Worlds Collide: Triple Trouble
Big Trouble in Shang Mu Part 4
Several days later, the crowd in the Shang Mu Entertainment Zone arena buzzed with excitement. Mayor Zao stood on a grand podium, a wide smile stretching across his face as he looked out at the sea of people gathered in anticipation. At his side, Kit stood quietly, his arms folded as he surveyed the scene with calm composure. The arena was alive with energy, vibrant banners waving in the air and the lights shining bright on the competition grounds.
"Welcome, everyone, to the first Shang Mu Entertainment Zone Fist Bump Competition!" Zao's voice rang out, his words amplified by the stadium's sound system. The crowd roared in response, their cheers echoing through the massive space.
Zao continued, his voice laced with pride. "I know the recent merger of our worlds has left many of you uncertain about the future. Believe me, I have felt the same worries, but as your leader, it is my duty to ensure the happiness of my people—whether they hail from Avalice or Earth!"
The cheers grew louder as Zao raised his arms, basking in the admiration of the people.

With a satisfied smile, Zao lowered his hands, and the crowd gradually quieted. "This competition," he said, his tone becoming more serious, "is about more than just fighting. It is to show that no matter where we're born, love and cooperation can blossom in this new world of ours. And to prove it, several brave teams have thrown their lot into this competition, determined to show that their bond, their love, and their teamwork are the best of the best!"
The audience erupted in applause once more as Zao gestured grandly toward the arena floor. "And now, to introduce the teams, I will turn things over to our esteemed master of ceremonies..."
Zao paused dramatically before announcing, "Omochao!"
Omochao's familiar face appeared on the massive screens scattered across the arena, its cheerful voice booming over the excited crowd. "Hi, I'm Omochao!" it chirped, waving animatedly. "I'm so happy to be your MC for the very first Shang Mu Entertainment Zone Fist Bump Competition!"
The audience clapped and cheered, the energy in the arena palpable.
Omochao continued, "There are twelve teams competing in this exciting competition, and after a series of intense events, only one team will come out on top as the winner!" More cheers erupted from the stands as the crowd eagerly anticipated the competition ahead.
The arena gradually settled as Omochao's voice picked up once more. "Now, let's meet our amazing teams!"
One by one, Omochao introduced nine different teams, each receiving varying levels of applause. The teams hailed from different parts of the newly merged worlds, showcasing diverse skills and talents, but the crowd remained most eager for what was to come.
"And now, presenting Team Number 10... Sonic and Lilac!"
The stadium exploded with cheers as Sonic and Lilac made their way onto the field, both waving to the adoring crowd. It was clear they were the fan favorites, the cheers loud and full of excitement. Sonic grinned confidently, while Lilac gave a more reserved but warm wave, her heart racing from the overwhelming support.
"Team Number 11... Quill and Surge!"
Cheers erupted again, though not quite as enthusiastic as they had been for Sonic and Lilac. Quill stepped forward confidently, while Surge, ever rebellious, glared at the audience and made a move to flick them off. Quill, quick to act, grabbed her hand, stopping her just in time. Surge blushed furiously at the sudden gesture, her sharp edge momentarily softened.
Sonic, watching the interaction, raised an eyebrow, curious but saying nothing as he took in the odd dynamic between Quill and Surge.
"And finally, Team Number 12... Spade and Mystic!"
Lilac's eyes widened in shock as Spade entered the arena, flanked by a striking orange-furred Mobian cat girl dressed in a sleek magician's outfit. Mystic's presence was undeniably imposing, and her mysterious aura set her apart. Sonic's eyes narrowed as he recognized the outfit—he had seen something like it before, but there was no time to dwell on it.
Before either Lilac or Sonic could react to the presence of Spade and his partner, Omochao's voice filled the arena once more.
"Now that all the teams have been introduced, it's time to go over the rules!"
Omochao's voice rang out cheerfully once again, "There are two types of events in this competition: Action Events and Party Events!"
The crowd murmured with excitement as Omochao explained further. "Action Events will test not only the teams' skills but also the trust they have in one another through various physical challenges! Remember, competitors are not allowed to attack opposing teams directly, but there will be obstacles to slow your opponents down, so stay sharp!"
The crowd buzzed as Omochao continued. "Party Events, on the other hand, are minigames designed to test your trust with your partner in a more... formal setting. In both types of events, your performance will be scored by our judges, so be sure to do your best—and above all, have fun!"
Lilac tilted her head, slightly puzzled. "I'm surprised this isn't some kind of battle royale like usual."
Spade, standing nearby, let out a derisive snort. "Zao probably didn't want the new citizens to see how much he enjoys blood sports."
An Avalician competitor, overhearing, threw in their two cents, "It's not really a blood sport if all we're doing is smashing up robots, though."
