It was a bright fall morning in Bloomington, and the air had a crispness that Veronica Lodge was still getting used to. She stood in front of her full-length dorm mirror in McNutt Hall, applying a final swipe of lipstick before glancing over at her roommate, Kiara Carrera, who was busy rifling through her dresser. Veronica had spent the last few weeks adjusting to college life, and while she felt she was slowly getting the hang of it, there were still plenty of surprises—especially when it came to Kiara's group of friends.

"So, who am I meeting today?" Veronica asked, turning to Kiara, eyebrow raised.

Kiara grinned, throwing on a light jacket. "My best friend, Sarah. You'll love her. She's from the OBX too, just like me. We go way back—kind of like my sister."

Veronica nodded, grabbing her designer handbag. "Sounds... fun." She didn't miss the slight hesitation in her own voice. Meeting new people was still a bit of an adjustment. Back in Riverdale, she knew how to command a room, but Bloomington was different. Here, she was just another student trying to make her mark. And this Sarah girl—well, if she was anything like Kiara, maybe this would be fine.

As they made their way across campus to meet Sarah Cameron, Kiara filled Veronica in on their history.

"Sarah's great. She's smart, adventurous, and we've been through a lot together. I think you two will vibe."

Veronica chuckled. "I'm not sure 'vibe' is in my vocabulary, but I'll take your word for it."

They arrived at a quaint little café just off Kirkwood Avenue, and there she was—Sarah Cameron, sitting at an outdoor table, sunglasses perched on her head, and a light scarf draped casually around her neck. She looked effortlessly beautiful, the kind of girl who didn't have to try too hard. She stood up when she saw Kiara, her face breaking into a warm smile.

"Kie!" Sarah said, wrapping Kiara in a tight hug.

Kiara returned the embrace before turning to introduce Veronica. "Sarah, this is Veronica, my roommate. Veronica, meet Sarah."

Veronica extended her hand, offering a polite smile. "Veronica Lodge. Pleasure to meet you."

Sarah smiled, but there was something off about the way she looked at Veronica—like she was sizing her up. Sarah took her hand, giving it a quick shake before releasing it. "Sarah Cameron," she replied, her tone pleasant but guarded.

Veronica noticed immediately. She'd been around enough people in her life to know when someone wasn't exactly thrilled to meet her. Still, she played it cool, taking a seat across from Sarah.

"So," Sarah said, turning her attention to Kiara. "How's it been living with this one? I've heard some things about McNutt—party central, right?"

Kiara laughed. "Yeah, it's got that reputation, but it's not so bad. Veronica's been holding down the glam side of the room, though. Pretty sure she's the fanciest one in the whole building."

Veronica smirked, leaning back in her chair. "What can I say? I'm a girl who knows what she likes. And I don't think I've seen a pair of heels since I got here."

Sarah raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "Heels? In Bloomington? You do know it's a college town, right? Not exactly the Upper East Side."

Veronica caught the dig and smiled sweetly. "I'm aware. I don't mind being a little overdressed. Besides, some of us like to stand out."

Sarah's smile faltered, but she kept it polite. "Yeah, standing out is good... as long as it's for the right reasons."

Kiara, sensing the tension, laughed nervously. "Okay, okay, let's not make this about fashion. Sarah, Veronica's from Riverdale. Pretty different from the OBX, right?"

"Riverdale, huh?" Sarah said, sipping her coffee. "Sounds... intense. I've heard some stuff about that town. A lot of drama."

Veronica shrugged, keeping her tone light. "Drama's relative, don't you think? Some people are just better at handling it than others."

Sarah didn't miss a beat. "Or some people create it."

Veronica raised her eyebrows, her smirk growing sharper. "Oh, trust me, sweetheart, if I wanted to create drama, you'd know. But I'm all about keeping the peace these days."

Kiara looked between the two, eyes wide, clearly trying to defuse the brewing storm. "Okay, hold on. Let's not start anything. We're just here to hang out, right?"

Veronica glanced at Kiara and smiled. "Of course. I'm just getting to know your friend."

Sarah leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. "Same here. I just like to know where people stand."

Veronica tilted her head. "You know, I think we stand in very different places. But that's fine. Variety is the spice of life, after all."

Kiara bit her lip, clearly regretting bringing the two of them together. "Hey, let's talk about something else. Veronica, tell Sarah about your plans for business school."

Veronica turned her gaze toward Kiara, softening slightly. "Well, I got into Kelley School of Business, so I'm focusing on finance. I've got big plans. I want to start my own company one day—something global, something powerful."

Sarah raised an eyebrow. "Finance, huh? Sounds like a lot of pressure. I've never been one for the whole corporate scene. I'd rather be out there, you know, living life."

Veronica gave her a pointed look. "I believe you can live life and still handle business. Some of us are good at both."

The air between them was practically crackling now, and Kiara shifted uncomfortably. "Okay, seriously, you two. You're more alike than you think. Veronica's just focused on different things, Sarah. She's not all about partying and beach days, but she's cool."

Sarah let out a small laugh. "Sure. Cool."

Veronica straightened in her chair, giving Sarah a long, assessing look. "Look, I get it. I'm not your type of person, and that's fine. But if you think I'm here to step on anyone's toes or take over your friendship with Kiara, you're wrong."

Sarah blinked, clearly caught off guard by Veronica's directness. "I never said that."

"You didn't have to," Veronica replied smoothly. "But I've been in enough situations to know when someone's throwing shade. And trust me, Sarah, I've dealt with worse. I'm not here to compete."

Kiara held up her hands, her eyes darting between the two. "Okay, okay, let's just relax. We're all friends here, right? Sarah, you and I go way back. Veronica's new, but she's cool. We're just figuring things out."

Sarah looked down at her coffee, then back up at Kiara, her expression softening slightly. "I'm sorry, Kie. I guess I just wasn't expecting someone like Veronica."

Veronica smiled, but there was no warmth in it. "No offense taken. People like me can be surprising."

Sarah sighed, leaning back in her chair. "I don't want to fight or anything. Kie's important to me, and if you're important to her, then I'll figure it out."

Veronica nodded. "Fair enough."

The rest of the conversation stayed tense but manageable, with Kiara doing most of the talking, trying to keep the peace between her two friends. But Veronica knew better. Sarah wasn't going to be a fan of hers anytime soon, and that was fine by her. She'd dealt with tougher rivals back in Riverdale. If Sarah wanted to play games, Veronica could play them too.

As they left the café, Kiara looped her arm through Veronica's, trying to lighten the mood. "That went... okay, right?"

Veronica smirked. "Define 'okay.' Look, Kie, Sarah and I are probably never going to braid each other's hair and share secrets. But if she's important to you, I'll deal with her."

Kiara sighed. "She's not usually like this. I think she's just... protective. We've been through a lot."

Veronica smiled, though her eyes remained cool. "I get it. But don't worry—I know how to handle people like Sarah."

Kiara looked at her, biting her lip. "Just... promise me you won't start anything?"

Veronica's smirk widened. "Kie, I'm not starting anything. But if something starts... I won't back down."

And as they walked back toward McNutt Hall, the crisp fall air filling their lungs, Veronica knew one thing for sure—this wasn't the last time she'd cross paths with Sarah Cameron.
