Chapter 15: Fire and missing pup

The pups all looked at Marshal in astonishment.

"Marshal, why didn't you tell us you had a brother," Chase asked.

"I, I was ashamed, of what I did to him," Marshal said, tears still flowing from his eyes.

"What did you do to him," Rocky asked.

"Rocky, that's a bit personal, can't you see that Marshal has already been through a lot," Chase reprimanded.

"No Chase don't, it needs to come out, the truth. You see, before Ryder found me, Spot and I were in the hands of an owner who cared more about alcohol then us, he barely knew we existed and when he did, abused us any way possible. And one day I couldn't take the beatings anymore and so, I, I ran, without telling Spot." Marshal said, shuttering at the memories that haunted his mind.

Marshal buried his face in his paws and wept. Chase walked over to him and began to gently stroke his fur.

"Why don't the rest of you go on back to the lookout, I'll take Marshal home when he's ready," Chase said.

"Good idea, I'll take his fire truck back with us." Ryder said.

After the pups left, Chase returned to Marshals side. Chase stroked Marshals fur for a long time. After what seemed like an eternity of silence, Chase broke it by speaking some words of encouragement to Marshal.

"Oh, Marsh, I'm so sorry that you were abused so much, but leaving Spot alone lick that wasn't right," Chase said.

"I know, I regret it with all my heart, it's my fault that Spot is like that." Marshal cried, his face returning to his paws.

"No Marshal, you might have influenced it, but Spot chose that path not you," Chase said.

"Chase, I need some time alone, please."

Chase nodded and left Marshal alone on the cliff. Marshal looked towards the heavens and howled as loud as he possibly could. He collapsed onto his belly and prayed.

"Jesus, Jesus, Great God, Yahweh, Help me for I am a sinful dog, please help me with my past sin, forgive me, but forgive Spot as well for I am the reason he did this, please let spot take his anger out on me, for I rightfully deserve it, but Everest's paws are clean, please don't let Spot harm Everest, Amen." Marshal cried out to the God of the heavens, the God of the Bible.

After his prayer to Yahweh Marshal got up and went back to Jakes cabin. Chase was waiting in his cruiser. Chase and Marshal drove back home, and went to bed when they got back. Marshal tried to go to sleep, he tossed and turned and failed to fall asleep. Marshal got up and walked over to the cliff by the lookout. He takes Everest tag out of his pack. He clutches the now sacred relic in his paws and begins to cry again. Marshal's crying reaches Chase's ears, Chase got up and walked over to Marshal.

"Hay Marsh, are you alright," Chase asked in a soothing tone.

"No, gah, I just can't sleep until I know that my Evey is safe, I'm sorry you have to see me like this," Marshal said covering his face with his paws.

Chase then embraces Marshal in the biggest, longest hug they had ever shared.

"We're going to catch Spot, and his gang, and we are going to get Everest back." Chase reassured.

"Just promise me one thing," Marshal said.

"What's that," Chase asked.

"Leave My brother to me; I'm the one who needs to confront him." Marshal said.

"Understood, and that is a promise brother." Chase said.

"PAW Patrol, to the lookout, quickly," Ryder called over their pup tags.

"Uh oh, that sounds bad, come on lets go," Chase said.

The pups all rush into the elevator, but this time Marshal didn't trip and knock them all over.

"Marshal you didn't trip and knock us over like always," Skye said with surprise.

"I'm sorry Skye, I'm not really in a funny mood right now," Marshal said with a sad face.

"I understand Marshal, its okay," Skye said.

"The elevator goes up and the pups get into formation.

"PAW Patrol ready for action Ryder sir," Chase said with authority.

"Sorry to interrupt your sleep pups, but we have an emergency; Farmer Yumi's barn is on fire! The cause of the fire is currently unknown, so for this mission I need Chase, I need you and you cones to keep people and animals back, I also need you to investigate and find out the cause of the fire." Ryder said.

"Chase is on the case," Chase said with confidence.

"I also need, Marshal and Zuma, I need you two to fight and put out the fire and rescue any animals inside the barn." Ryder said.

"I'm fired up."

"Let's dive in," Responded the two pups.

