Disclaimer: Trigger Warning! I do not own The Mr. Men Show or any of its characters, but I do own Elizabeth and the idea for this story.
For several minutes she stayed where she was, trying to think of how to introduce herself. She started walking to the door when suddenly she heard a voice behind her, and spun around, surprised to see the scatterbrained Mr. Man coming from the same direction Mr. Bump took to bring her here. There was a monkey padding next to him.
At first they didn't seem to notice her, but after a few more steps, they froze as their eyes landed on the human.
She looked down at the ground in embarrassment, shifting her feet nervously.
"Hello there." She glanced up at the friendly voice, and she saw Mr. Scatterbrain walking to her, stopping in front of her. "Who are you?"
"Elizabeth," she was able to say, adding, "I think Mr. Nosy talked to you about me staying with you."
The magenta Mr. Man seemed to go through his memories, finally nodding and exclaiming, "Oh yeah!" He passed her, his monkey following him, and he said over his shoulder, "You are welcome to stay here as long as you want."
Elizabeth stared after them, surprised that that went so well. She half expected him to question her just like Mr. Bump had, but instead he was more than willing to let a complete stranger stay with him. With a sigh of relief, she ran to catch up to the Mr. Man just as he entered his house. She wondered how long she'd have to stay here before she heard from Mr. Nosy.
Hopefully not long, she thought, wanting to know if he was okay.
Days passed with no sign of the light green Mr. Man. Elizabeth was worried about him. She hoped he was okay. She wondered how long she had to wait.
Right now the girl sat on the couch in the magenta Mr. Man's house, staring up at the ceiling, really wishing she hadn't forgotten her phone in her cage. She wondered what her family was doing and if they'd been looking for her. Even if she did have her phone, she wouldn't be able to text or call anyone, so she has no idea how her family or best friend or husband reacted to her disappearance. She sighed miserably.
"Are you okay?"
The familiar voice made her glance up to see Mr. Scatterbrain entering the living room with a couple of his penguins following him. He stopped next to the couch, smiling down at her.
"Yeah, I'm fine," she lied, avoiding looking at him. "Just thinking…" About my old life, she finished in her head, trying to hold back the tears.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door, but that was something Elizabeth was getting used to hearing. She wondered if this many people ever came to the scatterbrained Mr. Man's house in such a short time before
News of the girl spread quickly throughout the town because of Mr. Bump no doubt, and just about everyone in Dillydale has come to meet her since she was afraid of leaving in case she ran into her ex-boyfriend and he dragged her back to that cage. She was trying to think of someone who hasn't shown up yet when the voice she's been waiting to hear came from the front door after Mr. Scatterbrain answered it.
She jumped to her feet and ran over there, spotting the light green Mr. Man standing in front of his friend, and as soon as he saw her, he slipped past Mr. Scatterbrain and walked over to her.
Just seeing him made her eyes start to water. "I'm so glad you're okay!" she confessed, and she threw her arms around him before she could stop herself, adding as she started to sob, "I was beginning to think he did something awful to you."
He petted her back. "There's no need to worry about me," he insisted, taking a step away from her. He opened his mouth to continue, but then closed it again when Mr. Scatterbrain walked up, and the light green Mr. Man eyed him with uncertainty.
Seeming to notice this, Mr. Scatterbrain headed to another part of his house, calling over his shoulder, "I'll just leave you two alone to get caught up."
As soon as he was gone, Elizabeth turned back to her rescuer. "Are you sure you're okay?" she asked, looking him over, and for the first time she noticed he was covered with bruises. "What has he been doing to you?" she asked in a low voice, unable to talk any louder as shock overtook her.
He glanced away and closed his eyes. "He's upset that I let you go," he confessed, and his body started to tremble. But when he looked back at her, there was a calmness to him that surprised her. "But I can handle any punishment knowing that I helped someone else."
"But what about you?" she argued. "Someone needs to help you before he really hurts you."
The Mr. Man shook his head. "I'll be fine. He can't do anything without me."
His words sent a chill down her spine, but she realized that he was right. Without Mr. Nosy's muscles, Mr. Small would be forced to live like he used to so nobody found out about him, but he'd be unable to satisfy any of his disturbing urges.
