The early morning sun cast a gentle glow over the bedroom, illuminating the peaceful scene. Jay Halstead lay in bed, his arms wrapped protectively around Hailey Upton. As Hailey stirred, she slowly opened her eyes, feeling the comforting warmth of Jay's embrace.
"Morning, Jay," she whispered softly.
"Morning, babe. Sleep well?" Jay replied sleepily, his voice thick with drowsiness.
Hailey smiled and snuggled closer, savoring the moment. But then, she felt something wet. Frowning, she lifted the blanket slightly and noticed a small stain of blood on the sheets.
"Oh no…" she muttered.
Quickly, she sat up, gently disentangling herself from Jay's arms. Jay looked at her, concern etched on his face.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
"I think I started my period," Hailey explained.
She got out of bed and walked over to her dresser, pulling out a calendar. After checking the dates, she nodded to herself. "Yep, right on schedule."
Grabbing a box of tampons and pads from the drawer, Hailey headed to the bathroom. Jay watched her with a mix of concern and understanding.
"Do you need anything?" he offered.
"No, I'm good. Thanks, Jay," Hailey replied with a grateful smile.
Jay smiled back and nodded, lying down again as Hailey went into the bathroom. A few minutes later, she emerged, feeling more comfortable. She glanced over at Jay, who was still lying in bed, half-asleep. Smiling warmly, she walked over to him.
"Hey, sleepyhead," she said softly.
Jay stirred slightly, his eyes barely open. Hailey gently brushed his hair back and kissed his forehead.
"Can I borrow one of your shirts, babe?" she asked.
Jay mumbled something incoherent, still half-asleep. Hailey chuckled and gently shook his shoulder.
"Come on, Jay. I need a shirt," she insisted.
Finally, Jay opened his eyes a bit more, giving her a sleepy smile. "Sure, anything for you, Hails."
Hailey smiled and headed over to the closet, grabbing one of Jay's shirts. She slipped it on and looked back at Jay, who was already drifting back to sleep.
"Thanks, love," she whispered.
Quietly, she left the room, letting Jay rest a bit longer.
Jay and Hailey sprinted down the narrow alleyway, their breaths coming in heavy, determined bursts. The suspect, a shadowy figure, darted around a corner, glancing back only to see the relentless pursuit.
"Stop! Police!" Jay shouted, his voice echoing off the brick walls.
The suspect ignored the command, pushing himself harder. Hailey, equally determined, matched Jay's pace.
"We've got him!" she called out, her eyes fixed on the fleeing figure.
Suddenly, the suspect stopped and spun around, catching Hailey off guard. With a powerful shove, he sent her crashing into the brick wall.
She hit it with a sickening thud and crumpled to the ground, landing on her stomach. A sharp, intense cramp shot through her abdomen, and she let out a sob of pain.
"Hailey!" Jay's voice was filled with panic as he rushed to her side. He knelt beside her, his eyes wide with concern, and gently placed a hand on her back.
"Hailey, are you okay?" he asked softly.
Hailey struggled to catch her breath, tears streaming down her face. She clutched her stomach, the pain overwhelming. "It hurts, Jay. It hurts so much," she whimpered.
Jay's face hardened with determination. He quickly scanned the area, spotting the suspect attempting to escape again. Without hesitation, he grabbed his radio.
"Officer down! I need backup at my location, now!" he barked into the device.
Turning his attention back to Hailey, his voice softened. "Hang in there, Hailey. Help is on the way," he assured her.
Later that evening, Jay walked into Hailey's hospital room. She was awake, dressed in a hospital gown, with an IV line running into her arm. As soon as Jay saw her, he rushed over, his face lighting up with relief.
"Hailey!" he exclaimed, taking her hand gently.
Hailey smiled up at him, her eyes twinkling despite the situation. "Hey, Jay," she said softly. "Turns out it was just a really bad period."
Jay let out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding and chuckled softly. "You had me worried there for a second, Hails."
She squeezed his hand reassuringly. "I'm okay, Jay. Just need a bit of rest."
Jay nodded, his eyes filled with affection and relief. "I'm just glad you're alright. I'll be here with you, every step of the way."
Hailey's smile widened. "I know you will. Thanks, Jay."
