Chapter 18 – Team Rocket's Pallet City
Maria smiled happily as she held hands with Green and Red – but she was putting on the biggest act of her life. Her blood was boiling and she wasn't sure how she was containing all of her anger. She glanced back towards the Pokemon center and looked for any sign of Jesse and James but she didn't see them. She shifted her eyes forward and sighed to herself. She wanted to make sure that they were okay. Red's threatening tone towards Jesse made Maria realize one thing.
Red was Jesse's Boss – the man that caused her parents death's.
As soon as Red had said about being Jesse's boss, Maria wanted to grab a hold of him and beat him up – but she was only thirteen years old and there's no way she could cause him any harm – that is unless she had a weapon. Maria's lips curled into a devilish smile as she felt her brain started to churn out possible ways she could make him pay. She knew Jesse told her to forget and move on but Maria couldn't. Maria wanted to get revenge for all those who had been hurt or even killed at the hands of Red. She wanted justice for all of them. She wanted their ashes that were blown away in the wind to not be forgotten about.
She wanted Red to pay for what he did – and she wasn't going to let anyone stop her from delivering justice.
Maria glanced over at Green who seemed to be lost in thought. She knew Green had to be super confused about what was going on. Maria really wanted to pull Green to the side and explain herself – why she was left orphaned and hurt but she knew that Red wouldn't be leaving Green's side for a long while. He was going to have to think of some clever excuse to cover his ass. Red hid that he was part of Team Rocket this whole time. Green was probably heart-broken – and that made Maria giddy.
She wanted Green to hurt Red. She wanted Green to leave Red, crushing his heart and breaking their relationship up for good. She didn't want Red to have his happy ending when he destroyed hers – and she sure as hell wasn't going to be his daughter and be apart of his happy end. And she knew Green wouldn't either.
There's no way Green could stay with a monster like Red once the truth came out. Maria smiled to herself and started to hum a tune. Justice would be delivered soon. She just knew it. She tightened her grasp on both of their hands causing them both to look down at her. She flashed a happy grin.
"I love being together like this. Makes me feel like I'm in a happy and normal family – like nothing ever bad happened to me!" Maria lied as she kept her happy grin on. Green's perplexed face softened and he smiled her. Red seemed a bit embarrassed and scratched the side of his face and looked away.
"I'm glad you feel that way, Maria. We'll always be here for you," Green chimed out, smiling at her. He turned his gaze to Red and then quickly adverted it. Maria raised and eyebrow – was he already thinking about leaving him? Or was he having second thoughts about Red's true character? Maria giggled.
She couldn't wait for Red's demise.
(POV Change: Red)
It was a dark and gloomy day. The sky was weeping. Red was laying down in an empty field completely drenched. Green had been sentenced to jail a few days ago – and Red was crushed. The man he loved dearly was no longer able to be by his side – even if Green did hate him. Just the thought of not even being able to see Green from his bedroom window when he'd walk around their small town made him depressed. Even if he couldn't hang out with Green like he used to do when they were younger he just wanted to see that Green was okay. That he was happy and well.
But now he couldn't see Green. He couldn't make sure that he was doing well and was happy in life – Green was going to be in jail for a long, long time. Red was there when they found him guilty but he didn't find out how long Green would be in jail for – but when he did, it ate him alive, devouring all hope he had to see Green again. Green was to be incarcerated for the next twenty-five years to life. He would get a chance at parole but he wouldn't be up for it for at least ten years and it wasn't like Green would want Red to visit him.
Green hated Red – and Red knew he'd never see him again. Red knew that everything that happened was his fault. If only he had let Green win that day then maybe everything would be okay. If only he had told Green how he really felt about him – Maybe there was a chance Green felt the same way and was just confused. They grew up in a very conservative down where homosexuality was looked down upon but that didn't stop Red's feelings from developing. Red knew that he had been told countless times how being gay was a sin – but he just didn't give a shit when it came to Green.
Everything about Green drove Red wild with love. Green was Red's ideal lover – and Red refused to stop loving him even after this. Red knew what he did was terrible and god awful but he just couldn't condemn Green for it. He loved him so dearly that he'd forgive him for everything in a heartbeat just so he could be here with him. He just wanted Green to be by his side till he the day he died.
