It was a beautiful day. Kat and Angel were in his office, when some green demon with some kind of armor on broke through the window, which made them have to work together to fight it.
Angel grabbed the sword he'd lost a few moments ago from the ground, stabbing it into its lower stomach, and some of the green goo got on his hand, but it disappeared, as the demon went out the window.
"What the hell was that thing?"
"It's a demon, but I've never seen this kind of demon before," he informed her. "Come on. We need to track down the demon while it's still injured."
Kat followed him to the sewer tunnels, once she'd grabbed a crossbow, him with an axe in hand. Then, after a while in the sewers, a few minutes after touching the goo on the wall from the demon, he told her, "I feel kind of weird."
"What do you mean by weird?" she questioned, since in her world, weird could fall under a lot of categories.
"From the demon's blood," he told her. "It's powerful."
"Let's just find this thing," she replied.
After walking through the sewers all day, they finally found the demon after it had come back down that night, having been patched up where demons usually went to get patched up at. The fight then began again, and this time, he put a sword through the demon. It left green goo on his hand though, and he suddenly felt a sensation that made him fall to his knees.
Kat went over to him, kneeling by him, an arm around him.
"Angel."
He suddenly could feel things that he hadn't felt in centuries.
"I'm alive," he stated, getting his breath back.
"Let's get back," she replied. She knew what that meant. The demon's goo had turned him back into a human.
That day, when they got back, Doyle and Cordy were there.
"What's wrong? What happened?" Cordy asked, seeing his face.
Angel walked over to look out the window, which was when Doyle realized what had happened.
"He's alive, Cordelia," Doyle informed her.
"Alive?" Cordy inquired.
"Katherine and I were attacked by some kind of demon. I tracked it, and I killed it. Some of its blood mixed with mine."
"And you wound up with a pulse," Doyle commented.
"I have to find out what kind of demon it was," Angel stated.
"No. You let Doyle and Cordy find that out for us. We just went through hell with that thing. You need to take a moment. Everything's more real now now that we're both human."
"You're right," he agreed. "Cordy. Doyle. Find out what demon it was."
A little bit later, Doyle found the kind of demon.
"It's an Amorha demon. They're soldiers of Darkness kind of thing," Doyle informed him. "They take out warriors like you are. Its blood has regenerating properties. There it is."
"It explains what happened to me. It doesn't explain why," Angel replied.
"What does it matter? The demon's dead. You're alive. It's happy fun time."
"What's going on here, Doyle?"
"I don't know," Doyle replied to him. "I thought the only way you could become mortal was if the Powers That Be stepped in."
"They did this?" Angel inquired. Then asked, "Is this permanent? Can I be a normal Joe now? Can I have a normal life?"
"What if it's a gift? Doyle has visions. That's a gift. Maybe you've done so much good that they decided to make you human again."
"It can't be. It just can't," Angel replied to her.
"Why? Because you were a vampire for 200 years? Because you did bad things, and you've been trying to make up for that for hundreds of years? Come on, Angel. Look at me. I'm human, and I was a vampire a lot older than yourself. Another 500, and I would've nearly been considered an Original. I had trouble accepting that I was human myself, but I got over it. People made me see that I'm still the same person. Just without the powers and fangs. You're the same. The only difference is you actually have tried to do good for the sake of others. The only person I wanted to do better by was my daughter. But with you, I've learned to be better. Let me help you see that."
"You don't fully understand here. Without vampirism, I don't know who I am anymore. What my purpose is."
"Then we'll find out together. What are friends for?" she replied, and then gave a smile.
That night, Doyle came to his place some time after she and Angel had had a thing, telling Angel that he'd had a vision that the demon had regenerated itself.
"Wait. They released you. It's not your problem anymore," Doyle stated.
"You want that thing to roam free?" Angel questioned.
"But if it regenerates itself, how will you kill it?" Doyle asked.
"We'll figure it out," Angel replied.
Doyle, Kat, and Angel were walking around to find it, as Doyle read from a book.
"This isn't good. When it regenerates, it comes back bigger and stronger."
"How do I kill it?" Angel asked.
Doyle informed him by reading from the book. Then told him, "Just remember it's bigger, stronger, and…here." He added that last part, seeing it above them.
It jumped down on Doyle, and he got knocked out, so now it was just Angel and Kat against it. They did their best to fight side by side, but then Angel got his ass kicked by it. It then was about to kill Angel with a sword in hand.
"Darkness is coming. More will come. Soldiers of Darkness," it told him, as it prepared to stab him.
While it was distracted, Kat grabbed some salt from the ground she saw, realizing what she needed to do. Unlike most, she never allowed her emotions to overpower her during a real battle.
"Hey!" she yelled at it.
It turned to look at her, which was when she threw the salt at the diamond on its forehead. It stumbled away, before bursting, dying for good this time.
Kat put her weapon down, and then knelt by him. She could tell that that demon had hurt him pretty good. But then again, she was much better at fighting the supernatural than he was as a human.
Later that night, he was in bed after getting tended to by Kat, her knowing what to do from when she was supposed to follow in her mother's footsteps, but had never been able to. Kat was still seated on his bedside, as he lay there, though.
"After tonight, we can't do this. I have to ask to be turned into a vampire again. If I don't, one of us could end up dead, whether we fight alongside each other or not," he told her.
"No. You're saying that because some demon kicked your ass tonight, and I was the one to win the fight. You can't decide after a whole day whether you still want to be human or not. You aren't me. You don't have a wish to end it. You're more of a hero than I am. Just because you're human doesn't mean you can't still do what you do. You just need to learn how to fight as a human."
"Fine. I'll see how I handle this more. Then I'll decide," he assured her. He didn't think he'd change his mind, though.
Kat was happy with that answer, and gave a smile at that.
