Worlds Collide: Triple Trouble
This will be the last chapter I have before I move back to other projects. The story isn't over, but I will be working to come up with new storylines and plots for this project. For now, though, i must wander back to my two MHA stories.
New Egg Empire
During The Events of [Big Trouble In Shang Mu Part 6]
That night, in the dimly lit control room of his airship, Sage appeared before her father, Eggman, her expression brimming with happiness. Eggman, seated comfortably in his command chair, glanced at her, intrigued by her unusually cheerful demeanor.
"Well now, what's got you so happy, Sage?" he asked, leaning forward with curiosity.
Sage's smile faltered for a moment, replaced by a more serious expression. "Father, I've found the source of the signal we've been tracking," she said, but there was an underlying tone of urgency in her voice.
Eggman raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "The source of the signal, eh? Excellent. And how exactly did you manage to track it down?"
Sage hesitated, her voice quieter now. "I pushed myself to solve this because... I felt like I had failed you." Her eyes dimmed slightly, and her expression softened. "I couldn't perform my duties as I should have, and that's why I pressed ahead. I needed to make sure I could fix the situation."
Eggman's smirk faded briefly, his expression softening. For a moment, his tone was almost fatherly. "Sage, you've never failed me. You are my greatest creation."
Sage's eyes glowed faintly at the words, the tension easing from her posture. "Thank you, Father. And with that motivation, I was able to locate the source."
She straightened up, regaining her pride. "The machine behind the signal was constructed using designs based on Brevon's technology. And with the data I ripped from Syntex, I was able to pinpoint and connect to the source."
Eggman leaned back in his chair and let out a booming belly laugh. "HAHAHA! Well done, Sage! I knew you'd get to the bottom of it. You've made me proud, as always."
Sage gave a small, pleased smile. "Thank you, Father."
Eggman's grin remained, but his eyes sharpened with interest. "Now, tell me—what exactly is the signal being used for?"
Sage's tone shifted slightly, taking on a more analytical edge. "The signal is designed to increase the desire of a lover within people, particularly women. It manipulates their emotional state, heightening romantic feelings and attraction."
Eggman raised both eyebrows, momentarily taken aback. "Romantic feelings, you say? What are the potential side effects of something like that?"
"At best, the side effects would include mental fatigue," Sage replied, her eyes glowing faintly as she analyzed the data. "Those affected could experience emotional exhaustion, confusion, or even headaches as their minds struggle to reconcile the manipulated emotions with their natural feelings."
Eggman leaned back, rubbing his chin thoughtfully, the wheels in his mind spinning. "Hmph. On one hand, as a feminist, I can't say I approve of such tactics," he commented with mock sincerity, sarcasm dripping from his words. "Manipulating women's emotions like that? Disgraceful."
He paused, then smirked, his fingers tapping together with excitement. "But on the other hand, I can't let such an opportunity slip past me. No, no—this is too valuable to ignore."
Eggman's eyes glinted with mischief as he turned to Sage. "Increase the power of the waves. Amplify them. Those who are already affected will become even more... disruptive. It'll hinder anyone who isn't under the influence. Chaos is an excellent weapon, and this signal could be the perfect tool to keep our enemies off balance."
Sage nodded immediately, her eyes glowing brighter in acknowledgment. "Understood, Father. I'll begin increasing the power of the waves."
Eggman chuckled darkly, his hands rubbing together in anticipation. "And while you're at it, send the coordinates of the machine to Clutch. He'll need to be ready when the time comes."
Sage's eyes glowed intensely as she set everything in motion, the energy radiating from her as the plan began to fall into place. She felt vindicated, knowing she had redeemed herself by uncovering the signal's source and ensuring their next move would be devastating.
The streets of Shang Mu, once bustling with life and activity, quickly descended into chaos as the signal's power surged. What had once been a subtle manipulation of emotions had now turned into an overwhelming force, warping the minds of those affected by the waves. The already disoriented citizens began to falter under the strain, their emotions spiraling out of control.
