It was a brisk autumn morning, the air crisp and cool. The morning silence was broken only by the faint whistle of the train bound for the Mystic Ruins from Station Square.
"It's really been busy since the hyper rail was installed," a familiar blue blur muttered to himself, casually strolling towards his destination, arms folded behind his head.
"You know, Sonic, you don't have to walk on my account. I'm sure you'd rather be running," came the soft voice of his walking companion. Sonic glanced over at Cosmo and smiled.
"It's no sweat, Cosmo. I don't mind walking with you. Besides, we're headed to the same place—it'd be rude to just speed off and leave you behind."
"You're sweet. Tails is lucky to have such good friends to rely on," Cosmo said with a smile as she continued walking alongside Sonic.
"Well, remember, Cosmo—we're your friends too. We're all in this together," Sonic replied, flashing his signature grin and giving her a thumbs-up. Cosmo blushed slightly at his words.
"Pardon me, I misspoke. What I meant is, Tails speaks so highly of all of you, so it's nice to see his words ring true. But thank you... for being my friend as well," she added softly, her voice growing quieter towards the end.
As they spoke, they arrived at Tails' townhouse—a cozy home set on a nice plot of land just on the edge of Station Square. It overlooked the rolling countryside, gently transitioning from the bustle of the city to the peaceful, open fields beyond.
"He's not in right now…" Cosmo noted, glancing down at her watch. "It's not even 6 yet, so he's probably still in his workshop," she said as they stopped at the front door.
"No sweat! I'll just go wake him up. Lil' bro always works himself to sleep!" Sonic chuckled before racing off to the side of the house.
"But Sonic, he's not sleeping, he's—" Cosmo began, then laughed as she watched him disappear. "Well, I guess he'll find out soon enough," she said with a chuckle, stepping inside Tails' home.
Sonic approached the side of the workshop, his curiosity piqued by the sound of faint rustling. As he rounded the corner, he was met with an unexpected sight: Tails, shirtless and wearing only track pants, was poised on top of a narrow, three-inch pole. His physique was chiseled, every movement and stretch defining specific muscles through his fur and glistening with the sheen of sweat from his intense training. The morning sun filtered through the trees, casting a golden hue over him.
Tails moved with a fluid grace, his body shifting seamlessly as he executed a series of Tai Chi movements. In one hand, he held a sleek, ornate sword, which he wielded with precision and calm. The sword cut through the air in slow, deliberate arcs, its edge catching the light and creating a mesmerizing dance of reflections. Each movement was perfectly synchronized with his breathing, every shift of weight and adjustment of stance executed with immaculate control.
Sonic stood quietly, his eyes widening in awe as he watched Tails' focused routine. The pole was barely wide enough for a foot, yet Tails balanced effortlessly, his posture unwavering. Sonic could see the concentration etched into Tails' face, the way his eyes were half-closed in deep focus, and how every muscle seemed to respond instinctively to the flow of the sword.
The movements were both precise and fluid, a beautiful blend of strength and serenity. Tails performed a series of sweeping strikes, each one so controlled that the sword barely disturbed the air around it. The way he shifted his weight, pivoting on the pole with such ease, was nothing short of mesmerizing. It was as if he and the pole had become one entity, moving in perfect harmony.
Sonic's admiration grew with every passing second. He could see the discipline and dedication Tails had poured into perfecting this routine. The movements were a testament to his training and skill, and Sonic couldn't help but be impressed by the sheer mastery displayed before him.
After a few minutes, Tails executed a particularly intricate series of movements, his sword slicing through the air in a graceful arc. As he completed the final position, he took a deep breath, holding it for a moment before exhaling slowly. The routine seemed to be coming to a close.
In one fluid motion, Tails lifted himself off the pole, twisting mid-air and performing a flawless backflip. He landed softly on the ground with a barely audible thud, his expression shifting from intense focus to a relaxed, satisfied smile.
