Veronica Lodge stood at the entrance of McNutt Hall, the imposing red-brick dormitory that would be her home for the next year at Indiana University Bloomington. She took a deep breath, looking up at the midwestern sky and letting the warm breeze sweep over her. Bloomington wasn't anything like Riverdale, but maybe that was a good thing. After everything that had happened back home—the drama with her father, Hiram Lodge, the mob ties, the constant life-threatening situations—she was ready for a fresh start. She was ready to be just Veronica Lodge, a college student.

Dragging her Louis Vuitton luggage behind her, she strolled through the halls, heels clicking on the tile floors, and finally found her room. Room 308. Veronica paused outside the door for a second before pushing it open. The room was already half-occupied. A girl with sun-kissed skin, a casual vibe, and beachy hair was sprawled across one of the beds, tossing a frisbee into the air and catching it repeatedly. The girl looked up as Veronica entered and smiled.

"Hey, you must be Veronica," the girl said, sitting up and tossing the frisbee onto her desk. "I'm Kiara. Kiara Carrera. Kie, for short."

Veronica nodded, scanning the room. It was modest, with two twin beds, desks, and the typical dorm furniture. Kiara's side was already decorated with pictures of beaches, sunsets, and surfboards—an obvious nod to her Outer Banks lifestyle. In contrast, Veronica's side was still bare, but she knew it wouldn't be for long. She was already planning to glam it up with a chic blend of minimalism and luxury.

"Veronica Lodge," she introduced herself with her signature confidence, dropping her bag by her bed. "But you can call me Veronica."

Kiara grinned. "Nice to meet you. You look... fancy. Are you sure you're ready for dorm life?"

Veronica smirked, flipping her hair over her shoulder as she pulled out her phone to check her messages. "I've survived worse."

Kiara leaned back, raising an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? Where are you from?"

"Riverdale. Ever heard of it?"

Kiara paused for a second, wrinkling her nose. "Can't say I have. I'm from the Outer Banks, you know, North Carolina. Beaches, surfing, sand between your toes. You know the vibe?"

Veronica laughed lightly. "The only sand I've ever seen was at a five-star resort in the Hamptons. But I can appreciate the beach life. Riverdale, though, is… well, it's complicated. I'm happy to be out of there. Time for a new chapter."

Kiara nodded knowingly, then lay back on her bed. "I hear that. College is all about new starts, right? So what's your story? What brings someone like you to Indiana?"

Veronica sat on the edge of her bed, smoothing out the comforter. "I got accepted into the Kelley School of Business. My plan is to study business—specifically finance. I want to build something on my own, get out from under my father's shadow."

"Business, huh? That sounds intense," Kiara said, looking at her with curiosity. "Finance and all that? You must be, like, really into numbers."

"More into power, actually," Veronica replied, her eyes darkening slightly as she thought about her father. "But that's a long story."

Kiara caught the shift in her tone and sat up, leaning against the wall. "Your dad sounds like a big deal."

Veronica glanced at her, debating how much to reveal. She was used to people asking about her father, and it always led to the same complicated conversation. But something about Kiara seemed different—more laid-back, less judgmental.

"You could say that," Veronica said carefully. "He's… well, he's a businessman. But not the good kind. Think less Jeff Bezos and more… Tony Soprano."

Kiara's eyes widened, but she didn't look shocked. "Wait, are you serious? Like, mob stuff?"

Veronica sighed and leaned back on her bed. "Unfortunately, yes. He's been involved in a lot of shady things, and it's caused me a lot of problems. For years, I've tried to distance myself from it, but it's hard when your last name is Lodge."

Kiara whistled low. "Damn, girl. That's intense. And here I was thinking my family drama was bad."

Veronica raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh yeah? What's your family story?"

Kiara waved her hand dismissively. "Eh, just a lot of complications. I grew up in the Outer Banks, and my family runs a restaurant, but I'm more into environmental causes. My parents don't really get it. They think I'm wasting my time, but I'm all about saving the planet, fighting for justice, that kind of thing. Not exactly mob boss level, though."

Veronica smiled, feeling a bit more at ease. "Well, at least your fight is for something good. My father… well, let's just say his battles are more about control and power. He wanted to turn Riverdale into his own personal playground. And when I pushed back, things got ugly."

"Ugly like how?" Kiara asked, curiosity clear in her voice.

Veronica hesitated, but then decided to open up. "Let's just say that people got hurt. My friends, me… and I ended up having to testify against him in court. He's in prison now, but that doesn't mean he's out of my life. Not really."

Kiara nodded slowly, taking it all in. "Wow. So coming to Indiana is like your escape, huh?"

"Exactly," Veronica said, grateful that Kiara seemed to understand. "I just needed to get as far away from that world as possible. Start fresh. No mob connections, no Lodge empire, just… me."

Kiara smiled warmly. "Well, you've come to the right place. Bloomington's pretty chill. It's not Riverdale or the Outer Banks, but it's got its own charm. You might actually like it."

Veronica laughed softly. "We'll see. I'm not used to small towns, but I guess I'll have to adjust."

Kiara stood up and stretched, grabbing her frisbee again. "Hey, if you ever need a break from all that serious business stuff, I'm always down for some frisbee, hiking, or, you know, anything outside. Trust me, it's a good way to clear your head."

Veronica smiled at the offer, feeling a sense of relief. "Thanks, Kie. I might just take you up on that. It's nice to have someone around who isn't trying to pull me into some drama or scheme."

Kiara grinned. "Hey, I'm all about the low drama life. No drama, just vibes. But you… you look like someone who's no stranger to chaos."

Veronica shrugged, a playful glint in her eyes. "I've had my fair share. But maybe here, I'll finally find some peace. Who knows?"

Kiara tossed the frisbee lightly at Veronica, who caught it with a surprised laugh. "Here's to new starts, then," Kiara said, grinning. "Just two girls from opposite coasts trying to figure it out in the middle of nowhere Indiana."

Veronica smiled, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. Maybe Bloomington wouldn't be so bad after all.
