During your travels with the brothers you noticed Dean had a habit of always wanting to stop off at bars to win some bets and make a quick buck and this was one of those times. You were lounging in the backseat of the Impala reading a book you happened to pick up at a store at one point while Sam was laying down on the hood of the Impala reading the newspaper as you two waited for Dean. The car's windows were down so you could hear all of the background noise and music coming for the country bar. After waiting for what felt like forever Dean finally walked out with a big smile on his face and a wad of cash in his hand, he started laughing as he approached the car waving his winnings in his hand. "You know, we could get day jobs once in a while." Sam growled as he looked up from his newspaper. You got up and poked your head out the window to see how much he won this time.
"Hunting's our day job." Dean retorted as he counted his winnings. "And the pay is crap."
"Yeah, but hustling pool?" Sam asked as he glanced towards the bar for a second before looking at Dean again. "Credit card scams? It's not the most honest thing in the world, Dean."
"Well, let's see. Honest." Dean pointed out as he held up his empty hand "Fun and easy." Dean continued as he held up the hand full of cash. "It's no contest. Besides, we're good at it. It's what we were raised to do."
"I was not raised on that so I'll leave all of the hustling and scams to you." you stated from the backseat.
"Yeah, well, how we were raised was jacked." Sam commented.
"Yeah, says you. We got a new gig or what? Dean asked as he glanced at the newspaper Sam was holding.
"Maybe." Sam replied as he got up off the Impala's hood and you got out of the car to join the boys by the hood. "Oasis Plains, Oklahoma. Not far from here. Gas-company employee. Dustin Burwash supposedly died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob."
"Huh?" you and Dean asked in unison with a confused look on your faces.
"Human mad cow disease." Sam translated into normal speak for yours and Dean's sake.
"Mad cow. Wasn't that onOprah?" Dean asked as he looked down at the newspaper which was laying on the hood.
"You watchOprah?" Sam asked with a surprised look on his face. There was an awkward silence before Dean spoke again.
"So this guys eats a bad burger. Why is it our kind of thing?" Dean asked avoiding Sam's question.
"Mad cow disease causes massive brain degeneration. It takes months, even years, for the damage to appear. But this guy Dustin, sounds like his brain disintegrated in about an hour. Maybe less."
"Ew," you groaned with a disgusted look on your face.
"Okay, That's weird." Dean agreed.
"Yeah. Now, it could be a disease. Or it could be something much nastier." Sam suggested.
"All right. Oklahoma." Dean stated as he clapped his hands together and got up off of the Impala. " Man. Work, work, work. No time to spend my money." Dean commented as you guys got into the car.
"Relax, your money isn't going anywhere." you teased earning a chuckle and smile from Sam and an eye-roll from Dean.
You guys decided to first investigate the gas-company Dustin worked at to find out how exactly he died. Once Dean parked you guys got out of the car and noticed a couple of guys near the front of the building "Travis Weaver?" Sam asked as you guys walked up to a man by the entrance to the building.
"Yeah, that's right." Travis replied as he gave each of you a once over.
"Are you the Travis who worked with Uncle Dusty?" Dean asked as he came up with a cover story for you guys.
"Dustin never mentioned any nieces or nephews." Travis stated.
"Really? Well, he sure mentioned you. He said you were the greatest." Dean replied.
"Yeah." Sam said as he nodded his head in agreement.
"He talked about the work you guys did together all the time." you commented.
"Oh he did? huh." Travis wondered.
"Listen, we wanted to ask you, uh, what exactly happened out there?" Dean asked.
"I'm not sure." Travis answered as he shook his head. "He fell in a sinkhole. I went to the truck to get some rope, and, uh...by the time I got back..."
"What did you see?" you asked.
"Nothing. Just Dustin." Dustin replied.
"No wounds or anything?" Sam wondered.
"Well, he was bleeding...from his eyes and his ears, his nose." Travis explained as he pointed to his eyes and nose. "That's it."
"So you think it could be this whole mad cow thing?" Dean asked.
"I don't know. That's what the doctors are saying." Travis responded.
"But if it was, uh, he would've acted strange beforehand, like dementia, loss of motor control. You ever notice anything like that?" Sam asked.
"No. No way." Travis scoffed as he shook his head again. "Yeah, but then again if it wasn't some disease, what the hell was it?"
"That's a good question." Dean stated.
"Can you tell us where this happened?" Sam asked.
"Yeah." Travis replied.
