You are only eight years old. Naturally, your feelings are still quite delicate," Lucas remarks.
"I am ten, and you are well aware of that! My feelings are not delicate! I have every right to be upset with your sister!" Katie retorts.
"You need to relax and stop being overly sensitive towards my children. Audrey did not intend to hurt you," Mr. Mark responds. "Why don't we resolve this matter over the weekend? It seems everyone is having difficulty getting along. You are all welcome to join me at my lake house for the entire weekend. Feel free to invite anyone you wish."
"We will consider it. Thank you, Mark," Ms. Knight replies, observing him depart with Lucas and Audrey.
"Mom, we should not go. He didn't even acknowledge that Audrey was unkind to me, nor did he address Lucas's behavior towards Logan yesterday. He keeps trivializing their actions as mere misunderstandings," Katie expresses. "That is simply not fair!" She crosses her arms in frustration.
"We should not go, Mom. He showed no concern when Audrey was unkind to me, nor did he acknowledge Lucas's behavior towards Logan yesterday. He keeps brushing off their actions as mere misunderstandings," Katie asserts, crossing her arms in frustration.
"I understand, dear, but we must still attempt to coexist with Mark and his children," Ms. Knight replies.
"Why? So you can fulfill the romantic fantasy you've been longing for since we left Minnesota?!" Katie retorts, her anger evident.
"Katie!" Kendall interjects, taken aback by his sister's harshness towards their mother.
"It's the truth! I refuse to sacrifice my happiness just so she can continue dating a man who fails to discipline his children!" Katie exclaims before retreating to her room.
"Oh dear, what have I done?" Ms. Knight laments, feeling remorseful for upsetting Katie.
"Would you like me to speak with her?" Logan offers.
"If you believe you can reason with her, then please do," Ms. Knight responds.
"Alright, Ms. Knight," Logan says as he heads to Katie's room. "May I come in to talk, Katie?"
"You agree with Mom, don't you? That we should go to Mr. Mark's lake house and keep giving him and his unruly children a chance to bond with us?" Katie replies, sitting cross-legged on her bed while engrossed in a game on her iPad.
"I have my reservations, but I can see that your mom is genuinely happy with Mr. Mark. I understand it may seem to you that she is selfishly asking us to build a relationship with him, Lucas, and Audrey, but I believe she truly wants this to succeed. She didn't intend to upset you, Katie," Logan explains as he takes a seat beside her.
"I know she didn't mean to, but it feels like she prioritizes Mr. Mark's feelings over mine. It seems so unfair. I want her to be happy too. If being with Mr. Mark genuinely brings her joy, then I will do my best to get along with him, Lucas, and Audrey. I can't do that by myself," Katie admits.
"You won't have to. I will ensure that Kendall, James, and Carlos continue to make an effort to get along with Mr. Mark, Lucas, and Audrey."
"Thank you, Logan," Katie expresses. "My mother is likely upset with me for confronting her."
"I believe your feelings were warranted," Logan responds.
"Yet, I raised my voice at my mother. That is quite unusual for me. What if I have jeopardized our entire relationship?" Katie worries.
"You haven't, Katie. Everything is alright," Logan reassures her. "Now, let's head back."
They make their way to the living room.
"I apologize for raising my voice, Mom. It truly hurt my feelings when you suggested that we all accept Mr. Mark's invitation to his lake house. I felt as though you were indifferent to the fact that he overlooks the behavior of his children, who are quite spoiled," Katie explains.
"I comprehend why you reacted the way you did. I am not angry about it. I will continue to address with Mr. Mark the way he tends to ignore Lucas and Audrey's conduct. However, I believe that visiting their lake house could enhance our relationship with them. If you children prefer not to go, then we will forgo the trip," Ms. Knight replies.
With a sigh, Kendall states, "We will go. It might turn out to be enjoyable. With Mr. Mark present, Lucas and Audrey are likely to be less bothersome. Plus, he mentioned that we could invite anyone we wish."
On Friday morning in the classroom, Jett experiences boredom as he awaits the arrival of Miss Collins. To alleviate his tedium, he decides to tease Carlos by snatching the hockey magazine he is reading. A playful tug-of-war ensues until a sudden, loud tearing sound interrupts the moment.