Couples who had previously been holding hands or exchanging smiles now found themselves overwhelmed by their emotions, unable to handle the powerful surge of romantic feelings. People began collapsing on the streets, clutching their heads in confusion and exhaustion. Some sat down on sidewalks, too mentally fatigued to stand, while others leaned against walls, trying to steady their breathing. The mental strain was becoming too much to bear.
A young couple walking near the center of town suddenly swayed as the signal's effects overwhelmed them. The girl stumbled into a street, her balance gone, while the boy barely caught her, his legs wobbling as if they could give out at any moment. They managed to pull each other to safety, but their expressions were dazed and confused, as though they couldn't even comprehend what had just happened.
Across the city, cars that had once moved along orderly streets began careening out of control. Drivers, their emotions clouded and senses dulled, lost focus on the road ahead. Two cars collided at an intersection, the screech of tires and the crash of metal filling the air. Thankfully, no one was gravely hurt, but the drivers stumbled out of their vehicles, visibly shaken and mentally drained.
Traffic quickly backed up as more cars swerved to avoid similar collisions, but the drivers themselves were barely able to process what was happening. Their minds were too fogged with the artificial emotions being pushed on them. People honked their horns in frustration, only adding to the disorientation and confusion that now filled the city streets.
Over at the city's fairgrounds, the situation was no different. Children and families who had been enjoying the rides and games suddenly found themselves swept up in the overwhelming tide of emotion. A group of teenagers stumbled away from a Ferris wheel, their eyes wide and unsteady as they clung to each other for balance. Several people collapsed in the grass near the game stalls, unable to cope with the overpowering sensations flooding their minds.
At the heart of the fairgrounds, a carousel slowed to a halt as its operator, clutching his head in confusion, struggled to stay conscious. Children wept as they clung to their parents, who themselves were fighting against the fatigue that threatened to knock them down.
Amid the chaos, soldiers were dispatched to the area, trying to assist the growing number of civilians who had fallen victim to the signal's effects. The military presence was a necessity, as the city's emergency services had already been stretched thin. The soldiers, though well-trained, were not immune to the influence of the waves. They staggered as they moved through the crowds, their discipline and training barely holding them together.
One soldier knelt beside a young woman who had collapsed near a food stand, but his own hands were shaking as he tried to help her up. His partner, standing nearby, was visibly disoriented, struggling to keep his footing as he waved other civilians toward safer areas.
The fairgrounds, usually a place of joy and laughter, had become a place of disarray, with people lying in heaps on the grass or wandering in a daze. The loudspeakers around the park crackled with announcements, but no one seemed to be paying attention, too lost in their own emotional turmoil.
The soldiers did their best to maintain order, but the situation was quickly spiraling out of control. Every step felt heavier, every command harder to give, as the amplified waves continued to wreak havoc across the city.
Present Time
Eggman leaned back in his command chair, his deep laughter echoing through the control room as he watched his forces descend into Shang Mu. The city below was a mix of chaos and resistance. He could see the soldiers of Shang Mu fighting valiantly, but his robotic forces were slowly overwhelming them, bit by bit. The streets were filled with the sound of clashing metal and the roar of his mechanized army advancing.
Eggman's eyes gleamed with satisfaction. It was time to address the city properly.
Grabbing a microphone from his console, he broadcasted his voice across the entire city, his tone dripping with mockery and bravado. "Greetings, citizens of Shang Mu! Allow me to introduce myself—Doctor Eggman, genius scientist and future ruler of this wonderful city!"
His laughter filled the airwaves as his voice boomed over loudspeakers and comms across the city. "In just a few moments, I'll be taking over as your new ruler. Oh, don't bother resisting—while it's amusing, it's also tedious. Fun, but tedious."
With a dramatic flourish, he dropped the microphone onto the console, his smirk widening as he watched the chaos unfold below. His Egg Carrier hovered high above the city, giving him the perfect vantage point to oversee his conquest.
Suddenly, one of his Red Scarf ninjas appeared on a screen to his left, bowing in respect. "Lord Eggman, we have a situation—code blue."
Eggman's grin faded instantly, and his expression twisted into a growl. "Cubot! Put it on the main screen, now!"
