Will Solace muttered under his breath as he held onto his work as he tiptoed away from the rest of his cabin mates as everyone marched to bed. Angry words were abound as many of his fellow demigods cursed Zeus for destroying the book. As he moved carefully he made sure to slip between the space between cabins to make his way to his hide-away. In the distance all could hear the yelling and trembles coming from the campfire as the king of the gods tried to defend himself from an upset Hestia.

Who knew the goddess of the hearth had a temper like that?

Thankfully Will was sure no one noticed his pocketing of a small book that fell out of his aunt's hunter Phoebe. He wasn't a child of Hermes but given the relationship between his dad and the gods of thieves children of the sun god had nimble fingers. Not to the level of their Hermes cousins, but close. Nimble fingers were needed to play music and do medical work after all. Making sure no one was around looking his way he took the book out to read the title again.

"Tales from the other side. I hope this is worth it." Will spoke aloud as he began to open up the book.

"Same here." Will jumped into the air and had to clamp down on his fist to stop himself from screaming. Whirling around he saw the annoyed look of Annabeth. She had her cap in hand being spun as she gave him a raised eyebrow look. "If you had a book why didn't you want to share it with the rest of the cabins and the hunt?"

Will hushed her. "Quiet! Do you think that after He destroyed the last book how it'll go down? We almost had a riot after the first person began to scream in rage."

"... Fair..." Annabeth had not considered that. And yet did he expect that to be the end of this? "I want to read that book with you."

"Are you crazy?"

"Either you let me read it with you of I am telling Chiron. Then he will tell everyone else in the camp and then you will have to face the anger of the camp and hunters over you hogging the story as we wait on another copy being delivered to us."

Will gasped at Annabeth's smug face. "You wouldn't."

"I would."

Even without Apollo's power over truth Will could tell that she would. He cursed and quickly looked around before pulling her closer.

"Fine. You can read the book with me. But not a word to anyone else." Will emphasized his words with a squeeze of her shoulders. "I don't even know if any of that is here is cannon or not."

She rolled her eyes. "Fine by me. But can we get to the first chapter? It's a drag that we haven't started yet. By the fates even if it hasn't been only ten minutes I would swear it's been years since we got anther chapter of the book."

Will smirked and withheld a laugh. Letting her go, Will pointed with his head to a spot that was hidden from sight behind the shed. Grinning, both demigods made their wa over with their prize. While shaded from view, there was just enough light to allow them to read the font of the book without needing a source of light that could alert anyone of where they are. But just in case Will placed his left hand over Annabeth's eyes.

"What are you doing?"

"Quite. Also, be still. I need to focus." Will took a deep breath in and covered his own eyes with his right. A soft glow flared up for a moment before fading away. Panting he removed his hands and reached to take out the book. "It won't last fore more than an hour, two tops."

Annabeth blinked her eyes and looked around. "Wow."

Instead of a dimly lit area just a few moments before Annabeth found herself seeing the surrounding area like it was lit in light of day. Will smirked, enjoying the daughter of Athena's reaction. Taking out the book he sat down and lean against the shed.

"Apollo is the god of light and while many think of the daytime as his domain, there is still light at night." He explained to Annabeth who nodded dumbly. "Usually I use this to read medical texts in the cabin during lights out. A handy trick, not useful when underground as it uses natural light. No clue if the hunters have a version related to Artemis given she is the goddess of the moon..."

Will shook his head. It did not matter right now. Carefully opening up the book he began with chapter one.

Chapter one

Artemis shook her head as boy, Naruto she corrected herself, moved about his apartment getting ready for... something. Having no clue where she was she tried to piece together a general location. However the more she say the more worried she became over the living conditions of her host. In her rush to find a place of safety to regain her strength Artemis had paid no mind to the apartment conditions but as she paid more attention it became clear that Naruto was living in poverty.

Posters covered fading and cracking wallpaper while the smell of trash blew in from below the window. Water pipes rattled and groaned before delivering at least clean-ish looking water after Naruto smacked a spot that was wrapped in bandages. Artemis covered her face with her hands as she spotted a rat run across the counter when Naruto was focused on the refrigerator to find what looked like stale bread and eggs.

'Maybe you should go hunting.' Artemis suggested, not just because it would be far healthier and fresher than he was eating but because maybe if he interacted with her domains enough she might escape the chains using her own power.

"I'm not listening to you."

'Did you forget that you wanted to avoid the asylum?' Artemis asked. Naruto shook his head making her groan. It was clear this boy was a few arrows short of a full quiver if he had forgotten she could not see the movement. 'Use your words and think them boy.'

Naruto grunted and stuffed his face with his food. 'So... what do I call you?'

Artemis had to stop herself from saying don't speak with your mouthful. It was rather redundant given he wasn't using his mouth to speak. 'I am known by many names and titles. And how did you already forget what my name is?!'

