How could we know, the ride would turn out bad…

Sara and Jim filled Russell in on what had them both so spooked when the second call came in, it was the address of the townhouse where Sara and Gil lived when they were first married.

"RUSSELL! We found something!" Bobby's familiar drawl preceded him into the marquee, another plastic evidence bag dangling from his fingers, the firearms technician drafted in as evidence runner between the scene and PD. "Looks like some sort of fancy key…" he added, handing over the bag for Russell to look over.

"There's a couple of letters embossed into the metal, can't quite make them out though…" Russell handed the bag off to Sara. "Think your wunderkind will be able to get anything off this?"

"Depends whether they've managed to work out how to use their new toys yet," Sara replied with a wry grin, looking over her shoulder to where the mobile lab was lit up and the doors thrown open. "Let's head over and take a look." With Bobby in tow, the two supervisors and Brass walked over to the mobile lab, spotting David Hodges, Henry Andrews and Wendy Simms already moving about inside, with Mandy Webster and Greg Sanders perched on stools watching on. "Hey guys, good work on the envelope…"

Henry looked up with a faint blush, giving a slight nod in acceptance for the praise. "Thanks, I was about to head home after catching a late movie and remembered that I hadn't stocked up on swabs for my kit; I was only a few blocks away when we got the call to come in so I was first on scene."

"Have anything else for us, yet?" Greg asked, although he'd been out in the field for a few years now, he still sometimes missed being back in the lab, and he knew that both David and Henry enjoyed their split time as well.

"Actually, yeah…" Bobby said, "Morgan found what she's thinking is some sort of key, near the top of the stairs…the ones leading down into the lab; she figured it flew out of the package from reception…it got lodged in the wall." Sara handed the envelope over to Greg who turned it over in his hands as he peered down at the engraving.

"Yeah, we might be able to restore the marks with some ammonium persulphate; we'll give it a wipe with some acetone first and then apply a little heat…" Greg glanced up at Hodges who nodded in confirmation. "Yeah, leave it with us and we should have something to confirm in about an hour or two."

"That's great," Russell replied, pulling out the first envelope and passing it across to Mandy. "Think you might be able to pull some prints from this, Mandy?"

"I don't know…" the fingerprint analyst pulled on her glasses and tilted the envelope so that she could look over all of the surface angles, "it's pretty burnt up but I'll see what I can do."

"That's all we can ask," Sara said, glancing down at her watch and noting the time, "the other lab should be arriving any time now, I'll work on trying to pull techs from the other shifts to get things set up over there…we may be looking at multiple scenes so we need to ensure that we keep the evidence separated. You guys all good here for the time being?"

"Yes, boss…" came the response from multiple voices, and the supervisors and Bobby chuckled at the response, knowing that Greg was likely the instigator as he was the most senior investigator on Sara's team and had often jokingly made that response when Gil Grissom had been the supervisor on Grave. Glancing over to see Sara's reaction, Bobby was surprised to see a fond smile and rueful look on Sara's face rather than the pinched look that he often saw whenever something reminded her of her ex-husband.

"Get back to work, slackers, otherwise no pizza for lunch!"

"On it, boss."

"Right away, boss."

A few hours later, Jim called Sara out of the mobile lab. "Cookie, Russell just called in from the Western Circle explosion…another note was found."

"What did it say, Jim?"

"Russell says this one's a bit of a jumble, he doesn't know what it's trying to reference…" Pulling out his notepad, Jim read off what Russell had dictated; "'I have been to seek a wife; she was the joy of his life…' then there's a bit missing and it goes on to say 'Billy Boy, he's a young man that doesn't have a mother…'"

"Oh, God!" Sara pulled away from Jim and fumbled for her cell, fingers racing across the keys as she frantically sent off a text to Betty, pacing and mumbling under her breath. "Come on, Betty, text me back…"

"Cookie…?"

"It's an old song called 'Billy Boy', the lyrics have been changed as it should say 'she's a young girl and cannot leave her mother'," Sara replied, cursing when her phone remained silent. "Jim, I need you to take me over to my place, Betty's not answering my text and she always responds."

