Disclaimer: Trigger Warning! I do not own The Mr. Men Show or any of its characters, but I do own Elizabeth and the idea for this story.
"You can escape from here," the Mr. Man went on as she walked up. "But you need to get out of here before-"
He was interrupted by angry yelling coming from upstairs.
The girl turned back to the light green Mr. Man just in time to see him throw the window open before he picked her up, surprising her. She didn't have time to object as he shoved her through it, and she just barely kept back a yelp when her sides painfully rubbed against the edges of the window.
The next thing she knew, she was on her hands and knees outside in the soft grass. She jerked around to see him looking at her with eyes that shone with sadness and regret. "Why?" she whispered.
He didn't answer her question, though, only reached his hand out and dropped a piece of paper in front of her. "I'll meet you as soon as I can," he promised, closing the window and disappearing from sight before she had time to say anything.
The girl laid on her stomach to look into the basement, just able to catch a glimpse of his light green skin as he stopped in the middle of the room. A moment later she heard the door opening and that was followed by an angry voice. "Nobody's here!"
"T-They must have left," replied Mr. Nosy, his voice shaking.
Mr. Small let out an annoyed snout, and all was silent for a moment until he demanded, "Where is she?"
Once more it was quiet, and she was wondering what was happening when suddenly Mr. Nosy stumbled into her view, falling to the ground. He was rubbing his cheek; she noticed that he was crying by the way his body trembled.
"Traitor!" Mr. Small appeared at his friend's side, his eyes blazing with rage. Then he crouched down beside Mr. Nosy, whispering something to him that Elizabeth was unable to hear. A second later he turned his back on the light green Mr. Man, storming away, and the sound of the door being slammed shut announced that he had left.
Elizabeth tried to open the window but it wouldn't budge no matter what she did. She looked back into the basement to see the Mr. Man still on the floor, staring up at her and giving her gestures that she didn't understand. As she was trying to think of a way to help him, the sound of footsteps made her jerk her head up to see Mr. Small round the side of the house, coming to a halt when he saw the girl crouching in the grass.
"Elizabeth," he started in an angry tone, but he took a deep breath and when he spoke again, his voice was calm, sounding like his character on the show. "Elizabeth, come back inside."
The girl stumbled to her feet, about to make a run for it, when suddenly she noticed the paper that Mr. Nosy had dropped. She reached down to get it, noticing that Mr. Small's eyes narrowed, but he didn't try to stop her.
Confused, she straightened back up and stared down at him.
"You've had your fun," the small Mr. Man told her, taking a step toward her, but when she backed up, he froze. "Now it's time to get back inside."
"No!" the girl replied loudly which caused the Mr. Man to hiss at her, "Be quiet!" It was then that she realized that he didn't want to draw attention to this scene; that was why he wasn't doing anything too extreme. Elizabeth shouted, "Get away from me!"
The Mr. Man looked all around them. "Shut up, you stupid human!" he demanded in a whisper that was full of anger.
Elizabeth was enjoying watching his eyes jerk from side to side, worried that someone would see them, though she knew that she had to get away while she still had the chance to so she didn't find herself locked up in that cage again. As quick as she could, she turned on her heels and ran away from the big observatory. She could hear her ex-boyfriend calling after her, but she didn't dare to stop until she passed a few houses, and even then she kept glancing over her shoulder in fear of him chasing her.
At last she paused, out of breath, and decided to take a look at the piece of paper. She unfolded it and scanned it over. The light green Mr. Man wanted her to go to one of their friend's house, even giving her directions, and instructed her to wait for him to get there to know what she needs to do next.
Lowering the paper, she glanced around, wondering where she was. The directions were supposed to take her straight there from the observatory, but since she had to run away, she couldn't use it to find her way.
Maybe I should ask someone? she realized, turning her feet to head to the sidewalk. As she walked, she looked at her surroundings, eyes huge in amazement. Moments of the show played in her mind when she saw places that had appeared on episodes.
She was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't even realize anyone else was near her until she ran into them and fell to the ground. Groaning, she rubbed her pounding head, looking up when she heard a familiar moan.
Mr. Bump! Instantly she felt guilty about running into one of her favorite characters. She stumbled to her feet and stretched out her hand to him, murmuring an apology.
At first the blue Mr. Man just stared at her, seeming to forget about the pain, and then he allowed her to help him back up.
"I hope you're okay," the human said as she worriedly looked him over. Still he didn't speak, and she was starting to get uncomfortable under his stunned gaze.
Eventually she couldn't take the silence anymore, and she slipped past him, murmuring as she went, "Sorry again." She was scolding herself for messing up the first time ever meeting the accident-prone Mr. Man when she suddenly heard him calling her back.
"Who are you?" he asked, walking to her. "And where did you come from?"
She knew that was coming, but it still surprised her. Should she tell him? She didn't want to lie to him, but she also didn't want to cause a panic if the others of Dillydale found out the truth about their friends who lived in the big observatory. Somehow she had to avoid mentioning anything about them.
"My name is Elizabeth," she finally answered after she saw that he was getting suspicious of her when she took a while to say anything. "I'm from out of town. Do you know someone called Mr…..Scatterbrain?" she asked him like it wasn't common for her to say that name while in reality she could talk nonstop about the magenta Mr. Man.
It seemed like he was thinking about that for a few moments as if trying to decide if he should respond truthfully. At last he nodded and pointed in the opposite direction she had been heading. She said her thanks and was about to go the way he told her, but he slipped in front of her.
"I'll walk with you," he offered and fell in step with her after she nodded in agreement. A little way down the sidewalk, he spoke up again. "So how do you know Mr. Scatterbrain?" He glanced sideways at her.
The girl quickly thought of an answer, trying to remember everything the show revealed about the magenta Mr. Man. "We met in Onionville once," she explained, deciding to go with the detail about him that the scatterbrained character himself mentioned in the Night episode. She felt guilty for lying, but she knew that she couldn't tell him how she really came to this world.
"Onionville?" Mr. Bump echoed, and she was afraid that he wouldn't believe her. A second later, though, he only shrugged and looked back in front of him.
The two went quiet while they continued walking, and Elizabeth was glad that he didn't ask anymore questions. That moment of relief was ruined when the big observatory came into sight. She skidded to a halt, feeling her heart beat fast when she remembered what she just barely escaped.
"What's wrong?" Mr. Bump turned to her in surprise.
Elizabeth glanced around. "I-Is there another way to his house?" she stammered.
He must have heard the fear in her voice because his eyes went wide with shock. "This is the fastest way," he explained, quickly adding, "But if you really want to, we can go the long way."
"Yes please." She looked once more at the observatory before following the Mr. Man across the street where he entered another neighborhood. They walked for a long while, and right as the girl felt like she couldn't take another step, Mr. Bump stopped and pointed to a house which she instantly recognized as the magenta man's.
"Here we are," Mr. Bump announced.
The human glanced down at him. "Thank you for your help."
"Sure." The blue Mr. Man looked like he wanted to say something else, but instead he only turned and left the girl to stand alone in front of the house.
