On Saturday morning, everyone rises and prepares to depart for Mr. Mark's lake house.
Downstairs in the lobby, Andy and Steven await their companions.
"Hello, everyone. We appreciate the invitation," Andy remarks. "Steven is thrilled about visiting the lake house, but he also has some concerns, as do I."
"What concerns you?" Logan inquires.
"You mentioned that the children of Ms. Knight's boyfriend can be somewhat unkind. I am worried about how they might treat Steven. Do they harbor any biases against the special needs community?" Andy responds.
"I cannot say for certain, Andy, but I hope that is not the case," Logan replies.
"If they do, I will be quite upset with them," Andy states.
"Let us concentrate on enjoying ourselves once we arrive at the lake house, Andy," Logan suggests.
"Are they fond of dogs?" Andy questions.
"I'm uncertain. Ms. Knight will need to consult Mr. Mark regarding that," Logan answers.
"What if they are not? That would mean they might not like Tyson, and Steven would be very disappointed," Andy expresses.
"Andy, please take a deep breath and relax. I am confident that bringing Tyson will not pose an issue. If it does, we will address it then," Logan reassures him.
"Very well, Logan. I have faith in you. I believe that everything will turn out fine once we reach the lake house," Andy states.
Tyler, Jo, and Camille are also accompanying them.
"Alright, children, it's time to get into the vehicle," Ms. Knight announces.
"Will your car accommodate all of us, Mom? And a German Shepherd as well?" Kendall inquires.
"Unfortunately, no. That is why Mr. Mark has arranged for a large van for our use. I informed him of our group size and that my car would not be sufficient, so he kindly arranged for a spacious van to be delivered for me to drive to his lake house," Ms. Knight clarifies.
"Okay, Mom. That was very generous of him, but that does not mean I have to be fond of him," Kendall replies.
"I understand, dear. In time, you will come to appreciate him. Just give it time," Ms. Knight reassures.
Once everyone has entered the van and fastened their seatbelts, Ms. Knight departs from the Palm Woods parking lot. The journey to their destination takes approximately one hour and fifty-one minutes.
"Is this the place? This grand, luxurious lodge?" Katie exclaims as she gazes out the window.
"Indeed, this is the location. I will inform Mr. Mark of our arrival," Ms. Knight responds while sending a text message.
Five minutes later, Mr. Mark emerges from the house accompanied by Lucas and Audrey.
"Greetings, everyone! I am delighted that you chose to join us. This weekend promises to be filled with enjoyment and adventure," he proclaims. "Children, please check if they require assistance with their luggage."
"We are not bellhops, Dad. We have moved beyond that," Lucas retorts.
"Yes, you should assist them as well," Audrey adds.
"Just go. It is far too early in the morning for your quirky teenage attitudes," Mr. Mark instructs.
Lucas and Audrey groan but comply.
"Hello, Lucas and Audrey. Meet our two friends, Andy and Steven. Please give them a warm welcome," Logan announces.
"Why does one of them have a dog on a leash? Oh wow, it's a German Shepherd," Lucas exclaims.
"That's Tyson, my brother Steven's dog. I hope you don't mind that we brought him along. Steven and Tyson are a package deal. Are you more of a dog person or a cat person? I have a cat named Angel, she's a Turkish Angora," Andy shares.
"We do love animals, we were just surprised to see a dog with you," Lucas admits.
"Well, I did mention about an hour ago that a dog would be joining us. Perhaps you were lost in your own world," Mr. Mark teases.
Once the luggage was brought in, Mr. Mark ushered everyone into the cozy living room. "I envision this weekend being a magical blend of excitement and joy," he proclaimed. "I have meticulously planned a thrilling itinerary for us all. But first things first, my young adventurers, please choose your resting chambers for the duration of our stay. Lucas and Audrey have already claimed theirs and will gladly guide you to the other chambers."
"Dad, we're not a hotel. They can find their own rooms," Lucas objected.
"While this may not be a hotel, we shall still extend warm hospitality to our guests. It is our duty to ensure their comfort and satisfaction. Now, off you go to assist in the room assignments. No more protests," Mr. Mark insisted.
Groaning and rolling his eyes, Lucas muttered, "Fine, whatever."
"I hate to intervene, but rolling your eyes and dismissing your father in such a manner is impolite and disrespectful, Lucas. Show him the respect he deserves," Ms. Knight chimed in.
