Worlds Collide: Triple Trouble
Big Trouble in Shang Mu Part 6
The day's events were finally winding down, and all the competitors were heading back to their rooms to rest. However, Lilac was still too mortified to move. She stood frozen in place, her cheeks flushed red from the princess carry spectacle earlier. Sonic, noticing her hesitation, smiled and walked up beside her.
"Hey, come on. Let's get you back to the room," he said with a soft chuckle, offering his hand.
Lilac sighed but let him lead the way, her embarrassment still weighing heavily on her. Once they reached their room, Sonic did his best to cheer her up. "You know," he began, "you really nailed your part of the race today. Those obstacles didn't stand a chance against you."
Lilac couldn't help but smile. She knew Sonic was trying his best to make her feel better, and she appreciated it. "Thanks, Sonic. You were pretty amazing yourself out there," she said, her voice soft but genuine.
Sonic grinned at the compliment, and for a moment, they locked eyes. Time seemed to stand still as they stared into each other's gaze, lost in the warmth and connection they shared. It felt like they were about to lean in and kiss when—
A sudden knock at the door shattered the moment, jolting both of them out of their daze.
Sonic quickly straightened up, his cheeks slightly flushed. "Uh, I'll get it," he stuttered, taking a quick step toward the door.
Lilac nodded, mumbling, "Sure," as she tried to compose herself.
When Sonic opened the door, he was greeted by none other than Merga, standing in the hallway with a serious look on her face. "I'm here to see Lilac," she said, her voice calm but firm.
Sonic instinctively dropped into a fighting stance the moment he saw Merga at the door. His eyes narrowed in suspicion, but Merga raised one of her claws in a non-threatening gesture.
"I'm not here to fight," she said, her voice calm. "I came for some... girl talk."
Sonic blinked, completely caught off guard by the unexpected statement. "Girl talk?" he echoed, unsure of how to even respond.
Lilac, sensing the tension, quickly stepped forward. "It's okay, Sonic," she said softly. "I'll be back, I promise."
She offered him a smile so warm and genuine that it made Sonic blush. He rubbed the back of his neck, looking away for a moment. "Alright... if you're sure," he mumbled, still a bit flustered.
Lilac nodded and followed Merga out into the hallway. As they walked down the hall, Lilac glanced over at her companion. "So, where are we going?"
Merga kept her eyes forward as she answered, "To fetch Surge."
A few minutes later, they arrived at Quill and Surge's room. Merga knocked on the door, and it opened to reveal a slightly disheveled Surge, her hair tousled and her expression one of clear irritation.
"What do you want?" Surge demanded, glaring at them.
Without missing a beat, Merga grabbed Surge by the arm. "We're borrowing you," she said with authority, turning her head to yell into the room, "Quill! I'm taking Surge for a bit!"
From inside the room, Quill stuttered out something unintelligible, clearly caught off guard, but before he could finish his sentence, Merga had already dragged Surge down the hall, with Lilac following closely behind.
A short jaunt later, Merga stopped in a quiet area and sat Surge down on a bench. "Sit," she commanded, motioning for Lilac to take a seat as well.
Lilac complied, a bit confused. "What's this about, Merga?" she asked.
Merga took a deep breath, her expression serious. "There's something I need to tell you both but first…"
Merga had sat across from Lilac and Surge, her expression serious. She leaned forward slightly, her gaze shifting between the two girls. "I need you both to be honest with me," she began, her tone gentle but firm. "Do you... have feelings for Sonic and Quill, respectively?"
Surge immediately blushed and looked away, crossing her arms defensively. Lilac, on the other hand, blushed just as deeply but lowered her gaze to the ground, unable to meet Merga's eyes.
"I'm not teasing you," Merga continued, sensing their discomfort. "What I have to say is important."
Surge, ever the rebel, glanced back at Merga with suspicion. "Is this some kind of... birds and the bees talk?" she asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Merga's face flushed at the suggestion, and she quickly shook her head. "No, absolutely not," she replied, a bit flustered. "I may be old, but I'm definitely not the mothering type."
Surge raised an eyebrow, mildly surprised by the reaction, but said nothing more.
Merga took a deep breath and continued. "What I'm talking about is what Mayor Zao has been doing. He's been influencing the emotions of the competitors... amplifying the feelings of attraction you already had toward your partners."
Both girls fell silent as Merga's words sank in, the realization hitting them hard. The strange moments and unexpected emotions they had experienced now made sense.
Surge was the first to react, her face twisting in anger as she clenched her fists. "That... manipulative creep," she growled. "He's been messing with my head?"
Just as Surge was about to rise to her feet, Merga reached out, stopping her. "Before you react, think about this—are you going to stop enjoying the feelings you have for Quill?"
Surge froze, her anger suddenly giving way to confusion. She hadn't expected that question. She didn't want to admit it out loud, but Quill got her. More than anyone else ever had. And as much as she hated the idea of being manipulated, the truth was... Quill was a damn good kisser, and she liked being around him. That fact left her stunned and quiet.