"Alright, PAW Patrol is on a roll," Ryder said, sliding down his fireman pole and onto his ATV.

Marshal, Chase, and Zuma all slide down the slide and into their rescue vehicles. The pups rid of to save the day! When the pups arrived on the seine, Chase set up a perimeter to keep people back, Zuma starts to hose down the flames, while Marshal runs into the blaze to rescue the poor animals trapped in the barn.

The pups were so busy with the fire that they didn't notice the 3 sets of eyes, watching their every move from behind a pile of hay bales. Spot and his gang watched the pups very carefully. They're plan was to try and capture one or more of the pups. Zuma was fighting the fire, his back to the pile of hay bales that the gang was hiding in. Ruben saw his chance and began to make his move. But Spot stopped him with a paw.

"Patience my friend, all good things come to those that wait," Spot said with an evil grin.

A little while later Marshal came darting out of the blazing barn with a young lamb on his back.

"I think that's all of them," Marshal said.

"Great dude, now let's get this fire out," Zuma said.

Suddenly a sound reached Zuma's ears.

"Wait did you hear that," Zuma said his ears standing up on his head.

"Hear what Zuma," Marshal asked.

"I thought I heard something," Zuma said.

"Help, please somebody help me," came a voice from somewhere in the barn.

"Oh no, there's still somebody in there, I'll find him," Zuma said, rushing back into the blazing fire.

A few minutes go by, the barn starts to creak and groan. Marshal knew that the barn was about to collapse, he called Zuma on his pup tag.

"Zuma, can you hear me, you need to find the victim and get out of there, the barn is going to collapse any second now, hurry." Marshal said with a sense of urgency.

"Copy that Marshal dude, I'm almost, what hay, ahhh," Zuma screamed suddenly loosing pup tag connection.

"Zuma, Zuma what's wrong," Marshal said with concern.

Then there was a loud cracking sound. Marshal looked up and was horrified to see the barn cave in on itself, burying Zuma inside!

"Zuma, ZUMA, NO," Marshal bellowed.

The team scrambles to find him through the burning rubble. The searched and searched but all they could find was Zuma's pup tag and pup pack.

"No, NOOO, gah, how many friends am I going to lose today, ah, I can't take it anymore," Marshal cried.

Marshal ran back to his fire truck and raced back to the lookout, tears filling his eyes. Rocky saw Marshal drive up to the lookout and went to ask him how it went.

"Hay, Marshal, how'd it go," Rocky asked.

"Gah, not good Rock, not good," Marshal said holding his head in his paws.

"Oh come on, you and Zuma are like the best fire pups around, how bad," Rocky started, but was cut off by Marshals voice.

"Ah, ZUMA IS DEAD, I, I'm sorry" Marshal yelled, tears falling from his eyes.

Rocky stared at Marshal in disbelief. Marshal hung his head and walked into his pup house. The other pups came out just as Ryder and Chase returned to the look out.

"Ryder, is it true, is Zuma," Rocky said, nearly chocking on his words.

"I'm afraid so Rock, all we found left of him was his tag and his pack." Ryder said with sadness.

Rocky collapsed on his belly and cried.

"No, no, not Zuma, no," wailed Rocky.

The pups all started to cry for Zuma.

"No, Zuma, not Zuma," Rubble cried.

"No, why Zuma, he was such a good pup, why him," Skye cried.

"He died trying to save someone from the fire, He died a hero." Marshal said.

"But we never gave him any praise for his service. He died without knowing how much we appreciate his work, without knowing how much we love him." Rocky wept.

The pups all hung their heads as they realized that Rocky was right. The never did give Zuma glory for his rescues and the never did tell him how much he was loved and appreciated.

"Pups, I know it's a very sad night, but it is late, and we don't know what tomorrow will bring and we need to get some rest, so please try to get some sleep," Ryder said.

The pups all sadly went to their pup houses. It was the saddest day in the history of the PAW Patrol. But what the pups didn't realize was that this was just the beginning of the storm of pain heading they're way.

What! Zuma, no not him, he is my favorite pup, why him, find out what happens next, next week on Adventures of the PAW Patrol
