Chapter 6: A Challenge and an Incentive

The Culinary Institute Market had closed for the day, but while the employees had gone home and security was busy looking out for trespassers, there was still some activity pertaining to the institute taking place, more specifically on the top floor of the market. The top floor was where corporate offices were and during the day, important matters of business took place, such as the buying and selling of goods and making sure they were of top quality to meet with the institute's standards. While other things, like advertising and worldwide expansion are discussed on this floor, quality food always took high priority as the Culinary Institute had a reputation to maintain.

While the usual business had concluded until the next day, there was still activity on the floor, more specifically, in the war room. Inside, four men and one woman occupied the room, sitting around a long table with the men sitting opposite of each other and the woman, Amane Hikawa, sitting at the head of the table. The two chefs that sat the nearest to her were Chef Toshihiro and Chef Yutaka. Besides them were two other chefs, one that was red haired and looked very fit and filled out in his blue chef's uniform rather snugly and another who had a golden uniform who was grey haired and, much like Chef Yutaka, had a belly on him. They were all eating ribs with a side of cornbread and salad and seemed to be enjoying it, especially the head of Culinary Council herself, who was making sounds of approval as she savored the taste of the ribs.

"I must say...Chef Ben Yamaguchi...that these ribs are excellent," Amane complimented the blue uniformed chef as she took another bite.

"Thank you kindly, Ms. Hikawa," Ben responded with a bow. "It is my own special BBQ rub, so you may notice a bit more of a spicy kick."

"Must it always be about heat and spice with you?" Yutaka asked, rolling his eyes up.

"I'm always about the heat, Yutaka," Ben said with a smirk. "I spent years in America mastering the spiciest of recipes. Puts hairs on the chest and makes the women howl in joy."

"The ribs do have a sweet side, though," the chef in the golden uniform pointed out.

"I put a little more brown sugar in the rub to balance out the pepper, Chef Ken Chang," Ben said, his expression turning rather smug. He then looked at Toshihiro and asked. "How about you, Toshihiro? Does the old war horse approve of my take on an American classic?"

Toshihiro, who had finished his plate and had his eyes closed, responded gruffly, "It is adequate, Chef Yamaguchi."

"You really know how to hurt a guy," pouted Ben.

"I'm glad that everyone here is enjoying themselves," Amane smiled as she finished her ribs. After wiping her lips with a napkin, she addressed the chefs, "But now we have a little business to discuss."

"It must be important for you to call all of us here," Ken said with curiosity.

"Then I can assume you have another special battle in mind, Ms. Hikawa," Ben smirked.

"Indeed I do," Amane smirked back as she took out a photo from her cleavage. "My niece, one Kodachi Kuno, has suggested a special match that plays to the strengths of this lovely young lady in the photo."

Amane slid the photo on the table. The one who took it first was Toshihiro and as he was inspecting it, his eyebrows were raised. The picture was that of a red headed teenage girl with a pig tail. The picture looked crumpled up and torn in a few places and the girl in the photo seemed unaware that she was being photographed. It took him a few seconds to recognize the girl as he handed the photo to Yutaka.

"She was at the coliseum with Ms. Kuno during my final match," Toshihiro said. "Out of everyone in the arena, she paid close attention to my Kitchen Squad technique."

"She must be the friend Ms. Kuno was talking about when she came to my diner," Yutaka said as he observed the photo.

"A very beautiful friend," Ben said as he snatched the photo from Yutaka. He began to ogle at it, which gained the disapproval of his colleagues. "Well, she is lovely and I bet she can turn many heads. Wonder if she's single and willing to work for me."

"Must you do this?" asked Ken, narrowing his eyes at Ben as he took the photo. After observing it, he turned his attention to Amane and asked, "Who is she, Ms. Hikawa?"

"From what Kodachi told me, she is a student of the Saotome School of Anything Goes Martial Arts," Amane began to explain. "She has been studying and practicing the art since before she could walk under the tutelage of Genma Saotome, the master of school. She is currently staying at the Tendo Dojo. While that doesn't scream chef material, it has given me an idea for a match that the coliseum crowd can get behind on. A martial arts cooking battle with nothing held back."

"Ooh, it does sound exciting," Yutaka said, gleefully intrigued as he clapped his hands.

"A knock out, drag out kitchen combat," Ben smiled, also intrigued as he folded his arms. "Hell, I used to practice boxing, wrestling and some judo. I'm game enough for this."

"I don't know," Ken muttered, frowning. "I haven't fought in a tournament since I was in junior high and I could be a bit rusty."

"It does sound interesting, Ms. Hikawa," Toshiro mused. He then looked at Amane and asked, "But this young lady...you say she's talented in the martial arts, but does she have the necessary skills for the Culinary Combat environment?"

"A valid question, Chef Toshiro," Yutaka pointed out. He then turned to Amane and said, "Hopefully this young lady isn't just bringing her good looks to the ring."

"I've already worked things out with Kodachi," Amane responded to the two chef's doubts. "Make no mistake about it, chefs. We will have a unique battle and the people will just eat it up."

"So does the little lady have a name?" asked Ken.

"Her name is...quite an interesting one," Amane answered, though she looked thoughtful. "It's like my niece had thought of it herself."

The next afternoon...

Standing in the middle of the Tendo Dojo with his eyes shut, his arms crossed and hunched over, Ranma let of a low growl as he tried to concentrate, trying to remember the exact movements he had seen the day before from Chef Toshihiro in that cooking match. Seeing it in person amazed him and many thoughts ran through his head on how it could be used in a fight. He hated to admit it, but Kodachi had shown him something extraordinary and would love to have that technique as part of his arsenal. He had committed the chef's movements to memory and felt he was ready to emulate it.

Instantly, Ranma spread out his arms and roared, "Kitchen Squad: Triple Attack!"

Ranma stood there, waiting for something to happen. He waited for a sensation, a tingle or himself literally tearing himself apart. He wanted to feel something, anything to indicate that the technique was working.

He felt nothing.

Annoyed, Ranma repeated the movements and each time he did, he grew angrier and angrier. Nothing he did was working and it was frustrating him. After what seemed the hundredth time he repeated the movement, Ranma fell to his knees and let out a growl as banged both his fists to the floor.

"What the hell am I doing wrong!?" Ranma yelled.

"Ranma, what's the matter?" a concerned voice asked.

Ranma stiffened and turned around. At the entrance of the training hall was Kasumi, who looked worried. Ranma's expression softened as he got up. He walked up to her with a very awkward smile while scratching the back of his head.

"So...long have you been there?" asked Ranma.

"Long enough," Kasumi responded. "That was...quite the interesting exercise you were doing there."

"It wasn't an exercise, Kasumi," Ranma groaned as he began to explain. "I was trying to emulate a technique that I saw at that Culinary Combat event from yesterday. That Tosihiro guy split into three people and was going to town on his side of the arena. He didn't need any help and was making his opponents look like a bunch of amateurs."

"It does sound unbelievable," Kasumi said, astonished. "Then again, so do cursed pools in China and using a wooden sword to make gale force attacks."

"I'm usually good with this sort of thing," sighed Ranma as he folded his arms. "Whenever I'm in a fight, I usually adapt to my opponent's style and there are times when I can learn their special moves on the fly. Toshihiro's technique looks simple enough, but maybe I'm missing something. I just can't figure out what."

"It probably took Chef Toshihiro time to master it," Kasumi suggested. "Maybe you just need a little patience, Ranma. Not everything can be learned in an instant."