As he straightened up, his eyes fell upon Sonic. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand still. Sonic's jaw hung slightly open, his eyes wide with a mixture of awe and surprise. Tails' smile widened, and he chuckled softly, brushing a stray lock of fur from his face.
"Well, well, look who decided to join the show," Tails said, his voice warm and playful. "I didn't expect an audience."
Sonic shook his head, blinking as if waking from a trance. "Whoa, Tails, that was… incredible. I had no idea you were into Karate. Where did you even learn all that?"
Tails shrugged, a playful glint in his eye. "Oh, you know, just a little something I picked up from Mr. Tanaka. Oh, and its not karate it's Tai Ch. Keeps me sharp, and it's a good way to clear my mind."
Sonic laughed, still trying to wrap his head around the display he'd just witnessed. "Well, you definitely impressed me. I've got to hand it to you, that was something."
Tails grinned, his gaze shifting to the training area with a sense of pride. "Thanks, Sonic. It's always nice to have a bit of recognition. Now, what brings you here so early?"
Sonic grinned, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "Tails, really? Breakfast… you know… BREAKFAST?!"
Tails' eyes widened as the realization dawned on him. "OH!" He smiled, setting aside his Tai Chi equipment with a mix of relief and excitement. "Yes, I remember now! I haven't been able to think about anything else… even during my training."
He glanced around, leaning in with a conspiratorial whisper. "Is everything set up?"
Sonic shrugged his shoulders playfully, walking over to Tails' Tai Chi sword and giving it a dramatic flourish. "I don't think so. I must have forgotten what I needed to do."
Tails' face momentarily took on a look of horror before he realized Sonic was joking. "Oh, you jerk," he laughed, shaking his head. "Alright, let me go get cleaned up."
Sonic smiled, putting an arm around his little brother as they headed towards the house together.
Tails and Sonic walked into the parlor, the cozy room decorated with warm hues and comfortable furniture. As they entered, Tails' eyes fell on Cosmo, who was seated on the couch, her presence a serene contrast to the energetic training Tails had just finished.
"Oh, hey Cosmo!" Tails said with a start, his eyes widening slightly as he noticed her. "I didn't realize you were here. Sorry about my appearance—I was just, uh, training."
Cosmo looked up, her expression softening into a warm smile. "Oh, Tails, don't worry about it. You look just fine," she said, her tone reassuring. She stood up gracefully and walked over to him.
Before Tails could react, Cosmo enveloped him in a gentle embrace. The closeness was comforting, and Tails felt a soothing warmth spread through him. As she held him, she noticed the subtle scent of the workshop mixed with the lingering musk of his training. It created an oddly intimate moment, like a shared connection through the sensory of the embrace.
When she pulled back slightly, her eyes softened as she noticed the sheen of sweat throughout his fur, which glistened subtly in the room's light. Her cheeks flushed ever so slightly, but she kept her smile gentle and genuine.
"You've been working really hard on yourself," Cosmo said, her voice carrying a hint of admiration. "It's impressive, really."
Tails smiled, feeling a mix of pride and a bit of self-consciousness. "Thanks, Cosmo. I was just trying to stay sharp. I should probably go take a quick shower, though."
As Tails headed toward the bathroom, Cosmo watched him with a soft, thoughtful smile. She couldn't help but admire how his form had grown stronger over time, his fur subtly outlining the results of his dedication to training. The way he carried himself now, with confidence and poise, stirred something warm within her.
Just before Tails disappeared into the bathroom, Cosmo called out playfully, "Don't take too long, okay? I'm... starting to really appreciate how all that training's paying off." She blushed slightly, realizing how bold her words sounded, but she didn't regret them.
Tails looked back with a grin, his cheeks slightly flushed. "Got it. I'll be quick!"
As the door closed behind him, Cosmo sat back down on the couch, her cheeks flushed and her thoughts a mix of admiration and a flutter of something more personal. The connection she felt, both sensory and emotional, lingered in the air, making her smile as she waited for Tails to return.
