Chapter 46: Lost
I had taken a backseat to my own body. It was as if I was on autopilot. Pure anger had taken over. He ran from me, but I did not care. I would chase him to the end of the earth. If that is what it took to kill him. I would make him pay. I would not stop. I was going to make him suffer for everything that he has done. I wanted to make him feel all the pain he had inflicted. I ignored the pain coming from the soles of my feet. Catching him was more important than any pain that I was feeling. Thanks to him, Deku would never be able to feel anything ever again. I was closing in on him. I could feel him almost in my grasp. I had him! Or at least I thought. He was so close but sped off at the last minute. He was so fast. It was almost inhuman, unlike any quirk I'd ever seen, and much faster than he was before. There was a loud crash coming from the building up ahead. The debris flew towards me, knocking me back. I shut my eyes tightly waiting for the impact, but someone caught me. I looked up, it was Dabi. I jumped from his arms looking back at Shigaraki. He stood there smiling next to a big black creature with its brain exposed. It screeched, making a sound I would recognize anywhere. That day, Mirko almost died. It was the same sound the monster made. This thing was a Nomu. He jumped on its back racing off even faster than before. I shot off after him. Dabi followed after me, trying his best to keep up with me.
"Yami stop! He's baiting you! You have to be careful, think about this!"
"I DO NOT CARE! HE IS MINE!"
I sped up, chasing them into the outskirts of the city. My fingertips and calves burned as the blue flames ate away my skin. The pain was nothing compared to the rage that was burning inside of my heart. I sped up, he was so close again that I could taste it. I had to catch him.
I HAD TO!
I stretched my hand out. I was so close. He was just a few inches away. Or so I thought. He looked back at me, that sick grin of his spread wide.
"You were so close Yami!" He taunted.
He jumped from the back of the Nomu and flew high into the sky. The Nomu quickly spun around knocking me back. Dabi caught me mid-air. I jumped out of Dabi's arms running towards the monster. He swiped at my feet. I jumped up grabbing it by the beak. It disintegrated in a matter of seconds. Shiragaki cackled from above me. I looked up at him seething.
"Look at you Yami! You are starting to look so very familiar. Like a certain monster we all know and loathe." he laughed. "You truly are your father's daughter!"
"I am going to kill you!"
"Now slow down Yami. One thing at a time. You can kill me or you can go and save your precious friends and family."
I scowled up at him. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"You were so preoccupied with killing me. You forgot all about them. They most likely will have gone back to the school. If the explosion at the funeral home didn't kill them all already." he grinned.
I felt frozen in place. He had to be lying… right? Or did I want him to be?
"It seems there is much more evil in your heat than you know. You and I are much more alike than you think."
With that, he sped off. I felt Dabi's hand grab my wrist.
"Yami don't. We have to go. Now!"
I clenched my jaw and nodded. I looked down at my arms and legs. They were charred. The adrenaline was starting to wear off. I collapsed into his arms.
I caught her just as she fell. She was about to pass out. I couldn't let that happen. If she did, there was a slim chance she would be waking back up. She was covered in sweat, and from the calves and elbows down. Her skin was charred. The smell of her burnt flesh was all I could think about.
"Yami? Yami! You have to heal yourself okay? You have to."
"I-, I can't. I'm so tired."
I kept tapping her face, trying to keep her awake.
"Baby look at me. I know you're tired, but please heal yourself. Then you can sleep all you want." I said panicking.
She was slipping, and fast.
"Please, I'm begging you," I whispered.
I exhaled in relief when I saw that familiar green glow coming from her. Her arms and legs had gone back to normal. She was out cold. I picked her up and held her close. I kicked off my shoes, getting ready to fly. I was used to this pain, she was not. I shot off into the sky and headed for the school. On my way back I could see all of it; the devastation across the city. There were countless Heroes and Police Officers everywhere. They were trying to capture the villains. The sun had gone down by the time I'd gotten to the school. She was still out cold, and I was grateful. The place was a mess; debris, ash, even blood. I didn't need her seeing any of this. I walked to the door quietly. I wasn't sure what else was still lurking around. The door seemed to be barricaded from the inside. I backed away and looked up; trying to see if any lights were on and nothing. I shot up to the roof of the building that was still standing. I could see someone was already there; Bakugo.
"Is she alright?"
I nodded. "She just over-exerted herself. She'll be fine."
"Come one, I'll bring you to everyone else. We'll explain everything to you there."
I followed him down the stairs, being careful not to wake her.
"No need. We know about it all. We were chasing after Shigaraki. He told us; more like rubbed it in our faces."
"That son of a bitch."
"I saw blood outside… did you lose someone?" I asked him.
"We've lost a lot," he said quietly.
I didn't want to push any further. He didn't seem in the right headspace to talk about it. He led me into a common room. The lights were off, but a few candles were lit around the room. All of them looked defeated, and there were fewer of them than before. It was silent. No one even looked at one another. I spotted Eraser-head in the corner of the room. He looked the worst out of everyone. I was going to find a corner of my own to hide in until Yami woke up but he spotted us. He came rushing over; a worried look on his face.
"Is she alright?"
I nodded. "She's fine. She is just a little tired. Hopefully, she will wake up soon. She burnt herself out chasing Shigaraki. What happened here?"
"There were nomu's waiting for the children... we lost a few."
"I see, and the funeral home?" I asked.
"They bombed that too. The jail, and most of the hospitals. Recovery girl is dead." he explained.
I sat down cradling Yami in my lap.
"This has all gone to shit."
"There is someone outside," Bakugo whispered.
"Who is it?" Best Jeanist whispered back.
I laid Yami down on the couch and went over to the door.
"It's All for One," I said backing away from the barricade.
What is he doing here?" Best Jeanist asked.
"I am here for my daughter," he said walking right through the wall.
Best Jeanist blocked his path. "How do I know we can trust you?"
"Because you are still alive," he said brushing past him.
All For One went over to her and checked on her.
"Shigarki will come for her. I've come to help protect her as well as help her."
"This is your doing!" Best Jeanist yelled. "We have lost so many people because of the monster you have created."
"I am fully aware of that. I know what I have done. That is why I am here. I know it is too late to make amends, but she is my daughter and I will protect my own."
"If you step out of line-"
"You may save your idle threats Jeanist. You know you cannot beat me. Save your energy for the battle to come."
"What now?" I asked All For One.
"Now, we wait, because he will come, and we must be ready."