"Eh, patience was never one of my stronger suits," Ranma shrugged.

"Neither was taking the time to work on your school studies, but I know you can manage patience," Kasumi said with a knowing smile.

"You're never going to let me go on that, are you ma'am?" Ranma sighed as she shook his head.

"As long as you're here, you can make do, young man," Kasumi said as she put her hands on her hips. "Though studies can wait for now. I'm about to serve lunch."

"I can get behind that," Ranma said with a smile. "After you, Ms. Tendo."

Ranma and Kasumi were about to head back into the house when they heard the sounds of trumpets. Ranma became alert as he remembered the tune from the Culinary Combat event. He followed the sound to the entrance of the Tendo home with Kasumi following him. What they found were two trumpet players standing a few from each other in front of a banner stand that was blocking the entrance. The banner itself was royal red with a logo that depicted a golden cooking knife with a crown on top of the handle and a golden ring surrounding it. On the ring, the words Honor, Glory and Taste were written on them. Ranma and Kasumi wondered what was going on until the trumpet players stopped playing, setting their instruments to the side.

"Behold, Tendo Dojo, descending from the heavens...our Head of the Culinary Council and the Culinary Champions of Japan!" the trumpet players bellowed as they pointed to the sky.

Looking up to the sky, Ranma and Kasumi saw five people coming down in blue jumpsuits, goggles and helmets, much to their surprise. Seconds later, the five individuals yanked their cords and let out their parachutes. They soon landed on the grounds of the Tendo home and wasted no time in dashing towards the banner after unhooking their parachutes. With the five individuals now standing behind the banner, they each took off their helmets and with a swift motion, took off their jumpsuits. Four of those individuals were men in multicolored chef uniforms and the one in the middle was a short haired blonde woman wearing a red blazer with matching red skirt and a white blouse with a jabot collar, a blue jewel adorning it. Ranma and Kasumi were left speechless at this and really couldn't believe what was going on.

"American Culinary Champion...Ben!" yelled out the chef in the blue uniform while he flexed his arms.

"Chinese Culinary Champion...Ken!" yelled out the chef in gold, taking out two chopping knives, twirling them and finally striking pose and raising his knives above his head.

"French Culinary Champion...Yutaka!" the chef in red bellowed as he let out a flurry of punches and finished with a high kick.

"Japanese Culinary Champion...Toshihiro!" the chef in black yelled as he crossed his arms.

"Head of the Culinary Council...Amane!" the woman in red yelled, placing one hand on her hip while raising her other arm.

Finally, all five in unison, shouted, "We are the Kitchen Squadron...Culinary Champions!"

As a lone breeze passed through the Tendo property, Ranma and Kasumi could only stare at the five individuals with dumbfounded expressions. Both were asking themselves what could these people want that warranted to come here in such a fashion. It wasn't long after that the rest of the residents of the Tendo home joined Ranma and Kasumi to see what was going on. Genma, in panda form, lifted a sign that said, "Not an everyday occurrence this is" while Soun had a curious expression on his face. Nabiki simply had an eyebrow raised and Akane just looked as confused as Ranma and Kasumi.

The first one to react was Kasumi as she made a polite bow and greeted, "Oh, welcome to the Tendo home."

"Uh, yes, welcome," Soun greeted awkwardly.

"And you must be Mr. Tendo," Amane smiled as she walked up to Soun with an extended hand. "Simply put, I have a deal for you."

It didn't take long for Tendo residents and the Culinary Champions to gather in the living room. On one side of the table sat Soun with Akane and Nabiki sitting on his left while Kasumi, Ranma and Genma sat on his right. On the other side of the table sat the Culinary Champions with Amane sitting in the middle with Toshihiro and Yutaka sitting on her left while Ken and Ben sat to her right. As the guests were busy sipping their drinks and eating snacks, the Tendo residents wondered why four chefs and their ring leader were here.

As for Ranma, he was looking intently at Toshihiro and the memories of kitchen squadron technique came back in full force. He wanted to ask how he had been able to do it, but stayed silent because he didn't want to raise any suspicion that could expose his secret that he didn't want to explain to the guests. As much as it pained him, Ranma exercised patience and waited to see what the Head of the Culinary Institute wanted.

Soun was the first one to speak up and asked, "So...what brings you to my humble dojo...um...?"

"The name is Hikawa...Amane Hikawa," responded Amane with a purr, smiling slyly as she took out a business card from inside of her blazer. "You can call me Amane if you wish, Mr. Tendo. Forgive me for the way I and my champions introduced ourselves, but I felt that I needed to make an impact before I made my intentions known."

"Oh, no harm done," Soun assured as he took the business card from Amane After looking over it, he read the card out loud, "Amane Hikawa, Head of the Culinary Council, Culinary Combat Promoter and President and Owner of Global Foods and Beverages. That is quite a resume, Ms. Amane."

"You're too kind, Mr. Tendo," Amane said, sounding humble. "As to why I am here...it is because of my niece, one Kodachi Kuno."

At the mention of the Kuno heiress' name, the Tendo residents tensed up, with Ranma sporting a frown and Kasumi looking worried.

"My delightful niece had a wonderful idea for a Culinary Combat contest," Amane began to explain. "She had invited a friend to the Culinary Institute Market to shop and even took in to seeing the Culinary Combat in my coliseum under said market. From what Kodachi tells me, she was impressed with the actions of Chef Toshihiro, including his Kitchen Squad technique. I'm here to offer her the chance to learn it from Toshihiro himself...provided she can take part in Culinary Combat with an opponent of my choosing."

"Hey, I'm all for that!" Ranma said with excitement as he got up. "We can get started right...now...if...you...want…"

As Ranma trailed off, he realized that in his excitement that he had almost blown his secret and sat back down, looking sheepish. Kasumi could only shake her head at Ranma's eagerness getting the better of him while Akane rolled her eyes up and Nabiki placed her hand on her face. Soun looked at Ranma with disappointment and Genma pulled up a sign that said "Foolish boy". As for Amane and the chefs, they looked at Ranma oddly.

Clearing her throat, Amane continued, "Kodachi has mentioned you as well, Ranma Saotome. I can see that her description of you does not do you justice. Just by looking at you I can see that you have the talent to compete in Culinary Combat. But my offer only extends to the Saotome School's other martial artist...Hanako Sakura."

"Say what!?" the Tendo residents shouted in confusion, though Genma, with a panicked expression, pulled up a sign that said, "Other student!?"

"Yes, Kodachi has told me so much about her," Amane said as she took out a photo of Ranma in his girl form. "A red headed orphan taken in by the school's master and taught the ways of the martial arts along with her big brother surrogate, Ranma Saotome. My niece also says that Hanako is in a bit of a fix here, along with her with her big brother."

Ranma scowled as he heard Amane tell her story. After what had happened the night before, he knew that Kodachi wasn't going to leave well enough alone and she didn't waste any time exacting whatever plan she had in mind. It angered him that Kodachi just couldn't take a hint and he really wanted to find her and give her a piece of his mind.

"And what fix is Kodachi talking about?" Ranma asked, his teeth clenched.

"That you and Hanako are being held against your will by a devil and his three witches...with one of them using you as a toy to satiate her lusts," Amane responded.

"Now see here!" Soun shouted, slamming his hands on the table.

"I don't know what Kodachi's problem is, but Kasumi is not a witch!" Ranma shouted as he stood up. "She's been nothing but welcoming since I got here and she has gone above and beyond for me! I don't deserve to have an angel like her, but she does so much around here and she still finds time to help out a meathead like me!"