Surge, ever eager for mayhem, chimed in with a smirk, "Now that sounds like something I'd enjoy."
Sonic, catching the spirit of camaraderie, grinned. "I gotta agree with Surge on this one—nothing feels better than a good bot bashing."
Surge shot a sharp glance at Sonic, clearly itching to snap back at him, but with the cameras still on her, she had to play it cool. She feigned a smirk instead and nudged Quill with her elbow. "See? Sonic gets me. Why haven't we been out on a good bot-bashing date yet?"
Quill, caught off guard by Surge's use of the word "date," turned bright red and looked away, clearly flustered. "I... uh..."
Lilac, watching the exchange, suddenly realized something, her eyes narrowing slightly, but she decided to keep quiet for now.
Before anyone else could speak, Omochao's voice returned to center stage. "The first competition will begin in one hour, and it will be an Action Event! Competitors, take your time to prepare!"
A while later, Sonic and Lilac found themselves in their designated locker room, though "locker room" was quite the understatement. The space was more like a luxurious lover's suite, complete with plush seating, ambient lighting, and... far too many romantic decorations for their liking. The two of them stood in awkward silence for a moment, both blushing as their eyes darted to the assortment of couple-centric items scattered around the room—heart-shaped cushions, soft music playing in the background, and even a private jacuzzi tucked away in the corner.
Lilac shook her head, trying to dispel the embarrassment as she focused on what had really been bothering her. "Sonic, there's something I need to talk to you about," she said, turning to face him seriously.
Sonic, always quick to catch on, folded his arms and leaned against the wall. "Yeah? What's up?"
"Did you notice anything... odd about the competition?" Lilac asked, her brow furrowed.
Sonic took on a thoughtful pose, tapping his chin. "Odd? You mean like how Quill and Surge's team is made up of two Mobians, and Spade's partner, Mystic, isn't a real Mobian either?"
Lilac's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, what? I noticed Quill and Surge being Mobians, but I didn't realize Mystic wasn't..."
Sonic nodded, his expression growing more serious. "Yeah, something's off about her. It's triggering my fight-or-flight instinct, like I've dealt with something like that before. She's not what she seems."
Lilac processed this new information quickly. "And Quill being allowed to compete, even though he's a Mobian, makes a lot more sense with Kit standing right next to Mayor Zao."
She groaned in frustration, rubbing her temples. "Do you think this whole contest is being rigged?"
Sonic shook his head slightly. "I don't think it's rigged—at least not entirely. But something's definitely going on behind the scenes."
Meanwhile, in another room...
Quill and Surge were in the midst of a heated makeout session. The intensity of their kiss filled the air with tension, the world around them momentarily forgotten. After a few long moments, Quill slowly pulled away, breaking the kiss to catch his breath. He looked into Surge's eyes, confused but needing to ask, "What the hell happened to us just acting like a couple?"
Surge smirked, her usual rebellious attitude shining through, but there was something different in her eyes this time. "Look, this is probably the only time I get to act on my own urges without being accused of being... girly," she said, her voice softening in an uncharacteristic way. "And besides, it's not like you're ugly, Quill."
Quill understood where she was coming from; Surge had never been shy about what had happened to her and Kit before they met him. Still, this was odd, even for her. He paused for a moment before responding, "If this is the kind of relationship you really want, I've got no qualms about it. But if we keep making out like this, we might be late for the competition."
Surge's eyes gleamed mischievously as she pulled back slightly. "Fine by me. Can't wait to beat that blue idiot and his girlfriend," she said with a sly grin.
Quill silently noted that, for the moment, Surge felt normal—like herself—but they were still holding each other as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
In a dimly lit surveillance room, Mayor Zao and Merga stood in front of a massive wall of screens, each displaying live footage of the various rooms occupied by the competitors. Though there was no sound, the visuals were clear—each of the teams was being carefully monitored. Zao watched with an almost serene expression, while Merga, standing beside him, had a scowl of clear disdain on her face.
"This is a dangerous game you're playing, Zao," Merga growled, her golden eyes narrowed as she crossed her arms.
Zao waved his hand dismissively, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Relax, Merga. What I'm doing is benign at best."
"Benign?" Merga scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "Manipulating the emotions of others is hardly benign. You're stirring something volatile."
Zao's smile didn't waver as he turned to face her, his tone casual. "I knew people would come for the Chaos Emerald. It's too powerful to be left alone, too tempting for anyone to resist. That's why I devised this little competition. To give them all a chance to prove themselves."
Merga's expression darkened. "And what about the energy waves you're using to manipulate the competitors?"
Zao chuckled softly, not at all bothered by the accusation. "Ah, yes. That's a little something I cooked up from examining the data found in Brevon's war machines. It's the same technology I used to turn King Dail into my pawn."
