Chapter 1: Shin Gojo Collins
Orlando, Florida, USA
September 3rd, 2024
6:50 AM

On a warm, post-summer morning in Orlando, Florida, Shin Collins walks alone, a 15-year-old boy on his way to Richard L. Scott High School. He wears a black zip-up hoodie he bought himself from the local thrift shop, light blue jeans two sizes too big, secured by a black belt, rugged gray Converse shoes, and a black Jansport backpack. As he walks through the neighborhood, his bleach-white hair begins to itch. He runs his fingers through his hair, and a few flakes of dandruff fall. The water at the orphanage had been cut off three days ago, so Shin hasn't been able to properly wash his hair in a while. In one pocket, he has an iPhone 6S with worn-out Apple earbuds connected to the audio jack. In the other pocket, there was $2.16, just enough for school lunch. Blasting through the earbuds, he listens to "Smile" by Lily Allen. His favorite genre has always been British pop, especially loving singers like Adele and George Michael, the latter of whom is his all-time favorite. Shin continues to walk down the warm empty street. He looks to his right and sees a hideous cursed spirit desperately peering through the window of an apartment. Inside the apartment, a couple argues over finances. Shin sighs and continues his walk.

As he approaches the school grounds, he stops in his tracks. His heart slowly beats faster as his cursed energy begins to leak, and Shin begins to panic. He reaches into the side pocket of his backpack, pulls out a black blindfold, and places it over his face. He begins wrapping the blindfold around his crystal-blue eyes, and as he finishes the knot, chains made of cursed energy bind the blindfold to Shin's eyes, locking away his unstable cursed energy. As the chains bind themselves to his eyes, the chaotic and unrefined energy inside him settles, leaving behind a strange, hollow calm.

Once he recollects himself, Shin goes through the large metallic double doors separating the outside from the school. He makes a beeline straight for his locker and inputs the code he's been practicing to memorize.

"32-34... 36...?"

The locker does not budge. Shin groans in frustration as he swings over his backpack and rummages through his messy belongings to pull out a torn-off piece of paper with his locker number and combination scribbled on it. "Locker 1051: 32-34-36," it reads. Shin confusingly looks up and realizes he's been trying to open someone else's locker, locker 1049. Shin groans in frustration yet again and moves two lockers to his right and inputs the correct code into the correct locker. This time, the locker swings open. Shin places his backpack in his locker, removes his pencil and math notebook, and heads to first period: Algebra II with Mr. Thornburg. As he approaches the hallway, fellow students stare at Shin and begin to giggle. They have never seen a student wearing a blindfold like that, and ever since cursed energy was made public after the Shibuya Incident, many still have no idea about the vast complexities of cursed energy. Walking into the classroom, he greets his teacher and sits down in his seat. As the bell rings, Mr. Thornburg shuts the door behind him and makes an announcement to the class.

Mr. Thornburg: "Good morning, class. I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend. Test grades from last week are in. Please take 5 minutes to check them while I prepare today's lesson."

Shin begins to worry. He is certain he did not do well on that test; he always struggled with variables. He pulls out his phone and opens the gradebook, and sees that his Algebra II grade has taken a nosedive from 96 to 74. He opens his grade and finds out he got a 48 on his exam. Shin puts his hand on his face and sighs. He then notices there is an electronic note: "See me after class." Class carries on as normal, and a new unit is introduced. When the dismissing bell rings, Shin grabs his belongings and heads straight to Mr. Thornburg's desk. As Shin approaches, Mr. Thornburg looks up with a worried expression on his face.

Mr. Thornburg: "Shin, I am concerned about this test grade. Your past teachers described you as a star student. What happened?"

Shin: "I'm fine, Mr. Thornburg. Maybe I just didn't understand the way you teach."

Mr. Thornburg: "I don't appreciate you insulting my teaching like that. I think there is something going on. Are you sure everything's okay? You've been off lately..." He whispers.

Shin opens his mouth to say something, as if the words are trying to escape his mouth, but he bites his tongue.

Shin: "No, Mr. Thornburg, I'm fine. I promise I'll do better on the next test."

Shin turns around and leaves the classroom without giving Mr. Thornburg any time to respond. As he leaves, a small tear wells up under Shin's eye. He knows Mr. Thornburg is right, but he just can't say anything about it. He understands the implications.

Now, he makes his way to second period, his favorite class of the day: Orchestra. Shin has had a passion for the violin ever since he was a little boy. Not only was it a necessary way to stimulate his brain because of his Six Eyes, but Shin also enjoyed expressing himself through the way he played. Many label Shin as an orchestra kid because of this.

As he walks to the orchestra hall, he is greeted by his best friend, Micheal Hill. Right as shin lays his eyes on Micheal, a wide smile captures his face

Micheal: "Hey Shin! How are you man?"

Shin: "Eh, could be better, just found out I bombed the Algebra test."

Micheal: "I was just about to mention that... I got a 50.."

Shin: "No waaaay! I got a 48!"

The two boys laugh together as they walk to the orchestra hall. As they pass through the doors they head straight for Shins music locker, Shin opens it and removes the case for his violin. He opens up the case and begins assembling the shoulder rest on the instrument, and tightening his bow. Micheal however, doesn't need to worry about setting up, because he plays the Double bass, and his instrument is already good to go from the last class. As Shin continues preparing for class, they talk about their most serious topics. Manga, food, which girl was the hottest at RLS High, your typical teenage boy chatter. Shin finishes setting up his violin, and Micheal takes his seat in the bass section. While on the way to his chair, he is greeted by his other friends in the orchestra. This is truly where Shin feels the most at home.

Shin was especially exited for this year because him and Micheal earned a spot on the varsity orchestra, where the best musicans in the entire school prepare together for one big event. Festival Disney. However, Shin didnt care for the competition, but rather the fact that he is going to freaking Disney with all his friends!

As Shin takes his seat, the music director, Dr. Gerver takes his stand and gives out instructions

Dr. Gerver: "Good morning class, let's get straight into todays work, I want everyone flipping to Beethoven 9, we're working on movement 2 today."

To Shin, the rehersal went by very quickly, class had ended and he was already on his way to the rest of his classes, and once the final bell rang at 2:45 PM, Shin went straight to his locker, where he grabs his backpack and turns around to face the other children exiting the building to board school busses to go home, or to get a ride from their parents. He takes a good envious look at them and turns around, heading straight for Prinicpal Shaw's office. He always hated the walks to his office, his worry making the hallways warp and seem longer than they are. Once he arrives he stares at the gold plated label outside the office "CAMERON SHAW: SCHOOL PRINICPAL.". It looked so official, so professional. He knocks on the door, and a deep strict voice emerges from the other side

Cameron Shaw: "Come in Shin."

Shin opens the door to his office and there sat Cameron Shaw, in a perfectly kept black suit, his black hair slicked perfectly back. His posture was perfect, siting in his desk with upmost masculinity. Shin puts his backpack down and takes a seat on the other side of the desk.