Lilac, meanwhile, was grappling with her own thoughts. She knew she had been developing feelings for Sonic for a while now, but the idea that those emotions were being forcefully amplified felt... wrong. But at the same time, she couldn't deny that she didn't want to give up what was growing between her and Sonic. The conflict left her equally confused, her heart heavy with the uncertainty of it all.
Merga's expression softened as she looked at both Lilac and Surge. "I understand what you're feeling," she said gently. "I'd hate it if my own feelings for my beloved were manipulated too."
Lilac blinked, her mind suddenly flashing back to what she had learned about Merga's past. The Water Dragon had loved once— an Earth Dragon princess named Cordelia. Lilac had never forgotten that small detail, and it made Merga's words hit even harder.
Merga continued, her voice firm but kind. "If you want to keep going in this competition, you need to understand that your feelings will only grow stronger. But if either of you wants to back out, I'll rip the Chaos Emerald out of Zao's vault myself, consequences be damned. I'll become a criminal if I have to."
Surge, still processing everything, frowned in confusion. "I get why you'd do that for the dragon girl," she muttered, motioning toward Lilac. "But why me? What do you care if I get manipulated?"
Merga smirked slightly, a rare softness crossing her sharp features. "Because, despite your rough edges, Kitsunami constantly sings your praises. He's genuinely concerned about you. That kid's grown on me... like the child I could never have."
Both Lilac and Surge went silent, the weight of Merga's words sinking in. Surge's usual rebellious demeanor faltered, and Lilac found herself unexpectedly touched by Merga's admission. They both sat in quiet contemplation for a few moments, processing everything.
Finally, Lilac spoke, her voice steady. "Surge."
Surge turned toward Lilac, giving her a raised eyebrow. "What?"
Lilac gave her a determined look. "I'll hold down Zao, and you pummel his face in."
For a moment, Surge just stared at her, and then, slowly, a smirk crept across her face. "Heh. Sounds like a deal."
Merga's gaze shifted between them, her usual stoicism replaced by a hint of pride. "So... are you both staying in the competition?"
Lilac and Surge nodded in unison.
Lilac then hesitated before suggesting, "We should tell the boys. They deserve to know what's going on."
Surge's smirk faded into a more serious expression, her confidence wavering slightly. "I'm not so sure about that. But... yeah, I guess we should."
Both Lilac and Surge stood up, exchanging a final glance with Merga before heading back to their respective rooms. The air between them was lighter, the weight of their earlier confusion and anger slowly lifting. As their footsteps faded down the hall, Merga was left alone, her gaze drifting thoughtfully.
Suddenly, a voice from the shadows broke the silence. "That was a nice gesture you did for them."
Merga's eyes narrowed as she turned toward the source of the voice, only to see a familiar figure step into the dim light—Mystic. But instead of her usual magician's garb, she was dressed in a simple tee shirt, one that clearly belonged to Spade.
Merga raised an eyebrow at the sight, her curiosity piqued. "Is that…"
The orange-furred Mobian shrugged nonchalantly, noticing the way Merga was eyeing her outfit. "What can I say? Spade finally broke his 'too cool' facade." She grinned, her tail swinging merrily behind her as she spoke, clearly enjoying the moment.
Merga's expression softened ever so slightly, though her eyebrow remained arched. "I see."
Mystic stretched lazily before turning to leave. "Anyway, I'll let you get back to your brooding. See you around~."
With that, Mystic disappeared back into her room, leaving Merga alone in the quiet hall once again. Merga's tail drooped. "I do not brood." She huffed before leaving the area.
Surge made her way back to her and Quill's room, her steps a little slower than usual, her mind still reeling from everything Merga had told her and Lilac. As soon as she walked in, Quill noticed something was off. She seemed unusually quiet, her usual fiery attitude dulled.
"What's wrong?" Quill asked, his voice gentle as he stood up and walked over to her.
Surge hesitated, her eyes shifting to the floor as she crossed her arms. She wasn't used to feeling this vulnerable. Finally, after a deep breath, she spoke. "Merga told Lilac and me something… something that's messing with my head."
Quill frowned, sensing her distress. "What did she say?"
Surge looked up, her expression a mix of anger and uncertainty. "Zao's been messing with our emotions, amplifying our feelings for you guys... making them stronger. And now I don't know if what I feel is real or if it's just… him messing with my head."
Quill watched her carefully, seeing the frustration and confusion etched on her face. Without a word, he stepped forward, cupped her face gently in his hands, and kissed her.
Surge's eyes widened in shock, her body stiffening for a moment before she instinctively relaxed into the kiss. The heat, the passion—it all felt so real, so intense. She couldn't deny how much she enjoyed it as she returned the kiss, letting herself get lost in the moment.
When Quill finally broke the kiss, he looked into her eyes, his gaze steady and sincere. "None of that felt manufactured, Surge. Not a single part of it. You're stuck with me, whether you like it or not."