At the mention of Brevon, Merga's eyes flashed with anger. She couldn't stop her mind from drifting to the rumors she had heard—rumors that Brevon had tortured Lilac during his twisted reign. The idea that the young Water Dragon would have woken up to find herself the literal last of her kind haunted Merga more than she cared to admit. Brevon had almost succeeded in wiping out her people entirely, and Lilac had been his target. The thought made her blood boil, but she quickly suppressed the rising fury.
Zao continued, unfazed by her silence. "But instead of forcing loyalty or control, all I'm doing is heightening their need for love. Any actions the competitors take must stem from feelings that already exist. I'm not creating anything new, just... enhancing what's already there."
Merga frowned but ultimately relented, her gaze lingering on the screens. She didn't care much for what happened to the others, but two individuals weighed heavily on her mind—Lilac and Surge.
Lilac, because she could see how well the Water Dragon and the blue hedgehog were meshing together, despite knowing it likely started off as nothing more than an act. The bond between them was growing, and though Merga would never admit it aloud, she worried for Lilac. The girl had already been through enough.
And then there was Surge. Merga could see the signs. Surge was damaged goods, mentally scarred in ways most wouldn't catch—but Merga recognized it immediately in the way the Tenrec carried herself. The anger, the recklessness... Surge was hiding more than just rebellious impulses. She was broken inside, and Merga wasn't sure how much more pressure she could take before she shattered
With a small sigh, Merga hoped that Quill would be enough to keep Surge grounded, or at the very least, stop her from killing Zao when all of this was over. It was clear to Merga that Surge needed help, even if no one else saw it yet.
Omochao's cheerful voice rang out across the arena once again, capturing the attention of the crowd and competitors alike. "Welcome back, everyone! It's time for the first event of the competition—a thrilling Relay Race around the arena!"
The screen lit up, showing the track that circled the arena, filled with an assortment of vicious-looking traps and hostile robots that patrolled certain areas of the course. The audience murmured excitedly as they took in the sight, and a few of the competitors exchanged uncertain glances.
Omochao continued the explanation. "In this race, the guys will start by doing two laps around the track, dodging obstacles and avoiding the robots. Once the guys finish their laps, the ladies will take over and complete two laps of their own! And finally, for the fifth and final lap... the guys must princess-carry their partners to the finish line!"
The crowd cheered at the over-the-top nature of the event, but down on the field, Sonic, Quill, and Spade exchanged a look. A look that clearly said, "This is already too much."
Spade crossed his arms, standing at the starting line as he looked at his competitors. "I'd say, 'May the best man win,' but this is already way out of my comfort zone," he muttered, his usual cool demeanor slightly cracked by the ridiculousness of the task ahead.
Quill, standing next to him, let out a light chuckle. "You're not wrong, Spade. Carrying a princess, huh? Not exactly what I signed up for."
Sonic, ever the optimist, grinned and stretched his legs. "Hey, come on! At least it's gonna be exciting. Nothing wrong with a bit of a challenge, right?"
Despite their shared unease, all three got ready to race, their minds focused on the task ahead. The other competitors also took their places, readying themselves for the chaos that was about to unfold. The arena was buzzing with excitement as the countdown began.
"Three… two… one… GO!" Omochao's voice boomed across the arena, and the race was on.
The moment the signal was given, Sonic, Quill, Spade, and the others took off in a blur of motion. Sonic, of course, wasted no time, using his legendary speed to shoot ahead of the pack. The crowd roared as he raced down the track, his eyes already scanning for the obstacles that lay ahead.
"Alright, let's see what this track has got," Sonic muttered to himself as he approached the first set of traps. The ground ahead lit up with fire traps, flames erupting from hidden vents in the track.
Without missing a beat, Sonic leaped high into the air, his spin dash easily carrying him over the flames. He landed gracefully, feet barely touching the ground before he sped forward again. Behind him, he could hear the sounds of chaos as some of the other competitors struggled to avoid the flames.
Meanwhile, Quill wasn't far behind. His sharp reflexes and experience in the field helped him dodge the first wave of fire traps, though the heat was definitely a challenge. "This isn't too bad," he thought, but just as he was about to relax, a pair of flying robots descended from above, their claws ready to strike.
"Not happening!" Quill growled, ducking under the swipe of one of the robots. He rolled across the ground, his quills slicing through the air as he shot back up onto his feet. The second robot lunged, but Quill was quicker. He whipped around, launching one of his sharp quills at the robot's circuitry, causing it to explode in a burst of sparks.
"Phew," Quill muttered, a bit of sweat forming on his brow as he regained his focus. He couldn't afford to slow down, not with Sonic in the lead.