Travis had told you three about a housing development being built nearby where Dustin was working when he died. Dean drove into the development and as he drove by you noticed a sign that said "Luxury homes. Oasis Plains Estates. Now selling." Most of the houses were still under construction, but you guys found the house Dustin was killed in front of and Dean parked on the side of the road. "Huh." Dean muttered as you guys walked up to the yellow tape, beyond that was the hole you assumed Dustin fell in when he died. "What do you two think?"
"I don't know. But if that guy Travis was right it happened pretty damn fast." Sam commented as you walked under the yellow tape to look into the hole in question.
"So, what...some sort of creature chewed on his brain?" you asked as you and the boys looked inside the hole. You figured it was probably about eight feet deep, but Dustin had broken his ankle when he fell in, so he was stuck.
"No, there'd be an entry wound." Sam explained. "Sounds like this thing worked from the inside." Sam stated was he knelt down to get a better look in the hole.
"Huh." Dean muttered as he shined a flashlight in the hole. "Looks like there's only room for one. Who wants to flip a coin?" Dean asked as he walked away from the hole.
"Dean, we have no idea what's down there." Sam said getting up and looking at Dean.
"All right. I'll go if you're sacred." Dean said as he grabbed some nearby rope. "You scared?"
"Fine, I'll go then, beside I'll fit down there easier than you two." you suggested.
"Be my guest," Dean said as he wrapped the rope and your waist and pulled on it tightly so it wouldn't come loose. You jumped down into the hole to look around you mostly found dirt and roots from the nearby tree and plants. When you were about to give up you noticed some dead beetles at the bottom of the hole.
"I found something!" you called up to the boys so they could pull you out of the hole. Once you were out you handed Sam one of the beetles you found in the hole. Then for the time being you three decided to leave the housing development to get more information on the beetle you found.
Dean was driving down the road while Sam was examining the beetle you found. "So you found some beetles." Dean stated watching Sam poke and prodded at it. "In a hole in the ground. That's shocking, Y/N."
"There were no tunnels, no tracks. No evidence of any other kind of creature down there." you explained as you leaned closer to the boys.
"You know, some beetles do eat meat." Sam pointed out as he looked over at Dean. "Now, it's usually dead meat, but-"
"How many did you find down there, Y/N?" Dean interrupted as he glanced back at you.
"Ten." you answered.
"It'd take a whole lot more than that to out some dude's brain." Dean stated looking back at the road.
"Well, maybe there were more." Sam suggested.
"Oh, I don't know. Sounds like a stretch to me." Dean commented.
"Well, we need more information on the area, the neighborhood, whether something like this has ever happened before." Sam explained as he noticed Dean looking at a nearby house. "What?"
"I know a good place to start." Dean said as he parked in front of a house that had an open house sign in front of it. "I'm kind of hungry for a little barbecue. How about you two?" Sam just turned and gave Dean a look. "Oh, what? We can't talk to the locals?"
"And the free food's got nothing to do with it?" Sam pointed out.
"Of course not. I'm a professional." Dean stated.
"Right." Sam said as you guys got out of the Impala and walked down the sidewalk to the house.
"Growing up in a place like this would freak me out." Dean commented as he looked around the street.
"Why?" Sam asked, walking just behind Dean with his hands in his pockets.
"The manicured lawn, "How was your day, honey?" I'd blow my brains out." Dean answered.
"There's nothing wrong with normal." Sam responded.
"My parents almost brought a house like these, but they had too many rules and regulations." you said. "No private fences, not too many dogs, no bonfires in the backyard."
"See Sam." Dean said pointing his thumb back at you. "I'd take our family over normal any day." Once you guys got to the front door of the open house Dean knocked on the door.
"Welcome." An older man greeted as he opened the door.
"Is this the barbecue?" Dean asked.
"Yeah. Not the best weather, but...I'm, uh, Larry Pike the developer here. And you are...?" Larry explained as you shook all of your hands.
"Dean, this is Sam, and Y/N." Dean replied looking at the two of you behind him.
"Sam, Dean, Y/N. Good to meet you. So you three are interested in Oasis Plains?" Larry asked looking between the three of you.
"Yes, sir." Dean replied before thinking.
"Let me just say, we accept homeowners of any race, religion, color or...sexual orientation." Larry stated as an awkward silence fell over all of you.
"We're brothers, but Sam and Y/N just recently got married so they are actually the ones interested in buying a house. I'm just helping them out." Dean explained as he gestured to between the three of you.