"I am. I am following his instructions. I was merely sharing my perspective," Lucas states.
"Come on, Lucas. Please stop being so obstinate. We need to ensure that the weekend is enjoyable," Audrey replies.
They all proceed upstairs.
"Wow, look at the number of bunk beds in this room, Logan," Carlos exclaims. "We should select this one. Tyler, you can join us if you wish."
"Alright," Tyler responds.
"Is this acceptable for everyone? Do you all like this bedroom?" Carlos inquires.
"Yes, I am fine with it," Kendall replies.
"Me as well," Logan adds.
"Same for me," James states.
"Excellent!" Carlos exclaims with a smile.
"Katie, would you like to share a room with me and Camille?" Jo asks.
"No. Why would I?" Katie responds.
"Because it will be enjoyable. We will feel like sisters," Jo explains.
"I prefer a room to myself, similar to the one at the Palm Woods in Apartment 2J," Katie asserts.
"You can use the one down the hall. Jo and Camille, you can take the one adjacent to it," Audrey suggests.
"Thank you," Jo replies.
Lucas remarked, "Andy and Steven, you may utilize the one located in the corner over there. Tyson can rest outside."
"Outside, as in the backyard?" Andy inquired.
"Yes, is that an issue?" Lucas responded.
"Indeed, it is. Tyson does not sleep outside. He lacks a dog house. He is primarily an indoor dog. While he enjoys playing outside, it would be unfair to leave him out in the California heat," Andy explained.
"I only proposed it because he is a large dog. I am not familiar with how much of an indoor or outdoor dog he is, nor do I know your routine with him," Lucas admitted.
"You are correct; you do not know. Allow me to clarify. Tyson is a delightful dog who prefers air conditioning to the outdoors. He spends most of his time indoors, only going outside to relieve himself or when Steven and I choose to play with him. He sleeps in Steven's room, where he has a dog bed, but he often ends up on Steven's bed," Andy detailed. "Do you have any objections to Tyson being here?"
"Not at all," Lucas replied.
"Excellent," Andy stated. "Come on, Stevie, we need to take our luggage to the bedroom."
"Alright, Andy," Steven responded, following him.
Lucas waits until Andy and Steven are out of earshot before addressing Logan. "Are you truly friends with them?" he inquires.
"What do you mean by that?" Logan responds, looking perplexed.
"They seem so different from you and your friends," Lucas explains.
"Um, we can hear you," Andy interjects as he returns to the group. "Why are you questioning whether Steven and I are really Logan's friends? What do you mean by saying we're so different from him and the other boys? What are you implying?"
"Well, Steven isn't very social, and he tends to speak in one or two-word responses. What's the deal with that?" Lucas replies.
"He's autistic," Andy clarifies.
"Oh, I understand now. He's a Make-A-Wish child," Audrey remarks.
"Uh, what?" Andy responds, clearly confused.
"It all makes sense now. You are exceptionally kind to him because he has brain damage due to being ill with autism," Audrey states.
"Brain damage?! Ill?! Are you serious right now?!" Andy exclaims, his anger escalating.
"Oh no, you've ventured into dangerous territory now. You've really triggered him. Prepare for the rant," Logan warns.
"Allow me to enlighten you, as I sincerely hope your limited perspectives can grasp this! Steven is not unwell! His mind is not impaired! He is not a child seeking a wish. The members of Big Time Rush are our true friends! Their kindness towards Steven is not a result of his different pace of mental development; it stems from genuine care! Let me clarify a common misconception about autism: it is not an illness! It is a neurological condition that many individuals are born with, and it is certainly not contagious! Autism does not equate to a damaged brain; rather, it signifies a different wiring of the mind! Steven is an exceptional young boy who faces the challenges of school while contending with the ignorance of those who, like you, choose to stereotype him. He is often labeled as the "slow kid" or the "strange boy with the dog." In truth, he is intelligent, compassionate, humorous, and imaginative. Individuals with autism desire to be treated as equals, not merely defined by their condition. They encompass so much more than their diagnosis! So, if you believe you can dismiss or judge him for being different, reconsider! I will not, under any circumstances, allow individuals like you to mistreat him! Is that clear?" Andy declares, his breath heavy from the fervor of his speech.
A profound silence envelops the room.
Before long, footsteps echo as they ascend the staircase.