With a flurry of clicks and beeps, Cubot quickly transferred the feed to the main monitor. Eggman's eyes widened in frustration as the image came into view: Sonic, Lilac, and Omega were tearing through his forces with ease, dismantling his robots left and right.
"No, no, no!" Eggman shouted, slamming his fist onto the arm of his chair. "He's supposed to be weakened by the waves! This shouldn't be happening!"
Without hesitation, Eggman whipped around to his command console. "All units! Converge on Sonic's location immediately! I want that hedgehog stopped, NOW!"
As his orders echoed through the command room, Eggman turned his head to his right, his gaze falling on a male Bat Mobian wearing sleek, green shinobi gear. The bat stood silently, his arms crossed, but his posture was poised and ready.
Eggman's expression darkened, his voice low and commanding. "Kunai, go. Put an end to this."
Kunai smirked, giving Eggman a small bow. "It would be my honor, Lord Eggman." With a swift motion, Kunai vanished into the shadows, his presence dissipating as if he had never been there.
Eggman grinned, leaning back in his chair as he watched the feed of the battle below. "Let's see how you handle this, Sonic..."
Sonic, Lilac, and Omega were doing their best to take down Eggman's robots and the Red Scarves members, moving as a well-coordinated team despite the chaos around them. Sonic zipped through the battlefield, delivering swift kicks and punches, while Lilac's agility and powerful strikes knocked out enemy after enemy. Omega, with his heavy artillery, was blowing through Eggman's machines with explosive efficiency.
But there was one problem. "Omega! The Red Scarves are organic!" Sonic called out, dodging a blast from one of Eggman's drones. "You can't destroy them!"
Omega growled in frustration, his guns retracting momentarily. "THESE ORGANICS ARE TARGETS PLACED HERE BY EGGMAN TO HINDER OMEGA! THEY SHOULD BE ELIMINATED!"
Sonic ducked under a swipe from a Red Scarf ninja and kicked the robot beside him into a wall. "You might not be wrong about that, but you still can't blow them up!"
Lilac, dealing with a group of Red Scarves on her own, called out between breaths, "How did the Red Scarves even get in bed with Eggman? They're supposed to be independent!"
Sonic spun in place, knocking back two more enemies. "My guess? Same reason Casino Night and Shang Mu got mashed together. The Red Scarves' base probably showed up in Eggman's territory when the worlds merged. Might've been easier to work together."
Just as he finished speaking, Sonic launched a kick into the ribs of a Red Scarves member, only to witness something horrifying. The moment his foot connected, the ninja's body split apart, reforming instantly like a liquid.
Sonic's eyes widened in shock. "No way..."
The realization hit him like a brick. Eggman had done it again. He raised a hand to his ear, activating his comms. "Guys, listen up," he said urgently, his voice sharp. "Eggman's refined the Metal Virus. That's how he built his forces so fast. He's localized and found a way to control it!"
Lilac, still in the heat of battle, spared a glance over her shoulder. "Wait... you're saying the Red Scarves are infected?!"
Sonic dodged another attack, his face grim. "That's right. Every Red Scarf we've been fighting? They're all infected with the Metal Virus. Eggman's controlling them."
Omega, who had been readying another shot, growled with even more intensity. "TARGETS INFECTED. THEY MUST BE ELIMINATED."
"No, Omega! They're still organic underneath. We have to figure out another way!" Sonic shouted back, feeling the urgency of the situation grow.
In another part of the city, Shadow and Surge stood back-to-back, though they were far from allies. The streets around them were packed with a growing number of Red Scarves members, their numbers increasing by the minute. Shadow's eyes narrowed as he dispatched enemy after enemy with precise chaos-infused strikes. Despite their mutual distaste for one another, both he and Surge fought with dangerous efficiency, neither giving ground.
Shadow cursed under his breath, sidestepping a wild attack from a Red Scarves member. "This is too familiar," he muttered darkly. The nightmare of the Metal Virus still haunted him, and he refused to make the same mistakes again.