"What!" Sam cried out.
"Dean!" you growled shocked at his sudden cover story.
"Don't mind them, they're still a little embarrassed," Dean laughed as he smiled big.
"Well congratulations you two." Larry said with an innocent smile on his face. Both you and Sam knew you had to continue with this cover story now.
"Yeah that's us isn't it, honey?" Sam asked as he awkwardly wrapped his arm around your shoulder.
"Yes dear," you said trying hold a smile on your face as you glared at Dean.
"Well come on in," Larry said leading you guys into the house and into the backyard.
"You said you were the developer?" Sam asked.
"Eighteen months ago, I was walking this valley with my survey team. There was nothing here but scrub brush and squirrels. And you know what, we built such a nice place to live that I actually bought into it myself. This is our house." Larry explained as he gestured to the house behind you. "We're the first family in Oasis Plains. This is my wife, Joanie."
"Hi there." She greeted.
"Hi." Dean said as he shook her hand.
"Dean, Sam and his wife, Y/N." Larry said introducing you guys to her.
"Hi there, nice to meet you." She said shaking yours and Sam's hand.
"Tell them how much you love the place, honey. And lie if you have to, because I need to sell some houses." Larry said leaning into his wife a bit.
"Right." she said as they both chuckled.
"Boys, Y/N, if you'll excuse me." Larry said as he walked away.
"Don't let his salesman routine scare you. This really is a great place to live." Joanie explained as another woman cut into the conversation.
"Hi, I'm Lynda Bloome, head of sales." Lynda said as she introduced herself to you three.
"And Lynda was second to move in." Joanie mentioned. "She's a very noisy neighbor, though." Lynda laughed as Joanie walked away.
"She's kidding of course, I take it you three are interested in becoming homeowners?" Lynda asked with a big smile on her face.
"Well these two are." Dean replied pointing to you and Sam. "I'm going to go talk to Larry, ok guys." Dean said as he walked back into the house. You and Sam continued discussing the houses.
"Who can say no to a steam shower? I use mine every day." Lynda explained trying to sell you and Sam a house.
"Sounds just lovely," you said with a fake smile on your face.
"You also have three different whirlpool tubs to choose from." Lynda continued when you noticed a tarantula crawling towards her hand. "The hardware for the tubs includes nickel, brass and when you see the kitchen you can choose-"
"Excuse me." Sam said he nudged past her to pick up the tarantula and she walked away. You followed Sam as he carried it over to a teenage boy a few feet away who had a big smile on his face. "Is this yours?"
"You gonna tell my dad?" the boy asked as he took the tarantula from Sam.
"I don't know who is your dad?" Sam asked as the boy scoffed.
"Yeah, Larry usually skips me in the family introductions." The boy explained as he looked at his tarantula.
"Ouch. First-name basis with the old man sounds pretty grim." Sam stated.
"Well, I'm not exactly brochure material." The boy commented as he let the tarantula crawl across his hands.
"Well hang in there, it gets better. All right? I promise." Sam said trying to reassure the boy.
''When?" The boy asked with a doubtful look on his face.
"Matthew!" You heard Larry from the backdoor. You and Sam turned around to see Larry and Dean walking towards you guys. "I am so sorry about my son and hispet."
"It's no bother." Sam explained.
"Excuse us." Larry said as he pulled Matthew away from you guys to the back porch.
"Remind you of somebody?" Sam scoffed as Dean joined you guys again. You three watched as Larry was getting on Matthew, probably for letting his spider loose when guests around. "Dad?"
"Dad never treated us like that." Dean stated as Sam scoffed again.
"Well, dad never treated you like that. You were perfect. He was all over my case." Sam explained as Dean shook his head. "You don't remember?"
"We-Maybe he had to raise his voice, but sometimes you were out of line." Dean replied.
"Right. Right." Sam chuckled as he looked away from Dean. "Like when I said I'd rather play soccer than learn bowhunting."
"Bowhunting's an important skill." Dean stated.
"Whatever." Sam mumbled as he shook his head.
"How was your tour Dean?" you asked trying to change the subject.
"Oh, it was excellent. I'm ready to buy." Dean answered as Sam scoffed. "So you might be on to something. Looks like Dustin Burwash wasn't the first strange death here."
"What happened?" Sam asked.
"A year ago, before they broke ground one of Larry's surveyors dropped dead while on the job. Get this: severe allergic reaction to bee stings." Dean explained.
"More bugs." Sam said.