"What is happening up here? What was all that commotion about?" Mr. Mark inquires.
"Your children were unkindly assessing both me and my brother, and I felt compelled to address the situation," Andy states.
"Come downstairs immediately. I need to understand the circumstances that led to all that shouting," Mr. Mark commands with a firm yet gentle tone.
They proceed to the living room. Andy recounts the entire incident in detail, omitting no aspect.
"So, what you are indicating is that Lucas and Audrey expressed their genuine thoughts about you and your brother, and your response was to react with excessive emotion and sensitivity," Mr. Mark observes.
The children look at each other in bewilderment. "What? No, I didn't—" Andy begins to protest.
"Enough. Your brother is a significant challenge for your family and is likely to create disturbances throughout the weekend with his outbursts," Mr. Mark asserts.
"That is not true. He is an amazing child," Andy retorts.
"Listen carefully. Autism is a significant burden. Those affected are often emotionally volatile, reacting aggressively to even minor provocations," Mr. Mark states.
"You are mistaken. I understand my brother better than anyone else here, and he is not emotionally unstable. He is sensitive but not irrational. He can manage his emotions with appropriate support, but you cannot continue to perceive him in such a negative light," Andy responds, unbothered by his anger towards an adult.
"Mark, can we have a word in the kitchen? Please follow me," Ms. Knight beckons, leading him into the room.
"Oh great, now your mom is going to give my dad a piece of her mind," Lucas mutters, frustration evident in his voice.
"Your dad just discriminated against Andy's brother, what do you expect? Your dad's attitude is clearly rubbing off on you and Audrey," Katie retorts. "It's no wonder you have such a skewed perception of autism and the disabled community."
Tension fills the room as everyone starts arguing.
Suddenly, Tyson barks loudly, causing everyone to pause.
"Sorry, boy, are we giving you a headache?" Andy apologizes, gently petting the dog's head.
Mr. Mark reenters the room, his demeanor earnest. "Steven, I sincerely apologize for my earlier misconceptions. My limited understanding of autism has clouded my judgment, leading me to form incorrect assumptions about you and your condition. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me." Lucas and Audrey, sensing the gravity of the moment, offer their apologies alongside Andy.
"Sorry," Lucas and Audrey mutter, their sincerity lacking.
"Thank you, Mr. Mark. Your apology carries more weight than that of your children," Andy remarks, a hint of sarcasm in his tone.
Lucas and Audrey exchange exasperated glances.
"Let's shift the atmosphere with one of the activities I've organized. How about horseback riding?" Mr. Mark suggests, his enthusiasm palpable.
The room buzzes with excitement, save for Katie, who retreats nervously to her assigned bedroom.
"What just happened? It's as if the mention of horseback riding sent her into a panic," Audrey observes.
"Katie has some reservations about horses," Logan explains.
"What little girl doesn't adore horses? Is she an anomaly?" Lucas inquires, puzzled.
"She adores them, but she harbors a fear," Logan clarifies.
"How can one love an animal yet be afraid of it? That doesn't make sense to me," Lucas responds, bewildered.
"It's complex. It traces back to a traumatic experience she endured at the age of five," Logan reveals.
"What traumatic incident occurred when Katie was five that instilled a fear of horses in her?" Audrey inquires.
"I am uncertain whether I should disclose that information. You might judge and mock her. We have just emerged from the turmoil you and Lucas created for Andy and Steven. Katie should not have to worry about potential ridicule regarding her equinophobia," Logan responds, proceeding upstairs to check on her.
"Katie? Where are you?" he calls out while scanning the room. Hearing soft sniffling from the bed, he looks underneath it. "There you are. Please come out so we can discuss this."
"Absolutely not! I refuse to go anywhere! I know Lucas and Audrey will make fun of me! I just know it!" Katie exclaims.
"Katie, please try to remain calm. I believe their father will ensure they do not bully you about your fear of horses," Logan reassures her.
"He won't make that effort. You witnessed the same as I did when he casually overlooked Lucas and Audrey's discrimination against Andy and Steven, and he participated in it himself. There is no way he will instruct them not to be unkind to me regarding my fear of horses!" Katie argues.
"Perhaps we can forgo the horse trail ride altogether. We could choose a different activity that would be enjoyable," Logan suggests.
"I don't want the plans to change because of me. That wouldn't be fair to everyone else in the house," Katie replies.
