Chapter 8 – The Path He Took
Red ran. Far away from the crowded court room, the nasty and vile glares – He couldn't handle it anymore. It wasn't fair. Green wasn't this type of person! Green was an amazing man and trainer – talented at anything he tried at. Why did his big break come from something so vile? Why couldn't the world just see him for what he was – and not what he wasn't? Red paused. He felt his heart pang with guilt. Red knew how Green really was. Green was competitive and willing to do whatever it took to reach the top.
But he knew damn well Green wasn't one for abuse. He knew deep down, even though his Pokémon seemed overworked, they were loved and taken care of greatly. Red only knew this because he happened to stumble across Green one day in Viridian forest and witnessed him tend and care for his Pokémon. After Green was done, Red walked out and only seemed to 'anger' Green – but it wasn't like Red really cared.
He was enveloped in a goofy and loving smile. To see Green concentrating and taking the time to treat his Pokémon with high quality care and love was heartwarming. Red knew it was silly to fall for any man since he too was a man – even more foolish since it was with Green, a wandering womanizer.
But he simply couldn't help himself. He tried desperately for years to disconnect himself from his affinity towards Green and whenever he was close to getting rid of his feelings, Green would appear out of thin air, reminding Red of his feelings. Red knew Green didn't see him in the same light – in fact, it was the total opposite. Green hated Red's existence – Only because he was a better trainer. It wasn't like Red could compete with Green in looks – all the women flocked towards Green because he was more masculine than Red.
And Red was jealous – not because Green got all the ladies. It was because Red couldn't be romantic and flock to Green like he really wanted to. It was a secret to everyone, but Red's hopeless romantic side really, really wanted to just run to Green, be picked up and spun around just like a princess. It could be considered weird. But he didn't care. Everyone had their hopes so why couldn't he?
Red sighed and glanced around. He was in the nearby forest. He shuffled to a nearby tree and leaned his head against the tree. Tears fell down his face and he raised his hands to his face. He couldn't help but bawl like a baby. He didn't want the world to see Green shackled like a monster.
After a while, Red felt his eyes start to get heavy. He was tired. He couldn't cry anymore. He turned and sat down, leaning against the trunk of the tree. He closed his eyes and sighed lightly before drifting off to sleep. He was awaken by rain landing on his head. He glanced around and noticed the full moon. And the tears started to pour again.
He recalled what Green had said years ago when they were smaller under a full moon just like this one. They were around the ages of eight and nine. They both had convinced their parents to let them go camping on their own in Viridian forest. During the day they ran around climbing and 'monkeying' around just like other kids their age. They played tag, fished, and just had the times over their lives. When the sun settled behind the horizon, they started back to their tent only to get lost.
Red started to panic until Green grasped and held his hand tightly. Red glanced up at Green. His eyes gleamed with beauty like a crystal clear lake. Red instantly calmed down and gazed upon Green's placid face. Green glanced over to Red and shot him a reassuring smile. Red smiled back and let Green lead him through the forest. The whole time Green never let go of Red's hand – and Red couldn't help but love the warm strong grip of Green's hand.
Red glanced around the forest as they attempted to make their way back to the tent. The trees loomed over the two, casting shadows and hindering their vision. The moon was hovering above them showing that they had been wandering for a while. Red bit his lip and stuck close to Green, scared that something might get them. They had been out for a while and he wasn't sure if they'd even find their tent – would they have to sleep out in the open? Red grimaced and glanced at Green, trying his best to figure out why he wasn't scared. Green's face showed nothing but calmness like a lake on a warm lazy day.
Green noticed Red staring at him and sighed.
"What are you up too?" Green asked trying not to break his focus of finding their tent. Red jumped a bit and froze up, staring at the starless black abyss that hung above them.
"O-oh you know, the moon! It's so bright tonight!" Red chimed out quickly, laughing meekly at the end. Green raised an eyebrow and chuckled to him, patting Red on his back.
"Right, sure you were. Anyways, I think I've found our tent! Look over there," Green spat out quickly, motioning towards a clearing. Red narrowed his eyes and noticed a small tent-shaped figure out in the clearing – and shouted in joy.
They had found their tent.
