Bella smiled as she watched Edward expertly chop the tomatoes, as they prepared the soup, his hands moving with a practised precision. "You're pretty good with a knife," she teased lightly, sliding the chopped onions and garlic toward her.
Edward grinned, glancing up. "I've had a little practice," he replied. "Cooking on a ship or on base isn't quite like this, though. This feels… nice"
Bella chuckled as she prepped the roasting tray, spreading out the chopped tomatoes, onions, garlic, and a handful of fresh basil. "I like the idea of you cooking on a ship," she smiled, "But I bet it's nowhere near as cosy as my little kitchen." She drizzled olive oil over the vegetables, adding a sprinkle of salt and pepper before sliding the tray into the oven.
"Not at all," Edward agreed with a chuckle. "The kitchen's more like an obstacle course—dodging elbows, ducking under cabinets. This is a nice change."
As the ingredients began to roast, filling the kitchen with a rich, savoury aroma, Bella set up the blender. Edward leaned over the counter, watching her with interest. "You've got a great rhythm here," he commented, admiring how easily she moved around the kitchen.
Bella blushed slightly, enjoying the warmth in his eyes. "I just love cooking," she said softly. "It's one of my little joys."
When the vegetables were nicely roasted, she carefully transferred them to the blender, adding chicken broth and more fresh basil. "Moment of truth," she said with a grin, pressing the button. The blender whirred to life, pureeing the ingredients into a smooth, fragrant soup.
Edward leaned in, inhaling the scent. "That smells amazing, Bella," he murmured.
She smiled, pleased. "It's my step-mom's recipe. Simple, but comforting." She poured the blended mixture into a saucepan and set it on the stove to simmer. "Now for the grilled cheese."
Edward moved beside her, grabbing the bread and buttering each slice while Bella fetched the cheese from the fridge. "We're going for classic here," she said, layering slices of cheddar on the bread. "Golden, buttery, cheesy goodness."
Edward's stomach growled again, making them both laugh. "I can't wait," he admitted. "This is going to hit the spot."
She heated up a skillet, laying the sandwiches down with a satisfying sizzle. As the bread toasted to a perfect golden brown, the kitchen filled with the comforting smell of melted cheese and roasting tomatoes. Bella glanced over at Edward, catching his eye, and they both smiled, feeling the quiet joy of just being together in this little moment.
"Flip?" Bella asked.
Edward nodded and expertly flipped each sandwich, the cheese already beginning to ooze from the sides. "I think we've got this down," he said with a grin.
They worked in perfect harmony, the quiet sounds of the kitchen punctuated by soft laughter and easy conversation. When the sandwiches were ready, Bella ladled the soup into two bowls, placing them on the small kitchen table. Edward set the grilled cheese sandwiches beside the bowls, giving her a wink. "Looks like we make a good team."
Bella smiled, feeling a happy flutter in her chest. "I think so too," she replied softly. She took a seat, and they clinked their bowls together playfully, sharing a moment of gratitude for this simple, yet perfect, meal.
As they dipped their sandwiches into the warm, velvety tomato soup, Bella sighed with satisfaction. "This is exactly what I needed," she murmured, closing her eyes to savour the flavour.
Edward watched her, his heart full. "Me too, Bella," he said quietly. "Me too."
Bella beams at him. "I'm glad" and reaches out to squeeze his hand.
As they continue to eat, an idea pops into Bella's head. "Perhaps after lunch we could do a video call with your parents if they would be free?" She blushes. "Think it might be nice to meet them for the first time and you'll get a chance to speak to them before we go out tonight. I want you to be able to chat to your family over the holidays while you're here. My dad and step mom are probably setting onto their cruise right now" she chuckles.
Edward smiled warmly, squeezing Bella's hand back. "I think they'd love that," he agreed. "My mom's been dying to meet you since I told her about you. She'll be thrilled. I'm sure they'll be free if we just give them a call, my dad usually manages to get the time off work"
Bella blushed a little deeper, a mix of nerves and excitement flickering in her eyes. "I just hope I make a good impression," she murmured.
Edward leaned closer, his voice soft and reassuring. "You will, Bella. They already know how happy you make me. That's more than enough."
Her heart fluttered at his words, and she nodded with a smile. "Alright then, let's do it after lunch," she agreed.
They continued their meal, enjoying the warmth and comfort of the homemade soup and grilled cheese. When they finished, Edward took their empty bowls to the sink, while Bella grabbed her laptop from the living room.
She settled on the sofa, and Edward joined her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. Bella opened her laptop and set up the video call, and then Edward typed in his parents' number. After a moment, the screen flickered to life, and Edward's mom appeared, her face lighting up with delight.
"Edward!" she exclaimed, and then her eyes moved to Bella sitting next to Edward. "Oh, and this must be Bella!"
Bella smiled nervously and waved. "Hi, Mrs. Cullen! It's so nice to finally meet you."
"Please, call me Esme," his mom insisted warmly, her eyes shining. "I've heard so much about you. It's wonderful to see you both together."
Edward's dad appeared beside her, a grin on his face. "Hello, Bella! I'm Carlisle. We're so glad you're keeping our son out of trouble," he joked, and Bella laughed softly.
"It's a full-time job, but I'm managing," she replied playfully.
Edward chuckled, giving her a little nudge. "Hey, I'm not that bad."