As Tails disappeared into the bathroom, Sonic glanced over at Cosmo, a knowing smile playing on his lips. He could see the admiration in her eyes, the way her expression softened with genuine affection.
"You really like him, don't you, Cosmo?" Sonic asked with a warm, understanding tone.
Cosmo's cheeks flushed slightly, but she didn't try to hide her feelings. She nodded, her smile full of adoration. "I do. I really do. Tails is amazing. His wit, his intelligence, and the way he cares about everyone—it's all so captivating. And today, seeing him so dedicated and focused... it's only made me appreciate him more."
She paused, her gaze drifting thoughtfully. "His heart, his compassion—everything about him just draws me in. I've seen so many facets of him, and it's definitely increased my attraction to him. It's hard not to be drawn to someone with such depth and kindness. I truly do love Tails, Sonic."
Sonic's smile grew, his eyes reflecting a warm sincerity. "Well, Cosmo, I can tell you that Tails is head over heels for you too. And I think you both are perfect for each other. He's always talking about you, and seeing the way you two connect, it's clear that you bring out the best in each other."
Cosmo's smile widened, her heart lifting at Sonic's words. "Thank you, Sonic. That means a lot. I just hope I can be as good a friend to him as he's been to me."
"You already are," Sonic assured her with a reassuring nod. "You both have something really special, and it's great to see it unfold. I'm really happy for you both."
As Sonic's words settled, the atmosphere in the room felt warmer, filled with a sense of shared joy and genuine connection. Cosmo's heart fluttered with a mix of happiness and anticipation as she waited for Tails to return, feeling more confident than ever about the bond she shared with him.
Tails stepped into the shower, the cool tiles under his feet grounding him as the warm water began to flow. A gentle hiss filled the space, and the steady stream of water cascaded over his fur, washing away the remnants of his morning training. The rhythmic sound echoed softly, almost lulling, as steam rose and swirled in the air.
Closing his eyes, he let the water soak into his fur, its warmth loosening the tension in his muscles. The gentle pressure of the stream seemed to help clear the mental clutter, bringing him back to the present moment. It wasn't just the physical grime being washed away, but some of the uncertainty that had been swirling in his mind.
He reached for the soap, lathering it between his hands until it frothed into a rich foam. As he worked it through his fur, the light scent filled the air—a sharp contrast to the sweat and effort of the workout. With each deliberate motion, he scrubbed away the sweat and dirt, feeling the soap bubble and slide through his fur, leaving him clean and refreshed.
Yet, even with the calming rhythm of the shower, his thoughts drifted back to Cosmo's words earlier. Her compliment lingered in his mind, unexpected and surprisingly impactful. "She likes my body…" he mused, running his hands through the sudsy foam as the water rinsed it away. It was a simple statement, but it carried weight. He hadn't given much thought to how others saw him—his focus had always been on his inventions, his mind, and the ways he could help.
"I've got to take care of myself," he thought, feeling a mixture of surprise and determination. It wasn't just for appearances, but because Cosmo's comment reminded him of something deeper—the importance of being strong, not just for himself, but for her and for everyone he cared about. It was a new motivation that gave him pause.
The warmth of the water wrapped around him like a cocoon, helping him to relax even further, his mind gradually clearing. He took a deep breath, letting the steam rise around him, almost as if it was carrying away the lingering doubts. The shower wasn't just a moment to clean up; it was a brief respite, a place to sort through everything he was feeling.
With the last of the soap rinsed away and the water running clear, Tails stood there for a moment longer, letting the peace of the moment settle in. When he finally turned off the water, he felt lighter, clearer. He grabbed a towel, patting his fur dry as a quiet resolve took root within him.
There was something different about today—something more significant than the usual routine. And as he finished drying off, the realization stayed with him. Whatever came next, he would be ready.