Maybe, just maybe if Red had been brave enough they could have been together this time. Red could have helped Green adjust and accept his own feelings. Red started to bawl and held his chest. His heart was screaming with agony. He loved Green so much that it made him crazy to think he'd never see him again. Red continued to clutch his chest as his tears mixed with the sky's own tears.
Red just wanted the chance to tell Green how much he loved him – and now he'd never get that chance.
Red rolled over in the grass and held himself. He probably looked pathetic but he didn't care. What was the point of caring about anything If the man he loved wasn't here? Red rolled onto his back and raised a hand up into the air as if he was waiting for someone to grab his hand. He wouldn't give up on Green. He was going to sit here through all the years and wait for him. He didn't care if he had to wait fifty years. Red wanted Green to know how much he loved him.
Red sat up and looked around the field. No one was here with him. He was all alone – and Red decided to stay alone. Red got up to his feet and started back to Pallet Town as the sky continued to cry for him. He walked to his house and one he was inside, he went to his room. He gathered all of his Pokemon into their pokeballs. All of them except Pikachu. Pikachu never liked being in his ball and Red wasn't going to bother with forcing him into his ball. Red told Pikachu to come with him and Pikachu jumped onto his shoulder – excited as always for an adventure.
But their adventure wasn't a far one. It was to Oak's house. Once Oak opened the door, Oak gasped. Red was completely drenched and looked defeated. Oak welcomed Red in and Red trudged into the house slowly. Red was slumped as he walked and his head hung low. Oak patted Red on the back and then Red busted into tears. Oak was startled and continued to pat Red on the back.
"R-red what's wrong? Is everything all right?" Oak asked, trying his best to console Red. Red started to weep harder and threw himself into Oak, hugging him. Oak, startled and confused, hugged him back.
"What's wrong, Red?" Oak asked, patting his back lightly. Red looked up and Oak got his answer from Red's eyes.
Red was alone – and Oak knew why he felt like this. Oak was also Sad that his grandson was gone. He had Daisy but lately she had been keeping herself locked away in her room to mourn. He was alone as well. Oak stopped hugging Red and grabbed his shoulders lightly. Oak looked Red in the eyes and took a breath.
"We all miss him, Red. Even with what he did, we miss him too. I'll never be able to forgive him for what he did to his own Pokemon but I miss him so damn much too. He was the best Grandson I could have ever gotten," Oak rambled out, trying his best to not choke up and cry as well. Red lowered his gaze and took a deep breath. He gazed up at Oak.
"I love him, Professor Oak. I love Green. I just want him back here with us. I just want him to be with me again," Red blurted out as he started to cry again. Oak hugged Red again as Red's body shook with such sadness.
"We do too, Red," Oak cried out. Oak started to cry when he heard Daisy's bedroom door open. She started down the stairs and Oak jumped back. He didn't want Daisy to get the wrong idea as to why he was holding Red. Oak was flustered. He calmed himself down when Daisy finally appeared from the bottom of the staircase. Daisy's eyes were swollen and her skin looked pale. You could tell she had been crying herself – and she didn't look like she got much sleep either. Daisy frowned but then quickly flashed a smile at Red, trying her best to seem okay. Daisy walked over to Red and hugged him. Red was shocked as he didn't move.
"You're always welcome over here, Red. It'd be kinda nice to see you here since...," Was all Daisy said before trailing off. She didn't finish her sentence as she didn't want anymore crying to happen. Daisy knew they were all sad and grieving in their own ways but they all were shedding tears – and she couldn't take it anymore. Daisy hugged Red tighter.
"We'll all be here for each other!" Daisy yelled out, keeping her tight hug going on Red. Red didn't say anything or move a muscle. Oak raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. Daisy let Red go and Red slumped his shoulders and put his hands in his pockets. He hung his head low and shook his head 'no'. Daisy tilted her head.
"No?" Daisy questioned, trying her best to figure out why in earth he would say 'no'. Red raised his head and looked at Daisy and Oak, trying his best to not cry anymore than he had. He rummaged through his pockets and pulled out all of his Pokeballs. He held them out to Daisy and Oak.