Surge, her fists crackling with electricity, unleashed a charged punch into the chest of a Red Scarf, sending them flying into a nearby wall. "There's too many of them!" she shouted in frustration. "What's the plan?!"
Shadow, recognizing the dire situation, dodged another strike before grabbing Surge's arm without warning. "Hold on."
Before she could protest, Shadow activated Chaos Control. Time slowed around them as the battlefield blurred, and in a flash, the two vanished from the chaotic street.
They reappeared in a different part of the town, a quieter area not far from the Resistance base. The streets here were far less chaotic, but the threat was still present. Shadow released Surge's arm, immediately taking in their new surroundings.
"Run," Shadow commanded, his voice firm and unwavering. "Go get Merga and Kit. Get them out of the city."
Surge scowled, pulling her arm back. "What? No! I'm not running—I can fight!"
Shadow met her gaze, his expression hard but calm. "I know you can fight," he said. "And that's exactly why I'm telling you to run."
Surge blinked, surprised by his response. She had expected some sort of dismissal, but Shadow's words hit different. He wasn't questioning her strength—he was acknowledging it. But there was more to this than just a fight.
Shadow reached into his gear and pulled out a gleaming Chaos Emerald, pressing it into Surge's hand. "We'll need strong fighters if this is how Eggman is going to play it. Go get Merga, get Kit, and get out of here. We need Super Forms to deal with the Red Scarves."
Surge stared down at the emerald in her hand, her knuckles whitening as she gripped it tightly. She hated the thought of retreating, of running when she could be fighting. But the look in Shadow's eyes told her this was bigger than just one battle.
Without another word, Shadow turned away from her, activating Chaos Control once again. He teleported back into the thick of the fight, leaving Surge standing there with the Chaos Emerald in hand.
In a blur of motion, Shadow reappeared at the heart of the battlefield, delivering a brutal spin-kick into a Red Scarf before dodging an oncoming strike. His movements were precise, calculated, each attack intended to buy Surge the time she needed to complete her mission.
Surge growled under her breath, electricity crackling around her as she clenched the Chaos Emerald tighter. "Damn it!" she hissed. She hated the idea of running, but Shadow had given her a responsibility—and, more importantly, a way to protect those she cared about. She wasn't about to let that go to waste.
With a surge of determination, Surge took off running through the streets, moving at breakneck speed. Her path was clear—get to Merga, get to Kit, and get them out. As much as she despised running, she knew it was the right call.
Deep underground, Fark, Quill, Rouge, and Corazon rushed through the dimly lit corridors of the underground facility, taking out Eggman's robots left and right. Each strike they made echoed through the hallways as they pressed forward, Fark's claws tearing through the machines while Corazon struck from the shadows with precision. Rouge, using her aerial agility, delivered devastating kicks, while Quill's attacks were swift and calculated.
As they fought their way through, Fark glanced toward Rouge. "So what exactly is this Metal Virus thing?"
Rouge ducked under a flying robot arm, responding as she knocked another machine down with a precise strike. "The Metal Virus was a bioweapon Eggman created. It turned living beings into Zombots—metallic zombies that functioned like robots. One touch, and you were infected, spreading the virus to others."
Corazon shuddered. "That sounds horrifying."
Quill nodded grimly, kicking a robot into the wall. "Yeah, it was. If Sonic hadn't stopped it, the entire planet would've been done for. It infected everything—people, animals, even plants. Nothing organic was safe."
Fark scowled, tearing apart another robot. "Eggman's insane for even thinking of using something like that."
Rouge leapt over a blast from a turret, landing softly beside the others. "You're right, but what's strange is that Eggman doesn't usually go back to his old toys. It's not like him to refine something he's already used."
They continued deeper into the facility until they entered a massive room. Inside, standing triumphantly with his foot placed on top of Mayor Zao, was a sleek-looking opossum they hadn't seen before—Clutch. Around him stood a group of Red Scarves, with familiar faces like Spade, Mystic, and the ever-boisterous Rough and Tumble flanking him.
Clutch looked up as the group entered, his eyes narrowing in curiosity. "Well, well, well. What do we have here?" He grinned smugly. "How did you even find this place?"