"It is not a selfish decision, Katie. I believe Mr. Mark would be amenable to adjusting the activity plan so that you are not excluded," Logan assures her.
With a gentle tug, Katie emerges from her hiding spot beneath the bed and wraps her arms around Logan. Suddenly, the room is filled with the joyful chaos of Tyson bounding in, showering them both with slobbery kisses.
"Tyson, Tyson! Easy there, buddy! We're fine!" Logan chuckles, gently pushing the eager German Shepherd away.
Tyson lets out a bark and nudges them toward the stairs, clearly eager for their company.
"It seems our furry friend is calling us back downstairs," Katie observes.
Tyson barks in agreement, his tail wagging enthusiastically.
"Alright, Tyson, lead the way," Logan declares, rising to his feet and following the excited pup with Katie by his side.
"Katie, I assure you, neither Lucas nor I will mock you for your fear of horses. Everyone harbors their own fears," Audrey reassures her.
"My brothers, however, are the epitome of courage. They fear nothing," Katie retorts.
"Naturally, we all have our fears, Katie. Some of them, however, can be quite irrational," Logan interjects.
"I have a fear that one day malevolent aliens will invade our planet and extract our brains," Carlos declares.
Audrey and Lucas share bewildered looks at his unexpected revelation.
With a sigh and a facepalm, Logan remarks, "As I mentioned, some fears can indeed be quite irrational."
"It's not irrational if it's a possibility. We must prepare to defend ourselves against the aliens before they reach our brains. It's straightforward. We need to contact NASA and urge them to construct a forcefield around the Earth to repel any alien assaults. Upon contact, the forcefield will disintegrate them, ensuring the safety of the entire population," Carlos insists.
The group stares at him in stunned silence.
"I find myself at a loss for words," Mr. Mark admits.
"Fear not. Carlos possesses a remarkably vivid imagination that transports him to thrilling adventures he wishes to incorporate into his daily life," Ms. Knight clarifies.
"It appears he genuinely believes in the existence of aliens," Mr. Mark observes.
"Indeed, he has held this belief since he was six. A visit to a space museum with his father ignited his fascination with astronomy and UFOs, leading him to be convinced of their reality," Ms. Knight explains.
"Ah, six is indeed a formative age," Mr. Mark acknowledges.
"I will do it. I will visit the horse trail and ride one. I must confront my fear. I genuinely wish to overcome my apprehension towards horses," Katie declares.
"Are you certain, Katie?" Tyler inquires.
"Yes. I no longer wish to be seen as a coward," Katie responds.
"Being afraid of horses does not equate to cowardice," Logan remarks. "The desire to face your fear is a testament to your bravery, and I commend you for it." He embraces her.
They all enter Mr. Mark's vehicle to head towards Baldwin Lake Stables.
Upon their arrival, they exit the car and notice an employee approaching them.
"Hello everyone. Welcome to Baldwin Lake Stables. Are you here today to ride some horses on the trail?" he greets.
"Indeed, we are, but I have a young girl with me who is somewhat anxious around horses. Is there anything we can do to help her feel more at ease and confident?" Mr. Mark inquires.
"Of course. It is quite common for individuals, especially children, to feel nervous around horses. Many kids who visit here have only seen horses in picture books. Encountering one in person can be both thrilling and daunting. However, I know just how to assist. What is the girl's name?" the employee responds.
"Her name is Katie. She is my ten-year-old daughter," Ms. Knight replies.
The employee kneels to Katie's height and smiles warmly. "Hello, Katie. It is perfectly normal to have a fear of horses. I am here to ensure you have a wonderful experience today. I will pair you with the gentlest, most child-friendly horse on the ranch. I assure you, you will form an instant bond. Please, follow me to meet him." The employee stands up.
"Okay," Katie replies softly, following him along with the rest of the group into a spacious barn lined with stables on either side.
"Katie, come meet a truly special horse," the employee beckons, leading her towards a majestic American Paint Horse named Calypso. "He has a soft spot for kids."
"Reminds me of the teacher dog from Bluey," Steven chimes in with excitement.
"You watch Bluey too?" Lucas asks Andy in surprise.
"Yeah, we're both fans. You're not going to make fun of us for it, are you?" Andy cautiously questions.
"Nah, it's actually a great show, even if it's meant for little ones," Lucas admits.
"Katie, want to come say hello to Calypso?" the employee offers.