"I'm sorry," was all Red said. He handed them to Oak and Daisy and turned his back on their astonished looks to Pikachu. He bent down and patted Pikachu on the head. He picked Pikachu up and then turned back to Daisy. He handed Pikachu off to her and turned his back to them again. He clenched his fists, as if he was trying to stop from crying again.
"I'm sorry but I need to be alone. I can't take care of them when I'm a mess myself. Please watch over my Pokemon – until I can take care of them again. Please," Red pleaded, refusing to turn to them. He started to shake. He was going to cry again. He was about to shed tears when Oak spoke up.
"Alright. I'll watch over them. Let me know when –" was all Oak got out before Red bolted out the front door. Oak and Daisy stood in confusion as they watched Red leave their sight. Oak and Daisy looked over at each other. Now they had all of Red's Pokemon to take care of plus deal with their own. Daisy sighed and huffed as she carried Pikachu up to her room. Oak put all of the pokeballs into his coat pocket and headed to the lab. He'd keep the stored safely until Red was able to care for them again.
Red rushed past his house and into the woods. He didn't stop until he tripped over a root sticking up from the ground. He fell and slid in the dirt, getting scratched up and dirtied. He lifted himself up from the ground and huffed. Running that much put a strain on his lungs. He stood there for a few minutes as he regained his breath. He no longer had his Pokemon to take care of. He only had to worry about himself now – and Red felt better. He'd be able to focus on himself and hopefully help fight off his heartache.
Red turned his face to the sky and breathed in deeply. He exhaled and held his hand over his heart. He was going to become a better man for Green. He wanted Green to come home to a happier place – a place that wouldn't judge Green for what he did. A place that was in much better shape than it was now – a town. No, Red wanted Green to be welcomed to a city. A city full of like minded individuals that wouldn't care about ones past but instead help them raise to be their best. A city where he and Green could live together happily without a care in the world.
Red was going to make the world better for Green.
Red wasn't sure where he'd start with that but first he'd have to build himself up. He'd have to make a name for himself and get people to believe in turning Pallet Town from a small and quaint town into a bustling city. He could have it called Pallet City! Red's face beamed with excitement and determination. He wanted Green to be welcomed home with open arms – and he was going to make that happen. No matter what.
(POV Change: Jesse)
Jesse was sitting in the woman's restroom, focusing on staying calm. She absolutely hated how Red was her boss – he wasn't the same easy going twerp when he first joined Team Rocket. He had did a complete 180 after a few years – and Jesse was convinced it was because he was influenced by Giovanni and various other cruel Team Rocket leaders. It was as if they had brain washed him into a vessel of pure hate and animosity – but it seemed that he was slowly losing that part of him. Yes, he did just threaten her but that's because she knew what he did. She knew he was a vile monster for what he did but at the same time she felt sad for him. He made an incredibly tough choice– a choice that she knew he'd regret for the rest of his life. Jesse sighed – she knew he did everything for a reason. It was all for Green and she knew how important Green was to him.
She didn't always know. At first, she took his constant, annoying ,rambling about Green as him missing his best friend. When she stumbled upon some unsent love letter Red had written, she got the idea quick and knew Red was in love with Green – and Jesse was absolutely charmed at how eloquently Red exclaimed his love in each letter but she noticed he was becoming more obsessive in each letter – as if he was growing more and more in love with him each and everyday to the point of insanity. She was enthralled with reading the love letters until Red caught her in the middle of reading on. Red raced up to Jesse and grabbed all the letters and turned his back to her, claiming she was misunderstanding everything. Jesse rolled her eyes and told him it was fine, that she found his love for Green adorable. Red turned and smiled brightly.
"R-really? It's not gross or … weird?" Red mumbled out embarrassed. Jesse laughed and waved him off.
"It's not weird at all, Red. It's endearing. I never thought a man like you could love someone so much. It all makes sense now," Jesse chimed out, as she crossed her arms and smiled at Red. Red tilted his head and Jesse rolled his eyes.