Fark glanced at the others, unsure of who this opossum was, but stepped forward nonetheless. "It wasn't hard," he said with a smirk. "I could sense where the fading waves were coming from. Whoever you are, you didn't hide your tracks well enough."
Clutch chuckled, his grin widening. "Who I am isn't important. But I'll tell you this—I wasn't expecting company this early." He nudged Zao with his foot, before kicking the defeated Mayor toward them. Zao groaned as his body slid across the floor, coming to rest at Fark's feet.
Clutch crossed his arms, speaking casually, "Take him and go. I'm feeling generous today. After all, Mayor Zao isn't infected with the Metal Virus."
Quill narrowed his eyes. "What are you talking about?"
Clutch smiled even wider, his voice filled with dark amusement. "My benefactor, Eggman, has refined the virus. Infection is no longer automatic. It only happens when Eggman wills it. He's perfected control over it."
Rouge's gaze hardened. "So you're just working for Eggman now? You're his puppet?"
Clutch scoffed. "Puppet? Hardly. Let's just say we have a... mutual understanding. As long as I get what I want, he gets what he wants."
Fark clenched his fists, glaring at Clutch. "You think you can just walk away from all of this?"
Clutch gave a nonchalant shrug. "Like I said, I'm being generous. You have your Mayor. Now, I suggest you leave before I change my mind."
Rouge assessed the situation quickly, her sharp eyes darting between Clutch and the others surrounding him. She could feel the tension in the air, and as much as she wanted to fight, she knew that they were outnumbered and outmatched in this moment. The odds were stacked against them.
She let out a frustrated sigh. "Quill, grab Zao."
Quill hesitated for a split second, his eyes flicking between Clutch and Rouge, but he knew better than to question her judgment. With a nod, he moved toward Zao, putting the exhausted Mayor onto his shoulder.
Rouge glanced around the room one last time, her instincts screaming that this wasn't the right moment to engage. "This battle was lost before it even began."
Clutch's smug grin didn't fade as he watched them. "Smart choice."
Without another word, Rouge turned to Fark and Corazon, signaling for them to fall back. Fark clenched his fists but followed the order, though his eyes remained locked on Clutch. Corazon gave one last wary look at the Red Scarves but moved swiftly with the group as they began to retreat.
As they left the room, Clutch's laughter echoed behind them. "Run along now. We'll meet again soon enough."
As Sonic, Lilac, and Omega continued dealing with the relentless Red Scarves, Sonic deftly dodged several Shinobi stars that came flying at him from the shadows. The stars embedded themselves into the ground, humming with precision. Sonic landed on his feet and looked around, his senses heightened.
A voice rang out through the battlefield, smooth and filled with malice. "Very impressive, hedgehog."
The Red Scarves members all suddenly stopped their attacks, backing away slowly and forming a wide ring around Sonic, Lilac, and Omega. The tension in the air grew thick as the ground began to rumble beneath them. Without warning, a swirl of ice erupted from the ground in the middle of the ring, the cold mist spreading outward. As the frost subsided, a figure emerged—a male bat Mobian, dressed in green Shinobi garb, with a cold, calculating expression on his face.
Sonic narrowed his eyes, instantly recognizing the outfit. "Heavy Shinobi?" he called out, his voice laced with disbelief.
The bat Mobian chuckled darkly, shaking his head. "Not anymore. I go by Kunai now," he replied, his tone cold. "And I'm here to put an end to your interference, Sonic."
Omega stepped forward, his arm cannons aimed directly at Kunai, his voice booming. "WHY DO YOU LOOK LIKE THAT?" His mechanical voice carried confusion and anger.
Kunai tilted his head slightly, unbothered by Omega's threat. "The Metal Virus has been broken down into three stages," he said, motioning to the surrounding Red Scarves members. "You've already seen the first stage—control. These Red Scarves are under Eggman's command, their free will overridden."
Sonic exchanged a glance with Lilac, who was also trying to make sense of what they were hearing.