Red bolted towards the tent, ditching Green. He was tired and wanted to sleep. Green sighed and chased after Red. Once they reached their tent, Green took out a lantern and lit it, hanging it off their tent so it wouldn't get lost. Red pulled out dinner that his mother had cooked up for the both of them and handed Green his portion. As they ate, they joked and goofed off, being loud and merry.
As they were finishing, Red noticed Green staring at Red. Red raised and eyebrow.
"Something wrong, Green?" Red asked, not sure what Green was up too. Green smiled and gently tapped Red's nose. Red backed up confused with Green. Green laughed and smiled brightly.
"Red, if you ever get lost just remember this - you can always call on me for help. I promise I'll be there for you because you're my best friend! I hope you'll do the same for me if something ever happens," Green said, trying to hide his increasingly flushed face. Red was stunned and happy- He would always be there for Green and he couldn't help but feel his heart beat raise. Red stood up and hugged Green abruptly. Green squeaked in surprise and wiggled, trying to get away from Red.
"G-Geeze, will you settle down, Red?" Green huffed out, finally freeing himself of Red's hug. Red smiled.
"Green, you're my best friend and -"
"Yeah yeah, I know. I'm pretty cool," Green chimed out smiling. Green yawned and stretched out his arms. Red smiled brightly as Green started to doze off – because he himself was tired. The two cleaned up and headed into the tent, plopping down and crawling inside their sleeping bags. Green fell asleep almost instantly while Red let his thoughts wander for a bit about Green.
Green wasn't the nicest kid around – hell the first day they met, Green pushed him down and spit on him. But now they were friends and that's all that mattered to Red. Red turned and gazed at Green, his mouth agape and snoring loudly. Red giggled to himself and smiled once more.
Green was his best friend – and he loved Green with all his heart.
"Green, god damnit, you promised me!" Red bellowed out, pointing furiously at Green. Green huffed and crossed his arms, pouting slightly at being yelled at. Maria was sitting on the stair case, watching the whole debacle. It had been a week since she had moved in and ever since then, Green had started acting differently. He had been avidly searching for a job – and Red wasn't amused one bit. Maria grimaced as Green shifted his head to face Red directly, eye-to-eye, man-to-man – he was ready to fight.
Red glowered, curling his hands into fists, showing he in fact wasn't intimidated by Green. Green abruptly stood up, glaring at Red the whole time and stomped off to the kitchen, motioning for Red to follow him. Red huffed and charged right after Green. Maria grimaced and watched from afar as the two men disappeared into the kitchen.
"I hope Mr. Green is okay…" She mumbled out as she started up the stairs to her room.
"God fucking damnit, Green – are you trying to get noticed for that damn crime you did five years ago? You don't need to worry about making any money; for the last time my pay check is more than enough to hold us ov-"
"That's not the damn point, Red. I'm tired of sitting here doing absolutely nothing but cleaning – I can't take it anymore, Red. I need something to do!" Green hollered, leaning onto the nearest counter top and holding his head. Red sighed and crossed his arms.
"Can't you just watch and play with Maria while I'm at work and clean the house? Isn't that enough for you?" Red spat out, waving his one hand in an irritated manner. Green huffed and glared directly at Red, grinding his teeth in frustration.
"I'm not being a damn housewife, Red. She'll be at school till four p.m. because she's in an afterschool club and she leaves for school at seven a.m. Why in the hell can't I have a job that's from eight to three? And I don't give a fuck if people find out what I did – it was already on the news for three months straight five years ago –"
"But people will bring it the fuck back up and try to chase you out of town!" Red shouted out, cutting Green off. He smacked his one hand off the counter he was by and caused Green to roll his eyes and snort. Red glowered at Green.
"Red, you're acting like they'll fucking care. And besides, you act like I'm the only person in the whole god damn world who has beaten or even hit a Pokémon. I get what I did was wrong in all ways but god damnit, if a murderer can get hired then so can I!" Green bellowed out, smacking his hand off the counter multiple times, increasingly getting louder. Red stayed quit and sighed. He bowed his head and when he looked back up at Green, tears were streaming down his face. Green felt his heart pang in shock.
"R-red, why are you crying?" Green asked calmly, gently placing his arm around Red's shoulder and pulling him close. Red started to bawl, grasping Green's shirt and practically hanging onto Green for dear life.
