Worlds Collide: Triple Trouble

Big Trouble in Shang Mu Part 7

The next day brought a somber mood to the arena. Attendance for the next event had plummeted by at least sixty percent, and more shocking still, eight out of the twelve teams had dropped out of the tournament. The reason was simple: they no longer cared about the grand prize. Instead, they were all too eager to get married, swept up in the overwhelming emotions that had been manipulated by Zao's waves.

Lilac, Surge, Quill, Sonic, and, surprisingly, Spade and Mystic, sat together in the now sparsely populated competitor lounge, their moods heavy. They all knew the truth now—what they felt for each other had been manipulated, amplified beyond their control. It left a sour taste in their mouths.

Mystic had only confided the truth to Spade—he was her partner, after all. But what she had told him made his blood boil. The revelation that Zao had been using Brevon's twisted technology, the same tech responsible for so much suffering, was unforgivable. Spade leaned back in his chair, fists clenched tightly, his jaw set in anger.

"Zao... that damn coward," Spade growled under his breath, his voice shaking with fury. "He knew what Brevon did to Dail. He saw the fallout. And he still used that tech like it was nothing."

His voice rose, bitter anger dripping from every word. "How could he justify this? Manipulating us, toying with our emotions like we're nothing more than pieces on his chessboard? Does he even care about the lives he's screwing with?"

Mystic, sitting beside him, didn't interrupt, her tail gently swaying as she thought about everything. She hadn't expected to feel so... human. Being with Spade had given her a taste of something she hadn't known she was missing.

Spade exhaled sharply, trying to calm the anger simmering beneath the surface. He was furious, and with good reason. Zao had crossed a line that should never have been approached, much less crossed.

The air around them was thick with unspoken tension. Even though they knew the truth, their complicated feelings still lingered.

Surge finally snapped, electricity crackling off her fur as she leapt to her feet. "That's it! I'm frying Zao and taking the damn Chaos Emerald!" she shouted, her voice filled with raw anger.

Quill, seeing her distress, quickly placed a calming hand on her shoulder. "I get it, Surge. I really do," he said, his tone firm but understanding. "But we can't just attack a city leader like that. We need a plan."

Lilac grumbled in frustration, crossing her arms. "We should at least kick his butt for what he's done. He's manipulated all of us." Her anger flared for a moment, but Sonic pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her. The warmth of his embrace soothed her frustration, calming her down.

Merga entered the lounge just then, with Kit in tow. As soon as Kit saw Surge, he rushed over, wrapping his small arms around her in a tight hug. To everyone's surprise, Surge didn't push him away. Sonic, watching the exchange, raised an eyebrow but kept his thoughts to himself.

"Guess what," Merga said with a grim expression. "The last team dropped out. Zao's tournament is falling apart."

Spade, still seething with anger, glanced up. "So, what do we do now?"

Merga folded her arms, her eyes narrowing. "We take down the machine causing the waves. Zao's trying to do major damage control right now, so he'll be distracted. It's the perfect time to strike."

Mystic, who had been silent until now, shook her head. "Count me and Spade out."

The room went silent, and the others turned to look at her, confused.

Mystic shrugged, her tail swaying lazily. "If we all go after the machine, Zao will know something's up. Besides, I'm athletic, but I'm definitely not the frontline fighter type."

Sonic, who had been watching Mystic carefully for the last few minutes, suddenly furrowed his brow in realization. Something about her outfit had been nagging at him, and finally, it clicked.

"Wait a minute," Sonic said, his voice filled with surprise. "You're... Heavy Magician!"

Lilac, Quill, and Merga looked at Sonic in confusion, but Surge's eyes widened. "Heavy Magician? No way. Heavy Magician was an Egg Robo, not... this."

Mystic's lips curled into a mischievous smile as she let out a playful, "Ara ara." She twirled her fingers in the air, her mysterious aura intensifying. "Well, well, it looks like my little ruse has been found out."

Spade huffed in mild annoyance, crossing his arms. "You could've at least worn something different than your usual outfit."

Mystic turned her head slightly, her smile only widening. "Like your shirt?" she teased, making both Lilac and Surge blush at the implications.

Turning back to Sonic, Mystic's tone softened, though her smile remained. "Lord Eggman has... improved his tech, Sonic. I'm still the same, but this new form? I've never felt so alive. I enjoy looking and feeling like this." She paused, her expression thoughtful. "Would you begrudge me this freedom?"

Sonic sighed, his blue eyes softening as he looked at her. "No, I get it. Honestly, I'm glad that something of Mr. Tinkerer is still in Eggman somewhere. Whatever made him give you this, that kindness had to come from him."

Mystic didn't respond to Sonic's comment about Mr. Tinkerer. She knew exactly who that was—everyone in the Eggman Empire did. It was taboo for anyone to mention that name, and no one dared to bring it up in conversation. Instead, she turned to Spade, her expression unreadable.

"We should go," she said quietly. "This entire plan has fallen to pieces. Let them take the Chaos Emerald."