"I understand why you're so excited he's being released from jail. I'm glad that Giovanni could pull some strings to get him released early," Jesse said. Red looked at her with a slight blush covering his cheeks. Jesse smirked. She stood up out of his office desk and noticed some laboratory reports from the cancer testing group – and they looked grim. Jesse picked them up and Red walked over, grabbing the reports from her. Jesse raised an eyebrow. Everything written on the report was about 'terminating the program due to budget and lack of results'.
"What exactly does that report mean? What do they mean when they're -" was all Jesse got out when Red crumbled the reports up in his hand and threw them in the trash can. He turned to Jesse and she saw tears in his eyes.
"I have no other choice. I can't argue with the higher ups. I caused all this and now I must deal with it," Red mumbled out, adverting her eyes. Jesse's mouth dropped.
"W-what do you mean? That we're going to release all the patients back into normal society? They'll cause whatever the hell we've created to spread. We have to keep trying to cure them, Red!" Jesse yelled out, storming up and grabbing Red by the collar. Red refused to look her in the eyes and bit his lip.
"There's nothing we can do to cure them, Jesse. I'm sorry. I've stayed up countless nights looking for a cure but I- I can't save them Jesse and I can't let everything I've done for this city go to waste. I have to do this. I have to give up what we've worked so hard. I'm really sorry, Jesse," Red cried out. Jesse threw her hands off him and glared at him.
"So, you're just going to let them suffer and then die a painful death then? Just tell them, "Sorry, we tried" and leave them to die?!" Jesse yelled, tears welling in her eyes. Red lowered his head and shook his head, saying 'no'. Jesse raised an eyebrow, waiting for his answer.
"We're going to dispose of them. Quickly. So they feel no pain – and they will cover it up like nothing ever happened," Red spat out, refusing to once again look at Jesse. Jesse's mouth hung open in pure shock. She couldn't believe what he said to her. Jesse shook her head, marched right up to Red and punched him in the cheek. Red crashed down to floor. He gazed up at her with tears and anger fighting for control. Jesse spat on him
Fuck you and all of the Team Rocket Higher- Ups! Fuck you all! How could you?! They were just to test subjects wanting to make some fast cash for their families since they were so poor and this is how you repay them?! By killing them after making them suffer?! And they then get erased off the face of the earth?! What the hell?!" Jesse yelled out as she swiftly kicked him on the side. Red gasped and held his side and Jesse turned her back to him.
"You're a goddamn monster, Red," Jesse spat out as she ran out of the room. Red didn't chase after her or anything. He sat there and swallowed hard. He was a goddamn monster.
But it was all for Green – and he wasn't going to let some test subjects ruin his dream of the perfect city where he and Green could live together in peace. If he didn't dispose of them, he'd have to return all the funds used to make Pallet City come true – and he didn't have that kind of money. He'd watch as his city turn into nothing but a wasteland – and how would Green react to that?
He'd hate Red even more – and Red wouldn't blame him. Red stood up and wiped the tears away from his eyes. He looked up to the office ceiling and sighed.
"I'm sorry. Please forgive me, Arceus. I know what I'm doing is certainly going to be the reason I burn after I die but I can't let all my hard work go to waste. I love Green. I always will and I want to build the perfect place for him and I to live together – even if it means I have to kill for it," Red mumbled out, praying aloud. Red turned towards his desk and started to straighten it back up. He'd have to talk to Jesse and James more about this whole debacle. But that'd have to wait until Jesse cooled down.
He didn't feel like getting punched again. Or kicked.
Jesse sighed to herself. She knew that Red wasn't meaning to be an awful man. He just wanted Green's love and for him to be happy. Jesse knew that but at the same time, she could never forgive him for what he did. She knew what this city meant for Red but to her, this city could burn to the ground for all she cared. It was tainted with blood – blood that was on Red's hands and the Team Rocket Higher-ups.
Jesse stood up and walked out of the bathroom. She needed to find James so they could finish hanging up the posters and then head home. She was tired from everything that happened tonight. Especially having to deal with Green,Maria and Red. And then it hit her. Jesse gasped. Maria was with Red. Maria wanted revenge on the person that destroyed her family and happy life. Jesse felt a lump in her throat and she started to sweat.