"I-I don't want to l-lose you ag-gain, Green!" Red spat out between tears as he trembled. Green sighed and hugged Red, patting and petting his head, reassuring him. He understood that Red loved him – but he was being a bit over dramatic. The town had expanded so much over five years it basically was a busy city – no one would care about Green. Green sighed once more and kissed Red gently on the forehead.
"It'll be okay, I promise. I'm not going anywhere, Red," Green cooed out, rocking Red in his arms gently. Red stopped crying eventually and released Green. Green patted Red on the back.
"Why don't you go upstairs and lay down for a bit and take a nap? I'm sure all that crying made you tired," Green said, slowly leading Red to the stairs. Red complied and marched up the stairs, looking back at Green in a sad manner. Green sighed and leaned against the wall after Red entered their room.
He needed to apologize to Red later – and he also wanted to do something nice for him. Green thought for a minute then realized that Red hadn't seen his Pikachu in forever – and he knew that Pikachu and Red were the best of friends. He smiled and hurried off to his grandpa's house.
He wanted Red to visit with his lost friend, Pikachu for a bit.
Green walked around the city, getting lost a few times. Once he finally found his grandpa's house, he nervously knocked on the door and waited to encounter a very pissed off professor Oak. It was obvious why his grandpa would be upset with Green – he basically shamed his grandpa with his crimes against Pokémon. The door slowly creaked open and there stood professor Oak, shock over his face.
"What do you want, Green?" Oak hissed out, not pleased to see Green. Green rolled his eyes and marched past his grandpa and into his house. Oak started yelling at Green for being rude and inviting himself in but Green didn't pay any attention to it. He finally reached the room where Oak kept all poke ball's at and entered, seeing a familiar Pikachu asleep on a soft pet bed.
Green bent down and slowly petted Red's Pikachu. The Pikachu glanced up and hissed at Green, shocking him slightly. Green grimaced but tried his best to keep his composure.
"P-Pikachu, I understand you're not happy to see me but I beg of you please come with me and see Red. He's rather upset because… I… well, I made him angry with me and I think he just needs time away from me and would love to see you again, Pikachu," Green spat out, trying his best to speak quick as he didn't want to get shocked again. Pikachu seemed to of listened and stood up, staring at Green.
"Pika-Pi. Pikachuu!" Red's Pikachu called out, giving Green a thumb's up. Green sighed and went to pick Pikachu up only to be hissed at once more. Green rolled his eyes and marched out of the room with Pikachu trailing after him. He left his grandpa's house without saying goodbye. It's not like it would have mattered anyways as his grandpa was still upset at Green.
While Green was walking home again, he ended up getting lost again.
"God damnit," Green cursed out under his breath. He didn't mind that Pallet town had become some huge ass city – but he did mind getting lost. He still wasn't use to the layout despite already living here for a few months. He grumbled to himself as he made his way down an alleyway. The walls of the buildings were somewhat decayed and rather mucked up with pollution and graffiti. The path he was walking down was cracked and he couldn't help but watch every step he took – he didn't want to trip and fall down.
As he left the shady alleyway, he came upon several ran down houses. Green grimaced as people of low standing stared in awe at Green. These towns people all wore rags and seemed to be sickly or starved – some seemed about to fall over and die. Green frowned as he saw small children running around, barely clothed with their ribs sticking out. While Green was walking down the street, trying to find a way back to the city's center, he noticed something strange.
Everyone had circular scars on their arms, legs, chests, and faces – but they seemed to glow a red hue. Green observed a few kids and noticed that these 'scars' seemed to branch out, not really looking like scars nor tattoos.
Was something genetically wrong with all these people? Green thought hard and long until he recalled when he reentered Pallet Town a few months ago after being in Jail for five years. He saw people with the same scars, or whatever they were, but they weren't as serve. He raised an eyebrow, remembering that the place he had entered from too was shady and run down, unlike the rest of the town.
He had been down this street before but hadn't realized it. He noticed a rather tall elderly man staring at him and Green approached him, with Pikachu still following after him.
"Uhm, excuse me sir, do you hap-"
"Affected too huh? I don't see your markings… freshly infected I guess? If you want housing, you'll-" The elderly man rambled out, cutting Green off. Green quickly waved the man off, trying his best to comprehend what he just heard.