"She sacrifices enough for all of us!" Akane piped up. "Ever since mom died, Kasumi has picked up the slack while foregoing a normal life for herself! If anything, she has more class than that wanna-be princess Kuno claims to have!"

"Not to mention a strong right slap," Nabiki mentioned.

Genma, meanwhile, held up a sign that said, "A true paragon of a woman."

"She represents so much of her mother," Soun said emotionally as he got teary eyed.

"And I'll be damned if I let anyone speak badly of her," Ranma growled. "She's...she's my friend and I...I..."

Ranma couldn't bring himself to say anything anymore, feeling that he could embarrass himself or Kasumi. Worse yet, his father or Soun could get the wrong idea and try to speed up the whole engagement process. Ranma sat down and stayed quiet. He then looked over to see Kasumi's reaction and saw that she was looking away from him. Ranma frowned and looked away in embarrassment, mentally hammering himself.

'Good one, Ranma,' thought Ranma, angry at himself. 'You babble like an idiot and you made Kasumi all embarrassed. Real smooth.'

Kasumi, on the other hand, was blushing as she tried to suppress a goofy smile that was creeping up on her face. All that was running through her mind was that, as good as it was that everyone was sticking up for her, all she could think about was Ranma calling her an angel. It was such a high compliment coming from her friend and she felt unworthy. It still didn't stop her from staring at Ranma with wide eyes and when he was done, Kasumi looked away as she didn't want to show her reddened face to him.

'Ranma...you really shouldn't say things like that without thinking,' thought Kasumi, feeling embarrassed. 'Besides, making you feel welcome and helping you out with your homework doesn't merit that high of praise, right!?'

As for Amane, she felt impressed. The Tendo residents were fully behind this Kasumi Tendo, especially Ranma. Looking at how embarrassed both Ranma and Kasumi were feeling, she thought it was pretty cute.

'Kodachi, you do have some competition for that young man's heart,' Amane thought as she smirked. 'Still, there is still a bit of business to attend to.'

Clearing her throat, Amane said, "As much as I appreciate this display of loyalty to such a fine woman as Kasumi Tendo, I still would like to have Hanako's opinion about this. She is the reason why the Culinary Champions and I are here."

"She thinks the same," Ranma responded sternly.

"And yet I feel the need to hear it from her lips, Ranma," Amane said with narrowed eyes. "The challenge is for her, so she can give me the courtesy of hearing me out."

Letting out a sigh, Ranma got up and made his way upstairs. About a few moments later, Ranma came back, this time in girl form. She adjusted her clothes and made her way back to where she was sitting, her hair still damp.

"Nice of you to join us, Ms. Sakura," Amane greeted. "I see that you share your friend's fashion sense...though not his clothes size."

"Very tight around the chest area, I must say" muttered Ben with leery eyes.

"Will you stop!?" Ken hissed, shaking his head in disgust.

"Brother, lady," Ranma corrected. "Ranma and I may not share the family name, but trust me: he and I are family. We may not always be together, but I'm there for him and he's there for me. And I heard what you had to say about Kasumi and that niece of yours can shove it. Kasumi has been nothing but kind to me, my brother and that fatass I call a father. She's a saint for putting up with us and I couldn't have asked for a better friend than her. I would do anything for her but…"

"Yes, do go on, Ms. Sakura," urged Amane.

Genma pulled up a sign that said "And no need to insult your father" with his eyes narrowed.

"It's just...I want to do something to repay her kindness," Ranma continued, getting emotional. "Pops may be content with just sitting around and playing shogi while not at work, but I want to pull my weight around here. I want to help Kasumi out because she does so much and I...I just don't want to be a burden, alright!?"

"Ran...Hanako, it's alright," Kasumi assured before correcting herself.

"No, it's not, Kasumi," Ranma said, her emotions running high as she clasped Kasumi's hands together. "Let me repay your kindness, please! You help me with my homework and everything else! Let me help you with something, anything!"

"But you're a guest! I couldn't possibly-

"Please, Kasumi! I want to-

"Such devotion and friendship!" Amane exclaimed as she dabbed her tears off her cheek with a handkerchief. "A house guest wanting to repay the lady of the house for a warm hospitality! Truly this red headed beauty's heart is as big as her buxom!"

"Uh, thanks?" Ranma responded awkwardly.

"Well, this makes my offer quite easy, then," Amane continued. "Hanako, I can see that you want to prove yourself to Ms. Tendo. Since you showed a keen interest in Chef Toshihiro's Kitchen Squad Attack, why don't you participate in Culinary Combat? You can show your culinary skills not just in front of an audience, but also to Kasumi. Plus, it will be a special match: a martial arts culinary combat where you will be able to use your skills. It will be a spectacle no one will forget!"

"And I will help you in areas where you lack any skill, Ms. Sakura," Toshihiro spoke up. "I may be retired from competition, but I must make sure you are ready for a competition such as this. If you prove yourself worthy...I'll teach the secrets of my kitchen squad attack."

"And the other Culinary Champions will contribute to your training as well," Amane added. She then smirked and took out a contract and a pen from her blazer and asked, "So what do you say, Hanako Sakura? You're not afraid of a little kitchen competition, right?"

"I ain't afraid of nothing!" Ranma responded with bravado as she took the contract and pen. "I can take on anyone you put in front of me! Bring it on!"

Ranma quickly signed her name on the contract, or rather, the name her girls side was given, Hanako Sakura. She quickly handed the contract back to Amane.

"I'll have this notarized later and I'll have a combat date ready," Amane said as she looked over the contract and placed it back in her blazer. "By the way, independent Culinary Combat participants get free access and credit at the Culinary Institute Market for a month. I'd say that beats any participation trophy by a bunch."

"That is very generous of you, Ms. Hikawa," Kasumi complemented with a bow.

"I'll say," Nabiki said, sounding impressed. "If those chocolates Kasumi received are anything to go by, I'll bet anything in that store is high class."

"That it is," Amane acknowledged. She then directed her attention to Ranma and said, "Oh, and Hanako...Kodachi wants to speak to you as soon as possible. Something about an extra incentive if you win."

"Yeah, I want to give that laughing girl a piece of my mind," Ranma growled as she headed out.

"Hanako, wait," Kasumi called out to Ranma, stopping her. "Do you even know how to get to the Kuno Estate?"

Ranma was about to say something before she realized she had no idea where she was going before bowing his head sheepishly. Everybody, including the chefs, could only sigh and shake their heads. Genma also held up a sign that said "Always acts, never thinks."

"I'll write the address down for you," Nabiki spoke.

"Wait, you're not charging her anything?" Akane said, surprised.

"Yeah, I kind of figured that you don't want to exploit Kasumi's special guest," Nabiki reasoned.

It didn't take long for Ranma to find the Kuno Estate. As she got close, Ranma noticed a big building which looked like a castle that was five floors up, including a lookout point. Once she was close enough to the property, Ranma jumped up to the wall and looked around. Though she noticed various buildings, ponds and gardens, it seemed that there wasn't anyone in sight. Ranma resolved to run for the castle building with a determined expression. As she was close to the building's entrance, she noticed that Tatewaki and Sasuke were exiting it, but he kept running towards it anyway.

Upon noticing Ranma coming towards him, Tatewaki pulled out his wooden sword and bellowed, "Ranma Saotome! You dare invade the Kuno Estate without any semblance of-

Tatewaki didn't get to finish that sentence as Ranma promptly stomped his face, which also startled Sasuke.

