Chapter 17 – We Make A Pair

The air was absolutely chilled with despair on the night Green was arrested. Green's eyes were glued to the outside world – not the police car he was currently jammed into. He watched as Pallet town became but a blur of light and then into nothing. He glanced over to the cops in the front of the car but they were too busy chatting with each other. Just small talk. Nothing that was interesting. Green sighed and rubbed his sore knuckles. He hung his head in shame and felt his throat tighten up.

What had he done? Why was he even here in the first place? Green wanted to ask the cops but he didn't want to interrupt them – plus he had a feeling they weren't going to tell him anyways. Green bit his lip and closed his eyes. Green wasn't a very religious man but he figured a prayer right now wouldn't hurt. He prayed that whatever he did to end up here would be quickly resolved and he could go back to his normal life.

Guilt started to set into his heart and Green wasn't sure why. He remembered his battle with Red – a crushing defeat and an already broken friendship completely shattered. Green felt tears well in his eyes. His heart started to pound. He darted his gaze to the cop's and saw piercing eyes of judgment eating him alive. Sweat started to trickle down from his forehead and he adverted his gaze – It was slowly coming back. The intense emotions that lead him to where he was – they were refreshing his mind. His knuckles screamed with agony and he tried his best to cover them from himself but it was too late.

His precious Eevee – his only friend he had that could truly be there for him. He hurt her. He took all his anger and frustrations out on her. He screamed and yelled, calling her worthless and pathetic. She whimpered in forgiveness and Green scoffed – and then Red's sad eyes flashed in his mind – that bastard caused this. Green curled his fists and turned towards his Eevee and started to hit and abuse her. Her cries filled the room and it only made Green angrier at Red. He started to hit harder. Faster. It became gruesome in only seconds before Oak and Daisy rushed in.

Daisy screamed silently as she held her hand over her mouth. Oak rushed over and tried to pry Green's hands off his Eevee but Green shoved him back. Oak grabbed a hold of Green's shoulders.

"Stop it! Green! Stop!," Oak yelled, trying to force Green off of Eevee. Green turned his head to Oak and his eyes started to well. Green crumbled to the ground, covered in fresh blood – a mix of his and Eevee's. Oak held Green as he started to wail uncontrollably. Oak patted Green on the back and held him close. Daisy rushed out of the room to call the police as Oak kept Green in his arms. Oak consoled Green for a few minutes and then the pale cry of Eevee caused him to leave Green alone. Oak's stomach churned. Green's Eevee was a horrible sight to see.

Her fur was matted with fresh blood and places on her were already starting to swell. Oak pet her gently and picked her up. She whimpered a bit but Oak didn't stop from getting her up. He walked passed a broken, wailing Green and went outside by the tree. He placed her down carefully and sat by her, continuing to pet her. Tears started to well in his eyes as he felt her struggle with each breath.

What had happened to cause this? Oak shook his head and continued to try and comfort the Eevee. He would have been performing an exam on her – but she was badly hurt and he was sure she'd die soon from her injuries. Oak jumped at the slam of the house door – and out stormed Green with Daisy chasing after him, tugging at his arms to stop him. Green flung her off him and pushed her down to the ground. Green jumped on top of her and went to hit her when he suddenly stopped – and Daisy kicked him in the groin. He crumbled and she rolled him off of her. She hastily stood up and turned to Oak.

"W-what the fuck is going on?! I called the c-cops but I- I'm scared! Why did this happen? What in the hell?!" Daisy spat out in between her uncontrollable tears. She started to tremble and held her face as she cried. Oak told her to come over and help him comfort Green's Eevee and she did. She hummed a lullaby and they both sat there in awe and sadness. They both shot each other a worried glance.

What happened to Green?

Green's eyes flashed away and he gasped. He glanced around and was panting. Where was he? Green shook his head and tried to collect himself. He remembered Hearing James' and Jesse's phone call with Red and them calling him their boss – Green jumped up and felt into his jean pockets. He had his phone. He held his breath. Who is he to call? Should he even call anyone? Green sighed. He wasn't sure who to call and what good would it do anyways?