Katie hesitates and declines.
Steven kindly hands her Tyson's leash and gives her a reassuring smile.
"He thought Tyson could help keep you calm," Andy clarifies the gesture.
"Thank you, Steven," Katie replies with appreciation.
As Calypso approached Katie with a gentle nuzzle, she felt a wave of nervousness wash over her.
"May I give him a pet?" she inquired.
"Of course, he's waiting for you to do just that," the employee replied.
As Katie timidly caressed Calypso's nose, he let out a contented neigh.
"Well done, good horsie," she whispered.
The employee interrupted, "Would you like to ride him for the trail adventure?"
"Ride him? Like, actually get on his back?" Katie questioned in disbelief.
The employee chuckled, "Yes, that's the idea."
With a quiver of nerves in her voice, Katie asked, "He won't throw me off or bite me, will he?"
"I can guarantee he won't," the employee reassured.
After a hesitant pause, Katie finally agreed.
"Stay with him while I gather the rest of your group and their horses," the employee instructed as they walked towards the other stable.
As the riders receive their steeds, they eagerly saddle up and mount, readying themselves for the exhilarating trail ride ahead.
"What's the name of this magnificent horse?" Lucas inquires, admiring its strength and speed.
"That one is called Pumpkin," the staff member replies.
"Seriously? Named after a food? Why must I be stuck with such a ridiculous name? I demand a different horse!" Lucas protests.
"Your sister mentioned your fondness for food, so I thought a name that resonates with your tastes would be fitting," the staff member explains.
With a groan of annoyance, Lucas exclaims, "Audrey!"
Audrey, unfazed by his frustration, simply chuckles.
"What about the horse I'm riding?" Carlos asks.
"Firecracker," the staff member responds.
"Now that's a name with flair," Carlos remarks.
"Thank you for recognizing the uniqueness of his name, unlike Lucas, who seems to have a penchant for complaints," the staff member adds with a smile.
"I'm sure my horse has a fantastic name as well, right?" James queries.
"Indeed, you have Pistol Pete," the staff member confirms.
"Why is he called Pistol Pete?" James asks, puzzled.
"His name comes from an old Western film where he was trained to respond to the sound of an air gun," the staff member explains.
"Wait, so he's like a horse controlled by a gun?" James asks, still bewildered.
"Not quite. It's similar to clicker training a dog. You give a command, and when the dog obeys, you reward it with a treat and a click sound, reinforcing the behavior. Pistol Pete learned to associate the sound of the air gun with standing on his marks during filming, and when he complied, he was rewarded with treats like apples or carrots," the staff member clarifies.
James understandingly nods, "Oh, I see now."
"As for the horses, Kendall, you've got Domino. And Logan, your horse is Camelot," the staff member announces.
"Those names are so unoriginal," Lucas scoffs.
Kendall defends the choices, "Domino suits my horse perfectly with his black and white coloring."
Logan explains his reasoning, "I chose Camelot because of the historical significance in medieval times. It's the legendary city of King Arthur and his round table of knights."
Lucas mocks, "Boring! I didn't ask for a history lesson, Lamelon!"
Logan feels hurt by the disrespectful remark and sighs in frustration.
But Carlos steps in, "Logan, I found your explanation fascinating. Don't let Lucas bring you down."
"Gracias, amigo. Your kind words always lift my spirits," Logan acknowledges with a smile.
"Do not refer to him as Lamelon. It is unkind to use derogatory names," Andy admonishes.
"He's not taking it to heart. He'll survive," Lucas reassures.
"Just because I'm not getting emotional doesn't mean your words didn't sting," Logan retorts.
"Mark, intervene. Lucas was inconsiderate to Logan," Ms. Knight urges.
"It's just teenage drama. No big deal," Mr. Mark brushes it off, nonchalant.
Ms. Knight lets out a frustrated sigh.
"Andy, your horse goes by Snickers, Steven is assigned Skittles, and Tyler is matched with Bowser. Jo, you have Lady Bird, and Camille, you're with Venus," the employee announces.
Tyson, Mr. Mark, and Ms. Knight lingered behind as the children rustled with excitement, preparing for their upcoming trail ride.
"Listen up, young ones," the employee called out, herding the kids together. "Stay on my tail, heed my every instruction, and don't even think about straying off course. Consequences will follow if you do. Obey the rules, folks. This adventure will last three hours, with breaks along the way." With that, he set off down a path that disappeared into a dense forest.