Surge blinked, still reeling from the kiss, but a smirk slowly crept onto her lips. "Oh, I'm stuck with you, huh? Then give me more before I make you pay for making me feel this way."
Quill chuckled softly. "It's not my fault, but hey, I'll take responsibility."
With that, he leaned in again, pressing his lips to hers, and this time, Surge didn't hesitate. She kissed him back with just as much fire, all her earlier doubts fading into the background.
Lilac returned to her room, her thoughts swirling from the conversation with Merga. She found Sonic inside, looking out the window, seemingly lost in thought. Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward, her voice soft but steady. "Sonic, can I ask you something?"
Sonic turned to face her, sensing the seriousness in her tone. He was about to ask what was on her mind, but something in her eyes told him this wasn't the time for his usual lightheartedness. "Yeah, sure. What's up?"
Lilac hesitated for a moment, then met his gaze. "Do you... have any real feelings for me?"
Sonic blinked, caught off guard by the question. He wasn't used to talking about his feelings—especially not like this. He opened his mouth to ask what this was all about but stopped. The way she looked at him... it made him realize she was completely serious.
Taking a deep breath, Sonic decided to be honest. "Yeah, I do. I've got serious feelings for you, Lilac. When I'm with you, I don't feel... contained."
Lilac tilted her head slightly. "Contained? What do you mean?"
Sonic let out a sigh, running a hand through his quills. "It's complicated. Amy's been chasing after me for a long time, declaring her love and talking about getting married. At first, I'll admit, I was flattered. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that settling down just... isn't me."
He paused, glancing away before continuing. "If I settled down, I'd become a target. Everyone around me would become a target. And deep down, I know Amy doesn't want this life. She wants to be a mom, not running around saving the world. That's not what I want... or what she needs."
Lilac listened closely, her heart pounding as Sonic's words hit her.
Sonic's eyes softened as he looked back at her. "But these past few days with you, Lilac... it's different. It opened my heart to something new. You're like water, and I'm the wind. We flow together, naturally."
Tears welled up in Lilac's eyes, and without thinking, she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. Sonic held her close, his heart racing. For the first time, he didn't feel like running away from these feelings.
After a few moments, Sonic gently pulled back, his brow furrowed in concern. "Why did you ask me that? Is something going on?"
Lilac took a deep breath and explained what Merga had told her about Zao, how the mayor had been manipulating the emotions of the competitors, amplifying their feelings for one another. "I just wanted to make sure what I feel... what we feel, is real and returned."
Sonic's expression darkened with anger for a moment, but he quickly pushed it aside. "There'll be time to deal with that later," he muttered.
Gently lifting her chin, Sonic looked into her eyes before leaning down and pressing his lips to hers in a soft but full kiss. Lilac's breath hitched in surprise, but she quickly melted into it, returning the kiss with equal emotion. To them both, it felt magical, like something had clicked into place.
Sonic slowly broke the kiss, resting his forehead against hers with a soft smile. "Let's see what this road has to offer... for both of us."
Lilac smiled through her tears, nodding in agreement. "Yeah... let's."
Neera's eyes widened suddenly, a look of realization crossing her face. "It's not Eggman," she said firmly. "It's Mayor Zao. Think about it—what did you both see during the tournament, especially during the first competition?"
Fark, who had been traveling at the time, shook his head. "I didn't see any of it."
Amy, still piecing things together, nodded in agreement. "The couples relay... It was strange. Lilac, Surge, and the other female competitors—they weren't acting like themselves. It was like they were... compelled to act more affectionate."
Fark's expression darkened as he processed the information. "Sounds like it's probably a low-resonance wave set to a single directive—amplifying emotions like attraction. It's influencing everyone, especially the women."
Amy frowned. "But that doesn't explain Jewel's headaches."
Fark turned toward her, his tone more thoughtful. "Insects think of romance differently than other species. It's not that love doesn't exist—it's just not a priority for them the way it is for others. Jewel's headaches are probably her body resisting the wave's effects, trying to reconcile her natural instincts with the influence of the waves."
Neera's expression hardened. "We need to destroy that machine before it's too late."
Fark nodded but raised a hand. "I'll get on it, but security will be tight. Not to mention, if we make a direct move against Zao, he could turn on our allies. I'll need to be careful."
Amy and Neera both nodded, understanding the delicate nature of the situation. "Do what you can, Fark," Amy said, her voice steady.
The transmission ended, leaving Fark standing alone in the Resistance hub. He sighed heavily, feeling the weight of the situation on his shoulders.
As he turned to leave, his instincts flared. Electricity crackled from his fingertips as he raised his hand, pointing his index and middle fingers toward the shadows. "Whoever's skulking in the shadows, come out now, or I'll fry you."
The sound of shuffling filled the room, and Fark's eyes narrowed as figures emerged from the darkness. Recognition flickered across his face as he tightened his stance.
"It's you," he said, his voice low and dangerous.
