"Static!!" shouted Charmy, snapping his fingers. Static flung back into his chair, nearly falling out of it. "Since you apparently think it's better to daydream in my class because you're way smarter than anyone else here," Charmy said sarcastically, "that's detention for the rest of the week."
The class oohed and laughed at Static, while he sunk into his seat. "Thanks a lot, Sally," he muttered to himself.
After Class
Static trudged out of the classroom, his mind still reeling from the embarrassment. He spotted his friends, Kaden and Ryder, waiting for him by the lockers.
"How come you have detention?" Kaden, Ryder's twin brother, asked, his curiosity piqued.
"I-I dozed off in class," Static admitted, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.
"Wow, math must be pretty boring," mused Ryder, a hint of amusement in his voice.
Kaden chuckled. "Well, at least it's just detention. Could be worse."
Ryder nodded in agreement. "True. But you should probably try to stay awake next time."
Static sighed. "Yeah, I know. It's just... Sally'sbeen acting weird around me, and I can't stop thinking about it. She knows I'm not into her, but she keeps trying to get my attention."
Ryder nodded, his expression serious. "Bro, you need to set some boundaries."
Static nodded. "I know. It's just... complicated. I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I also don't want to lead her on."
Kaden clapped a hand on Static's shoulder. "You'll figure it out, man. Just be honest with her."
As they walked down the hallway, Static couldn't shake the feeling of unease. He knew he had to talk to Sally, but the thought of confronting her made his stomach churn.
Later that day, during lunch, Static spotted Sally sitting alone at a table. Taking a deep breath, he approached her.
"Hey, Sally. Can we talk?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
Sally looked up, her eyes brightening. "Sure, Static. What's up?"
Static sat down across from her, his heart pounding. "I need to be honest with you. I know you've been trying to get my attention, but I can't reciprocate those feelings. You're Ryder's ex, and I would never do that to him. Plus, I just don't feel that way about you."
Instead of looking upset, Sally leaned in closer, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Oh, come on, Static. You can't tell me you haven't thought about it," she said, her voice dripping with flirtation.
Static backed up, his heart racing. "Sally, please, this isn't right."
Sally ignored his plea and moved even closer, backing him up against the wall. Just when Static thought things couldn't get worse, she kissed him. Edged with surprise, Static's eyes widened.
At that moment, Aurora turned the corner and saw them. Her face fell, and she quickly turned and walked the other way, tears edging her eyelids. "Don't cry, A, don't cry," she whispered to herself.
Breaking away from Sally, Static ran after Aurora, shouting her name. "Aurora, wait! It's not what it looks like!"
Aurora didn't stop, her pace quickening as she tried to escape the hurt she felt. Static's heart sank as he realized the situation had just become even more complicated.
Count on Sally, Am I right?