Green stood there thinking to himself and then all of a sudden he remembered why he was out here in the first place. He was going with Maria to go get something for dinner. Panic soared though his veins and he started to sweat. Where the hell was Maria?! Green bolted back from the way he came from. He entered to street in such a rush that he bumped into a few people. He yelled a half-assed 'sorry' as he continued down the street, searching through the crowd for Maria. If this was the old Pallet town he was sure to find her instantly – but that wasn't his luck at all.

He started yelling her name and people were looking and glaring at him as if he were insane – but Green couldn't give a shit at what they thought about him. He needed to find Maria as soon as possible. He couldn't let her be alone with Team Rocket members out and about in town. Even if Red was their boss he wouldn't trust a Team Rocket member for shit. Green bit his lip and raced down to the Pokemon center. He rushed pasted multiple people and eventually arrived to the Pokemon center. Green darted in and glanced around – and there she was. Maria was sitting by herself, staring into the distance. Green started towards her when he noticed someone tap her shoulder.

It was Jesse from Team Rocket. Green stopped dead in his tracks and watched in awe as they talked. Maria casted a downward frown as Jesse seemed to console her. Green slightly tilted his head. What in the hell was going on? Green stormed over and Maria snapped her gaze to him and gasped slightly.

"Mr. Green, what's wrong?" Maria asked, completely obvious to Jesse's stern look at Green. Green met her eyes and matched her glower. Jesse shifted her gaze to avert his. Green stood in front of them both at their table with his arms crossed.

"Why in the hell are you talking to her? She's apart of Team Rocket and I thought you'd know better than to talk to someone like her," Green spat out, grabbing Maria's shoulder as if he was going to pull her way if Jesse were to strike out. Jesse rolled her eyes and crossed her arms as well. Green raised an eyebrow.

"I don't know your relation to him, Maria, but this egotistical dim-wit of a twerp is no good. Stay away from him," Jesse sternly said, raising her index finger and acting confidently spiteful. Green narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms tighter to show his anger and frustration. Maria looked between the both of them confused at what was going on. She cleared her throat and they both turned and looked at Maria.

"Uh, I don't know what exactly is going on or how you know each other but I actually need Mrs. Jesse's help, Mr. Green. She can help me -" was all Maria got out before Jesse scoffed and rolled her eyes. Maria stopped talking and frowned. Jesse closed her eyes and pinched between her eyebrows.

"I've told you for the the last time, Maria. You need to forget about that day. You need to move on and live for your parents. They don't want you to live a revengeful life – they want their daughter, their pride and joy , to live a peaceful and happy life. I know that for a fact. So please, let the past be the past and move on. I know it's hard but you must – you can't change what's happened and you can't make it better but getting vengeance," Jesse snapped out, trying her best to dissuade whatever Maria was trying to ask for help for. Maria frowned and tears started to stream down her face. Green's anger melted away and he stood confused and in awe. Maria wanted Vengeance? For her parent's deaths? What?! Green sat down next to Maria and started to rub her back, trying to comfort her the best he could. Maria didn't budge and Jesse sighed loudly.

"What's your problem, Jesse?" Green asked, trying his best to not upset Maria anymore. He wasn't sure how Maria and Jesse knew each other but he sure as hell wasn't going to ignore the fact that they did know each other. He wanted to get to the bottom of it right away.

Jesse clicked her tongue in a dissatisfied manner and rolled her eyes.

"Why does it matter, Green? I'm not going to help her. I don't care if all she needs is a name out of me I'm -" was all Jesse got out before her eyes shrunk in horror. She stood up abruptly and backed away from the table. Green turned around and there at the entrance of the Pokemon Center was Red. His eyes were burning a hole into anyone who looked at him – as if he was trying to set the place on fire. Red marched over towards them. Each step he took seemed to cause even more panic in Jesse. She was squirming in discomfort at his gaze. Red reached their table and he plastered a very passive-aggressive smile on his face.