Carlos gasps in distress as he surveys the damage to his magazine. "You tore my magazine! You tore my magazine! It was brand new! I purchased it with my allowance! You are a monster! A mindless beast! Te voy a quemar vivo y te voy a lanzar a la cueva de los leones en el zoológico de Los Ángeles. ¡Destruiste mis sueños! ¡Vas a sufrir como yo estoy sufriendo!"
"What was that last part?" Jett inquires, unable to comprehend the Spanish language.
With a sigh, Logan responds, "He said he will burn you alive and throw you into the lion's den at the Los Angeles Zoo! You have shattered his dreams! You will endure suffering like he is experiencing!"
"That's quite grim," Jett remarks.
"Just like the void in your heart! It is cold, dark, and malevolent!" Carlos retorts. "You will compensate me for my new magazine! You owe me 50.00!"
"I am not paying that much! You must be out of your mind!" Jett exclaims.
"You are the one acting irrationally! You took my magazine and tore the cover! Who behaves in such a manner? What made you think it was acceptable to take something that is not yours? A magazine holds no value for you; you do not even enjoy reading!" Carlos asserts.
"I do read! I read every other Friday!" Jett retorts.
"Reading the paycheck from your job at New Town High does not constitute 'reading,' Jett. It merely reflects your eagerness to receive your earnings," Logan interjects.
"Be quiet, you nerd!" Jett responds.
"Do not refer to Logan as a nerd!" Carlos exclaims, rising to his feet.
"I can label him however I choose, as that is precisely what he is!" Jett replies. "What will you do now? Call your pathetic father?"
"You have crossed a line now. Where is Miss Collins? Someone fetch Miss Collins! James, restrain Carlos immediately!" Logan exclaims in a state of panic.
Miss Collins gracefully enters the room, her presence commanding attention as she sifts through her bag. "I apologize for my tardiness; this morning has been quite chaotic, and I—" She pauses, her gaze drawn to the commotion of shouting and the sound of heavy objects crashing to the floor. Her eyes widen as she spots James clinging to Carlos' back, desperately trying to prevent him from lunging at Jett. The other students remain seated, strategically avoiding the unfolding chaos.
"James, I instructed you to restrain him, not to be dragged along," Logan admonishes.
"I'm doing my utmost! You know how he transforms into a powerhouse when he's furious," James replies, grappling with the spirited young Latino.
"What on earth is happening here?!" Miss Collins exclaims, her voice echoing through the room.
All eyes turn to her, a mixture of surprise and apprehension evident on their faces.
"He started it!" both Carlos and Jett declare simultaneously, each pointing an accusatory finger at the other.
Miss Collins exhales deeply, massaging her temples. "It seems I can only deduce that Jett provoked Carlos, which explains James's futile attempts to contain him. I shall persist in my inquiries until I receive a clear and unequivocal response. What transpired?"
Now composed, Carlos retrieves his damaged magazine, presenting it to her. "This is what occurred, Miss Collins. He deliberately tore the cover off my brand-new, costly hockey magazine. He insulted both Logan and my papi."
"He threatened me with a gruesome fate, claiming he would roast me and offer me to the lions at the Los Angeles Zoo! And he articulated all of this in Spanish! He said he would burn me alive and cast me into the lion's den! You shattered my aspirations! You will endure the same torment I am experiencing! All in Spanish! We are not in Cuba! We communicate in English here!"
With an arched brow and arms crossed, Carlos retorts, "I am not Cuban!" clearly taken aback by the assumption.
"It's in South America, right? That's where your heritage lies!" Jett asserts.
"My heritage?" Carlos replies, perplexed.
"Jett, your grasp of geography is so misguided that it's almost laughable. Cuba is located in CENTRAL AMERICA. English is one of the predominant languages spoken there. Have you ever glanced at a map?" Logan interjects.
"Your blatant racism is shocking, Jett. You ought to recognize that numerous Spanish-speaking nations exist worldwide. Your ignorance in this matter is precisely why you are faltering in the geography segment of social studies," Miss Collins admonishes.