With a sigh, she pushed her ex-boyfriend to the back of her mind. "So what now?" she whispered. The girl looked up at him, suddenly hopeful. "Can I go home? Do you know if my family is looking for me?"
"The only portal here is the one in our closet," he said slowly as he gave her an apologetic look.
She sighed, instantly knowing what he meant. "So I can never go home..." she murmured, turning her back to him and bowing her head as sadness washed over her.
"I'm sorry." Mr. Nosy put his hand on her shoulder. "I wish there was a way to get to it but not without running into Mr. Small, and if he catches you inside with no witnesses…" His voice trailed off, but she didn't turn to him. Finally he pulled away and she could hear his footsteps getting fainter. "I have to get back," he explained as he suddenly came to a halt. "Try to stay safe, okay?" After he finished talking, he opened the door and left.
Still Elizabeth didn't move from her spot. Tears started to roll out of her eyes. I'll never see any of my family or friends again. This made her cry even more. "I'll never see Jack again," she whispered, her legs suddenly collapsing under her.
Squeaking made her look up, and she saw the blurry outline of a penguin wobbling to her. It stopped in front of her. The girl wiped away her tears to see it staring up at her with worry filled eyes. Then it stretched out its flipper, putting it assuredly on her leg. But it didn't understand why she was so upset.
"Hey, what's wrong?"
Elizabeth lifted her head to see Mr. Scatterbrain halting when he got to her.
She sighed and gazed back down at the penguin. "I-It looks like I may be here longer than I thought," she confessed, more tears rolling down her face.
"Why are you so upset about that?" he asked in confusion. "Dillydale is the best place to stay!"
The girl stared at his blurry figure and then shook her head. "You don't understand," she murmured, playing with her fingers. "I don't belong here; I have family somewhere else."
He sat down next to her. "I know what it's like having a family member somewhere different," he told her, and she glanced at him in surprise until at last she remembered about the old show. "I send letters to my big sister and she sends some back," he went on. "Can't you do the same with your family?"
She shrugged and sighed deeply, wondering if it was even possible to send mail to another world. The only characters who seemed able to leave this world were... That's it! She jumped to her feet, surprising the Mr. Man and the penguin.
"Do you have some paper and a pen?" the girl asked Mr. Scatterbrain as he stumbled back to his feet, and she wasn't surprised when he started going through his pocket, pulling out the things she needed.
She ran over to the coffee table where she sat on the floor and began writing her letter. As she did this, the Mr. Man came walking up, stopping beside her, but when she didn't even acknowledge him, he left her alone in the living room.
She doubted her husband or any of her family would believe the things she was writing, but even if none of them did, she just hoped this letter would show them that she was fine. She wrote that she was going to get someone to drop it off and if they wanted to write her a letter, put it somewhere noticeable.
Finally, she finished by signing her name. Wanting to make sure that she didn't forget anything, she read it silently, and then reread it two more times. At last, she decided it was ready to be delivered.
I just hope it gets to my family, she thought as she started to fold the paper.
She stared down at it for a long time, before calling out to the scatterbrained Mr. Man, who appeared from the kitchen. "Yes?" he asked.
"Do you mind doing me a favor?" She turned to him, paper in hand, reaching out to give it to him, and he took it. "Can you give this to Mr. Nosy?" she asked, talking slowly so he'll hopefully understand and remember what to do. "Just please, whatever you do, please don't let Mr. Small see it, and, uh, don't look at it, please." She didn't like the idea of him getting too curious and reading the letter. She revealed everything the cartoons have done to her and she didn't want Mr. Scatterbrain to discover his closest friends' darkest secret.
It was clear that Mr. Scatterbrain was trying to pay attention, but soon a vacant look appeared in his eyes and Elizabeth frowned. She grabbed an extra sheet of paper and wrote down everything she just said and gave it to him. "If you forget, read this," she told him, pointing to the paper she just gave him.
He nodded and started toward the door, calling to one of his pets. The monkey appeared from the kitchen, holding a banana. After he peeled it back, he ate it in one bite before throwing the skin on the floor. Then he ran over to his owner. As they left, the Mr. Man said over his shoulder," You can count on me."
Elizabeth stared after him even when the door closed. I really hope you're right, she thought, climbing onto the couch and staring up at the ceiling.