"More bugs." Dean repeated.
Once the open house was over you guys planned on leaving the development for the day, and to your surprise Dean actually let Sam drive for once. Dean reading an old book while Sam drove. "You know, I've heard of killer bees, but killer beetles. What is it that could make different bugs attack?" Dean wondered.
"Well, hauntings sometimes include bug manifestations." Sam suggested.
"Yeah. But I didn't see any evidence of ghost activity." Dean stated.
"Yeah, me neither." Sam agreed.
"Maybe they're being controlled somehow." You suggested. "You know, by something or someone."
"You mean, likeWillard?" Sam asked.
"Could be, just bugs instead of rats." Dean said.
"There are cases of psychic connections between people and animals. Elementals, telepaths." Sam pointed out.
"Yeah, that whole Timmy-Lassie thing." Dean mentioned. "Larry's kid. And bugs for pets."
"Matt?" Sam asked.
"Yeah." Dean answered.
"He did try to scare the realtor with a tarantula." you pointed out.
"Think he's our Willard?" Dean wondered.
"I don't know. Anything's possible, I guess." Sam pondered.
"Ooh, hey. Pull over here." Dean said as he closed the book and pointed to a nearby house. Sam parked in the driveway.
"What are we doing here?" Sam asked as he looked up at the house while Dean got out of the car.
"It's too late to talk to anybody else." Dean stated as he opened the garage door.
"Are we really going to squat in an empty house?" you asked as you looked out the window at Dean.
"I wanna try the steam shower, Come on." Dean explained as he motioned for Sam to park the Impala in the garage. "Come on!" Sam drove the car into the garage as Dean closed the garage door.
The brothers ended up sharing the master bedroom while you got the spare bedroom to yourself. It was nice to actually have a bed all to yourself for once. Since you have joined the brothers you have been mainly sleeping on the couch or a cot in the motel rooms. You took a quick shower to fresh up, but you had to use the smaller bathroom since Dean was taking too long in the master bathroom. You and Sam were ready to go, but Dean was still in the steam shower so you offered to go check on him while Sam waited in the car. As you walked up to the bathroom door you could still hear the shower running."Are you ever coming out of there?" you asked as you knocked on the door. "Sam and I are ready to go we're just waiting on you!" you called through the door.
"What?" you heard Dean yell over the steam shower.
"Dean, a police call came in on the scanner." you explained.
"Hold on." Dean said as he shut the water off.
"Someone was found dead three blocks from here. Come on." you called through the door. Then Dean opened the door and poked his head out, there was a towel wrapped around his head and steam flooding out of the bathroom.
"The shower is awesome, you're welcome to join me." Dean said suggestively as he smiled at you.
"Come on." you said as you rolled your eyes and walked back downstairs to join Sam in the Impala.
When you guys got to the crime scene the coroners were carting a body out of the house. As you got out of the car each of you unfolded your umbrellas to stay dry from the rain that was pouring down. You followed the boys as they walked up to Larry who was talking on the phone with somebody."Okay, look, I don't know anything more right now. I'll-I'll have to call you back. All right." Larry said as he hung up his cell phone. "Hello. You're, uh, back early."
"We just drove in to take another look around the neighborhood." Dean stated as he glanced around the street.
"What's going on?" Sam asked.
"You guys met, uh...Lynda Bloome at the barbecue?" Larry asked as he watched the coroners load the body into the back of their car.
"The realtor." Sam replied.
"Well, she uh...passed away last night." Larry explained.
"What happened?" you asked.
"I'm still trying to find out. Identified the body for the police. Look, I-I'm sorry. This isn't a good time now." Larry said.
"It's okay." Sam said.
"Excuse me." Larry said as he walked back into the house to talk to the police.
"You know what we have to do, right?" Dean asked as he looked at Sam.
"Yeah. Get in that house." Sam answered.
"See if we got a bug problem." Dean stated.
You and the boys climbed onto the top of the back fence in order to jump onto the vines that hung on the side of the house and to the lower roof. Dean opened the window and led you three in to what looked like Lynda's bedroom. There you saw blood and tape on the floor outlining where her was ended up when she died. Since Sam was the last one in he closed the window as you and Dean looked around. You noticed her heels next to where her body was and the shower's glass door was shattered as if she tried to run through it. "This looks like the place." Dean said as he walked into the bathroom and picked up the towel laying in front of the shower. As he picked it up an bunch of dead spiders fell from inside the towel. "Spiders. From Spider-boy?"