"Wow, slow down, sir. I'm not infected… what do you mean by that?" Green asked, scratching his head in confusion. The elderly men went wide eyed and sighed, leaning against a nearby wall.
"Were you born yesterday, son? How could you not hear about 'us'? I think you're just fucking with me and I suggest you get out of here – center of the town is over there, kiddo. Get going, now," The elderly man barked out, shoving Green towards the center of town. Green tried to ask a question but was cut off each time.
Once he was back to the center of town, he sighed. He just wanted to know what was wrong and how they got those 'scars'. And how were they all infected? Why did it seem like no one cared about them? They had barely any food or anything at all! Green huffed and marched straight home with Pikachu trailing after him. He'd try to learn more about it later – he just wanted to get home and surprise Red.
Once he got home, he saw Maria running around playing in the front yard with a kite. He patted her on the head and watched her kite sail high into the sky. It was a bright yellow kite with electric blue ribbons on it. It danced and waved through the sky, making Maria smile brightly. Green plopped down with Pikachu on his shoulder, watching the kite in amazement.
It had been forever since he'd flown a kite or even seen one. He watched for a few minutes before remembering he needed to surprise Red before he woke up.
"Maria, having fun?" He asked, standing back up and dusting himself off. She shook her head 'yes' and smiled.
"What's a Pikachu doing here?" Maria asked, questioning Pikachu with a curious glance. Green patted Pikachu on his head, pushing his limits with Pikachu and his tolerance.
"This is Red's Pikachu – he hasn't seen the little guy in forever so I thought I'd surprise Red and bring him his Pikachu to visit for a while. Maybe one day we'll be able to bring Pikachu to live with us," Green chimed out, smiling fondly at Maria.
"Mr. Green! I think that's an awesome idea! I hope Mr. Red likes it! I mean, you are his boyfriend aft-" Maria hurriedly said, jumping up and down. Pikachu hissed when she said they were boyfriend and boyfriend and Green panicked.
"M-maria! Red isn't my boyfriend, for the last time, geeze.." Green huffed out, trying his best not to get shocked to death by Red's Pikachu. Maria giggled and elbowed Green lightly.
"Suuure, Mr. Green. Whatever you say," She joked sarcastically, smiling. Green sighed and waved her off.
"Well, you have fun and be safe. I'm going to go surprise Red now," Green said, making his way inside his house. Maria wished him luck and Green smiled. He quietly walked up the stairs and peeked in his room, seeing Red sleeping peacefully. He snuck in and laid on the other side of the bed, facing Red. He had Pikachu lay with him as he woke Red up.
"Hey, Red. Wake up, I got something for you," Green whispered into Red's ear. Red's eyes opened and in a second went wide. He sat up quickly and stared at his Pikachu. Pikachu's eyes sparkled with joy as he jumped onto Red's lap, nuzzling against Red's abdomen.
"Surprise, Red! Brought the little guy to se-"Was all Green got out before Red suddenly and forcefully kissed him. Red ran his tongue against Green's lips, demanding entrance. Green opened his mouth and intertwined his tongue with Red's, losing his cool in the moment. He raced a hand up Red's shirt and his other hand around Red's neck and head. He tilted his head, deepening his kiss with Red. Red moaned slightly, wrapping his arms around Green's neck. Green circled his tongue around Red's feeling chills of excitement race through his body. He pressed against Red more, deepening the kiss even more. The two broke away from the deep kiss needing air, gasping from their heated kissing.
Red stared seductively at Green, licking his bottom lip slowly. Green felt his self-control about to snap when he noticed Pikachu stunned and shocked at what he was literally stuck in between. Red leaned in and Green backed away, placing his hands out and stopping Red's vicious making out session by holding his face.
"U-uhm, you play with Pikachu, I-I'ma go check on Maria," Green stammered out, rushing out of the bedroom. Red watched in disappointment, not sure if he properly apologized. He had heard from his co-workers that a surprise make-out session could mean sorry and was a great way to make up for something.
Red laid back down on the bed and hugged Pikachu. He'd have to make sure to apologize in a normal way – and then maybe continue from where they left of when Maria went to bed.
Green hustled downstairs and saw Maria still playing outside. Once he saw she was okay, he headed back upstairs to the bathroom.
He was in need of a very long cold shower.