Spade turned to her, his eyes wide with shock. "What?" He was about to question her when realization hit him. Mystic's eyes said it all—the Chaos Emerald wasn't their prize. Spade's shoulders relaxed slightly as he let out a huff. "Fine. We're out."

Mystic gave a subtle nod, turning back to the others. "Good luck," she said with a small, cryptic smile. "Next time, we might be something... different."

Before anyone could respond, a giant card appeared behind Spade and Mystic. It hovered in the air for a brief moment before flipping over with a dazzling swirl of colors. In an instant, both Spade and Mystic disappeared, the card fading away into thin air.

Sonic groaned, running a hand through his quills. "I should've caught that," he muttered, annoyed with himself.

Quill, still looking confused, turned to Sonic. "Who exactly is Heavy Magician? I know a lot of Eggman's bots, but I've never heard of her."

Sonic crossed his arms, his expression growing serious. "It's a long story. Because of the Phantom Ruby, five of Eggman's Egg Robos transformed and gained sentience. They became the Hard Boiled Heavies—Heavy Gunner, Heavy Rider, Heavy Shinobi, Heavy Magician, and their leader, Heavy King."

Lilac frowned. "Are they strong?"

Sonic nodded. "Yeah, the first four are tough but they can be beaten relatively easily. But Heavy King? He's on par with Metal Sonic, so he's a tough fight by himself."

Merga brought the conversation back to the important task at hand. "We need to focus on taking down the machine that's generating the waves. If we don't—"

A voice, familiar to both Merga and Lilac, cut in smoothly. "No need to worry about that."

Merga and Lilac turned sharply, both recognizing the tone immediately. Standing there with a confident smirk on her face was none other than Corazon Tea. She offered a polite nod, her eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief. "Lady Merga, Lilac... it's been a while."

Lilac blinked, clearly surprised. "Corazon? What are you doing here?"

Corazon crossed her arms casually, tilting her head. "My new team leader sent me. I'm here to get you all out of here."

Sonic, who had been silent until now, stepped forward. "And what about the Chaos Emerald?" he asked, his tone wary.

Corazon's smirk widened as she raised a finger. "Ah, I was told you'd ask that. My team leader left me with a very specific message for you."

Sonic's eyes narrowed as Corazon delivered the message, verbatim. "He said, 'I'll get that damn Chaos Emerald myself later, faker. Just do what Corazon says and get moving.'"

Sonic groaned, grumbling to himself as the realization hit him. "Of course it's him..."

Lilac, Quill, and Merga exchanged confused glances, not understanding the context. But Surge and Kit? They were chuckling, finding the situation amusing.

Surge shot Sonic a teasing grin. "He sure told you, huh, Sonic?"

Sonic rolled his eyes, mumbling something under his breath. "Yeah, yeah..."

Corazon, clearly enjoying the moment, motioned for the group to follow her. "Come on, you heard the message. Let's get moving."

With no other choice, the group followed Corazon out, Sonic still muttering about his eternal rival.

In a dimly lit, underground area beneath Shang Mu, Mayor Zao frantically fiddled with the control panel of his machine. Sweat poured down his face as he panicked, realizing the machine was pumping out more waves than he had ever anticipated. He had thought he could control it—use it to solidify his power and keep the people in line. But now, the situation was spiraling out of control. If he didn't shut it down soon, losing his position of power would be the least of his worries.

"Come on, come on..." Zao muttered, his fingers shaking as he desperately pressed buttons, trying to get the machine to stop. But nothing worked. The lights on the machine flickered ominously, and the hum of energy grew louder.

Suddenly, the sound of slow clapping echoed through the chamber.

Zao froze, turning his head sharply toward the noise. Out of the shadows stepped a figure—a gangster-looking opossum with a smug grin on his face, accompanied by several intimidating-looking people at his side. Zao's heart raced.

"Who are you?" Zao demanded, his voice quivering with fear.

The opossum stepped forward, his grin widening. "The name's Clutch," he said casually. "And I'm here to save the day."

Before Zao could react, Clutch motioned with a flick of his wrist, and two Red Scarf ninjas appeared from the shadows. In a flash, they grabbed Zao, restraining him. Zao struggled against their grip, but it was no use.

"Let go of me! I'm the Mayor of Shang Mu!" Zao cried out in desperation, but Clutch just chuckled, shaking his head.

"What a shame," Clutch said, his voice dripping with mockery. "The honorable Mayor of Shang Mu, doing something so horrible to his people. What will they think when they find out?" He smirked, stepping closer to Zao. "But don't worry... they'll be glad to have me at the helm once this machine is taken care of."

Zao's eyes widened in horror as Clutch turned to look behind him. "Rough! Tumble! Take care of the machine."

Out from the shadows strutted Rough and Tumble, the notorious skunk brothers, with matching grins on their faces. Without hesitation, they moved toward the machine and began dismantling it with surprising precision.

Zao could only watch in terror as the machine he had relied on was torn apart piece by piece. His last attempt to maintain control over the city was crumbling before his eyes.