"Matt." Sam corrected as he looked down at Dean. "Maybe."
Dean was driving out of the development when you guys noticed Matt get of a bus in front of you guys. Dean turned the engine off as you three watched him cross the street."Isn't his house that way?" you asked as you watched him.
"Yep." Sam answered as he glanced behind you.
"So where's he going?" Dean asked as Matt went down a hill into the nearby forest. You guys decided to get out of the Impala and follow him. When you caught up to him you saw him holding a praying mantis, letting it crawl over his hand.
"Hey, Matt." Sam greeted which caused Matt to look up at you three. "Remember me?"
"What are you doing out here?" Matt asked looking between the three of you.
"Well, we wanna talk to you." Dean replied.
"You're not here to buy a house, are you?" Matt stated. "W-wait. You're not serial killers?"
"No, no." Sam said as the brothers both scoffed and shook their heads. "No, I think you're safe."
"So, Matt...you sure know a lot about insects." Dean pointed out.
"So?" Matt asked.
"Do you know what happened to Lynda, the realtor?" Dean asked.
"I heard she died this morning." Matt replied.
"Mm, that's right spider bites." Dean stated.
"Matt...you tried to scare her with a spider." Sam started to say.
"Wait. You think I had something to do with that?" Matt asked as he pointed his finger at you three.
"Mm, you tell us." you stated.
"That tarantula was a joke." Matt explained. "Anyway, that wouldn't explain the bee attack or the gas-company guy."
"You know about those?" Sam asked.
"There is something going on here. I don't know what...but something's happening with the insects. Let me show you something." Matt said as he led you and the boys through the forest.
"So if you knew about all this bug stuff, why not tell your dad? Maybe he could clear everybody out." Sam suggested.
"Believe me, I've tried. But, uh, Larry doesn't listen to me." Matt stated.
"Why not?" Sam asked.
"Mostly?" He's too disappointed in his freak son." Matt explained as Sam chuckled.
"I hear you." Sam commented.
"You do?" Dean asked.
"Matt, how old are you?" Sam asked Matt.
"Sixteen." Matt answered as he looked at Sam.
"Well, don't sweat it, because in two years, something great's gonna happen." Sam said trying to reassure Matt.
"What?" Matt wondered.
"College. You'll be able to get out that house and way from your dad." Sam explained.
"What kind of advice is that? Kid should stick with his family." Dean argued as Sam sighed and the two of them stopped walking.
"How much further, Matt?" you asked trying to keep on the task at hand.
"We're close." Matt replied as he continued leading you three through the forest to a clearing that had a mound of dirt in the center of it, you could hear insects buzzing and humming all around you which was really abnormal. "I've been keeping track of insect populations. It's, um, part of an AP science class."
"You two are like peas in a pod." Dean commented gesturing to Sam and Matt.
"What's been happening?" Sam asked as he looked at Matt.
"Uh, a lot. I mean, from bees to earthworms, uh, beetles...you name it. It's like they're congregating here." Matt explained.
"Why?" Dean asked looking over at Matt.
"I don't know." Matt replied as he shrugged his shoulders.
"What's that." Sam asked looking over at the mound. You three and Matt walked over to the mound to check it out, there was a pile of worms on top of the mound. Dean tried to step on them when his foot almost fell into a hole that was hidden beneath the worms. Then Dean grabbed a stick and poked inside the hole until he jabbed into something hard.
"There's something down there." Dean said as he looked up at you and Sam. Then he reached into the hole to try and pull out whatever it was that he found. "Ugh. Come on, come on!" Dean groaned as he pulled out an old human skull.
Sam made an appointment for you guys to get the skulls examined at the local university. Sam parked the car about a block away so you guys could walk the rest of the way there. You pulled the skulls out of the backseat next to you so Sam could cover them up with his jacket. "So a bunch of skeletons in an unmarked grave." Sam stated.
"Yeah. Could be this is a haunting. Pissed-off spirits...some unfinished business?" Dean suggested as the three of you walked across the small park with Sam carrying the box of skulls.
"Yeah, maybe." Sam agreed. "The question is, why bugs? And why now?"
"Uh, that's two questions." Dean commented. "Hey, so with that kid back there...how you could you tell him to just ditch his family like that?"
"Just, uh...I know what the kid's going through." Sam answered.
"How about telling him to respect his old man? How's that for advice?" Dean asked.
"Dean, come on." Sam scoffed as he stopped to look at Dean. "This isn't about his old man. You think I didn't respect Dad. That's what this is about."