After an hour of riding, the group halted near a sparkling stream where the horses eagerly bent down to drink.
"Enjoying the ride, Katie?" Logan inquired.
"Oh, immensely," Katie replied, a smile lighting up her face. "Calypso is a real sweetheart."
"Fantastic," Logan responded with a nod.
"Andy, what is the story behind your brother naming his dog Tyson? It almost sounds as if you have another sibling rather than a pet when the name is mentioned," Lucas remarks.
"Well, the whole thing began when Steven adopted Tyson as a young puppy. We brainstormed various interesting names but struggled to find the perfect one. After about thirty minutes of silence, a commercial for Tyson chicken nuggets aired on television. Steven, who is a fan of that brand, became quite enthusiastic. He then looked at Tyson and smiled, saying, 'Come, Tyson, come.' Surprisingly, Tyson, who had never been called by that name before, responded and approached him. That is how he received his name," Andy explains.
Lucas scoffs and rolls his eyes. "I must say, I expected a more thrilling explanation for the name, but it turns out the dog is named after a chicken nugget advertisement. Your brother lacks creativity," he comments.
Andy frowns and crosses his arms in disapproval. "I must express that your recent comments have been quite hurtful. First, you spoke ill of Logan, and now you have insulted my brother again. It is necessary for you to apologize to Steven," he asserts.
"I refuse to apologize," Lucas declares.
"Why do you have to be such a jerk?" Andy questions.
"Why do you have to be such a dork?" Lucas fires back, giving him a shove. Andy retaliates with another shove.
"Uh oh Logan, we've got a situation brewing," Camille alerts them as she turns to see the shoving match between Lucas and Andy.
Panicking, Logan rushes over, pleading, "Guys, please stop! No more fighting!" He quickly beckons Kendall, James, and Carlos for assistance in separating the two.
With Kendall and James holding onto Lucas and Carlos and Logan grabbing Andy, the group successfully manages to pull them apart. The ranch employee returns to witness the commotion, clearly unimpressed.
"I was only gone for a moment to clear the trail for the horses, and I come back to this chaos! What on earth is happening here?"
Lucas immediately fabricates, "Andy pushed me without any provocation!"
"That's a blatant lie!" Andy retorts, his voice rising.
"Absolutely false!" Steven chimes in, standing firmly with his brother.
The horse ranch employee exhales deeply. "We will address this matter upon our return to the ranch. Remount your horses and follow my lead. We have two more hours ahead, and I expect utter silence, particularly from the two of you!" he declares, casting a stern look at Lucas and Andy.
As they finally approach the ranch, Mr. Mark notices their arrival and perceives the underlying tension.
"Did something occur?" he inquires.
"Was there an incident?" Ms. Knight asks, her concern evident.
"Yes. Lucas and Andy engaged in a physical confrontation. Lucas claims Andy pushed him without cause, while Andy vehemently denies it, with Steven supporting his account," Kendall explains.
"Dad, I'm innocent. Andy is the real troublemaker," Lucas insists.
"I'm the troublemaker?! Seriously, you're going to make that claim?! I can spot a liar from a mile away, and you are a chronic liar. I live with one. My older sister Hannah lies incessantly. It drives me up the wall. You know you're in the wrong. You asked me about the origin of Tyson's name, and when I shared the story, you cruelly remarked that Steven lacked creativity in naming his dog. I found that remark unkind and simply requested an apology. You refused and acted like a petulant child, shoving me when I called you a jerk. I rightfully pushed you back after you called me a dork. So yes, I was provoked. You claimed I attacked you without cause, but I had every right to defend myself!" Andy asserts passionately.
"Is that all true, Lucas?" Mr. Mark questions.
"Not at all, he's lying," Lucas replies defiantly.
Kendall and the others express their disapproval of his blatant dishonesty.
"Audrey, you witnessed everything. Please tell your dad I'm speaking the truth," Andy pleads.
"My brother is correct. You attacked him for no reason at all," Audrey confirms.
"Mark, it may be prudent to address this matter upon our return to the lake house," Ms. Knight suggests.
"An excellent notion," Mr. Mark replies.
"I'm feeling quite famished. Might we indulge in lunch?" Carlos inquires.
"Absolutely, we shall enjoy a meal en route to the lake house," Mr. Mark affirms.