"Why if it isn't Jesse. Fancy meeting you here. Where's James? Did you guys finish hanging those posters for me?" Red rattled off, not giving Jesse a chance to respond. She went to speak but Red made a hand gesture and she shut her mouth quickly. Green raised an eyebrow as Maria's tears stopped and she was staring at Red. Her eyes seemed to quiver with smoke – as if a fire was slowly brewing. Green and Red's eyes locked and Red smiled – but this smile wasn't his usually happy-go-lucky one. It was a mask.

Red wasn't pleased with the current situation at all – and he was making sure to keep his cover while he handled his dirty business. Red took a step towards Jesse and grabbed her chin harshly, pulling her face to up to look at his. Jesse gasped as Red closed the gap between them, causing their faces to be just inches apart. Jesse started to sweat and Red's smile got even bigger.

"I think you'd better return to work, Jesse," Red spat out as he let go of her face and pulled away. Jesse waited for no one as she turned and ran towards the woman's bathroom. Red sighed and turned towards Green and Maria. Green was in absolute shock and confusion while Maria glowered at Red.

"Why are you being so mean to her? She was helping me out!" Maria yelled, causing Green to flinch. Red tilted his head slightly and scratched his face.

"She was helping you out? How? She's just some lazy woman that works for me now. Well, her and her husband do. They help me in my projects and business meetings," Red rambled out, as if he was trying to fly through his explanation as quickly as possible. Green raised his hands up and shook his head.

"Wow, you need to slow down, Red. You're a apart of Team Rocket now? What the fuck!" Green hollered out in disgust. Red shushed Green and a few people looked over in response to Green's small outburst, trying to figure out and nose their way into their business. Red sighed and shrugged his shoulders.

'I wasn't sure how or when I was going to tell you about it but Team Rocket isn't the same as it was five years ago. It's been completely changed for the better. We've been working on creating cures for diseases such as Cancer and AIDS. We're trying to better the world now instead of harming it by stealing people's Pokemon," Red said in a hushed tone, raising a hand to cover his mouth from nosy people trying to read lips.

Green gasped slightly. He has been in Red's work place before for the company party and even saw part of Red's office – it did look like a regular research type of company. But to be apart of Team Rocket? Green shook his head.

"I don't buy it. The Red I know wouldn't join Team Rocket," Green spat out in a dismissive tone. Red's eyes seemed to dull with anger. Red glowered at Green for a second and then hid his anger away. He slinked his arm around Green's shoulders and pulled Green close into him. Green froze up as Red whispered into his ear.

"The Green I know beat his Eevee to death and went to jail for five years. Seems like we're a pair of surprising men," Red whispered out. Green's body turned to solid ice. Did Red just bring 'that' up? Green's mind started to swarm with guilt and anguish. Maria looked scared as Red pulled away and flashed a smile. He patted Green on the shoulder and then bent down to eye level of Maria.

"Maria, I know this is kind of a lot to take in right now but I can explain more later. I'm really sorry to scare you. Now, how about we go get dinner? What are you hungry for? We could always stop at Dylan's. I'm sure he wouldn't mind having us over after hours. Right, Green?" Red asked. Green stood unresponsive for a few seconds and then he absentmindedly nodded. Red smiled and he clasped his hands together.

"Alright, let's go get dinner and then I'll explain more. It's a long, long story – but I promise you both that I mean no harm to the both of you. I love you both dearly," Red cooed out as he gently ran his hand over Maria's hair. Maria seemed to be comforted by his words and actions and nuzzled close to him. Maria glanced over at Green with a small but hopeful smile. Green forced a smile.

"Let's go. I'm sure he has extra food anyways. He always makes too much food," Green said, as he motioned for Red's hand. Red grasped his hand ever so gently and raised his hand to his lips and kissed it. Green felt himself blush a bit. What the hell was he doing that for in public?! Maria chuckled and squeezed in between them.

"Can I hold both of your hands as we walk to Mr. Dylan's? Please?," Maria begged, as she reached for both of their hands. They both smiled and held her hand, all walking out of the Pokemon Center together. Red and Maria happily chatted as Green started to run what Red had whispered into his ear over and over again.

That they were a pair of very surprising men – and indeed Red was full of surprises tonight and Green wasn't going to rest until he figured out why the fuck Red was in Team Rocket and what exactly he was doing.