As the morning sun streamed through the windows of Tails' cozy townhouse, Sonic's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and gave a playful groan. "Looks like I've got to rush off and meet Amy. You two have a great time, alright?"
With a quick wave, Sonic dashed out the door, leaving Tails and Cosmo alone. Tails, freshly dressed and looking dapper in a smart outfit for their breakfast date, descended the stairs with a mix of excitement and nerves.
Cosmo's eyes lit up as she saw him. "Wow, Tails, you look absolutely handsome!" She reached out and pecked him on the cheek, laying her head on his shoulder, her hand lingering over his heart. "It's beating so fast. Are you okay?"
Tails tried to play it cool, a smirk on his face as he attempted to channel Sonic's nonchalant demeanor. "Oh, yeah, just… you know, excited for breakfast."
But despite his efforts, his cheeks flushed slightly, and he couldn't quite mask his nervous energy. Cosmo chuckled softly at his endearing attempt to be smooth.
"Let's walk to the café," Tails suggested, eager to calm his nerves. Cosmo nodded, and they walked hand-in-hand, enjoying the gentle morning breeze. The warmth of their connection filled the air between them, each step heightening their shared anticipation.
As they strolled, Cosmo stumbled slightly, twisting her ankle. She winced in pain, but before she could react further, Tails was at her side. Without hesitation, he swept her up into his arms, cradling her bridal-style.
Cosmo felt the firm strength in his arms and couldn't help but admire how toned he had become. "Tails, you've really been working out, haven't you? You're incredibly strong."
Tails, holding her close, felt a rush of pride and a touch of embarrassment at her compliment. "Just trying to stay in shape," he said, though his smile betrayed his satisfaction.
They continued to the café, with Tails carrying Cosmo effortlessly. The closeness and the warmth of the moment made their hearts swell, each step toward the restaurant solidifying their bond.
As they approached the café, Cosmo gently shifted in Tails' arms, testing her ankle. "I think I can walk again," she said softly.
Tails carefully set her down, his hands lingering on her arms as he examined her ankle with concern. "You heal really fast," he noted with a reassuring smile.
Cosmo gave a grateful smile and took Tails' arm, leaning slightly on him as they walked towards the entrance. "Thank you for carrying me. You're so good to me."
They entered the café, and the scene that greeted them was nothing short of enchanting. The main room had been closed for a private event, and Tails gently guided Cosmo past the velvety curtains. The space had been transformed into a stunning breakfast venue. Floral decorations adorned every surface, lending the room a vibrant yet elegant atmosphere. Bouquets of roses, lilies, and daisies added splashes of color and fragrance, intricately arranged on tables and throughout the room, creating a perfect blend of beauty and warmth.
A large table was set with an array of fancy breakfast foods—croissants, pastries, fruit, and delicacies that looked almost too beautiful to eat. The table was elegantly draped with a crisp white tablecloth, and fine china and silverware were meticulously arranged.
Tails beamed with pride and joy as he looked around. Cosmo's eyes widened in surprise and delight. "What's all this?" she asked, her voice filled with wonder.
Tails grinned ear to ear. "We wanted to throw a breakfast party! A special one, just for us and our closest friends."
As they walked further in, they saw their friends gathered, enjoying the spread and mingling. Sonic and Amy were chatting animatedly, Amy's eyes twinkling with the satisfaction of her floral arrangements. Shadow and Amanda were engaged in a conversation with Knuckles and Rouge, who were in the midst of explaining some recent adventures with a playful banter.
The space also had a DJ setup, with a sleek sound system and a professional DJ ready to set the mood. The gentle hum of music in the background added a lively touch to the elegant setting.
Cosmo took in the scene, her heart swelling with affection and surprise. "This is incredible, Tails. I had no idea."
Tails chuckled, his excitement palpable. "We wanted to do something special for you, Kinda like you did for us during our space adventure. And it's all thanks to everyone's help and planning."