Upon their arrival at the lake house, the group gathers in the kitchen to savor their McDonald's fare.
"Andy, do you believe you may have intentionally pushed Lucas simply out of disdain for him?" Mr. Mark probes.
"Not at all, sir. While I admit I harbor no fondness for him, I would never resort to shoving him without cause. I stand by my account, as it is the truth. He insulted Steven and failed to offer an apology. Had he simply apologized, we could have avoided this entire debacle," Andy responds earnestly.
"Do you have any other witnesses to corroborate your account aside from your brother?" Mr. Mark inquires.
"Everyone present, including Audrey. She has misled you to protect Lucas. I assure you, sir, I am speaking the truth," Andy insists.
"Lucas and Audrey would never deceive me. I have raised them with integrity," Mr. Mark asserts.
"I do not question your parenting, sir. As I mentioned at the horse ranch, Steven and I have a rather unpleasant older sister, Hannah, who lies with such frequency it could be considered a competitive endeavor. I can recognize a liar when I encounter one, and Lucas and Audrey exhibit the same tendencies as Hannah," Andy explains.
"Andy is a remarkably honest and well-mannered child, Mark. The incident at the horse ranch was instigated solely by Lucas and Audrey, and they must be held accountable for their actions," Ms. Knight interjects.
"I will not be reprimanding either of my children," Mr. Mark asserts. "Andy, you must refrain from pushing Lucas again."
"But he pushed me first!" Andy retorts.
"That is irrelevant. He is the one suffering from your significant anger issues," Mr. Mark responds.
With a resigned sigh, Andy discards his trash and heads upstairs.
"Mark, I am extremely disappointed in you at this moment. Andy is not the problematic child here," Ms. Knight states.
"Silence, Jennifer. I am fully aware of what I am doing," Mr. Mark replies with authority.
"Hey, you cannot address my mother in that manner!" Kendall exclaims angrily.
"Exactly, you cannot speak to her like that!" Katie adds.
"It was a mistake to agree to come here for the weekend," Ms. Knight declares. "We are leaving tonight to return to the Palm Woods. I am appalled by your tone, Mark. I need to go pack. Children, gather your belongings."
"Wait, Jennifer, there is no need for that. Let us discuss this," Mr. Mark implores.
"What is there to discuss? You refuse to listen to me anyway," Ms. Knight replies with a sigh. "I require some space and time to reflect." She then ascends the stairs.
"We should check on Andy and inform him to prepare for our return to the Palm Woods. I genuinely believed we would enjoy our weekend here," Kendall expresses sadly.
They all proceed upstairs, including Lucas and Audrey.
Steven enters the bedroom chosen by him and Andy. He sits on the floor beside his brother and begins to sign to him.
"I will be fine, Steven," Andy signs in response.
Tyson whines and licks Andy's hand.
"Good boy, Tyson," he acknowledges.
"We need to pack and prepare to leave, Andy," Logan states.
"Wait, what? Why?" Andy asks, taken aback.
"Mr. Mark was quite disrespectful to my mother just now, and she has decided we should no longer stay here," Kendall explains.
"I expected him to exhibit better manners than Lucas and Audrey," Andy comments.
"Us too," Katie agrees.
Everyone is getting their bags ready.
"I have an idea to lift our spirits. How about we head outside and play with Tyson?" Andy suggests.
They all make their way to the backyard.
"Have you taught him any new tricks recently, Steven?" Logan inquires.
"Definitely," Steven replies.
"He's been teaching Tyson a bunch of tricks using sign language," Andy adds. "Stevie, do you want to show everyone what you've taught Tyson?"
"Sure, Andy," Steven responds.
He demonstrates various signs, and Tyson performs each trick perfectly.
Everyone claps, including Lucas and Audrey, who unexpectedly join them outside.
"How did you manage that? Is he deaf?" Lucas questions.
"Tyson isn't deaf. Just back off. We've had enough of your bad vibes," Andy retorts.
"We apologize for what happened earlier at the horse ranch," Audrey says.
"We don't believe you," Kendall replies, crossing his arms skeptically.
"It's true, we really are sorry," Lucas insists. "We'll show you. We'll tell our dad the truth."
"Yeah, we'll let him know that Andy was being honest about what went down," Audrey adds.
"Seriously? You'll actually tell him?" Andy asks.
"Absolutely," Lucas and Audrey confirm.
