Early morning light filters through the curtains as Alex quietly opens the door to Carina's bedroom. His small footsteps are light but eager, unaware of any boundary, as he bounds toward the bed where both Maya and Carina are soundly sleeping.

"Mamma!" Alex exclaims softly, pulling himself up onto the edge of the bed. "Maya!"

The sound of his little voice stirs them both, and Maya's eyes blink open first. She quickly registers the presence of Alex, his face full of innocence and excitement. Carina, still half-asleep, opens her eyes to find her son kneeling on the bed, his eyes bouncing between her and Maya.

"Hey, buddy," Maya says groggily, her voice warm but surprised. She gently sits up, trying to shake off sleep. Carina rubs her eyes and glances at the clock, realizing it's earlier than usual for Alex to be up.

"Mamma, can we go play?" Alex asks, completely oblivious to the situation.

Carina smiles softly, trying to stifle her laughter at the abruptness of the moment. She exchanges a quick glance with Maya, her heart fluttering slightly with both amusement and affection. "Good morning, my love," Carina says, pulling Alex closer for a quick hug. "It's a little early, isn't it?"

"Can Maya come too?" Alex asks, now climbing into the middle of the bed, nestled between them. Maya chuckles softly, unsure of what to say.

Carina meets Maya's gaze, her expression a mix of affection and a silent, 'What do we do now?'

Maya, ever the quick thinker, smiles down at Alex. "How about this—we make some breakfast first, and then we'll play all you want. Deal?"

Alex nods enthusiastically, already shifting his focus to what kind of breakfast he wants. As he chatters about pancakes, Maya leans back slightly, stealing a knowing glance at Carina. Both women share a tender smile, the awkwardness of the moment melting into warmth.

Carina gives Alex another squeeze before sitting up and turning to Maya. "Pancakes sound good?"

Maya grins. "Pancakes sound perfect."

As Carina flips the pancakes in the kitchen, Maya and Alex are in the living room, surrounded by his toy dinosaurs and action figures. Alex, mid-play, looks up at Maya with his curious blue eyes.

"Maya, did you sleep over?" he asks innocently, his little mind working through the idea.

Maya pauses, caught off guard, her mind racing for the right answer. Before she can respond, Carina's voice calls from the kitchen, saving her.

"Breakfast is ready!" Carina announces with a bright tone, giving Maya a wink as she glances toward the living room.

Alex immediately gets distracted by the smell of pancakes, his excitement for food quickly taking over. As he gets up to run to the kitchen, Carina adds, "Just like your friends sometimes have sleepovers, Maya slept over too."

This seems to satisfy Alex, who lights up at the idea. "Really?! I haven't had any friends sleep over since we moved to Seattle!" he says excitedly as he climbs into his chair.

Maya, relieved, smiles at Carina as they gather around the table. Carina serves the pancakes with a grin, clearly enjoying how easily Alex has accepted the explanation.

As they eat, Alex chatters about his toys and his friends at daycare, completely at ease with the new dynamic. Maya and Carina exchange warm smiles over the table, knowing they've navigated that moment as smoothly as possible, and in the sweetest way.

As they finish breakfast, Maya turns to Alex with a smile. "Hey, buddy, how about I bring you to pre-school today? Would you like that?"

Alex's face lights up with excitement. "Yes! Yes! I want you to take me!" he exclaims, nearly jumping out of his chair in his eagerness. "I'm gonna get dressed right now!" He rushes off toward his room, his little feet padding down the hallway as he hurries to find his clothes.

Maya watches him go with a grin and then turns back to Carina. "Well, that was easy," she says, a bit amused by how simple it was to make Alex's day.

Carina, leaning against the kitchen counter, gives Maya a soft, knowing look. "You're so good with him," she says warmly.

Taking advantage of the moment, Maya steps closer and wraps an arm around Carina's waist, pulling her in for a quick, stolen kiss. Their lips meet briefly, but it's enough to send a spark between them.

When they pull back, Carina chuckles softly, her forehead resting against Maya's. "You're gonna make me late for my patients if you keep that up."

Maya grins. "Worth it."