As they made their way to the table, the warmth of their friends' presence and the thoughtfulness behind the surprise created a truly memorable moment. The café, with its mix of elegance and vibrancy, was the perfect setting for the day's celebrations.
After everyone had enjoyed the delicious breakfast spread, Sonic, Knuckles, and Shadow were huddled near the DJ booth, whispering conspiratorially. Sonic, with his typical enthusiasm, waved his hand to quiet the room. "Alright, folks! Time to kick this party up a notch!"
Knuckles grinned, his excitement barely contained. "That's right! Time for a little karaoke!"
Sonic shot Knuckles a mischievous grin before gesturing to the stage. "Let's start with a classic. Shadow, Knux, we're doing 'It Doesn't Matter.'"
Knuckles confidently took the microphone, but the moment the music kicked in, it was clear his voice wasn't quite built for the high notes. He butchered the first verse, his tone wavering between enthusiasm and off-key notes, earning a few playful groans from the crowd. Sonic stepped in, barely managing to get through his part, his usual bravado not translating to perfect pitch.
Sonic, grinning sheepishly, looked over to Shadow. "Okay, Shadow, your turn."
Shadow narrowed his eyes, adjusting the microphone. "If we're doing this, we're doing it right." His voice was smooth and controlled as he began his part, hitting the notes perfectly. His rendition was nothing short of flawless, sending a wave of awe through the audience. Even Sonic had to admit he was impressed.
Amanda, watching from her seat, swooned as Shadow nailed the performance. "He's so hot…" she muttered under her breath, her eyes practically sparkling with admiration.
Amy, who sat beside Amanda, teasingly caught her before she could fully melt into the chair. "Oh no, don't pass out on us! He's just getting started."
Shadow smirked at the reaction, stepping back from the mic after nailing the final note. "And that's how it's done."
The crowd erupted into cheers and laughter, Sonic giving Shadow a playful nudge. "Show off."
As the excitement from the performance settled, Tails stepped forward, surprising everyone by taking the stage solo. The room quieted as Tails picked up the microphone. He scanned the group, but his eyes locked onto Cosmo, who was seated at a table near the center of the room.
"This one," Tails said softly into the mic, "is for Cosmo."
The lights dimmed, and the music started—gentle, romantic, and filled with emotion. Tails began to sing, his voice carrying a vulnerability and tenderness that made the entire room go still. His words were soft but powerful, each lyric seeming to speak directly to Cosmo's heart. He sang with passion, his eyes never leaving hers, as he slowly descended from the stage and made his way toward her.
The room held its breath, enchanted by the way Tails' voice resonated. Even Sonic and Knuckles, who had been goofing around moments earlier, were now silent, watching in awe as their little brother poured his heart out through the music.
Cosmo's eyes welled up with tears, her heart pounding in her chest as Tails sang just for her, his devotion clear in every note. She felt an overwhelming sense of love and admiration for the fox in front of her, and she wasn't the only one. Amy, Amanda, and Rouge exchanged glances, completely taken by the raw emotion Tails was showing.
When the final note lingered in the air, Tails knelt down before Cosmo, still holding the microphone. The silence was thick with emotion, and Cosmo's hand rose to her mouth as she whispered, "That was… so beautiful."
Tails, heart racing but filled with determination, reached into his pocket. His eyes never left Cosmo's as he pulled out a small velvet box and opened it to reveal a delicate ring, glistening in the soft light.
The entire room seemed to gasp in unison. Amy's hands flew to her mouth, her eyes wide in surprise. Amanda let out a soft, breathless "Oh my gosh…" while Rouge raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed. None of them had any idea what Tails had planned.
"Cosmo," Tails began, his voice trembling slightly with emotion. "I've always admired your kindness, your strength, and your heart. You've changed my life in ways I never thought possible. I want to spend the rest of my life by your side. Will you marry me?"