Ranma didn't waste any time as she turned her attention towards the ninja and asked, "Where's Kodachi?"

"She's on the fourth floor," Sasuke responded, pointing towards the fourth floor. "Shall I lead you towards her room?"

"Never mind, I can find my own way," Ranma answered as he ran inside the building.

"Mr. Saotome, that would be most unwise!" Sasuke called out to Ranma but to no avail. "The building has-

In almost an instant, there were loud screams, electrical noises and one loud explosion coming from inside building. Sasuke could only watch in silence as he could hear Ranma screaming in agony. When it stopped, Sasuke sighed as he moved towards the building with a now recovered Tatewaki. Seconds later, Ranma emerged looking singed, bruised and there were some cuts on his clothes. The young man looked very unamused.

"One does not simply barge inside the Kuno Estate, Ranma Saotome," Kuno said smugly.

"The family does take their privacy seriously," Sasuke pointed out. "May I please lead you to Ms. Kuno's quarters?"

"Please do," Ranma said flatly.

Not much later, Ranma, with Sasuke's help navigating the insides of the building to avoid any more trouble, finally made it to Kodachi's door, which was adorned with a wooden sign bearing her name and a black rose. By this time, the pig tailed martial artist had fixed herself up in an effort to look somewhat presentable. Still, she also made it an effort to look stern to convey seriousness in her intent. Ranma wanted to know what Kodachi's game was and she didn't want to waste time with niceties.

"Mistress Kuno," Sasuke called out as he knocked on the door. "Ranma Saotome has arrived."

"Splendid," spoke Kodachi. "Take your leave, Sasuke. I wish to be alone with Ranma darling."

"As you wish," Sasuke said as he left.

With a look of determination, Ranma turned the knob and opened the door and shouted, "Okay, Kodachi! I know that-

Anything Ranma was about to say died when she beheld Kodachi. She was sitting on her bed, cross legged, wearing a black strapless bodice top that accentuated her breasts, matching black thong, black long gloves and over the knee boots with stiletto heels. Ranma stared at Kodachi and had trouble forming words. The predatory smile the Kuno heiress gave her didn't help matters, either.

Getting up from her bed, Kodachi walked over to Ranma, pulled her in and closed the door. She didn't give her time to react as she lifted her leg and placed her foot on the door besides Ranma's head.

"Ranma darling...how good of you to...come for me," Kodachi spoke huskily.

Shaking her head, Ranma shouted, "What the hell, Kodachi!? Put some clothes on!"

"Whatever for?" Kodachi asked with a grin. "You can warm me up nicely."

"I said put some clothes on!" Ranma repeated as she moved and looked away, flustered. "What is with you, you crazy-

Ranma stiffened when she felt Kodachi embrace her from behind. She started to tremble as she felt the Kuno heiress' breasts mash up on her back as well as feel her breath on her cheek. A chill ran up her spine as she heard her chuckle.

"Ooh, Ranma darling," Kodachi spoke softly. "The way you react to me...you're still a man despite your curse. Tell me truly...you don't react this way to that hag you call a fiancee, right?"

That was enough to anger Ranma as she slipped from Kodachi's hold. She turned around and glared at her, but Kodachi covered her mouth and laughed. Ranma let out a growl and clenched her fists as well as gritting her teeth.

"You know exactly why I'm here!" Ranma shouted angrily.

"Ranma, you can be so cruel," Kodachi pouted as she walked to the bed. Sitting down and crossing her legs, she continued. "I assume the Head of the Culinary Council paid you a visit and offered you a deal."

"Yeah, and it so happens that you gave my girl side a name," Ranma said, maintaining her anger. "What the hell is up with this Hanako Sakura business!?"

"I think it's a cute name," Kodachi said.

"My name is Ranma no matter what form I am!" Ranma yelled.

"That you are, darling," Kodachi agreed. "But seriously, your curiosity is piqued, is it not? Not only is my aunt offering you the chance to learn Toshiro's technique, she is also giving you access and credit to the Culinary Institute Market for a month. I'd say you came out the winner here, Ranma darling. Plus...I have an extra incentive if you are able to win the battle."

"I don't want anything from you!" Ranma yelled, emphasizing every word she said.

"Are you sure?" Kodachi asked with an eyebrow raised.

Kodachi got up from her bed again and grabbed a nearby glass of water from the nearby stand. She then went to her closet, opened it and grabbed a small pet carrier. Kodachi opened it and out came a puppy who nuzzled her leg. She then patted her bed and the puppy jumped and barked. With a smile, Kodachi poured the water on the puppy and not a second later, the puppy turned into a human boy. The boy kept on barking and jumping on the bed happily, unaware of his predicament. Kodachi turned her attention to Ranma and smirked at her reaction. Shock was evident on the pig tailed girl's face.

"Sprin...Spring of drowned boy…," Ranma stuttered as she pointed at the puppy turned boy.

"That's right, Ranma darling," Kodachi said in a sing-song voice. "I made a few calls and I got in touch with a tour guide that works in Jusenkyo. It took time, convincing and money, but I got a barrel of this water."

"Where's the rest of it?" Ranma asked quickly, sounding desperate..

"That's for me to know, Ranma darling," Kodachi responded. "But that water is your reward when you win the Culinary Combat in a few days. Now I know you will truly give your all with the cure practically in your grasp."

Ranma couldn't believe it. Water from the spring of drowned boy...here in Nerima and Kodachi has it. Ever since she and her father had left Jusenkyo, the thought of being cured, free from this curse had been on her mind. Though her life had been a string of hardships due to brutal martial arts training under her father, the curse was one hardship she had wanted to get rid off. By curing her curse, Ranma would no longer fear cold water changing her gender and there would longer be a reason to hide. Being a full man and having a semblance of a normal life would no longer be a dream. All she had to do was win a cooking competition and the Jusenkyo curse would be a thing of the past. It would all be so simple because in Ranma's mind, she never loses.

Still, Ranma had her suspicions and narrowed her eyes at Kodachi. The whole thing sounded too simple and considering what had happened the day before, something nagged at Ranma's mind, telling her that the Kuno heiress was hiding something besides the Jusenkyo water.

"There has to be a catch," Ranma said bluntly.

"No catch, Ranma darling," Kodachi responded. "Win this game, and the water will be yours. Simple as that."

Kodachi approached Ranma and put her arms around her neck and inched her face closer to hers, licking her lips.

"Or we could skip all that," Kodachi whispered. "I'll offer myself to you. Even in your state, I think you can find the means to satisfy me. We can learn so much from each other, my darling. Personally, I don't think that hag has the courage to go as far as I am willing to do."

Ranma pushed Kodachi and gave her the most piercing glare she could muster. What she got in response to that was a smirk and Ranma went to the window and opened it. She looked back at Kodachi, still holding that glare.

"You better hold your end of the deal, or so help me…," Ranma warned.

"You have my word, Ranma darling," Kodachi purred. "Just win against your mystery opponent. I know you can do it."

With that, Ranma leapt out the window and left...and then there was a sudden click when she stepped on a roof tile and seconds later there was an explosion that rocketed her to the sky, screaming. It would seem that security measures weren't just limited to the inside of the building.

When Ranma was out of sight, Kodachi twirled happily until she fell on her bed. She felt positively giddy at having Ranma in her room and her body just tingled in delight at her actions. After a moment, she sighed forlornly, feeling the emptiness in her heart.

