I do not own The Mr. Men Show or any of its characters, but I do own Elizabeth and the idea for this story.
Dark clouds were moving in. A storm was heading to Dillydale. But the two sets of Mr. Nosy and Mr. Small stood in front of the abandoned observatory. Mr. Small just suggested the Mr. Nosys switched places, and the other world Mr. Nosy had no idea how to feel about that.
He remembered telling Mr. Small that he couldn't live that life anymore, but could he honestly stay here and become friends with this world's Mr. Small? He glanced at the small man, who stared up at his former friend.
"You can't leave!" he begged him.
Nosy glared at him. "I can't stay here and have you use me again!"
"I won't! I promise! Please stay. I rather you here and we never speak to each other again, than for you to leave for good."
"He'll be here," Nosy said, gesturing to his counterpart.
Mr. Nosy shifted standing positions. He hadn't agreed to this. Although, how could he return with Mr. Small, knowing that he didn't want him there anymore? Even though they were the same character, it still hurt knowing that his friend prefers another version of him. He glanced at Mr. Small, who stood back, watching their counterparts discuss this.
"But he's not you!" Small said. Then paused and added," Okay, he is you, but he's not my best friend. You are."
"No, I'm not," Nosy snapped. "Not anymore. And if I go with the other Mr. Small, he won't try to sleep with me. I would rather be friends with someone who won't take advantage of me!"
Mr. Nosy couldn't go on watching this without saying something. "He won't try to sleep with you, but he'll boss you around. He won't let you share your opinions or ideas, and you'll be forced to play tricks on your friends." He glared at the small man.
Mr. Small stepped forward. "We already discussed that. He promised to listen and obey me, no matter what. Isn't that right?"
Nosy lowered his eyes and didn't answer.
His counterpart stared at him. "You want to be bossed around just to get away from someone who truly loves you?"
His world's Mr. Nosy snapped his head up. "I don't love him! I'd do anything to get away from him!"
Mr. Nosy frowned. He glanced from his best friend to his counterpart, and then looked at the other Mr. Nosy. He sighed. "Fine," he said.
"Fine?" Mr. Small echoed.
"I'll do the switch. I'll stay here while the other me goes with you."
Small whimpered, but Mr. Small eyed his friend warily. "Are you sure?" he asked. "You can't change your mind later. When we leave, we're not coming back. So you need to be hundred percent certain that you want to do this."
Mr. Nosy looked at him. Wasn't it his idea to do the switch? Then he saw the uncertainty in his eyes, and realized that he didn't really expect his friend to agree. He just wanted to scare him into thinking he could be replaced. It was another mind game, and Mr. Nosy was sick of it. He really didn't want to stay, but now he did. If it meant he could be free of Mr. Small and all his tricks.
"I'm sure," he said. He walked over to Small. "Come on, it won't be so bad. We can fix up the observatory and move back in. I'm not so bad once you get to know me." He playfully winked at him, and a slight smile formed at the corner of his mouth. But it vanished completely when Nosy snorted in disgust.
Mr. Small was silent. Then he looked up when thunder sounded in the distance. "Fine, whatever." He started toward the door. "Stay here then. Come on," he added to Nosy, who hesitated outside.
"Why do we have to go in there?" he asked.
"That's where the portal is," Mr. Small snapped. "You said you'll listen to me, so come on!"
Nosy sighed and slowly started following Mr. Small. Neither of them looked back at their former friends.
This is for the best, Mr. Nosy told himself. Even still, he wondered if he'll ever see his Mr. Small again. He turned away and looked down at Small. Before he could speak, thunder boomed and lightning flashed, and rain started pouring. Shivering, Mr. Nosy said," Let's find shelter."
Mr. Small glanced at the observatory one last time, before following Mr. Nosy. The light green Mr. Man didn't really know where he was going. The observatory was runned down, with many holes in the roof, so it wouldn't be a good place to shelter during a storm.
He felt a tap on his hip and he looked down to see Mr. Small gesturing to a neighborhood. Mr. Nosy turned and followed him. The small man took him to a house that he's never seen before. Without hesitating, the two of them opened the door and ran inside. Cold and wet, Mr. Nosy looked around the house. Who lived here?
As if he could read his thoughts, Mr. Small said," Mr. Nosy built this house after he left." He closed the door and turned the lights on. He sighed and walked over to the couch where he sat down.
Mr. Nosy followed him. "We can start to rebuild the observatory when the storm is over." He sat down, too, letting out a breath. He paused before murmuring," I'm sorry."
Mr. Small shook his head. "It's not your fault. It's mine." He threw himself backwards and closed his eyes.
For a few moments, Mr. Nosy was silent. Then he asked," Do you want me to stay? I'd understand if you wanted me to leave. After all, it's like you said, I'm not your friend."
Mr. Small opened his eyes and sat up. He reached over and patted his shoulder. "I think we can make this work. It'll take some getting used to, but maybe soon we won't even remember our friends. It would seem like we were always together." It was obvious he was trying to make the best of this, but there was a deep sadness beyond his words, and Mr. Nosy frowned, hoping one day it would be like they've always been friends, and neither of them will even remember that they were rejected by people who were supposed to be their best friends.
Mr. Small watched as the light green Mr. Man stumbled out of the portal. He regained his footing and looked around, eyes wide. He took a step forward, gazing around the room.
Rolling his eyes, Mr. Small left the bedroom. He heard footsteps behind him, but he didn't turn around. He was trying to appear calm, but he was furious that his plan hadn't worked. He only wanted to scare his Mr. Nosy and make it seem like he could replace him if he wanted to. But he didn't want to! Now he was stuck with a different Mr. Nosy.
At least I got him to promise to always obey me, he thought, glancing at the light green Mr. Man who looked around the house curiously. Maybe this won't be so bad.
"Okay, pay attention," Mr. Small called to him, but at first he didn't turn to him. When Mr. Small shouted," Hey!" he finally looked at him. "Nobody here knows about our portal so do not mention it, no matter what. And you must be nice and kind to everyone you meet. You must live up to your name, above all else. Do you understand?"
Mr. Nosy nodded. Then he walked over to the telescope and looked through the eyepiece. Mr. Small took a breath. There was so much more this Mr. Nosy needed to know, such as the real world and Mr. Small's girlfriend, Elizabeth. But he didn't want to tell him everything just yet. He wanted to make sure he'll work out and if everyone will believe he's the same Mr. Nosy. If everything goes smoothly, then he'll reveal everything. If they don't, well then he'll have to do what he can to get the other Mr. Nosy back.
But I won't beg, he promised himself. I'll trick him or something to get him to come back. Until then, I must test this Mr. Nosy.
Putting on a cheerful smile, he gestured for Mr. Nosy to follow him. "Let's go see some of our friends," Mr. Small said when Mr. Nosy glanced at him curiously. "I want to see if you can fool any of them."
Mr. Nosy joined him. "Alright then."
"After you." Mr. Small pointed to the door, and Mr. Nosy opened it and walked out. Mr. Small took a breath and let it out and then followed his new best friend.