"Let's forget it. Sorry I brought it up." Dean mumbled as he turned to walk away.
"I respected him. But no matter what I did...it was never good enough." Sam retorted.
"So, what are you saying? Dad, was disappointed in you?'' Dean asked.
"Was?" Sam asked as he scoffed. "Is. Always has been."
"Why would you think that?" Dean asked.
"Because I didn't wanna bowhunt. Or hustle pool. Because I wanted to go to school and live my life. Which, in our whacked-out family made me the freak." Sam explained.
"Yeah, you were kinda like the blond chick inTheMunsters." Dean agreed.
"Dean...you know what most dads are when their kids score a full ride? Proud. Most dads don't toss their kids outta the house." Sam stated.
"I remember that fight. In, fact I seem to recall a few choice phrases coming out of your mouth." Dean said recalling that fight.
"You know...truth is, when we finally do find dad...I don't know if he's even gonna wanna see me." Sam said.
"Sam, dad was never disappointed in you. Never. He was scared." Dean explained.
"What are you talking about?" Sam asked in disbelief.
"He was afraid of what could've happened to you if he wasn't around. But even when you two weren't talking...he used to swing by Stanford whenever he could. Keep an eye on you. Make sure you were safe." Dean explained.
"What?" Sam asked.
"Yeah." Dean muttered as he looked off into the distance.
"Why didn't he tell me any of that?" Sam asked.
"Well, it's a two-way street, dude. You could've picked up the phone. Come on. We're gonna be late for our appointment." Dean stated as he walked away.
"I'm sure your dad was proud of you, Sam. He was probably being over-protective after what happened to your mom." you suggested trying to comfort Sam.
"Yeah, maybe." Sam said mumbled as he followed behind Dean.
Once you guys made it into the building you found the office of the professor who Sam made the appointment with. "So you three are students?" The professor asked as he took the box of skulls from Sam.
"Yeah. Yeah. Uh, we're in your class. Anthro 101?" Sam explained.
"Oh, yeah." The man said setting the box down.
"So, what about the bones, professor?" Dean asked pointing to the box of bones.
''This is quite an interesting find you've made. I'd say they're about one hundred-seventy years old, give or take. The time frame and the geography heavily suggest Native American." The professor explained.
"Were there any tribes or reservations on that land?" Sam asked.
"Not according to the historical record. But...the, uh, relocation of native peoples was quite common at that time." The professor replied.
"Right." Sam nodded. "Well..are there any local legends? Oral histories about the area?" Sam asked.
"Well...You know, there's a-There's a Euchee tribe in Sapula. It's about sixty miles from here. Someone out there might know the truth." The professor suggested.
"All right." Dean said as he nodded his head and looked at Sam and you.
You guys made your way to Sapula where the tribe lived as Dean drove up he asked one of a man for directions and he pointed behind him. You guys parked and walked into a small beat up diner where you saw what looked like someone from the Euchee tribe sitting at a table playing with a deck of cards.
"Joe White Tree?" Sam asked as you three walked up to him. "We'd like to ask you a few questions, if that's all right."
"We're students from the university." Dean stated.
"No, you're not." Joe said. "You're lying."
"Um...Well, truth is-" Dean started to say.
"You know who starts a sentence with "truth is"?" Joe interrupted. "Liars." There was a awkward silence between everyone.
"Have you heard of Oasis Plains? It's a housing development near the Atoka Valley." you asked speaking up.
"I like her, she's not a liar." Joe stated Dean rolled his eyes and wiped his face. "I know the area."
"What can you tell us about the history there?" you asked.
"Why do you wanna know?" Joe asked.
"Something...Something bad...is happening in Oasis Plains. We think it might have something to do with some old bones we found down there." you explained. "Native American bones."
"I'll tell you what my grandfather told me. What his grandfather told him. Two hundred years ago, a band of my ancestors lived in that valley. One day, the American cavalry came to relocate them. They were resistant. The cavalry, impatient. As my grandfather put it: "On the night the moon and the sun share the sky as equals, the cavalry first raided our village." They murdered...raped. The next day, the cavalry came again. And the next and the next. And on the sixth night, the cavalry came one last time. And by the time the sun rose every man, woman and child still in the village was dead. They say on the sixth night, as the chief of the village lay dying, he whispered to the heavens...that no white man would ever tarnish this land again. Nature would rise up and protect the valley. And it would bring as many days of misery and death to the white man as the cavalry had brought upon his people." Joe explained.