'So cruel...so cold...such a man, Ranma is,' Kodachi thought as a blush adorned her cheeks. 'One day he will be mine. For now, however, I am a woman alone with my thoughts…'

Lifting her hand, Kodachi looked at her fingers and her blush deepened. She closed her window and let out a breath.

'Well...not just alone with my thoughts,' Kodachi thought, a tear escaping her eye. 'How unbecoming of a woman of my breeding. How I wish Ranma was here to punish me...'

Back at the Tendo home, Kasumi was bidding farewell to the Amane and the Culinary Champions. Under her arm was a thick recipe book titled The Best of the Culinary Champions Cookbook, signed by each of the Culinary Champions, of course. As the chefs bid their farewells and made their way out, followed by the trumpet players that were carrying the banner and parachutes, Amane had elected to stay behind. This got Kasumi curious as the head of the Culinary Council looked at her from head to toe. This made her feel awkward and was about to ask Amane about it until she looked at her with an arched eyebrow.

"I have to say you are nothing what I expected, Kasumi Tendo," Amane said.

"I don't quite follow," Kasumi responded, confused.

"Kodachi described you in very unfavorable terms," Amane explained. "I assumed that her rival for the affections for a man she wants was someone that equaled her in beauty but not her breeding. Instead, I find a woman who is, to put mildly, quite ordinary and plain. That's not a knock against you, Ms. Tendo, because you are far from the old, decrepit hag Kodachi sees you as."

Kasumi didn't know how to take that, but remained silent.

"Kodachi also tells me that you have a set of claws," Amane smirked as she chuckled.

Wincing, Kasumi recalled what happened between her and Kodachi and she still couldn't believe what came over her. She was, considering Amane's expression, relieved because it looked she wasn't going to reprimand her for her actions.

"Still, I hope that young man is worth all your trouble," Amane said as she turned around and walked out of the gate. "Kodachi has considerable means and skills to enact any sort of revenge against anyone who stands in the way of what she wants. She won't let her guard down against you again."

"This whole contest...it's just for Kodachi's revenge, isn't it?" Kasumi asked with an edge, frowning.

"She has her reasons for this, Kasumi Tendo," Amane responded. "Personally, her plans for revenge makes for an entertaining spectacle that I can't possibly deny my audience of. Give my regards to Hanako and I look forward to seeing her in the arena."

With Amane finally gone, Kasumi was left alone at the gate. Again, she thought back on her actions and the fear that there were going to be consequences was starting to hit her hard. The fact that Kodachi's plan was being enacted as a form of a contest worried her and she worried about what Ranma was getting himself into. What made her even more worried was not knowing what else Kodachi had in mind. She even chided herself for not stopping Ranma from signing that contract that he had to honor as Hanako Sakura, a name Kodachi came up with for Ranma's girl half. Kasumi also wondered how she figured into Kodachi's plan and what was the Kuno heiress' reward for Ranma.

Kasumi's thoughts were interrupted when she heard a crash nearby. She saw that there was hole on the roof...precisely where Ranma and his father's room was. Kasumi ran inside and up the stairs, followed by her family and Genma. She was the first one to enter the room and gasped at what she saw. On the floor was Ranma, still in girl form, dazed and her clothes burnt and tattered. While she was relieved that Ranma was still breathing from whatever it was that happened to her, Kasumi was still worried as she knelt beside her and cradled her head on her lap. She gave Ranma's cheek a few light slaps before the girl shook her head and sat up. Ranma tried to stand before she collapsed into Kasumi's arms.

"Ranma, don't exert yourself!" Kasumi exclaimed.

"What happened, boy!?" Genma shouted.

"Not so loud, old man," Ranma groaned. "Had to go...through some security before...getting to Kodachi."

"Did you manage to get anything out of her?" Soun asked, relieved that despite Ranma's state, she was relatively fine.

"Not everything, but enough," Ranma responded as she staggered to get up. "Kasumi, I want to talk to you about this. After I get shower, can we go somewhere in private?"

"Well...alright," Kasumi responded, though Ranma's request confused her.

"What's so important that can't be said in front of us?" asked a suspicious Akane.

"Because it's not just my fight," Ranma said rather grimly.

Some time later, Ranma and Kasumi were at the local amusement park located far away from the Tendo home. Once they had gotten there, they had made their way towards the ferris wheel and Kasumi paid the man tending to it for a few go arounds. Without another word, Ranma and Kasumi entered the pod and the ferris wheel began its motions. It wasn't until a few minutes later that Ranma began to tell Kasumi what had happened at the Kuno Mansion, including Kodachi's reward for winning the Culinary Combat.

When Ranma was done explaining, Kasumi was deep in thought as she processed what she just heard along with what had happened earlier. It seemed that the more she knew, the more suspicious she became of Kodachi's actions. When she looked at Ranma's expression, she knew he had the same suspicions she did. There was more to this than just simply winning a contest for a chance to be free of a curse. The fact that Kodachi was practically dangling the cursed water in front of Ranma was slowly making her angry, no matter how much she was trying to quell it.

"So...that's her reward," Kasumi spoke.

"It just can't be that simple, Kasumi," Ranma said with a frown. "The chance to fully reclaim my manhood...so close and all I have to do is win a cooking contest. There has to be more to it."

"I just can't believe how cruel she's being to you," Kasumi said, her anger on full display.

Ranma was about to ask what Kasumi meant by that until he noticed her expression became more intense.

"If that Kodachi really, truly cared about you, she would have offered you that cure with no strings attached!" Kasumi shouted, making Ranma back off. "Instead she's just making you jump through hoops in some twisted way to prove your worth! Ooh, I have never felt so…"

"Listen, the contest is no problem," Ranma tried to assure Kasumi. "I can beat whoever that lady puts in front of me. I just don't like the fact that there's more to this and I hate not knowing what that is. Worst of all...considering what happened yesterday, I think Kodachi has something planned for you, too."

"Don't remind me," Kasumi groaned. "It's just...maybe this whole thing is her way of hurting me."

Again, Ranma was confused, raising an eyebrow.

"Kodachi is offering something I can't give you," Kasumi went on to explain. "Whereas I can give you friendship, trust and a welcoming home life, she is offering you a life of leisure, a cure and...I dare say...something else."

"You can say that again," Ranma scoffed. "I've never seen a girl so thirsty in…"

Ranma stopped himself as he cringed. This didn't go unnoticed by Kasumi as she looked at him curiously. Ranma turned to see Kasumi and felt trapped and cursed himself for it.

"Um...that is to say, I..." Ranma stammered.

"Ranma...what else happened?" Kasumi asked intensely.

Breathing a heavy sigh, Ranma explained himself, "When I got to Kodachi's room, she was...dressed in next to nothing and she tried to...you know...get a bit more friendly with me. She even offered another way for me to get the cursed water. I knew what she meant and I said no."

After hearing that, Kasumi looked furiously at Ranma and then looked away. She gripped her knees and gritted her teeth. Kasumi breathed in and out in order to calm down, but it wasn't an easy task.

Seeing this reaction, Ranma immediately panicked and said, "Listen, nothing else happened! I swear on my-

"Ranma...two things," Kasumi cut Ranma off, silencing him. "Firstly, I'm angry at Kodachi for trying such a stunt on you. The fact that she tried to seduce you just for you to get that cure and...I swear, I've never met anyone so...so...mean!"

At first, Ranma was relieved that Kasumi didn't direct her anger at him. That all changed when Kasumi faced him with an expression that was quite fierce.