Cosmo's tears fell freely now, her heart overflowing with love. She was speechless for a moment, her hand shaking as she reached out to touch his. "Yes, Tails. Yes, I will."
The room erupted in cheers, their friends clapping and shouting their congratulations. Sonic pumped his fist in the air with a triumphant "Woohoo!" while Knuckles let out a loud, excited cheer. Shadow remained stoic, but even he offered a small nod of approval, his usual cool exterior slightly softened by the moment.
Tails slipped the ring onto Cosmo's finger, his hands trembling slightly. As she stood, he pulled her into a tight embrace, their friends surrounding them with warm applause and cheers, making the moment even more perfect.
Earlier that week, in Sonic's living room:
The living room was filled with the soft glow of the TV, the screen alive with fast-paced action as Tails and Sonic sat side by side on the couch, controllers in hand. They were deep into one of their favorite games, replaying a level they'd mastered countless times before—*Halo 3's* iconic Warthog Run. The familiar sound of explosions, revving engines, and frantic radio chatter echoed in the room as they navigated the chaotic landscape.
Tails expertly maneuvered the Warthog through narrow corridors, dodging falling debris and enemy fire, while Sonic, riding shotgun, unleashed a barrage of bullets at the oncoming Covenant forces. They had this routine down to a science—switching between driver and gunner, their teamwork flawless after years of playing together.
"Alright, I got this part," Sonic grinned, his fingers deftly working the controls as they sped down a crumbling bridge. "You better be ready to gun 'em down, Tails."
"Yeah, yeah," Tails chuckled, his focus on the screen as he lined up his shots, the Warthog bouncing over obstacles. "You just keep the pedal to the metal, and I'll do the rest."
The two of them were in sync, swapping roles seamlessly at each checkpoint. This was muscle memory at this point—both of them had probably driven this stretch of *Halo* hundreds of times, but somehow, it never got old.
Suddenly, as they barreled through a series of tight turns, Tails let out a small sigh. "You know, Sonic... I've been thinking about something."
Sonic didn't take his eyes off the screen, but his ears perked up. "What's up, little bro?"
There was a brief silence, only the sound of the Warthog's engine rumbling as they sped over a chasm. Then, with casual ease, Tails dropped a bombshell.
"I'm gonna ask Cosmo to marry me."
The Warthog swerved wildly as Sonic's fingers slipped, the gravity of what Tails said hitting him like a ton of bricks. He veered off the path without thinking, sending them both plummeting off a cliff. The screen flashed "GAME OVER" as the Warthog spiraled into the abyss, followed by the familiar death music.
Sonic sat frozen, his grip still tight on the controller as he stared at the screen, stunned. After a beat, he slowly turned his head toward Tails, who looked completely unbothered, casually setting his controller down.
"...What?" Sonic finally managed, pausing the game as his brain struggled to catch up.
Tails blinked, glancing over at his best friend as if nothing was out of the ordinary. "I said I'm gonna ask Cosmo to marry me."
Sonic was silent for a moment, still processing the information. Then, slowly, he placed his controller down too, turning to face Tails fully, his expression a mix of disbelief and pure joy.
"You're serious?"
Tails nodded, a soft smile on his face. "Yeah. I've been thinking about it for a while now. It just feels... right."
Sonic blinked, then let out a short laugh, shaking his head in disbelief. "Dude... That's amazing! I mean—wow!" He rubbed the back of his head, grinning widely. "I wasn't expecting that, but... I'm happy for you, man."
Tails chuckled, feeling a wave of warmth at Sonic's reaction. "Thanks. I haven't told anyone else yet, though. I still gotta figure out the perfect moment."
Sonic gave him a playful nudge. "Well, you better make it good. Cosmo's one of a kind."
"I know," Tails said softly, his mind already racing with ideas. "I really want it to be special."