"Action must be taken to address the chaos that has unfolded. A consequence is necessary," Jett asserts with urgency.
"How delightful that you've chosen to volunteer for detention after school," Miss Collins replies, her arms crossed and a sly smile gracing her lips.
"What?" Jett exclaims, taken aback.
His astonishment elicits laughter from his peers.
"You heard me correctly. Additionally, you will be purchasing a new magazine for Carlos to replace the one you damaged, using your own funds," Miss Collins states with unwavering authority.
"That's utterly unjust! You can't force me to do that!" Jett protests vehemently. "I refuse! Absolutely not!" He stomps his feet in a display of defiance and frustration.
"My goodness, I've witnessed toddlers in a candy shop exhibit more emotional control than him," Katie whispers to Tyler, both of them sharing a chuckle.
In retaliation, Jett strikes Katie on the head with a textbook, prompting her to cry out in pain. James swiftly confronts Jett, pinning him against the wall with a fierce grip on his collar, his expression a mask of fury.
"James, stop! You're choking him!" Logan interjects.
"That's precisely the point," James replies, maintaining his unyielding hold as he observes Jett's expression of sheer terror.
"Calm down, James. He's not worth the trouble," Kendall advises.
James holds on for a few more seconds before releasing Jett, who collapses to the floor, gasping for breath and coughing violently.
"I couldn't breathe! You choked me!" he gasps.
James rolls his eyes. "Quit being so theatrical. You're perfectly fine. Katie is the one who deserves sympathy, you jerk!"
"Miss Collins informs, 'Your mother has arrived to take you to the hospital, Katie. Are you feeling alright?'
Katie nods in response and leaves the classroom.
At Los Angeles Children's Hospital, Katie is seated on the examination table while the doctor carefully stitches the wound on her forehead.
"All done," he announces. "You still appear quite downcast. You were an exemplary patient. You may select a prize from the treasure chest. Choose anything that appeals to you." He opens a small plastic treasure chest for her selection.
Katie surveys the variety of toys, which range from stickers to keychains to bouncy balls adorned with smiley faces. She makes her choice without verbalizing it.
"What did you choose, Katie?" Logan inquires.
Katie remains silent, revealing a keychain Rubik's cube that serves as both a toy and an accessory.
"Wow, that's really impressive, Katie. It's a keychain and a toy combined," he remarks. "Excellent choice."
Katie places it in his hand and gazes at him.
He looks at her in confusion. "Wait, you want me to have this? I'm not the patient, Katie. You are. You selected it; it belongs to you," he responds.
Katie encourages him to keep it with her pleading expression.
He sighs. "Alright, I'll accept it. Thank you, Katie. But why are you giving it to me? I'm not quite following," he says.
Katie gestures towards him, then the doctor, and finally a poster of the human brain affixed to the wall.
"Oh, I understand now," he replies.
"I do not. I'm completely lost," James admits, struggling to comprehend Katie's nonverbal communication with Logan. Kendall and Carlos share the same confusion.
"Guys, it's really quite straightforward. She essentially indicated that she wanted me to keep the keychain Rubik's cube because she knows I enjoy puzzles, and it takes intelligence to be a doctor," Logan clarifies.
"You inferred all that from her pointing at you, then the doctor, and finally the brain poster without any verbal cues?" Kendall asks, still bewildered.
"Indeed," Logan responds with pride."
"It is truly commendable that you chose to share your prize, Katie; however, I believe you should consider obtaining another one for yourself. I firmly believe you deserve it," the doctor remarks.
Katie glances back at the prize box and selects an orange tabby beanie baby. She embraces it, allowing a faint smile to emerge, yet soon reverts to her previous somber expression.
"There must be a way to lift her spirits," Kendall observes. "But what could it be?"
"Perhaps we should take her home. The hospital environment is likely causing her stress," Logan suggests.
The doctor proceeds to discharge Katie. Upon entering Apartment 2J, she quietly retreats to her room. Later that evening, Jo and Camille arrive for a visit.