"Secondly...I'm hurt that you were thinking of keeping that little detail from me," Kasumi continued. "Ranma...you have trust in me when it comes to things like this. No secrets. Remember that we are friends and I can't help you when you try to close yourself off. I...I don't want to see you hurt. You've been through enough, so please..."

Seeing Kasumi's eyes glistening in both anger and sadness made Ranma feel like a heel. It was true that he wanted to keep what else happened between him and Kodachi a secret from her so she wouldn't be angry or get the wrong idea. None of it worked and it only hurt Kasumi anyway. It also didn't help that he had a shred of doubt that he couldn't trust her and it stung. Ranma gave Kasumi an apologetic look and breathed a heavy sigh.

"I'm sorry, Kasumi," Ranma apologized. "I...yeah, I don't trust a lot of people, but you...I won't do it again, ma'am. I promise."

Seeing Ranma's honest expression helped Kasumi ease up. She smiled and pulled Ranma into a hug, to which the martial artist returned. They stayed like that for a while, though Kasumi held Ranma tighter as she felt Ranma needed it the most.

"You really got me to open up, you know," Ranma started as he tried not to get emotional. "We were on our date and...it was floodgates, ma'am. It was just like now and I...it just seems like you're the only one I can trust. I can't trust my father nor your father. Can't trust your sisters, but you…"

"It's okay, young man," Kasumi soothed. "We're in this together. Remember that."

Ranma and Kasumi separated but not before the eldest Tendo girl gave him a kiss on the cheek. Ranma blushed as he felt his cheek. It didn't take long for him to smile and it made Kasumi giggle. Ranma then got a little pensive as he looked at Kasumi, but shook his head. This didn't go unnoticed by Kasumi as she looked at him curiously again.

"What is it?" Kasumi asked.

"Well, I...uh," Ranma stammered, blushing again. "Well, you kissed me twice and I-

"Go ahead," Kasumi said as she turned her head and pointed to her cheek.

Though he hesitated at first, Ranma leaned in and kissed Kasumi on the cheek. Though flustered at first, Kasumi beamed at the sensation of Ranma's lips on her cheek. What she didn't expect however, was Ranma giving her another kiss on the other cheek. This made her beet red as she felt her cheek with her hand, staring at Ranma.

With a sly smile, Ranma said, "We're even now, ma'am."

"Young man, I…," Kasumi began before turning away. "I don't know what I did to deserve such...such affection."

"Stubborn and humble," Ranma commented, his sly smile turning into a more loving one. "You do more than you realize, Ms. Tendo."

"If you say so," Kasumi sighed, her smile returning.

When Ranma, in girl form and taking the name Hanako Sakura, arrived at the Culinary Institute Market earlier in the morning, she was instructed by one of the employees to report to Toshi's Diner on the restaurant level of the market. Once there, she was handed a uniform by the head chef of the diner and suited up (though she had to be reminded that she was going into the wrong locker room and had to close her eyes while getting into her uniform). The head chef gave Ranma her bearings around the kitchen and her responsibilities to it, which was basically being in charge of vegetable washing, vegetable cutting and food supply. Though Ranma was looking forward to training directly under Chef Toshihiro, she could only assume that the Culinary Champion wanted her to be put through the paces

All in all, Ranma was looking forward to a simple day of learning how to navigate the kitchen.

Some hours later, however, what the martial artist got was a trial by fire by way of the lunch rush.

What followed throughout the rest of the day was Ranma trying to keep up with the diner kitchen staff as they were preparing food for the customers. Everything was proceeding at a breakneck speed as Ranma was ordered to cut the vegetables as soon as they were washed. Order after order came and Ranma was trying to keep up with the rest of the staff. When supplies were running out, the head chef ordered her to grab some from the market and then it was back to cutting again. There were some delays when Ranma would, in her haste, grab the wrong ingredients and was ordered back to the market. This resulted in some angry customers demanding discounts for their order being delayed. It was, to say the least, hectic as Ranma was trying to get used to the routine.

It only got worse when some of the employees went on break and that meant that Ranma had to briefly take responsibility for the other staff's duties. She found herself being in charge of shelling the shellfish, cooking the meat and attending to the fryers. It got to the point where, at the tail end of the lunch rush, Ranma was the only only one in the kitchen, save for the one in charge of cleaning the floors. What irritated Ranma the most was that the staff that was on break were eating comfortably close by. She was frustrated, overworked and hungry, questioning if taking on the culinary challenge was such a good idea.

When the lunch rush was finally over, Ranma had plopped to the ground, tired and groaning. To add insult to injury, the one cleaning the kitchen had taken his break and that meant that cleaning duties were foisted on her. She cursed under breath before cleaning up the floors.

Ranma was finally given her break when the rest of the staff returned to their regular duties. They all congratulated her on a job well done, though she really wasn't in the mood to take any praise. She elected to take her break at one of the diner's booths and just rested her head on the table, a part of her soul trying to escape from her mouth.

"Is this booth taken?" a voice asked.

Ranma's eyes brightened as she raised her head. It was Kasumi with two bento boxes, which to her was a very welcome sight. She smiled and motioned for her to sit across her.

"Have I ever told you how much I love you?" Ranma spoke softly.

"Maybe you have," Kasumi giggled as she took her seat. "Though I suspect it's because there is food involved."

"Guilty," Ranma joked as she took the bento box when Kasumi offered it to her. "I swear, your home cooked meals are the best and I always look forward to it when I get home."

"You sound like a happy husband," Kasumi teased.

"Uh, that is...I…," Ranma stammered.

"Oh, Ranma, I got you," Kasumi laughed.

Ranma grumbled as she and Kasumi started eating.

Not much later, Ranma and Kasumi had finished their lunch. Ranma was lightly patting her stomach, satisfied with how the meal was. As for Kasumi, she was happy that Ranma was in good spirits after the state she had found him in earlier. For the moment, they relaxed and were engaged in conversation, making time until it was time to part ways.

"Oh, my," gasped Kasumi. "You have been working pretty hard."

"Yeah, it's been a crash course in navigating the kitchen," Ranma groaned as she stretched her arms. "Worst of all is that I'm not getting paid for all the work I've been putting in. Seriously, the lunch rush was never ending! It's amazing how popular this place is!"

"Well, you don't look too much worse for wear," Kasumi said as she observed Ranma. "But I can't help but worry that you're taking on too much for someone who hasn't worked in a kitchen for very long, especially a professional kitchen."

"Aw, you worry too much," Ranma assured. "I'll get used to it in no time. Like I said, I learn fast, especially under pressure. In fact, in just a few days, I bet I'll manning the kitchen all by myself and serve you the greatest lunch you've ever had Kasumi. Just you wait!"

"I will always wonder about that bravado of yours," Kasumi said with a shake of her head.

"Hey, I can back up what I say, Miss Tendo," Ranma countered with a confident smile. "By the way, I noticed you had that cookbook that Amane lady left you in hand while you were in the kitchen this morning."

"Well, it is an interesting read," Kasumi admitted excitedly. "When we got back yesterday, I wanted to read those kitchen squad recipes and I really couldn't wait to try my hand with some of those recipes. It's a good thing we had some of those ingredients you got yesterday. The book even had time challenges for each recipe. I really couldn't put it down."

"I guess that book beats all those lovey dovey books you usually read," Ranma said knowingly.

Kasumi was a bit caught off guard with Ranma's comment and blushed. She looked around the diner to see if anyone heard and tilted her head down in embarrassment.

"You really shouldn't say a lady's secrets so carelessly," Kasumi nervously muttered.