"I can have a patrol car sent over within minutes," Jim argued, even as he led the way over to where his car sat in the parking lot. "I still don't understand what the song has to do with either you or Betty though."

"That's because I never told you why Betty decided to move in with me after the divorce," Sara replied, glancing over at the parking lot and letting out a sigh as she saw a familiar SUV being stopped at the gate. "But I guess you're about to find out…" Sara veered away from Jim's side and jogged over to where Betty was talking slowly to the patrol officer at the gate.

"I'm sorry, Ma'am but this is a secure area, I can't let you through."

"It's okay, Sam, she's with me, let her through…" Sara called out, approaching the SUV with a panting Jim at her side. "You had me worried, Mom…I texted you and you didn't respond."

-I was driving, dear, I thought you might be hungry so I stopped to pick up breakfast…I hope I brought enough- Betty looked worried, so Sara patted her arm gently.

"Thanks, Mom, but you didn't have to…I'll tell you all about when we get over to the lab," Sara promised, she glanced over at Jim who was trying to peer inside the tinted windows on the back of the SUV. "Hey, Jim, Betty's brought over breakfast for the crew, want a lift back?"

"Breakfast? Sure, I'll take a ride," Jim agreed, placing his hand on the rear door.

"Hop in the front, there's more room there…I'll sit in back," Sara offered, and Jim nodded before sliding into the front seat and nodding a greeting at Betty. He didn't see Sara climbing into the back, but he certainly heard the familiar chuckle when her presence was recognised to the third passenger of the vehicle.

"Ma!"

"There's my little guy! Have you been good for Nana?"

"Huh?" Jim swivelled around in his seat so fast that he almost gave himself whiplash, not daring to believe his eyes as he saw a chubby cheeked little boy with a dimpled chin reaching out with grabby hands in order to get to Sara.

"Ma…!"

"I'll let you out in a minute, sweetheart," Sara promised, leaning over to tap Betty on the shoulder and pointing over to where the two large, Navy coloured lab trucks were set up. "Over there, Mom, there should be a big enough space near to where my truck is parked up." Betty nodded and started the engine, smoothly pulling away to steer the SUV in the direction Sara indicated, swiftly reversing into place before switching off the engine and climbing out of the vehicle. Jim and Sara exited, Jim calling out to the mobile van.

"Guys…can you come outside for a second, please?" The three men glanced out of the open doorway, and spotted the open trunk with piles of pink pastry boxes stacked inside.

"Ooh, breakfast pastries, nice!" Greg rubbed his hands together gleefully, and started looking around for somewhere to set up. He spotted a couple of folded up tables in one of the unused marquees. Sara followed Greg's gaze and nodded in agreement.

"That should work; Henry, David…if you could start grabbing the boxes from the trunk?" Sara suggested, reaching in and pulling out several large coffee urns and passing them over to Greg before walking back around to the rear passenger door and reaching inside. All three investigators stopped in their tracks as Sara emerged with a blond-haired, blue-eyed baby in her arms, jostling him up and down in her arms and making him let out a throaty chuckle. "Um…everyone…this is my son…William."

"The Billy Boy in the second note?" Jim guessed, letting out a sigh as he placed a hand on Sara's shoulder and lightly squeezing. "Guess I can understand why you were so worried, I'm sorry, cookie."

-Note, what note? What aren't you telling me, Sara? - Betty signed urgently, tapping her foot impatiently when Sara just cradled William a little closer to her side and breathed in his sweet baby scented skin.

"There was a note found during the lab explosion, it mentioned my name; then there was a second explosion at our old townhouse along with another note – this one had parts taken from William's lullaby…only they changed some of the lyrics," Sara spoke clearly, enunciating the words enough so that Betty could follow along without the need for signs.

"We think Sara might be the target for the two explosions…she was trying to contact you to let you know to be careful," Jim added, turning to look directly at Betty as he spoke, "so far, it's the lab and Sara's old house. Hodges, have we got anything from the key yet?"

"Yes, the chemical etching revealed three letters; L. H. K.; Mandy's running them through the databases as we speak."

"Heather…"