Turning back to Clutch, Zao's voice cracked with desperation. "What... what do you want?"

Clutch chuckled darkly, leaning down to meet Zao's eyes. "Oh, don't worry. By tonight... I'll have exactly what I want."

Zao's blood ran cold as Clutch straightened up, the opossum's grin never fading.

Sonic, Quill, Lilac, Surge, Kit, and Merga followed Corazon back to the basement base. As they entered, they were met with the stoic faces of Shadow, Rouge, Omega, and Fark. The atmosphere in the room grew tense as Shadow's eyes narrowed, lingering briefly on Surge, Kit, and Quill. But, as always, he remained silent, keeping his thoughts to himself.

Sonic, sensing the tension immediately, broke the silence. "Okay, what's going on here?"

Fark stepped forward, motioning to a monitor on the far wall. "The signal from Zao's machine has stopped," he began, "but that's not the reason we pulled you all out."

Everyone's attention turned to the screen. Displayed on the monitor was a large fleet of airships, slowly advancing toward Shang Mu.

"That's... Eggman's fleet?" Lilac asked, her voice tinged with uncertainty and concern.

Fark nodded grimly. "It looks like Eggman's tired of waiting for the tournament to end. He's making his move now."

Quill growled in frustration, his fists clenching as he started toward the exit. "Then we don't have time. I'll—"

Before he could finish, Surge grabbed his arm, stopping him. "I get it," she said, her voice low but firm. "But as much as I hate relying on blue boy and his friends, they've got a plan. So don't go rushing off... at least not without me."

Quill hesitated, then slowly nodded, realizing she was right. "Yeah. You're right," he said, calming down.

He turned back to the others, focusing on Fark and the Resistance. "Do you have a plan?" he asked, his voice carrying an edge of urgency.

Rouge stepped forward, arms crossed. "We've got two priorities now. First, we need to prepare for Eggman's siege. The city's defenses are in shambles thanks to the aftereffects of Zao's waves. People are disoriented, vulnerable."

Fark picked up where she left off. "The second priority is finding Zao. As much as we all want to knock him senseless, he's still the Mayor of Shang Mu. We need to question him—find out where he got that tech. And fast."

Merga crossed her arms, her gaze sharp. "I'll stay here and help coordinate the defenses from the base."

Lilac looked at Merga, surprised. "You will?"

Merga gave her a small nod. "I've done a lot of soul-searching, Lilac. While I haven't forgiven the Earth Dragons for what they did to our people, I can't let it fester inside me anymore. This is bigger than me now." Shadow listened to her words and nodded silently to them. He understood where she was coming from heavily. He'd make it a point to talk with her soon.

The room was quiet for a moment until Quill suddenly spoke up. "I'll go after Zao."

His declaration caught the group off guard. Sonic raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that?"

Quill nodded firmly. "If I go after Eggman right now... I'll kill him. He's the one who shattered the Cosmic Beryl. He's the reason for all of this." His fists clenched at the thought of Eggman's betrayal. "But that's not our immediate issue."

Quill's words hung in the air, filled with conviction. "Zao must pay for what he's done to Surge, Lilac, and the people of Shang Mu. I won't harm him, but I'll make sure justice is served."

Surge gave a toothy smirk, crossing her arms. "Now that's a plan I can get behind."

She then turned to Kit, her expression softening slightly. "Kit, I need you to stay here."

Kit's eyes widened in surprise. "What? No, I'm coming with you," he protested.

Surge shook her head, kneeling down to his level. "Look, I need someone I can trust in mission control to watch our backs. And... I trust you."

Kit's face flushed red at the compliment, not used to Surge's rare displays of kindness. "You've... never been this nice before."

Surge shrugged, standing back up. "Don't get used to it, kid," she teased. "I've still got plans to beat Sonic one day, but it's not a priority right now. I've got you, Quill, and..." she paused, casting a playful glance at Merga, "Mama Merga to look after."

Merga huffed indignantly, folding her arms. "Don't call me that," she grumbled, but her tone lacked any real bite.

Quill, ever the quiet observer, smirked and added, "Well, you do worry about Surge and Lilac a lot... like a mother would."

Lilac, unable to resist, chimed in with a grin. "She used to call me 'hatchling,' you know."

Merga's cheeks flushed slightly, though she quickly cleared her throat and turned away. "Enough of this! You have your missions, and I expect you to carry them out. Now get moving!"

Taking control of the situation, Merga began pointing out the teams. "You," she said, motioning toward Fark, Quill, Corazon, and Rouge, "go find Zao. We need to know where he got that tech."

She then turned to the others. "The rest of you—besides Kit—go after Eggman. We don't have much time."

Before anyone could object to Merga giving orders, Omega stepped forward, his booming robotic voice filling the room. "MISSION ACCEPTED. I WILL ELIMINATE ALL OF EGGMAN'S CREATIONS."

The group exchanged glances, realizing there wasn't time to argue. Shrugging, they each nodded and began setting off to their assigned tasks. There was no time to waste—Shang Mu's fate, hung in the balance.