Kunai continued, his voice filled with pride. "What you see before you now is the second stage: the ability for robots to become pseudo-organics. I was once fully mechanical, but now... everything works." His eyes gleamed with sadistic joy. "I can finally feel the pain of battle... and relish in it."
Sonic took a step forward, narrowing his eyes. "What's the third stage?"
Kunai clicked his tongue disapprovingly. "You'll never get the chance to learn that, hedgehog." His gaze sharpened, a cruel smile crossing his face. "Because you're going to die here."
Before anyone could react, Kunai lunged forward with blinding speed, his movements almost too fast to track. He drew two ice-bladed kunai, and with a flourish, he slashed at Sonic, who barely managed to dodge the attack by a hair.
Lilac, seeing her chance, dashed forward, delivering a powerful kick aimed at Kunai's midsection. He caught her leg mid-air, twisting her momentum and sending her spiraling into the ground. Kunai followed up with a barrage of ice kunai, but Lilac managed to deflect them, rolling back to her feet in time.
Omega unleashed a hail of bullets and missiles from his arm cannons, targeting Kunai from multiple angles. The bat ninja smirked, using his agility to dodge most of the projectiles, while slashing others out of the air with his ice blades.
Sonic zigzagged between the onslaught of attacks, closing the distance between himself and Kunai. He went in for a homing attack, but Kunai vanished in a blur of motion, reappearing behind him. With a flick of his wrist, Kunai sent a barrage of ice shuriken flying toward Sonic's back.
At the last second, Omega intervened, taking the brunt of the attack. Ice shards embedded themselves in Omega's frame, slowing his movements as frost began to spread across his metal limbs.
"Thanks, Omega!" Sonic shouted, using the distraction to try and land a kick on Kunai. But once again, Kunai dodged, spinning gracefully as he counterattacked with a swift strike to Sonic's side, knocking him into the dirt.
Kunai leapt into the air, flipping over Omega with ease. He landed directly on Omega's back, slamming his ice blade into Omega's shoulder joint. "Sorry, brother," Kunai said with mock sympathy as he twisted the blade, sending sparks and frost flying from the joint.
Omega staggered, his systems whirring as he struggled to remain upright. "MALFUNCTION DETECTED. SYSTEMS COMPROMISED."
Lilac, now back on her feet, unleashed a burst of energy toward Kunai, forcing him off Omega. She spun with her dragon kick, aiming to connect, but Kunai deflected her strikes with minimal effort, leaving her open to a retaliatory blow that sent her flying backward.
Sonic gritted his teeth as he scrambled back to his feet. He glanced over at Omega, who was on the verge of collapsing, his systems clearly straining under the damage Kunai had dealt. Lilac was holding her own, but the bat was faster than either of them had anticipated.
Kunai stood tall, twirling his ice kunai between his fingers. "I expected more of a challenge from the likes of you, Sonic. It seems Eggman overestimated your resistance."
Sonic struggled back to his feet, breathing heavily as he glanced at Omega, who was still sparking from the damage. "Omega, can you move?" Sonic asked, concern etched on his face.
Omega's systems whirred as he forced himself upright, though his movements were stiff and slow. "I CAN MOVE... BUT BARELY," Omega growled, his voice mechanical and strained.
Sonic nodded and then turned to Lilac, who had just pulled herself back up after Kunai's last strike. She met his gaze briefly before closing her eyes, catching her breath and steadying herself.
Seeing their exhaustion, Kunai, standing a few feet away, scoffed. His posture relaxed, and he casually twirled his ice kunai between his fingers. "Pathetic," he said with a smirk. "You're not even worth finishing off right now."
Sonic's eyes widened in disbelief. "What are you talking about?"
Kunai waved his hand dismissively. "You've been fighting all this time. You're tired. Beating you now wouldn't be satisfying." He motioned to the surrounding Red Scarves, signaling for them to back away. "I want to kill you when you're at your best, not when you're stumbling around like this."
Sonic blinked, his mind racing. He hadn't expected mercy from someone like Kunai, especially after the brutal fight they had just endured. "You're... letting us go?"