Sonic grinned, his earlier shock now replaced by excitement. "Well, whatever you do, it's gonna be perfect. But, uh, maybe let's not propose while playing *Halo.*"
Tails laughed. "Yeah, I think I'll save it for something a little more romantic."
Sonic grabbed his controller again, restarting the level. "Alright then, back to business. You drive this time. Let's try not to fall off any cliffs, though."
Tails smirked, taking the controller. "Deal."
Sonic and Tails made their way down the quiet hallways of the underground training facility where they had arranged to meet Shadow and Knuckles. Tails' nerves were visible—his tails swished anxiously behind him, and he tugged at the edge of his gloves, clearly uneasy. Sonic, always the confident one, gave his little brother a reassuring pat on the back as they approached the door to the meeting room.
"Relax, bud. You've got this," Sonic said with his trademark grin.
Tails nodded, taking a deep breath as they stepped inside the room. Shadow was already there, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, looking as stoic as ever. Knuckles sat in one of the chairs, reclining like he didn't have a care in the world. When the two newcomers entered, Knuckles sat up, his interest piqued.
"Well, well, what's this all about?" Knuckles asked with a smirk. "You two look like you're about to drop a bomb on us."
Sonic glanced at Tails, giving him the stage. "Actually, Tails here has some big news. Go on, little bro."
Tails cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his head nervously. "Uh, yeah… I do." His voice was a bit shaky at first, but he steadied himself. "I'm, um… I'm gonna ask Cosmo to marry me."
For a moment, there was silence. Then, Knuckles burst out laughing, throwing his head back in amusement. "You?! Proposing?! HA! Oh, that's rich!"
But before Knuckles could go any further, Shadow swiftly backhanded him in the ribs, his dark eyes narrowing in warning. Knuckles doubled over, clutching his side, suddenly serious.
"Ow! Okay, okay, I get it…" Knuckles groaned, straightening up and rubbing his ribs. He glanced at Tails again, realizing the young fox wasn't joking. "Wait... you're serious?"
Tails nodded, a little more confidence creeping into his voice. "Yeah, I am."
Knuckles blinked, his tone shifting to something more genuine. "Well, in that case... congrats, little buddy. I didn't see that coming."
Shadow, having remained silent up to this point, pushed himself off the wall, his expression neutral but with a hint of approval in his gaze. "Well, well… About time, Miles." He paused for a beat, letting the weight of his words sink in. Then, almost imperceptibly, the corner of his mouth curled into a smirk. "So, how can we help?"
Tails let out a small sigh of relief as the tension melted away. Sonic, still grinning ear to ear, took over. "Glad you asked, Shadow, 'cause we've got a plan."
Knuckles straightened up, more interested now. "A plan? What kind of plan?"
Sonic leaned in, his voice low and conspiratorial. "Alright, so here's the deal. We're gonna throw a breakfast party. Something fancy, with all the bells and whistles. The catch is, Cosmo has no idea it's actually a setup for Tails to propose. We're gonna need all of you to pull this off. Sound good?"
Shadow raised an eyebrow but seemed intrigued. "A breakfast party, huh? That's… unique."
Knuckles scratched his head, still processing everything. "Okay, so... fancy food, decorations, the works. I can help with that. Who's handling what?"
Sonic nodded. "Amy and Amanda will be in charge of decorating the place—lots of floral stuff, really elegant. You, Knux, will handle the music."
Knuckles grinned wide. "Oh, I've got that covered. DJ's already booked."
"Good," Sonic said, giving him a thumbs-up. "Shadow, I know this isn't exactly your thing, but I'm gonna need your help funding it."
Shadow smirked, shaking his head. "Of course you do. But fine. If we're doing this, let's do it right." He glanced at Tails, his expression softening just a fraction. "You sure you're ready for this?"
Tails met Shadow's gaze, feeling the weight of the moment. "I am. I've never been more sure of anything."
Shadow gave a slight nod of approval. "Then count me in."