Just then, they hear Alex's voice from the hallway. "I'm ready!" he calls, clearly eager to head out.

Maya squeezes Carina's waist one last time before stepping back, winking at her.

Carina smiles, watching as Maya heads off to take Alex to pre-school, her heart feeling full as she watches the two people she loves most head out for their day together.

When Maya arrives at Alex's pre-school, she helps him out of the car and walks him to the entrance, holding his hand. Alex, still bubbling with excitement from their morning, practically bounces as they step into the school.

As they reach the classroom, Alex spots his teacher, Ms. Harper, and runs over to her. "Maya brought me today!" he announces proudly, glancing back at Maya with a grin.

Ms. Harper smiles warmly at the sight. "Good morning, Alex! Good morning, Maya."

Maya waves and then steps over, taking a moment to chat. "Hi, Ms. Harper. I was actually hoping to talk to you about something—Alex's been telling me about Career Day, and I was thinking it might be fun to arrange a field trip to the firehouse for the class. You know, let them see what it's like."

Ms. Harper's face brightens. "That sounds fantastic! The kids would love that. Alex has been talking non-stop about you being a firefighter, and I think it would be such an exciting experience for them. We haven't done a field trip in a while, so that would be a great opportunity."

Maya nods, happy to hear that the idea was well-received. "I can talk to my captain and get it all arranged. We could do a tour, show them the fire trucks, maybe even a little demonstration—something safe but exciting."

Ms. Harper clasps her hands together in excitement. "The kids would be thrilled! Let me know what dates work, and I'll get everything approved on our end. Thank you so much, Maya. It'll be a wonderful experience for them."

Maya smiles, glancing over at Alex, who is already chatting with his friends. "I think it'll be fun for all of them. Plus, I'm sure Alex will love showing off the firehouse to his classmates."

After a few more words with Ms. Harper, Maya says her goodbyes, feeling good about the upcoming plans for the field trip. As she heads out of the school, she can't help but think about how much closer she's becoming with Alex—and, by extension, with Carina.

As Station 19's truck pulls back into the firehouse after a long and exhausting house fire call, everyone starts to gather their gear. Warren, ever the cheerful presence, hops out of the truck and grins at his fellow firefighters as they begin to unload.

"Hey, everyone! Bailey and I are planning a little BBQ at the park this weekend, and we wanted to invite you all. Families, too," Warren says, raising his voice so the whole team can hear him. "We'll have good food, games for the kids, and plenty of space to just relax. Y'all could use it after the week we've had."

Maya, still pulling off her gloves, looks up with a smile. "That sounds great, Warren. It's been a while since we've all had time to hang out outside of work."

"Definitely, I'm in," Vic chimes in, flashing a grin. "Tell Bailey I'll bring dessert. I've been practicing my baking skills."

"Practicing? You mean eating the cookies instead of making them?" Jack teases, earning a playful shove from Vic.

Andy wipes the sweat off her forehead and nods. "Sounds perfect. Count me in. I could use a break, especially with how crazy this week's been."

Warren chuckles and looks over at Maya. "Maya, you should bring Alex and Carina. They're part of the family now too, right?"

Maya's eyes widened slightly, surprised but warmed by Warren's inclusion. "Yeah, I think they'd love that. I'll check with Carina, but I'm pretty sure we're free. Would you be ok if I invited my brother too? He has been working so hard to get his life back in order." The thought of spending more time with her Station 19 family alongside Carina and Alex fills her with a sense of belonging. The idea of her brother being present in her life with Carina and Alex was starting to allow her mind to wander into the future.

"Great! We would love to meet your brother and his family." Warren says, already mentally planning the BBQ. "It's going to be this Saturday at noon. We'll set up by the big playground so the kids can run wild while the adults enjoy some good food. Let me know if you need to bring anything."

Later that shift, as Maya sits in the rec room at the station winding down after the call, she picks up her phone and scrolls to Mason's contact. Their recent reconnection had been weighing on her mind, and this BBQ felt like the perfect opportunity to bring him further into her life. She taps his name and calls, leaning back on the couch.

"Hey, Mase," Maya greets him when he picks up.