"How are Katie and Carlos coping after the incident caused by Jett in the classroom this morning?" Camille inquires.
"Well, I advised Carlos to express his anger in a constructive manner to help him process his feelings," Logan replies.
"And what happened next?" Jo prompts.
"Allow me to show you the outcome." Logan steps aside, revealing Carlos intensely mashing buttons on a game controller while vocally confronting the television.
"I will defeat you, Bowser! Do you think you can just take what I enjoy and ruin it?! I am going to obliterate you!" he yells.
"What on earth is going on?" Camille asks, astonished.
Logan exhales deeply. "He is engaged in a Mario Brothers game, and he has projected his frustrations onto Bowser, whom he associates with Jett. While I did not anticipate this reaction when I encouraged him to channel his anger, if it serves as a means for him to release his frustration, then I consider it acceptable."
"What about James? Why is he sitting in that manner? He appears to be quite uncomfortable," Jo inquires.
"I have been needing to use the restroom for the last ten minutes, but I am hesitant to move due to Carlos's evident anger," James replies.
"Just stand up and walk in front of him to reach the bathroom. He is not going to harm you," Logan advises.
"Not intentionally, of course, but you have observed him just as I have. His arms are flailing everywhere. I think I will wait until he settles down," James responds.
"Alright, whatever you feel is best," Logan concedes before turning back to Jo and Camille. "You also inquired about Katie, correct? She is in her room, lying on her bed in an unsettling silence, staring at the ceiling with a vacant expression. It is quite concerning. Kendall attempted to cheer her up, but nothing he tried has been effective. Do either of you have any recommendations?"
Jo suggests, "Perhaps we can lift Katie's spirits by engaging her in a game. She enjoys games, doesn't she?"
"Indeed, she prefers video games," Logan replies.
Camille interjects, "What about board games or card games?"
"Her favorites are Monopoly and Go Fish," Logan responds.
"Excellent, we can play those games," Jo agrees.
Logan then states, "There is one issue."
"What is it?" both Jo and Camille inquire.
"She still needs to come out of her room," Logan explains.
Camille asks, "How can we achieve that?"
"I'm uncertain. Perhaps I could entice her with her favorite food," Logan suggests.
"That's a good idea," Camille acknowledges.
"Thank you," Logan replies, but is interrupted by Carlos's loud, frustrated exclamations.
"Bowser keeps defeating me! This is unacceptable!" he shouts.
"Um... amigo, now might be an opportune moment to take a break from the game. It appears to be aggravating you more than soothing you," Logan advises.
"Fine," Carlos concedes, throwing the game controller onto the coffee table. "I will defeat Bowser another time."
"Alright, my friend. You do that," Logan responds with a sigh of exasperation before turning back to Jo and Camille. "I need to help him calm down. Please excuse me." He approaches Carlos and says, "Hey Carlitos, I understand that you're still upset about how Jett treated you earlier."
"I'm no longer angry about what he did to me. I'm furious about what he did to Katie! Our princess was brutally attacked by that monster! I will not rest until he faces proper consequences!" Carlos exclaims.
James sighs, "It seems like it will be a long night."
Suddenly, Katie appears from her room, riding on Kendall's back.
"Katie, you know, you're really starting to outgrow this. My back is beginning to hurt under your weight," Kendall remarks.
"Are you implying that I am overweight?" Katie retorts.
"I said nothing of the sort," Kendall clarifies as he sets her down and straightens his back.
"Oh, it's great to see you speaking again and out of your room. I was planning to prepare your favorite food to encourage you to come out. How about I make sloppy joes and fries?" Logan offers.
Katie shrugs and lets out a sigh. "Alright, fine. It doesn't matter to me," she states with a serious tone.
"Jo and Camille would like to engage in some games with you to lift your spirits, Katie. Perhaps Monopoly or Go Fish?" Logan suggests while gathering the necessary ingredients for dinner.
"No, thank you," Katie replies.
Camille, noticing the orange tabby beanie baby that Katie received from the hospital, suddenly has an idea. "Katie, I have a suggestion. How about Jo and I assist you in naming your new kitty companion? I was quite skilled at naming my stuffed animals when I was younger."
