Chapter Twenty-Six: Quirk Revealed
"Are you sure about this?" Kagome shifted in her seat as they awaited the doctor's arrival. "I've been healthy for several years now."
She watched as Touya folded his arms over his chest, "Better safe than sorry. Besides, we have no idea if there's some sort of hidden damage we don't know about. It's better to be safe about these sorts of things."
Her brows furrowed with concern.
While he was right to some degree, she also knew that it'd be impossible to determine if she really had been poisoned medically speaking.
The two of them paused as a faint knock came at the door and a doctor made his way in.
"Miss Higurashi," He greeted her. "So I requested all of your previous lab results. I heard that there was a concern for Thallium poisoning."
The doctor then glanced at Touya who nodded in affirmation.
"What I can say is that Thallium is a highly toxic element. It can be detected in a person's system for up to two months after exposure. Unfortunately it's too far past your exposure for us to determine if that was the exact cause of your illness." The doctor then gestured towards her charts, "However I noticed something interesting. Your blood results would often go into different variations. With all of your readings crashing and then picking up again by the next test. Each time readings for a quirk gene surfaced in each spike of your results." The doctor continued, "Based on what's been described here, for the length of time you might have been exposed to Thallium you should have permanent neurological damage."
His gaze lifted to meet hers, "I believe that your survival was neither an accident nor the result of you being exposed less. I ran an additional test with the blood sample you provided this morning and found the genetic makeup for a restorative type quirk."
Kagome felt her breath freeze in her throat.
"Miss Higurashi, you're alive today because of your quirk." He pushed onwards, "I believe that your first exposure to the poison sent your body into shock. Like any quirk, it was still weak and undeveloped. So the more you were exposed, the harder your power worked to save you. At this point, it's safe to assume that your quirk has learned how to effectively deal with Thallium."
"So you're saying that she's now immune?" Touya's question was barely above a whisper.
"This is all conjecture but given her symptoms and length of time the illness had progressed, that would be my assumption." The doctor than passed a card into her awaiting hands, "That's the clinic of a doctor that specializes in cases like yours. I would suggest setting up a meeting and having them run a full panel on you. Who knows, given what you've already accomplished, you might just find that you have the strongest healing quirk in the nation."
Kagome peered down at the name of the card.
Dr. Kyudai Garaki
"If you'd like we can try running tests on some of the items you used around the time you fell ill to see if any traces of Thallium remain but I wouldn't get my hopes up." The doctor then rose to his feet, "As for everything else, you have a perfectly clean bill of health. Congratulations, Miss Higurashi."
With that he left the room and all of her thoughts began to race.
"Kitten," Touya reached for her as her legs gave out from under her when she'd tried to stand. "I've got you." He pulled her to his chest.
How was she supposed to feel knowing that the only reason she was alive was because of a quirk she never even knew she'd had?
"He actually tried to kill me." Her mind circled that thought over and over again.
Suddenly, all the times where Houjo had hovered over her in 'concern' began to fall together.
She was never someone he cared about. She was just a 'toy' to him. Something he felt that he could break at his own discretion.
Her hands knotted into fists.
"Touya," Kagome lifted her head to meet her partner's gaze. "I want to be there when you arrest that bastard. I want to watch the look on his face as he sees everything he's worked for crumble into nothing."
She wanted revenge.
Her significant other pulled her further into his chest, "We'll be hearing from our people tomorrow. Hopefully we'll have some good news then."
Kagome nodded faintly.
She would not miss her one opportunity to watch as Houjo's entire world fell apart.
"Hey," Touya lifted her chin with his thumb and index finger. "Where do you want vacation at? I feel like hitting up a beach."
Kagome's expression softened as a small smile crossed her lips.
"I hear Shirahama beach is beautiful this time of year." She answered, circling her arms around his middle.
Honestly she'd love to have a wedding there on the beach. Saying their vows by the sea with the sand between their feet sounded amazing. Plus doing it at sundown would also add to the romantic atmosphere. She honestly couldn't imagine a more perfect ceremony.
Touya led her out of the doctor's office and down the familiar streets of the city.
"You know," He started slowly. "I'm thinking about hanging up my costume. I'm getting sick of the circus."
She blinked as he curled a possessive arm around her waist.
"I'd go nuts if I don't have some kind of job though so I was thinking about changing careers. Probably something less dangerous." He turned his head to throw her a confident grin, "Think I should do modeling next?"
That go her to laugh.
"I'd think you'd murder half the female population of you did a modeling gig. Besides, we both know that you'd miss the fighting too much." She prodded at his cheek playfully, "Why not just move somewhere more quiet? I hear Nabu Island's pro is getting ready to retire. So you could transfer there."
It was a small island town with few incidents and a vacation hotspot for tourists. It sounded like a wonderful place to retire to if she were being honest.
Touya's grin widened, "Alright then, I'll submit the request. Just know that I'm dragging you with me."
She laughed heartily at that.
She wouldn't have it any other way.