"Maya! Hey, what's up?" Mason's voice comes through, a bit surprised but warm.

"Not much, just getting some downtime after a long day," Maya replies. "Listen, I wanted to invite you, your wife, and the girls to a BBQ this weekend. One of my coworkers, Warren, is throwing it. It's going to be at a park, with families, kids, all that fun stuff. I thought it'd be a great chance for us to hang out some more."

There's a brief pause on Mason's end. "A BBQ, huh? That actually sounds really nice. The girls have been bugging me to get out of the house, and a park sounds like just the thing. Are you sure we'd be okay to come?"

"Absolutely. Everyone brings their families, and I really want you to meet more of my crew. Plus, there are two special people I would like you to meet who will be there too," Maya adds, feeling excited about the possibility of her two worlds coming together.

Mason's tone lightens. "That sounds perfect. The girls would love it. I'll talk to Beth, but I'm sure she'll be up for it too. We haven't had a good family day in a while."

"Great! It's this Saturday at noon. I'll send you the details and where to meet," Maya says, feeling a sense of relief. This was a small but meaningful step toward rebuilding their relationship.

"Thanks for inviting us, Maya," Mason says sincerely. "It means a lot. I'm looking forward to it."

"Me too, Mason," Maya replies.

Later that evening, while Maya is still at the station, her phone buzzes with Carina's name lighting up the screen. She smiles and picks it up.

"Hey, you," Maya says, her voice softening as she leans against the kitchen counter at the station.

"Ciao, bella," Carina responds warmly. "How's your shift going?"

"Busy, as always. We just got back from a fire call, but things are settling down now," Maya replies. "How are you and Alex?"

"We're good. Alex is playing with his new dinosaur toy, but he's been asking about you. He misses his buddy," Carina chuckles. "We were just talking about the BBQ Bailey's organizing. She told us today and said Warren was inviting everyone from the fire station too. Sounds like a lot of fun."

"Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. I invited my brother, Mason, and his family. It'll be the first time they're all meeting everyone," Maya says, a bit of excitement in her voice.

"Oh, that's wonderful, Maya! It'll be nice to meet them," Carina responds genuinely. "I'm glad you're reconnecting with him."

"Me too. It's been good talking to him again. I think he's ready to be more involved now," Maya says, a sense of relief in her tone.

There's a pause before Carina adds, "Alex wants to talk to you. Hold on."

Maya hears a shuffling sound and then Alex's excited voice comes through. "Maya! Are you at work?"

"Hey, buddy! Yep, I'm at the fire station. How was your day?" Maya asks, smiling at his energy.

"I learned about bugs today! And tomorrow, we're going to learn about more animals!" Alex exclaims.

"That sounds awesome. I used to catch bugs when I was little," Maya tells him.

"No way!" Alex giggles. "Can we catch bugs next time we go to the park?"

"Of course we can. I'll help you find the best ones," Maya promises.

"Yay! Okay, Momma says I have to go to bed soon. Goodnight, Maya!" Alex says happily.

"Goodnight, Alex! Sweet dreams, buddy," Maya says, her heart warm from the conversation.

Carina gets back on the phone. "He's been talking about you all evening. He really loves spending time with you."

"I love spending time with him too," Maya says softly.

"Maya…" Carina's voice turns more tender. "I missed not having you at home when I got off work tonight. It felt... too quiet."

Maya's heart skips a beat. "I missed you too. I wish I could've been there."

There's a small pause before Carina speaks again. "Will you come for dinner tomorrow?."

"I will. I can't wait," Maya replies.

The park is alive with the sounds of laughter, sizzling grills, and the chatter of families enjoying the sunny weekend. A long row of picnic tables is set up under a canopy of trees, covered with colorful tablecloths, plates of food, and coolers filled with drinks. Nearby, kids run around, chasing each other across the grass, while parents and friends gather in small groups, talking and catching up.

The smell of burgers and hot dogs cooking on the grill drifts through the air as Warren expertly mans the barbecue, flipping patties and passing out grilled skewers. Bailey, standing nearby, calls out instructions and chats with Vic, who is setting up a few side dishes—salads, chips, and fresh fruit.