"Insects." Dean mumbled. "Sounds like nature to me. Six days."
"And on the night of the sixth day...none would survive."Joe stated.
Once you and the brothers were done talking to Joe you three left the diner.''When did the gas-company man die?" Sam asked.
"Uh...Let's see. We got here Tuesday. So Friday the 20th." Dean answered.
"March 20th." Sam mumbled. "That's in the spring equinox."
"The night the sun and the moon share the sky as equals." Dean stated.
"Huh," Sam muttered under his breath. "So every year about this time, anybody in Oasis Plains is in danger. Larry built his neighborhood on cursed land."
"And on the sixth night, which is tonight. Everyone in Oasis Plains is gonna die." you pointed out.
"If we don't do something, Larry's family will be dead by sunrise." Sam said as you guys reached the Impala. "So how do we break a curse?"
"You don't break a curse. You get out of its way. We gotta get those people out now." Dean replied as you got in the car.
By the time you guys got within reach to Oasis Plain it was already way past dark. Dean was flying down the road since time was against you. "Yes, Mr. Pike. There's a mainline gas leak in your area. Well, it'sfairlyextensive. I don't wanna alarm you, but we need your family out of the vicinity for at least twelve hours or so, just to be safe. Travis Weaver. I work for, uh, Oklahoma Gas and Power. Uh..." Dean said on the phone to Larry trying to get him to take his family away from Oasis Plains.
"Ugh. Gimme the phone." Sam said as he took the phone from Dean. "Matt, it's Sam. Matt, just listen. You have to get your family out of that house now. Okay? Because something's coming. Yeah. A lot more. You gotta make him listen, okay?" Sam explained as he was on the phone with Matt.
"Gimme the phone. Gimme the phone. Matt. Under no circumstances are you to tell them the truth. He'll just think you're nuts. Say you have a sharp pain in your side, and you gotta go to the hospital, okay?" Dean said Matt after he took the phone from Sam. ""Make him listen." What are you thinking?" Dean asked Sam after he hung up the phone.
When you finally arrived at Larry's house you saw the lights on and the cars still in the driveway. "Damn it. They're still here. Come on." Dean said as he shut the engine off and got out of the car. As you guys jogged up to the front door Larry came bursting put with an angry look on his face.
"Get off my property before I call the cops!" Larry yelled as he pointed his finger at Dean.
"Mr. Pike. Listen-" Sam started to say.
"Dad. They're just trying to help." Matt explained from behind Larry.
"Get in the house!" Larry yelled at Matt as he pointed his finger at Matt.
"Sorry. I told him the truth." Matt said.
"We had a plan. What happened to the plan?" Dean asked.
"Look. It's twelve a.m. They are coming any minute now." you reasoned. "You need to get your family and go. Before it's too late."
"Yeah, you mean, before the biblical swarm?" Larry retorted.
"Larry, what do you think really happened to that realtor? Huh, and the gas-company guy. You don't think something weird is going on around here?" Dean asked.
"Look, I don't know who you are, but you're crazy." Larry stated. "You come near my boy or my family again, and we're gonna have a problem."
"Oh, hate to be a downer, but we got a problem right now." Dean said.
"Dad, they're right." Matt agreed. "We're in danger."
"Matt, get inside! Now!" Larry yelled back at Matt.
"No! Why won't you listen to me?" Matt asked.
"Because this is crazy! It doesn't make any sense!" Larry yelled.
"Look, this land is cursed. People have died here. Are you gonna really take that risk with your family?" Sam asked.
"Wait." you said as you could hear a lot of buzzing coming your away. "You hear that?"
"What the hell?" Larry wondered as the others stopped to listen you all noticed a lot of activity around the bug zapper hanging on their front porch.
"Ir's time to go. Larry, get your wife." Dean said.
"Yeah." Larry as he was about to go into the house.
"Guys?" Matt said as he drew your attention to the hundreds, maybe even thousands of bugs flying your way.
"Oh, my God." Larry said in shock.
"Um, Sam, Dean..." you mumbled looking to the brothers for a plan.
"We'll never make it." Sam stated.
"Everybody in the house. In the house! Go!" Dean yelled as you all ran into the house as quick as you could.
"Is there anyone else in the neighborhood?" Sam asked Larry as Dean closed the door.
"No, it's just us." Larry responded.
"Honey, what's happening?" Joanie asked as she walked into the room. "What's that noise?"
