She had been sent the most delicate bracelet as part of her payment. Something very simple. And a small envelope of cash. Maria could not believe her riches.

'My dear, the money is all yours. Spend it on a fabulous three course meal with me plus champagne before you take your vows' he advised her. 'If you don't do so, then I will apply for a bank account for you. Because then I will be paying you a salary.'

It was disconcerting that Maria had not thought much of her destiny. The one she'd assumed would be hers from a young age. The Reverend Mother had warned her that their way of life may not suit her. Maria had insisted. She was sure she could make it work. Reverend Mother insisted that she have some life experience first. And told her to take her time. Famed for her wisdom, her commands were respected by all.

Max fastened the silver bracelet around her wrist and admired it.

'It suits you handsomely. Elsa has very good taste.'

Maria nodded. Could she really live a life like this?

'She'd try and spoil you with luxury but you wouldn't take it. You'd always be too sensible and unassuming and it's a refreshing change for her. People like her of course but many for what she can offer them. Charm, wit, money. She needs someone who will give a little back and cheer her up.'

'Is she very lonely?'

'She can be. She is young still. It would be a shame to let a woman like that wither away. All the parties in Austria could not fulfil her if she doesn't have someone to come back to, who listens to her and cares for her. Just to attend a few gatherings with her would be lifesaving. I have been given status thanks to her. She has helped finance my career but she knows that I cannot be by her side at every event.'

Maria nodded in comprehension.

'Too much time' she murmured.

'Pardon?'

'She has too much time on her hands. Most wealthy people do.'

He stared at her.

'Did you tell her that?'

'She agreed with me.'

He laughed.

'You're just the tonic she needs.'

Maria felt a warm glow wash over her.