"Aw c'mon," Ranma said, rolling her eyes up. "They can't be that bad. If you only let me read them-

"Absolutely not!" Kasumi shouted

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything," a voice spoke, catching Ranma and Kasumi's attention.

Ranma and Kasumi turned around and saw Tatewaki Kuno standing before them, dressed in his usual kendo uniform and looking stoic. Ranma stood up, ready for a fight while Kasumi looked at the Kuno heir with an even expression. They both had their fair share of dealings with the Kuno siblings and they were curious at what Tatewaki would want with them.

"When you didn't make your presence known at school, I had thought you had run off," Tatewaki began, addressing Ranma. "Though Sasuke informs me that you have become part of my sister's plans as of late. For once, I feel for you...Hanako Sakura."

"You Kunos are truly a piece of work," Ranma seethed. "You think because you have tons of money on hand means that you get to walk all over everybody. I swear, you and that crazy sister of yours have been nothing but a pain in the ass!"

"I advise you not to lump me with my sister," Kuno warned as he looked dangerously at Ranma. "Think what you want about her, but I am a man of honor and Kodachi's actions besmirch the Kuno name. Getting my aunt Amane involved in this game...disgraceful."

"I don't care what her plans are!" shouted Ranma. "I'm going to win this match and become whole again!"

"Tough words indeed," Tatewaki acknowledged. He turned to Kasumi and addressed, "As for you, Kasumi Tendo-

"Hey, leave her alone!" Ranma shouted again.

"Hanako...it's okay," Kasumi assured as she rose to meet Kuno's attention.

"As I was saying," Tatewaki continued. "Kasumi Tendo...you struck my sister and incurred her wrath because she made...advances toward your intended. I don't know if I consider that brave or foolish on your part."

Kasumi remained silent but Ranma continued to glare at Tatewaki.

"While I admire your courage, I do hope you are ready to deal with the consequences," Tatewaki went on, gravely. "At St. Hebereke, Kodachi has been known to deal out punishment to those she believes wronged her or crossed her in any way. Trust me when I say she has plans for you because you have something...or someone she wants and she won't stop until she has beaten and humiliated you for it."

"Is there nothing I can say or do to stop her?" asked Kasumi.

"Unfortunately, no," Tatewaki responded. "Once she has her plans in motion, it is impossible to stop her until said plans come to fruition. I dare not interfere since it isn't any of my business to begin with. I just want to give you fair warning so you can be prepared for what is to come. But for now…"

Tatewaki proceeded to sit at the bar and grab a menu. He gave it a read before pointing a finger at the item and turned his attention to Ranma.

"I would like to have a grilled steak lunch, medium rare," Tatewaki ordered pompously.

"I'm on break, Kuno," Ranma pointed out.

"Hanako Sakura!" the head chef shouted from the kitchen. "You're break's over! Get started on that order on the double!"

Ranma could only grumble as she marched toward the kitchen while Tatewaki laughed at her.

Kasumi, however, could only look on with worry.

For the next few days, Ranma continued to work at Toshi's diner. While work in the kitchen did get more hectic as she took on even more responsibilities, she struggled a bit less as she started to get the hang of the ins and outs of the kitchen. It didn't relieve any of her stress as she did find herself running out of ingredients during the lunch rush and had to run to the market for ingredients and cook them. Even when there was some staff in the kitchen, Ranma wasn't allowed to rest as much. She even found herself barking back at the head chef and getting reprimanded for it...by way of a giant fan hitting her over the head. There were even some complaints from the customers regarding presentation of the meals, often looking like an unappealing mess. While she learned some of the ins and outs of the kitchen, It was still difficult to work in conditions where time was of the essence while still trying to make something presentable. The food was comestible but it just wasn't presentable.

Eventually, Ranma's skills in the kitchen improved to the point where she allowed herself to show off a bit, using her skills as a martial artist to navigate through the kitchen. There were also times when she got a plate done, she would serve to the customers themselves, which scored her some tips. Ranma did start to irritate the chefs when she started to criticize them for being too slow and urging them to go faster through the lunch rush. Even at the times she got more responsibilities, Ranma started to handle them a bit more ease and even wondered why they were so hard to handle to begin with.

Things changed when Chef Toshihiro arrived days after Ranma started to work at the diner. He told her that his head chef reported her work as satisfactory and that she was ready for the next stage of her training. Ranma sighed in relief, but Chef Toshihiro stressed that her training will only get more difficult. Still, Ranma insisted that she wasn't afraid of any challenge. The Culinary champion instructed Ranma to report to the arena the next day to meet him and the other Culinary Champions.

With all that in mind, Ranma went home with a skip in her step.

Sitting on her bed with the The Best of the Culinary Champions Cookbook open and writing in her personal cookbook, Kasumi hummed as she flipped through the pages for any recipes that caught her interest. Ever since Amane Hikawa had left the recipe book in her hands a few days ago, she couldn't tear her eyes away from the contents of the book, which was basically a best of from the Culinary Champions. Like a high school student, she had even taken to scribbling a few small notes on the recipes that had caught her eye. To Kasumi, it felt like one of her study sessions she used to have with her friends. With a sigh, she continued to work while also looking at the clock, noting that it was almost dinner time and had to get ready.

There was a sudden knock on the door that took Kasumi out of her thoughts. She put the book and notes down and got up from the bed and straightened herself out, even making sure that her hair wasn't out of place.

"Who is it?" asked Kasumi.

"It's me, Kasumi," replied Ranma from the door.

Kasumi opened the door and found that Ranma was still in her girl form, dressed in the uniform she had been wearing for the past few days. While Ranma did look exhausted, Kasumi noted that she had a smile on her face, meaning something good happened. She stepped aside to let Ranma in and closed the door.

"So...how was work, Ranma?" asked Kasumi.

"As usual, I had to take the bulk of it," Ranma sighed as she stretched her arms out. "To tell you the truth, it gets easier once you know the way to do things. Plus, I got more tips."

Ranma put her hand in her pocket and pulled out a few yen bills. Kasumi noted that some of them had big denominations, which meant that Ranma was doing exemplary work at the diner.

Scratching the back of her head, Ranma sheepishly said, "Listen, I hate to keep asking you this, but can you keep this safe for me? I really don't want this anywhere where my pops can get it."

"Why, certainly Ranma," Kasumi responded as she took the offered bills.

After taking the money, Kasumi went to her closet, got on her knees and opened the safe. She took out a small box labeled "Ranma's Earnings" and placed the money inside. Ever since Ranma had been earning tips at the diner, she had asked her to keep the money safe, which she was glad to do as it showed how much trust she had in her. While the money wasn't what one would call an hourly wage, Kasumi was glad that Ranma was being rewarded for her hard work, considering how much work was being put on her shoulders.

"You know, you're handing me your hard earned wages…," Kasumi began to comment as she closed the safe and stood up to face Ranma. "It's like a good husband coming home from work with a paycheck for the wife. It's like we are already married."

"Um, well, I," Ranma stammered, looking to the side, blushing. "I just really trust you, that's all."

"Well, thank you all the same," Kasumi giggled. "Though I assume something else happened at work besides earning more tips."

"Oh, right," Ranma nodded, remembering. "Today was my last day at the diner and I will be training in the arena first thing tomorrow."

"You really must have impressed the other chefs these past few days," Kasumi said.

"Oh, I wouldn't doubt it," Ranma replied confidently. "Maybe I can get Chef Toshihiro to teach me that technique tomorrow. That way, I can really show the crowd what I can do."