Sonic clapped his hands together, his energy infectious. "Alright! So we're all in? This is gonna be epic."
Knuckles chuckled, crossing his arms. "I can't believe we're doing a breakfast party for a proposal... but yeah, I'm in."
"Same here," Shadow added, ever the cool one. "Let's make sure this goes off without a hitch."
Tails, his nervousness fading, smiled gratefully at his friends. "Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it."
Sonic threw an arm around Tails, giving him a brotherly squeeze. "Don't sweat it, buddy. This is gonna be one for the history books."
Back to Present:
The sound of quiet and content murmurs filled the cafe as everyone finished their breakfast, the group of friends basking in the warmth of the morning and each other's company. Tails had just finished explaining everything that had led up to this moment—the planning, the private meetings, the nerves, the help from Shadow, Knuckles, and Sonic. Cosmo was still smiling from ear to ear, her hand resting on Tails' arm, her heart full.
Rouge was the first to break the silence, leaning back in her chair with a playful smirk. "Well, well, Tails. You sly fox." She elbowed Knuckles in the ribs, giving him a teasing glance. "Why can't you ever be that smooth, huh?"
Knuckles rubbed his ribs, feigning a look of innocence. "Hey, I've got my own style. Besides, didn't I book the DJ for this whole thing?" He grinned proudly, but Rouge only rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, yeah, tough guy. I guess I'll give you credit for that," Rouge teased, making everyone chuckle.
Amy, sitting next to Sonic, giggled, her eyes sparkling. "I knew something was up, but wow, Tails! You pulled off something really special today. Cosmo's a lucky girl."
Cosmo blushed at the attention, squeezing Tails' hand affectionately. "Yes I really am a lucky one," she said softly, looking up at him with that deep admiration in her eyes.
Amanda leaned in with a grin, nudging Shadow playfully. "You know, you could learn a thing or two from Tails here. You are smooth, but that was the most romantic thing I've ever seen."
Shadow smirked but gave a small nod of approval toward Tails. "I will admit, he did well," he said quietly, the closest thing to a compliment anyone could get from him.
Amanda wasn't about to let him off the hook, though, her tone teasing. "Oh come on, Shadow. You funded the whole thing! Don't act like you're not secretly a big softy."
"Only for the right cause," Shadow replied coolly, but there was a hint of amusement in his eyes as he cradled Amanda's hand in his..
Tails looked around at his friends—his family, really—and felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. He smiled wide, his heart full as he wrapped his arm around Cosmo's waist, pulling her close.
Sonic, always the one to wrap things up with a bang, stood up, stretching. "Alright, everyone, let's gather 'round for a group picture! Come on, this moment needs to be captured in history."
Everyone started moving toward the middle of the room, gathering in front of the decorated table with the flowers and the remains of their breakfast feast. Amy pulled Cosmo next to her, Amanda stood by Shadow, and Knuckles stood by Rouge, still rubbing his ribs dramatically.
Tails took his place with Cosmo by his side, feeling the warmth of her presence as they all smiled for the camera. Sonic stood behind them, holding up the camera in front of him, angling it just right.
"Alright, say 'cheese' everyone!" Sonic called out, but at the last possible moment, he sped off with a blur of blue, the camera clicking just as he zoomed back into frame, photobombing the picture by diving right into the middle of the group with a wide grin.
"SONIC!" Amy shouted, laughing along with everyone else.
The room erupted into laughter as they checked the picture on Sonic's phone—a perfectly timed image of all of them smiling, with Sonic airborne in the middle, arms outstretched like a star.
Tails shook his head, grinning as he looked at his best friend. "Classic Sonic."
"Hey, gotta make sure it's memorable, right?" Sonic winked, his usual playful energy lighting up the room.
As they all stood there, laughing and teasing, Tails couldn't help but feel like everything had fallen perfectly into place. Surrounded by his closest friends, with Cosmo by his side, he knew this moment would be one he'd never forget.