"Call 911." Larry told Joanie. "Joanie!"
"Okay." She said heading for the phone.
"I need towels." Dean said running up to Larry.
"Uh, the closet." Larry said as he showed Dean where the closet was.
"We gotta lock this place up." Sam said as he grabbed Matt. "Doors, windows, the fireplace, everything." You followed Sam and Matt to help them seal the house off from the bugs.
"Phones are dead." you heard Joanie say as you went an upstairs. As you were helping Sam and Matt the power to the house went dead. When the power went out you, Sam and Matt joined the others downstairs, you watched as the bugs covered all of the windows up.
"So, what do we do now?" Larry asked looking at you three for help.
"We try to outlast it." Sam answered. "Hopefully the curse will end at sunrise."
""Hopefully"?" Larry repeated. You all saw Dean come back into the foyer with insecticide.
"Bug spray?" Joanie questioned.
"Trust me." Dean said. Suddenly you heard creaking behind you causing you all to turn around.
"What is that?" Matt asked. The creaking was coming from the fireplace, Sam and Dean walked closer to it to check it out.
"The flue." Sam muttered.
"All right. I think everybody needs to get upstairs." Dean suggested when you heard long banging coming from the fireplace and swarms of bugs flew into the house and attacked all of you. You heard Joanie screaming and Larry crying out as he tried to shield Matt. Then Dean sprayed the insecticide creating a handmade flamethrower. "Everybody upstairs now go, go ,go, go!" You gathered Larry, Matt, and Joanie and pushed them upstairs with Sam behind you and Dean trailing behind trying to hold off the bugs. "Hurry!" Once upstairs Larry pulled down the ladder to the attic.
"Go, go go! Go! Matt, hurry!" Larry yelled as he had Matt and Joanie climb up first. Then Larry climbed up with you, Sam, and Dean after them. Dean held off the bugs as Sam worked on pulling up the ladder and closing the attic door.
"Come on!" Dean yelled as Sam closed the door.
Everyone was breathing heavily when you heard noise coming from the roof. "Oh, God. What's that?" Joanie cried out as you all looked up.
"Something's eating through the wood." Dean explained as he and Sam got a closer look at the hole in the ceiling.
"Termites." Matt said as he and his parents were huddled in a corner of the room.
"All right. Everybody get back." Dean suggested. "Get back! Get back! Get back!" Dean yelled waving for them to get as far back as they could. As the termites chewed through the roof a piece fell down giving them access to the attic. Dean using the insecticide again, but there were too many bugs. Sam grabbed some metal sheeting to cover up the hole, but he needed something to keep it in place. So, you grabbed a two by four and placed it between the roof and the floor to keep the sheeting in place. Then another hole was created as you all could feel the bugs nipping and biting at your skin. Sam went over to protect the family while you and Dean tried keeping the bugs at bay. The two by four fell causing the metal sheeting to fall, but you went over and held it over the hole to keep the first hole blocked off the best you could. You flinched and groaned in pain as the bugs remaining kept biting at you. After what seems like forever daylight came and the bugs left.
Before leaving for good you guys wanted to check on Larry, Joanie, and Matt. As Dean pulled up to their house you noticed a moving truck parked outside their house with Larry loading stuff into it. "What, no goodbye?" Dean asked as you three walked up to Larry.
"Good timing. Another hour and we'd have been gone." Larry replied as he shook Dean's hand.
"For good?" Sam wondered as he shook Larry's hand.
"Yeah. The, uh, development's on hold while the government investigates those bones you found. But I'm gonna make damn sure no one lives here again."
"You don't seem too upset about it." you pointed out.
"Well, this has been the biggest financial disaster of my career. but...somehow...I really don't care." Larry explained as he smiled and looked at Matt who was help move boxes out of the house. Sam walked over to talk to Matt one last time while you stayed with Dean and Larry. Then Larry went to talk to Matt and Sam joined you and Dean.
"I wanna find dad." Sam stated.
"Yeah, me too." Dean agreed.
"Yeah, but I just...I wanna apologize to him." Sam explained.
"For what?" Dean asked.
"All the things I said to him." Sam said. "He was just doing the best he could."
"Well, don't worry. We'll find him." Dean said. "And you'll apologize. And then within five minutes, you guys will be at each other's throats."
"Yeah, probably," Sam agreed as he laughed.
"Well we won't find him here, so we better hit the road." You said from inside the car. The boys chuckled as they joined you in the car and Dean drove away.