Naruto did not respond making Artemis wince. She needed the boy's help in order to escape and scaring the boy would lead to... issues. The last thing she wanted to do was harm the boy as it was her own actions that hand led to him becoming stuck with her. It had been sometime since she had to spend prolong time with a boy, usually she turned them into small prey animals with the rare few becoming members of the hunt themselves. Artemis had to take a deep in. Perhaps if she treated him like a scared wolf pup he might grow and come to see her as not a threat but as a protector.

Artemis smiled. Protector. Yes, she was indeed a protector of children so this plan was for the best. It would take time but she could wait. He was a human, she a goddess. Maybe once she was free and with her guidance Naruto could become a mortal hero of legend, a champion of hers. Yes, he could be a find champion to help her. Only now, how to establish trust and and get him to accept her?

'Artemis, the goddess of the moon and the immortal huntress.'

Naruto rolled his eyes. 'Yeah right. What sort of name is Artemis?'

'One that hold power and respect.' Artemis growled.

'Sure. Whatever you say voice in my head.' Artemis began to yell as Naruto focused on his needs for today. It was field training day at the academy and he had to show he had all the skills. Last time he had forgotten and had slept in, so Iruma sensei had warned him that if he was late again he would spend the entire month's weekends with him going through the entire thing. Without any ramen for Naruto! Naruto shivered at the idea of not eating the food of the gods. Glancing up at the clock he paled. "Oh shit I'm late!"

Artemis watched as Naruto scrambled back to the bedroom. Deciding to give him some space to change she focused on the manacle and chain holding her to the rock in Naruto's mindscape. Tugging at it once more she nodded to herself. Yep, still tight on her wrist. Stretching out she look over to the massive pillar gate with a piece of paper in the middle of it. Soft rumbling in the dark beyond the gate told her that the beast was asleep. Now that she was awake and of a more clear mind she took note of the design.

Unlike many of her family, she and Apollo along with Athena had invested interest in cultures other than the west. For her it was more for the hunt as each culture and their own hunting styles, prey and tools. Apollo's reasoning she was sure was based on his flings but as for Athena? Artemis looked carefully at the pillars. She could hear the talks that her sister had about how pillars where made by different cultures. Egyptian, Greek, Native American, Persian... Japanese.

She smiled. Japanese. Of course, she was an idiot. Her host's name was Naruto, a word in Japanese. The pillars were styled after the temples of Japan and the giant fox? Artemis rubbed her hands together. While the west and the east had their... differences, she was sure that she must be somewhere in Japan. Once she recovered a acceptable portion of her power she could contact her hunters to help her get her host to Olympus. Apollo and Hephaestus along with Hecate could help her free herself from the boy and she would see that her father gave him a reward along with her own for his unwilling aid.

With that spark of hope she went back to watching Naruto, who by this time was running down a busy street. As he ran Artemis got more and more confused and worried. This did not make any since. While she hadn't explored much of Japan do to the war and their gods having limited contact with the Greeks, shouldn't there be more influences from the American mortals? It was as if she had landed in a rural backwater.

'Boy... Naruto, where are we?' Artemis pressed as she looked to see several men and women with metal plates tied to their heads jumping from rooftop to rooftop.

'Konohagakure.' Naruto replied as he slipped between a space between two buildings. 'Shouldn't you know that miss goddess?'

'... In case you were unaware I am rolling my eyes right now.' Artemis said with a flat tone of voice. 'Village hidden in the leaves. Not very fitting for an urban setting with not that many trees.'

Unaware of Artemis's thoughts of the name of his home, Naruto suppressed a yawn that threatened to come out. He had gotten good sleep so why did he feel tired right now? Turning a corner he heard a gasp as the Hokage mountain came into view with the academy below.

'I know, the monument is a sight.' Naruto said to Artemis as he noticed Kiba and Choji in the distance. 'One day I will be Hokage and my face will be up there and everyone will have to acknowledge me!'

But Artemis focus was on the mountain face. Four stone carvings stood out as if mocking her. It was like mt. Rushmore but not, nothing like anything she had ever seen before. It was clear each of the men, she was sure they were men, were of great importance but if she had never heard of them...

'Naruto...' Artemtis asked slowly. 'Just what is this place?'

Naruto blinked. He had not expected that. 'A village of ninja? Why do you ask?'

Ok, she could accept that a stretch. 'And the year?'

'Year?' Naruto asked confused. 'Why do you want to know the year?'

'Humor me please, what year is it?'

'Um... maybe 73 AW I think. Yeah, it's 73 years after the endless war. Man, to think I almost forgot that. Thanks Artemis-san!' Said Naruto, happy to have helped and recall a study question to the history of the village.

Artemis collapsed on her rock. As Apollo liked to say, she wasn't in Kansa anymore.