Spade, on the other hand, was navigating the course with a calm yet calculating approach. He wasn't the fastest, but his tactical mind made up for it. As he approached the first set of traps, he took a moment to observe how they triggered. Flames erupted in a rhythm, and Spade waited for the perfect moment before dashing through them, his movements precise and deliberate.
The robots weren't a huge problem for him either, as he had dealt with worse in his mercenary days. One swooped in close, but Spade sidestepped the attack with ease, delivering a swift kick that sent the robot crashing into the track. Still, this wasn't a comfortable environment for him. He wasn't used to competing like this.
"This is ridiculous," Spade muttered, though he kept pushing forward. As much as he hated the idea of carrying someone like a princess, he wasn't about to lose.
Up ahead, Sonic was already nearing the end of his first lap. He darted past another fire trap, barely noticing the heat as he focused on keeping his lead. Just as he thought things were going smoothly, a set of spiked barriers shot up from the ground.
"Now we're talking!" Sonic smirked as he skidded to a halt, just inches from the deadly spikes. Timing his moves perfectly, he spun through a small gap between the barriers, making it look effortless. The crowd went wild, cheering on the blue hedgehog as he finished his first lap.
Quill was hot on his heels, though the obstacles were starting to take their toll. He dodged another flying robot, his breath coming in heavier now as the heat from the fire traps began to wear him down. Still, he kept his pace, determined to catch up to Sonic. As he finished his first lap, he could see Sonic just ahead, his competitive spirit pushing him to keep going.
Spade finished his first lap in third place, his expression unreadable as he glanced at the course ahead. He had navigated the traps well so far, but he knew that the second lap would be just as challenging. The robots were relentless, and the fire traps seemed to grow hotter with each pass.
On the second lap, Sonic continued to dominate the course, his agility and speed keeping him ahead of the pack. He weaved through the fire traps with ease, and even the robots couldn't keep up with his rapid pace. Quill, though slightly behind, was determined not to let Sonic pull too far ahead. He narrowly dodged a set of spiked barriers, his eyes focused on the finish line.
Spade, though still in third, maintained his steady pace, knowing that the final lap would be the real challenge. As the second lap drew to a close, all three racers shared the same thought—this race was just getting started.
As the boys continued their race around the track, the girls waited on the sidelines, watching the events unfold. Both Surge and Lilac were standing together, clearly uneasy about the upcoming final lap. The thought of being carried like a princess was enough to make both of them cringe with embarrassment.
"I can't believe we have to be carried like this," Surge muttered, crossing her arms, her face already turning red at the mere thought. "This is the dumbest competition ever."
Lilac nodded in agreement, her cheeks flushed. "I know. I'm used to running on my own, not... this," she said, casting a glance at Sonic, who was making his way around the course with ease. The idea of him carrying her like some damsel made her heart race for all the wrong reasons.
Mystic, standing nearby, seemed less concerned with the competition and more curious about her competitors. "Honestly, I'm not sure I even want to be carried," she said nonchalantly. "It seems a bit... much."
Before anyone could respond, Mystic's sharp eyes caught something. She leaned closer to Surge, a smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth. "By the way, Surge... your lips look a little swollen. So, tell me—how's Quill? Is he a good kisser?"
Surge's entire face turned beet red, her hands flying up to cover her mouth. "W-What?!" she stammered, her voice rising an octave as she felt like dying from embarrassment. "Shut up, Mystic!"
Lilac, sensing Surge's distress, quickly stepped in. "Mystic, don't tease her like that," she scolded lightly, though there was a hint of a smile on her lips.
Mystic, not one to back down easily, simply shrugged. "Hey, I'm just curious," she said before turning to Lilac, her smirk only growing wider. "So, has Sonic kissed you yet?"
Lilac's face instantly flushed a deep red, her heart skipping a beat. She hadn't kissed Sonic—at least, not yet—but she'd be lying if she said she hadn't been thinking about it. She opened her mouth to respond but faltered, embarrassed by how flustered the question had made her.
Mystic chuckled, clearly enjoying the reactions she was getting. "I see," she said, her eyes glinting mischievously. "You've been thinking about it, haven't you?"
Lilac bit her lip, unable to meet Mystic's gaze as she mumbled, "That's not... that's not the point."
Mystic waved her hand dismissively, still grinning. "Relax, I get it. For the record, I've never kissed a boy either," she said casually, causing both Lilac and Surge to blink in surprise. "But I'm willing to give Spade a try if he'd drop that 'too cool for emotions' act."
Surge, still mortified from the earlier comment, gave Mystic a disbelieving look. "You can't be serious..."
Mystic simply smiled, clearly enjoying herself. "Oh, I'm serious. If he's good enough to carry me around, he might as well live up to it."
