Brendon is proud of getting his first Pokémon.

It makes him feel ready to meet the gym leader's kid. He's excited about having a neighbor.

Maybe a best friend. Maybe a Rival!

It would be nice to have another boy around besides his little brother.

He is disappointed in the reality that the gym leader's kid is a girl. He wanted a rival. He probably shouldn't have voiced his disappointment in her gender out loud. She has a really scary mean- look.

And she's a gym leader's kid. Maybe she will make a good rival. He hopes. He had some pretty high expectations.

He offers to catch her a Pokémon, but that doesn't lessen her mean look. He then quickly makes an excuse up about his dad, and looks away.

Maybe she will leave, and the effect will dissipate, so he can move his legs again.

And clearly he has to do some hard thinking about how to avoid putting his foot into his mouth again.