Station 19 crew members are spread throughout the park, mingling with their families and friends. Jack is tossing a football with some of the older kids, while Travis is joking with Andy about his questionable "grilling skills," all while trying to sneak another burger off Warren's grill.

Maya stands near the picnic tables, looking excited but a bit nervous as she watches her brother Mason and his family approach. She waves them over with a big smile, Carina and Alex by her side.

"Mason!" Maya greets her brother warmly, giving him a quick hug. "I'm so glad you guys made it. Mason, this is Carina, and this little guy is Alex."

Carina extends her hand with a welcoming smile. "It's so nice to finally meet you, Mason. Maya's told me a lot about you."

Mason shakes her hand, but his demeanor shifts as he glances between Maya and Carina, his smile faltering. "Uh, yeah, nice to meet you too," he says, sounding a little less enthusiastic than Maya expected.

Mason's wife, Beth, steps in, greeting Maya and Carina with a friendly smile. Their two young daughters immediately run off to play with Alex, but Mason remains standing slightly apart, looking uncomfortable. Maya notices the change in his attitude, her heart sinking a bit.

"So, Mason, this is Alex," Maya says, trying to bridge the awkwardness by gesturing toward the kids playing nearby. "He's Carina's son, and they've become a big part of my life."

Mason nods, his jaw tight. "I can see that."

Carina senses the tension and gently places her hand on Maya's arm, giving her a reassuring look. "I'll go check on the kids," she says quietly, giving Maya a moment alone with Mason. She heads toward Alex and the girls, leaving the siblings to talk.

Once Carina is out of earshot, Maya turns to Mason, her voice dropping. "Hey, what's going on? You're acting weird."

Mason shrugs, avoiding eye contact. "Nothing. Just wasn't expecting... all this," he says, gesturing vaguely toward Carina and Alex.

Maya takes a deep breath, realizing what's happening. "You didn't know Carina and I were together?"

Mason's expression hardens slightly, but he doesn't answer right away. After a moment, he mutters, "No, I didn't. You didn't mention it before."

Maya sighs, feeling a mix of frustration and hurt. "I didn't bring it up because we were still getting to know each other again, and honestly... I wasn't sure how you'd react."

"I'm not trying to judge you, Maya," Mason says, his tone a little defensive. "It's just... a lot. You know how Dad was. This is just unexpected."

Maya crosses her arms, feeling a wave of old wounds opening up. "Yeah, I know how Dad was. And that's exactly why I didn't tell you right away. I didn't want to risk losing you again."

Mason looks down, fidgeting with his hands. "I'm not Dad, Maya. But it's... different. Seeing you with a kid and a woman—it's a lot to take in."

Maya's expression softens, her voice quieter. "I know it's a lot, but this is my life. Carina and Alex make me happy. And I'm hoping you'll be part of that too."

There's a long pause before Mason finally nods, his shoulders relaxing a little. "I'm trying, okay? It's just going to take me a minute to wrap my head around it."

Maya steps closer, placing a hand on his shoulder. "That's all I'm asking for. I don't expect you to get it right away. But I need you to try."

Mason looks up at her, his expression softening. "I will. I promise."

Just then, Carina returns with the kids in tow, laughing and holding Alex's hand. "Looks like the kids are having a blast."

Mason forces a smile, looking at his daughters running alongside Alex. "Yeah, they are."

Maya feels a glimmer of hope. Though the tension still lingers, she knows this is just the beginning of working through things with Mason.

Mason stiffens when he catches sight of Maya and Carina sharing a quick, affectionate kiss near the picnic table. His face darkens, and without a word, he grabs Beth by the arm and starts gathering their daughters. His movements are sharp, his expression unreadable, but there's no mistaking the sudden tension in his body.

Maya, who had been laughing with Carina, notices out of the corner of her eye that Mason is packing up abruptly. Her heart drops into her stomach. She exchanges a glance with Carina, who gives her a small nod of understanding. With a heavy sigh, Maya excuses herself and jogs after her brother.

"Mason! Wait up!" she calls, catching up to him just as he's buckling his youngest daughter into her car seat.