They all laughed, and the conversation flowed easily. Bella's nerves melted away as she chatted with Edward's parents, sharing stories and laughing together. Edward watched them with a content smile, his heart full.
After a while, Esme spoke up again. "Bella, thank you for inviting Edward to spend Christmas with you. It means so much to us knowing he's with someone who cares about him so much."
Bella smiled warmly, feeling a sense of belonging. "It's my pleasure, Esme. I'm so happy he's here with me. And I promise to take good care of him."
Edward squeezed her hand, his expression tender. "I know you will," he murmured, his voice filled with affection.
They continued chatting for a little longer until it was time to end the call. "Merry Christmas, both of you," Esme said with a bright smile. "We hope to meet you in person soon, Bella."
"I'd love that," Bella replied sincerely. "Merry Christmas!"
After they disconnected, Edward turned to Bella, his smile soft. "You were perfect," he whispered.
Bella leaned in, giving him a gentle kiss on the cheek. "Thank you," she said, her heart brimming with happiness. "I'm glad we did that."
"Me too," Edward agreed, his eyes filled with warmth. "Thank you for thinking of it, love. It made today even better."
Bella leaned into Edward, feeling a deep sense of contentment. The video call had gone wonderfully, and she was glad to have had the chance to connect with his family. She looked up at him, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "So, what do you want to do before we head out to the Christmas Eve service?" she asked.
Edward considered for a moment, then smiled. "How about we take another walk around the neighbourhood? It's such a beautiful day, and the Christmas lights is really something I want to see now it's dark, and it'll give us a chance to chat and enjoy the festive atmosphere before we get ready for tonight."
Bella's eyes lit up. "That sounds perfect," she agreed, already feeling the excitement of the evening. "Let's bundle up again and take a stroll."
They got dressed warmly, Bella slipping into a cosy sweater and scarf while Edward donned his new green knit hat and gloves. They then wrapped themselves in their winter coats. Before they left, Bella made two thermo mugs of hot chocolate for them both and with the steaming mugs in hand, they stepped out into the crisp, cold air.
The neighbourhood even though nightime was aglow with Christmas lights, each house decorated more festively than the last. They walked slowly, taking in the twinkling displays and the cheerful decorations that adorned the lawns and rooftops.
"This is incredible," Edward said, his eyes wide with wonder. "I don't think I've ever seen so many lights in one place."
Bella smiled, taking a sip of her hot cocoa. "It's one of my favourite things about Christmas. There's something magical about seeing everything lit up."
As they strolled along, they chatted about their plans, the things they hoped to do together, and their favourite Christmas memories. Bella shared stories from her childhood, while Edward recounted tales from his family's holiday traditions.
They stopped by a small garden park where a Christmas tree stood, beautifully decorated with shimmering ornaments and glowing lights. Bella suggested they take a few more pictures, and they posed together, laughing and enjoying the moment. Edward wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close as they took selfies and pictures of them posing playfully in front of the tree.
As the time got nearer to the service, Edward and Bella headed back to her apartment. They were both glowing from the day's experiences, their hearts full of holiday cheer.
Back at the apartment, Bella and Edward took a few minutes to freshen up before heading out to the Christmas Eve service. Bella had prepared a simple but elegant outfit, and Edward looked dashing in a dress shirt and sweater.
"You look amazing," Edward said, his eyes lingering on Bella with admiration.
She blushed, smiling up at him. "Thank you. So do you."
They soon made their way to the church, Bella carrying a box of the cookies they had made earlier. The streets around them bustling with people heading to various holiday events. The church was beautifully decorated, with candles lining the aisles and a large nativity scene at the front. The warm, inviting glow of the lights created a serene and festive atmosphere.
Bella placed the box of cookies on a table filled with other treats the neighbourhood had made and they found their seats and settled in, the soft strains of Christmas carols filling the air. As the service began, Bella and Edward joined in the singing, their voices blending with the rest of the congregation in joyful harmony. The church was filled with the spirit of Christmas, and Bella felt a deep sense of peace and happiness, sharing this special evening with Edward.
As midnight approached, the church bells began to ring, and everyone sang "Silent Night," their voices rising in a beautiful, harmonious chorus. Bella looked over at Edward, who was watching her with a loving smile. She felt incredibly grateful for this moment, for the joy of the season, and for the special bond they shared.
When the service ended and they stepped out into the crisp night air, the snow began to fall gently again around them. Edward took Bella's hand, pulling her close as they walked back to her apartment.
"Tonight was perfect," Bella said softly, her breath forming little clouds in the cold air. "Thank you for being here with me."
Edward squeezed her hand, his voice full of warmth. "Thank you for making it so special. I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas Eve."
They returned to the apartment, where Bella had set up a cosy spot by the fireplace with blankets and pillows. They snuggled together on the couch, sipping more hot cocoa and chatting about their favourite carols at the service. The flickering firelight added a warm, comforting glow to the room, and Bella felt a deep sense of happiness as she leaned against Edward.
As the clock ticked toward the early hours of Christmas Day, Bella and Edward drifted into a comfortable silence, enjoying the peace and contentment of being together. Bella sighed contentedly, her heart full of love and joy.
"Happy Christmas, Edward," she whispered softly.
Edward kissed the top of her head and held her close. "Happy Christmas, Bella," he replied.