She reached into her pocket and grabbed her cellphone. She'd always condemn Red for what he did but she didn't think he needed to be hurt for what he did – or even killed for it. There was already enough bloodshed that had happened in this town and she definitely didn't want anymore to happen. She had to warn Red about Maria.
She had to protect Red from any type of harm. She'd hate to see any of his hard work go to waste – she'd even hate to see the twerp get injured. Even after everything that happened, she just wanted Red to be happy and that could only happen if Green was happy.
And Maria would ruin it all.
(POV Change: Green)
Green, Red and Maria had finally reached Dylan's Bakery. They all entered and the bell rang, alerting Dylan that someone had entered his bakery. He walked out to say he was closed but smiled instead.
"I'm glad you guys found each other. Maria called me and I was just now getting ready to leave and meet her at the Pokémon center. What are you all doing here so late though?." Dylan asked, smiling brightly at them all. He waved them all to come join him behind the counter and they all walked back. Green scratched the back of his head as if he was embarrassed.
"Well, we don't have much to make at home for dinner and a lot of the nearby grocery stores are closed so we thought maybe you'd have leftovers we could have," Green said, as he tried his best not to get red in the face. Red glanced between Dylan and Green as Dylan stared blankly at them – and then he laughed. He laughed so hard he held onto his stomach. Green narrowed his brow and began to pout while Maria joined in with the laughter. Red just shook his head with a faint smile tugging on his lips.
"Of course I do! I always cook way too much food for myself. Just give me a moment and I'll heat them up for you," Dylan laughed out, as he headed to the kitchen. Green sighed and started walking after Dylan when he heard Red's cellphone go off. Red sighed.
"That's probably Jesse and James calling to complain about something. I'll be right back," Red said, as he started for the door. Maria looked like she wanted to stop Red but Green grabbed her shoulders and pushed her along with him. She seemed irritated but Green ignored it. She was probably just hungry and just wanted to have a nice peaceful dinner with them.
"Don't worry, Maria. He'll be back in a flash. It's just a silly business call," Green said, trying his best to reassure her. Maria rolled her eyes and mumbled to herself. She stomped into the kitchen and Green sighed.
"I'll have to talk to Red about silencing his phone when we're having family time," Green whispered to himself, slightly disappointed in Maria quick mood change. Green turned towards Red , who was outside taking the call, when he noticed Red looked confused and slightly panicked. Green tilted his head when Maria pulled at his shirt.
"Mister Green, Dylan has our food ready for us," Maria said, with a faint smile back on her lips. Green smiled and rustled her hair causing her to laugh.
"Alright, let's go sit down and wait for Red. I'm sure he'll join us shortly," Green said, as they walked into the kitchen. When Green walked in he saw Dylan on the ground, with a knife in his gut. Green gasped and darted right to Dylan. He sat down on the ground and held Dylan in his arms.
"D-Dylan?! Dylan! Are you alright?! What happened?!" Green yelled, shaking Dylan trying to get a response from him. Green snapped his vision to Maria – or where she had been. Maria was gone. Green quickly looked back at Dylan and noticed he was starting to go pale. Green reached in his pocket for his cellphone when he suddenly felt a knife against his throat.
"I wouldn't do that if I was you, Mister Green. Not yet at least," Maria spat out, pressing the knife closer to his throat. Green swallowed hard and tried to turn towards her but Maria moved the knife in a threatening manner that caused Green to stop.
"W-what are you doing, Maria?!" Green asked, confused and scared at the whole situation. Maria just laughed and shook her head.
"You know, I was going to wait. I was going to tell you the truth and then let you do my dirty work for me but I don't think I can wait that long. Now that I know it was him, I'm going to do what he did to me. I'm going to take the people he loves most away from him," Maria spat out, as she moved the knife to the other side of his neck. She was getting ready to cut when Dylan jumped up, grunting with pain. Maria gasped and while she was shocked, Green grabbed the knife and pushed her away from him. Green held the knife in his hand and looked down at Maria. Maria's face screamed with fear and Green glowered at her.
"What in the fuck is going on, Maria?"