"There's no need to boast about it," Katie responds in a flat tone.
"I wasn't boasting," Camille retorts.
"Actually, you were. I understand you had stuffed animals as a child. So what? How does that help me feel better?" Katie replies.
"I simply thought we could be imaginative together in naming your new stuffed kitty," Camille explains.
"Alright," Katie concedes, showing a hint of interest.
Camille exhales deeply and glances at Jo.
"It's alright; you're doing wonderfully. She's just feeling down because of what happened earlier," Jo offers with empathy.
Camille gazes at the orange tabby beanie baby and devises an appealing name for it. "What do you think about naming your kitty Fireball?"
"Fireball?" Katie inquires, expressing doubt about the name.
"Indeed, it resembles the color of fire," Camille explains.
"No. I dislike that name. My kitty is adorable and deserves a cute name. Fireball is not cute. Perhaps for a real cat, but not for a stuffed toy," Katie responds.
"Alright, I will keep searching," Camille concedes.
"No, let Jo have a chance to suggest a name," Katie proposes.
"Do you like the name Tangerine?" Jo asks.
"Are you suggesting I name a stuffed kitten after a fruit?" Katie retorts.
"It's creative and unique," Jo argues.
"It's odd and uninteresting," Katie counters.
"Katie, they are both simply trying to lift your spirits with their suggestions. They are doing their best," Kendall remarks.
"I understand that, but I still do not like the names they have proposed. Are you upset with me? Am I causing a problem?" Katie responds, her frustration evident.
"No, Katie. You are still annoyed with Jett from earlier," Kendall clarifies. "Why not try naming your stuffed kitty yourself?"
"I like the name Sunny," Katie states.
"That's very charming," Camille replies.
"Quite imaginative," Jo adds.
"The food is ready, and that's a great name, Katie," Logan announces.
The group gathers at the table to enjoy their meal. Two hours later, after Jo and Camille have returned home, Katie and the boys are quietly engaging in leisure activities to prepare for bed. Suddenly, a loud knock on the door startles and irritates everyone due to the late hour.
"Who could that possibly be? It's nearly 10:30," Ms. Knight remarks as she approaches the door, her expression turning sour. "Hello, Jett. What brings you here at this late hour?"
"I need to speak with Carlos and Jett. Send them out immediately," Jett demands rudely.
Gasps are heard. "How dare you arrive at our apartment at this hour, display such a lack of manners towards me, and expect to get your way? That behavior is entirely unacceptable," Ms. Knight responds.
In a dramatic display, Jett scoffs and rolls his eyes. "I refuse to take orders from a struggling single mother like yourself. You hold no sway over me. Your threats mean nothing," he declares.
But Carlos, armed with his toy lightsaber, springs into action. As he presents the makeshift weapon to Jett, he proclaims, "Fear not, Mama Knight. This one is corrupted by the dark forces."
Unfazed, Jett glances at the toy lightsaber with disdain. "Do you realize that's not a real lightsaber? How disconnected from reality can you be? Your immaturity knows no bounds," he scorns.
An exasperated Carlos lets out a frustrated groan in response.
Gathering everyone's attention, Logan steps in. "Let's cut to the chase, Jett. What brings you to our doorstep?" he asks.
"I demand a sincere apology from Carlos and Lacey," Jett insists.
Interrupting, Kendall corrects him. "Her name is Katie, and you know that quite well."
With tensions rising, James finally speaks up. "Enough, Jett. Why don't you leave us in peace so we can retire for the night? Your insults only reveal the darkness within you," he rebukes.
"Who are you to pass judgment on my mother's love life? Being a single parent doesn't define her, and it certainly doesn't make her inferior. You have no right to disrespect her just because she's on her own. And what gives you the audacity to demand apologies from Carlos and Katie? What did they do to owe you anything?" Kendall argues.
"Because I got detention because of them," Jett grumbles.
"But you're the one who tore up Carlos' hockey magazine, hurled a textbook at Katie, and spouted off racist remarks at Carlos. It's you who owes them an apology," James asserts.
"Sorry, not happening. Not ever," Jett states firmly.