"Thanks," Andy murmurs.
"If Tyson isn't deaf, why was Steven communicating with him using sign language?" Audrey inquires.
"Steven has been instructing Tyson in sign language since he was a young pup. It's a testament to the strength of their bond," Andy explains. "What's with all the curiosity?"
"Can Steven teach us sign language too?" Lucas interjects.
"Excuse me?" Andy's eyes widen in surprise.
"Audrey and I are eager to learn. You picked it up from Steven, right?" Lucas persists.
"No, I learned it on my own and then taught it to him. We did it way back when. It takes years of dedication and practice," Andy responds.
Lucas expresses a burning desire to learn sign language with Audrey, no matter how long it takes to become proficient.
"If you're so eager to learn, why not enroll in a class? You don't need Steven to teach you. You two have shown no kindness to him, and you just met him today. Why would he want to share his special skill with bullies like you?" Andy challenges. "I may be younger than him, but I am his protector. I will always stand by his side. You'll have to go through me to get to him."
Lucas admits, "You're right. We haven't been very kind to him today, but we can change."
"Mean-spirited individuals don't transform overnight. Change takes time," Logan affirms.
Mr. Mark steps outside and addresses the children, "Please return indoors; we need to have a discussion."
The children promptly make their way back to the living room.
"I acknowledge that I made an error earlier. Kendall and Katie, I apologize for my outburst directed at your mother. Andy, I regret not believing your account regarding the horse ranch incident," he states.
"Dad, Audrey and I have something to confess. We were part of the situation. I was the one who pushed Andy first, and Audrey lied to protect me. We are truly sorry, Dad, and we will strive to be more truthful moving forward," Lucas admits.
"I appreciate your honesty," Mr. Mark responds.
"We will agree to this arrangement under one stipulation: you must begin to enforce discipline with Lucas and Audrey more consistently when they misbehave, rather than brushing off their antics as mere teenage theatrics," Ms. Knight asserts.
"Understood, I will comply," Mr. Mark replies. "How would you all feel about a delightful outing on the lake tomorrow? I have a splendid boat, and we could indulge in some exhilarating fun. Jet skis are also at our disposal."
"Wow, I've always dreamed of riding one!" Carlos exclaims with enthusiasm.
"Why haven't you done it yet?" Lucas inquires.
"Logan believes I would mess up and fall off," Carlos responds.
"I never said that," Logan interjects.
"Yes, you did," Carlos insists.
"No, I mentioned that your adventurous spirit and endless energy might make it challenging for you to adhere to safety instructions. I have complete faith in your abilities, Carlitos. I apologize if my words made you feel otherwise; my only concern is your safety," Logan clarifies.
"Oh, I see now. I misunderstood you, Logie," Carlos admits.
"That's perfectly alright, Carlos," Logan reassures him.
Later that evening, as everyone prepares for bed, Kendall speaks up.
"Mom, please tell me you and Mr. Mark are sleeping in separate rooms," he requests.
"We are. Why do you ask?" Ms. Knight replies.
"You know exactly why. The things adults do behind closed doors at night," Kendall says, shuddering at the thought.
"Oh, Kendall, I understand your concerns, and rest assured, we won't be engaging in what you fear," Ms. Knight assures him.
"I don't understand. What's he worried about?" Carlos asks, puzzled.
"He's worried that Mr. Mark and my mom will share a bed and be intimate," Katie blurts out.
James erupts in laughter at her bluntness, while Logan feels a wave of embarrassment at her knowledge of such matters. Carlos, realizing the source of Kendall's anxiety, offers a sympathetic pat on his shoulder.
"Well, that was certainly an unexpected revelation," Mr. Mark comments.
"Indeed," Lucas agrees.
"Absolutely," Audrey adds.
"You're the highlight of my day, Katie," James says, winding down from their laughter-filled exchange and pulling her into a warm hug. "I probably shouldn't have cracked up at your quip about Kendall fretting over your mom and Mr. Mark getting cozy, but your delivery was priceless."
"I wasn't aiming for humor. I saw Logan go pale as a sheet, like he'd seen a ghost. I think I might have hit a nerve," Katie explains.
"You didn't upset me, just caught me by surprise," Logan reassures her.
"I'm sorry," Katie says sincerely.
"No harm done, Katie. No need to worry," Logan assures her.
With tensions eased, the group eventually turns in for the night.