"Well, you've had enough practice these past few days," Kasumi said as she went to her bed and sat down. "How about some theory?"

Kasumi could see from the pained expression on Ranma's face that she didn't want to study. While she did understand that Ranma has been working hard these past few days, Kasumi felt that her friend needed this and beckoned to her with an expression that brooked no argument. She smiled as Ranma complied, the pig tailed martial artist walking over and sitting beside her. Kasumi grabbed the recipe book and opened it, flipping through it until a picture of a younger Amane Hikawa and an older gentleman with slicked back greying hair, dressed in a loud colored cape and what would appear to be some royal European coat with frills underneath. Both Amane and the older man wore very confident expressions as both had their hands on their hips.

"The man beside Ms. Amane was her father, Masuhiro Hikawa," Kasumi began as she pointed her finger at the picture. "According to this book, he was a food critic who traveled around the world, tasting every dish from the finest restaurants. One day on his travels, he saw a match between two sauce makers and served as a judge. It inspired him to gather the best chefs in all of Japan and used his fortune to create the Culinary Coliseum, an arena where chefs from around the world tested their skills against Masuhiro's chosen champions. When he passed, Amane took over as head of the Culinary Institute and wanted to continue her father's legacy."

Kasumi flipped through the cookbook's pages until she came upon the page where Amane, dressed as the Statue of Liberty with her arm locked with Chef Ben Yamaguchi's arm. The chef had a rather smug smile on his face.

"Chef Ben Yamaguchi came from a family of chefs that were traditionalists in Japanese cooking," Kasumi continued. "He had wanted to study something different and went to America to gain knowledge and skills on how things were done there. When he came back to Japan, Chef Ben started his first restaurant, The Smoky Harbor, that serves American style food. He boldly stated that he would outshine the clown, the coronel and the king and bring true American cuisine to the Japanese masses."

"Sounds like a guy who talks big," Ranma commenented. She narrowed her eyes at the picture and said, "Though the way he was looking at me yesterday...yeesh."

"Well, it says here that he loves taking on female opponents," Kasumi added. "He believes that showing strength to a woman will make them wilder in battle."

"Now I'm officially creeped out," Ranma shivered.

Kasumi flipped through the pages again and stopped at a picture with Amane dressed in a very form fitting cheongsam that was above her knees. Beside her was Chef Ken Chang, who was trying his best to look away from Amane, blushing beet red.

"Chef Ken Chang's start as a chef was something he fell upon," Kasumi started. "His father owned the Golden Bridge Hotel and Ken was the second in line to take over the business. When the hotel chef was sick, Chef Ken stepped up to cook for the guests, armed with only basic cooking skills and his mother's cookbook. He impressed the guests so much that his father made him the head chef of the hotel, a position which he holds to this day. He mostly specializes in the Cantoneze style of cooking, though I saw some recipes in this book that suggests he branches off to other styles as well."

"From what I could tell in this picture, I think he's pretty shy," Ranma pointed out.

"The book also says that while he has the most wins out of all the Culinary Champions, all his losses were against female opponents," Kasumi said with a frown forming on her face. "I have to question if this is because of his shyness or if he doesn't like distraction."

"I could use that to my advantage," Ranma said, though this earned him a sour look from Kasumi. Ranma nervously laughed, "Not that I would want an easy win or anything. A martial artist earns victory and respect."

Kasumi sighed as she flipped through the pages again. She stopped at a picture of Chef Yutaka Rochelle riding a moped with Amane holding on to him from behind with one arm and holding a bag of baguette bread on her other arm.

"Chef Yutaka Rochelle, according to the book, is someone who always looks forward to a challenge," Kasumi started again. "Much like Chef Yamaguchi, Chef Yutaka comes from a family of chefs, though unlike him, he embraced his French culinary roots. He journeyed with his father to France and learned all there is to know about French cuisine, right down to what wine goes with each food. As he grew to adulthood, Chef Yutaka would go around challenging restaurants for culinary supremacy and also competed in worldwide events where gained many awards. He is currently the owner and head chef of Rochelle Supreme in Tokyo, though he has other smaller restaurants in the area. They all have signs that say 'Challengers Welcome'."

"Sounds like the guy really loves to flex his muscles, so to speak," Ranma said, interested. "Though I gotta admit, I like his confidence, taking on challenges as well as getting them. Now I'm curious if his food is all that."

Finally, Kasumi flipped through the part of the book that featured Chef Toshihiro. This picture was a bit normal compared to the others as it featured Amane and her father being served a meal by the Culinary Champion. In the picture, it seemed that when this picture was taken, Chef Toshihiro looked very serious, though there was a weariness to him.

"Chef Toshihiro was the last of the original Culinary Champions," Kasumi said as her tone became a bit more saddened. "His family was poor and worked extra hard to make ends meet. Toshihiro, throughout his childhood, was the one in charge of the kitchen and even a child was very much a person who didn't stray far from a recipe. As a young man, he won a scholarship from the Culinary Institute and perfected his craft there. When he graduated, his first job was at a hotel diner that couldn't afford a full staff and had to man the kitchen himself. It is here that he decided to develop the Kitchen Squad technique."

"Does the cookbook say how he developed it?" Ranma asked curiously.

"No, but it does say that it is the type of training that no normal human being could endure," Kasumi responded, which earned a disappointed groan from Ranma. "Which is why he never showed any of his chefs the technique, even if they begged him."

"Whatever training he had couldn't compare to what the old man put me through these past few years," Ranma growled with determination. "Still, I'll show those chefs tomorrow. By the end of the day, Chef Toshihiro will be begging me to learn that technique. I'll be running circles around whoever that Amane puts in front of me."

"I really hope you do well tomorrow," Kasumi sighed as she closed the book. "Though I am curious as to how the whole martial arts aspect of this contest will unfold."

"I know, and nothing you told me about these chefs screams martial artist," Ranma noted. "But those chefs seemed like they were up for a scrap, so I have to be ready."

While she mentally commended Ranma's confidence as well as taking this match seriously, Kasumi still had some concern as to what her fiance was getting into. In studying the Culinary Champions cookbook, she could tell that these chefs were masters of their craft and if their win/loss/draw record indicated, the odds were certainly against Ranma when it came to cooking. But it seemed like Ranma was undeterred by this, thinking that she could adapt to anything relating to martial arts, no matter how unusual the situation is.

A thought came into Kasumi's head as she looked at Ranma. As she was about to ask, Ranma was looking at her, too. There was a silent moment between them, though Ranma turned away, blushing and clearing his throat. Kasumi smiled at this and thought it was cute.

"Well, I...guess that's enough theory," Ranma stammered as she got up. "I'll be the bath if anyone needs me."

"Ranma," Kasumi said as she tugged at Ranma's shirt, stopping him. When she got up from her bed, she asked, "Do you think I can accompany you to the colosseum tomorrow? I'd love to see how you do in a competitive kitchen."

Ranma gave Kasumi a surprised smile, which turned heartwarming and seconds later, turned into a smug one before saying, "Guess I could show what I learned these past few days. Hell, I'll even cook something for you just to show you that I'm no slouch either. Trust me, your taste buds won't be ready."

"I'll hold you to that, young man," Kasumi said with a wink.

Final Notes

When I was first writing this arc, I thought I could get it done in two parts. Hopefully, the next chapter won't take as long to write. Tune in next time when Ranma learns from the Culinary Champions and hopefully, learns a new technique.

Until next time.