"Then you need to go," Logan intervenes. "Your presence is not welcome here. Leave. Now."
Jett, with a dramatic roll of his eyes, remains steadfast, arms crossed defiantly. "I refuse to budge until that insufferable Honduran ruffian and that intolerable little brat offer me an apology!"
"First, you label me as Cuban, and now I'm suddenly from Honduras. What gives? I am unequivocally Mexican! Both my Mami and Papi are! I've yet to set foot in Mexico, but one day I shall embrace the land of my roots. Until then, I shall relish my life here in California and stand firm against ignorant, racist fools like you! You call me immature, yet I possess qualities you sorely lack! I am intelligent, witty, considerate, and compassionate! You need to vacate our threshold, or I swear I will vanquish you with my lightsaber!" Carlos passionately declares.
"You don't intimidate me," Jett snaps back.
Suddenly, footsteps draw near from behind him. "Well, perhaps you'll find me more intimidating," comes a voice.
It is Officer Garcia.
"Hello, Papi. What brings you here?" Carlos inquires.
"I was summoned due to a reported disturbance. It appears I have located the epicenter," Officer Garcia replies, casting a disapproving glance at Jett.
Jett exclaimed, "You betrayed me by telling your dad?!"
Carlos defended himself, "No! I was just asking him why he showed up here! Obviously, I had no idea he was coming! You need to listen more carefully! Your hearing is selective."
Officer Garcia, brimming with concern, asked Katie, his sweet little Muñeca, why she had stitches on her forehead and who attacked her.
Katie simply pointed at Jett and revealed, "He threw a textbook at my forehead this morning in school."
"Why would you do such a horrible thing to her?!" Officer Garcia demanded furiously from Jett.
Jett confessed, "I had to show that insolent child what happens when you disrespect me."
Officer Garcia, shocked, replied, "So your solution was throwing a textbook at her? How is that supposed to earn respect? What kind of ignoramus are you?"
Katie then chimed in, revealing the full story of what led to Jett's outburst.
Officer Garcia's eyes widened in realization, "My goodness! Jett, you are truly out of line!"
But Jett defended himself, "No, I'm not."
Kendall, growing weary, interjected, "Can we wrap this up? I'm exhausted and we have a big weekend ahead."
Officer Garcia's voice rang out, a stern command cutting through the tense atmosphere. "Yes, Kendall. Jett, you are hereby ordered to extend immediate apologies to Carlos and Katie. And tomorrow, you will head to the store to replace the hockey magazine you destroyed."
Jett's eyes narrowed, his voice filled with defiance. "I refuse to do any such thing."
The officer's warning was clear, a threat lingering in the air. "Do you really want to end up spending the night in a cold cell? Ms. Knight can press charges against you for attacking Katie, remember that."
With a mixture of sighs and groans, Jett finally relented. "Fine," he muttered, his apology sounding half-hearted. "Katie and Carlos, I... I'm sorry for how I acted."
Carlos's response was blunt, unimpressed by Jett's lackluster apology. "That wasn't much of an apology, but I guess it will have to do. It's late now. Just go home."
Jett has finally departed.
"I must be on my way as well. I find myself intrigued. What grand plans for the weekend was Kendall alluding to?" Officer Garcia inquires.
"Ah, you're aware that Mama Knight has recently found a new beau? His children have caused us quite a bit of trouble, and he seems rather lax in his discipline. I believe he wishes to mend fences by fostering harmony among us, hence the invitation to his splendid lake house for the weekend, where we can bring anyone we desire. Would you consider joining us? Lucas and Audrey tend to misbehave only in their father's absence. I assure you, they would never dare to act out in front of a police officer. Your presence is far too formidable for that." Carlos explains.
"Such an enticing proposition, but regrettably, I must decline. The incidence of crime tends to escalate during weekends. The statistics have been rising year after year, I'm afraid. My apologies, mijo." Officer Garcia responds.
"That's perfectly alright, Papi. You've always instilled in me that crime never takes a holiday." Carlos replies.
Officer Garcia affirms, "I certainly did, mijo. Good night," before departing.