Kunai chuckled darkly, stepping back as his eyes gleamed. "Don't get too comfortable. Magician might've given you a pass, and I'm letting you go this time, but Heavy King...?" Kunai's smirk widened. "King will be coming after you, and he won't be so kind."
Without another word, Kunai gave Sonic one last cold look before vanishing in a blur, his body disappearing as if he had never been there.
Sonic stood there, stunned for a moment, but quickly snapped back to reality. "Lilac, Omega—you guys okay?"
Lilac nodded, though she was clearly winded. "I'll manage," she muttered, her voice still shaky from the fight.
Omega's systems flickered, but he responded, "FUNCTIONS OPERATING AT 40 PERCENT CAPACITY. I WILL CONTINUE."
Sonic clenched his fists but knew there was no time to dwell on what had just happened. Suddenly, his comms crackled to life, and a familiar voice came through. "Sonic, we need to retreat. Now."
It was Rouge, and the urgency in her voice made it clear. There was no time to argue.
Sonic gave a final glance to where Kunai had disappeared, his mind still spinning. He wanted to fight, to settle this once and for all, but for now, they needed to regroup. "Let's get out of here," he said, helping Lilac up as Omega trudged along behind them.
With that, the three of them quickly made their way to the rendezvous point, the three of them too tired and hurt to do anymore.
A short while later, all the forces had regrouped outside the city. Merga, Kit, Surge, Sonic, Lilac, Omega, Fark, Quill, Corazon, Rouge, Vanilla, Barry, Honey, and the unconscious Zao gathered, some of them nursing their wounds, others catching their breath after a narrow escape.
Rouge's eyes darted around, quickly noticing someone missing. "Where's Shadow?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.
Surge, sitting on a nearby rock with her arms crossed, scowled. "He forced me to run away and get Merga and Kit out of town." She hesitated before pulling out the Chaos Emerald Shadow had given her. "He gave me this."
Rouge let out an exasperated sigh, muttering under her breath, "That brave idiot."
Sonic, pacing restlessly, growled in frustration. "I'll go get him. I'll be back as soon as I can."
Before he could take off, Lilac reached out and grabbed his arm, stopping him. "No," she said softly but firmly.
Sonic glanced back at her, surprised. "Lilac, I can't just—"
Lilac shook her head. "As much as I'd want to go back, too, we're not ready. None of us were prepared for any of this."
Sonic's shoulders slumped, the weight of the situation settling on him. He knew she was right. They had underestimated Eggman, and now Shadow was out there alone.
Quill, standing nearby, clenched his fists, anger burning in his eyes. "We got too caught up in playing by the rules," he growled, glaring at the ground. "And now we've been ambushed by someone playing by their own rules. We don't even have the other Chaos Emerald."
Suddenly, a flash of light blinded them all. They shielded their eyes, and when the light faded, Shadow appeared, bruised and battered but standing tall. In his hand was the purple Chaos Emerald.
Breathing heavily, Shadow glanced over at Sonic, his usual stoic expression softened by exhaustion. "I told you," he muttered, holding up the emerald, "I'd get the damn emerald."
Sonic, despite everything, let out a tired chuckle. "Good job, Shadow."
The momentary relief in the air was palpable, but the situation was still dire. Vanilla, standing near the wreckage of a car, looked around at the group. "What are we supposed to do now?" she asked quietly. "Barry, Honey, and I escaped the city by car, but it's totaled now. We're stranded."
Merga, gazing at the fallen city in the distance, crossed her arms. "We'll need to rest and come up with a new strategy," she said, her voice resolute.
Quill turned to her, his tone edged with frustration. "Who made you the leader?"
Merga huffed, raising an eyebrow. "I believe it was when you, Lilac and Surge started calling me 'Mama Merga.'" She shot Quill a look before smirking. "Now, listen to Mama and let's move. We need to regroup."
A few of them, tired and battle-worn, couldn't help but laugh at the levity of the moment. For a brief second, the tension lifted. It was enough to remind them that they still had hope, even in the face of a crushing defeat.
But they knew the truth: for now, Eggman had won decisively.