He barely looks at her. "I think it's best if we go. This isn't really our scene."

"What? What are you talking about? We were all having a great time," Maya says, confused but already sensing where this is headed.

Mason finally turns to face her, his eyes blazing with anger. "I can't believe you didn't tell me."

Maya's breath catches in her throat. "Tell you what?"

"About her," Mason snaps, his voice low but cutting as he jerks his head in the direction of Carina, who is standing back by the picnic table, watching them with concern. "About you being with a woman."

Maya feels the tension building in her chest. "Mason, I didn't think I needed to give you a rundown of my personal life. You're my brother—this is my life, and I'm happy. Why does it matter?"

"It matters because you didn't tell me!" Mason growls, his voice rising. "You kept this from me! You know how Dad felt about... this kind of thing."

Maya's jaw tightens, the mention of their father hitting a nerve. "This isn't about Dad. This is about you. Are you seriously going to stand here and tell me you're just as closed-minded as he was?"

Mason flinches at the comparison, his face hardening. "I'm not Dad. But you dropped this on me out of nowhere. I've been trying to reconnect with you, and now this? How am I supposed to process this?"

"Process what?" Maya fires back, her frustration boiling over. "That I'm with someone I care about? That I'm finally happy? I'm still your sister, Mason, that hasn't changed."

Mason shakes his head, stepping away from her, his hands clenched at his sides. "I just need space, Maya. I can't... I don't know how to deal with this right now."

Maya feels a lump form in her throat as she watches her brother retreat, taking his family with him. "Mason, don't do this," she pleads, her voice softer now, almost breaking. "I just got you back."

Mason stops, his back still turned to her. He doesn't look back when he says, "Don't contact me for a while, okay? I need time."

Maya stands there, frozen, as Mason finishes loading his family into the car and drives away without another word. The sound of the car door closing feels like a door slamming shut between them. She's left standing in the parking lot, her heart heavy with the familiar sting of rejection.

Carina approaches quietly from behind, placing a gentle hand on Maya's shoulder. "Are you okay?" she asks softly.

Maya lets out a shaky breath, blinking away the tears that threaten to fall. "No. But I will be," she whispers, staring after Mason's car as it disappears down the road.

Carina wraps an arm around Maya's waist, pulling her into a comforting embrace. She gently rubs her back, her voice soft. "I'm so sorry, amore," she whispers, her eyes searching Maya's face. Maya forces a small smile, trying to put on a brave front.

"I'll be okay," Maya says, her voice a little too steady to be convincing. She swallows hard, but Carina can see the pain lurking just beneath the surface. "Mason just needs time. He'll come around."

Carina kisses Maya's temple, not pressing any further, but her eyes are filled with concern. Before either of them can say anything more, Alex comes running up, completely unaware of the tension that just unfolded. His face is bright with excitement as he tugs on Maya's hand.

"Maya! Maya! Can you sleep over again tonight? Please?" Alex asks, his eyes wide with hope.

Maya's expression softens instantly as she looks down at him. She crouches to his level, running a hand through his hair with a fond smile. "I don't know, buddy. We'll have to see what your mom says, huh?"

Before Alex can respond, Jack walks by with a smirk, clearly having overheard. "Sleepovers, huh? You two moving fast," Jack teases, waggling his eyebrows at Maya and Carina.

Maya rolls her eyes but can't help the small grin that tugs at her lips. "Shut up, Jack," she says, playfully shoving his shoulder.

Carina chuckles, shaking her head. "He's just jealous," she says, giving Jack a mock-serious look.

Jack laughs, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright, I'll leave you two lovebirds alone." He walks off, still grinning to himself.

As Jack disappears into the crowd, Maya stands up and looks back at Carina, who squeezes her hand gently. Maya gives her a grateful smile, feeling some of the tension ease, even if the hurt over Mason still lingers in the background.

"Let's get through the rest of today," Maya says quietly, her eyes locking with Carina's, "one step at a time." Carina nods, leaning in for a quick kiss on Maya's cheek, before they turn their attention back to Alex, who's run off to play with the other kids already.
