With Courage I Will Face

Arc III: The Nugget Bridge

Chapter Sixteen: Nugget Bridge Finals

"I saw some of your earlier battles, you're pretty good." Summer complimented from across the field. "But not good enough to beat me."

"We'll see about that. Butterfree, I choose you!" Ash retorted, selecting his Pokemon.

"Exeggcute, go!" Summer chose hers too. Exeggcute appeared, all six eggs huddling together. "Start off strong, Hypnosis!"

Exeggcute changed position, with five of the eggs moving behind another so it could send out waves of light blue energy towards Butterfree.

"Dodge it and use Confusion!" Ash countered.

Butterfree moved out of the way of the attack easily and tried to focus on Exeggcute to psychically control it, but Summer had ordered them to spread out and divert his focus.

"Bullet Seed, all of you!" Summer ordered. Each Exeggcute spat out an array of glowing green seeds at Butterfree from afar. They weren't very effective, but being pelted from all angles was bothersome. "Now Leech Seed!"

One of the Exeggcute, a cracked one, glowed green and shot a light brown seed out of its cracked opening. It went straight into the air with enough force to reach Butterfree, and Ash had to act quickly.

"Protect yourself with Gust!" Ash cried.

Butterfree used his wings right away, creating a barrier of wind between himself and all the incoming grass-type attacks. The Bullet Seed's were knocked off course and the Leech Seed was flung away. Ash grinned while Summer seemed surprised.

"An awfully big risk. Aren't you worried about Butterfree sustaining damage from its own Gust?" She asked in shock.

"Of course! But we've tried this out a few times before, and I trust Butterfree to stop if it gets to be too much." Ash replied. "And he trusts me not to let him sit there and take damage. Butterfree, Poison Powder!"

Purple spores began to pour from Butterfree's wings, mixing in with the Gust to be blown all around the arena. Plenty landed on Exeggcute, sinking in an effecting it with poison.

"Exeggcute!" Summer cried worriedly as the Egg Pokemon recoiled from the poison damage.

"Use Gust again!" Ash ordered.

Butterfree used another Gust, the winds easily picking up the scattered eggs and bringing them back together as it spun them around.

"Now go, use Psybeam!" Butterfree's eyes glowed pink and he shot out a jagged beam of pink energy that caught Exeggcute as it was fighting against the strong winds and slammed it back into the ground.

"Sludge Bomb!"

Each of Exeggcute's heads jumped back into the air and fired a blast of brown sludge back up at Butterfree and all but two made contact.

"Finish it with Façade!" Summer commanded.

Ash gasped as Exeggcute was surrounded by an orange aura. One of the heads jumped onto another to be launched furiously at Butterfree as he was falling to the ground. Another of the heads followed, being launched by the same head towards Butterfree.

"String Shot, use the first one as a shield!"

Acting quickly, Butterfree landed the silk rope on the head of Exeggcute that landed just below and tugged harshly, yanking it into the air and whipping it around to collide with the incoming second hit. It was Summer's turn to gasp as Ash pumped both his fists in excitement.

"Nail 'em with Psybeam!" Ash followed up.

Butterfree wasted no time attacking again once all Exeggcute's heads were together again. There was a brief explosion and Exeggcute was thrown back, eggs spilling into different directions. The ref declared Ash the winner, and the Pallet trainer ran excitedly onto the field with Pikachu sprinting behind him.

"We did it, Butterfree! That was great, you were so cool!" Ash praised Butterfree as he floated around excitedly, chirping with delight.

"Pika! Pikachu!" Pikachu waved both arms excitedly at Butterfree, who floated down to chirp happily at Pikachu as well.

"That was some battle out there, Ash." Summer said approaching him. "I saw you in the first round too, you've got a weird way of battling sometimes, don't you?" She seemed to be teasing him.

"I've been hearing that a lot lately." Ash laughed along, scratching his cheek. Pikachu stopped giggling with Butterfree at that moment, turning his attention to Ash.

"It seems very effective for you." She complimented him, pulling out a red button for him. "But be careful, and mind how risky some of your tactics are. I'd hate to see a clever strategy fall apart because of a needless and uncalculated risk. That said, you deserve this button more than anyone I've battled so far." She passed it over to him, Exeggcute facing up. "Good luck in the finals, Ash."

Ash just watched her go as he closed his fist around his Exeggcute button.

"Well, I'll be, Ash isn't half bad." Gary said after their battle. Leaf playfully swatted his arm. "No, I mean it, I'm impressed!"

"He's been learning really fast." Misty told them. "Not that he was hopeless a few weeks ago, but he's been growing really, really fast."

"That much is obvious." Leaf agreed. "I guess that's what happens when you go up against Team Rocket so soon."

"Yeah, that's true." Gary nodded absent mindedly, before he choked on air. "Excuse me?" Was his next reaction.

Misty and Brock just shrugged.

"Ah, another Pallet Town trainer." Bill said as he eyed Ritchie from across the field.

"I won't be beaten as easily." Ritchie promised, gripping his Pokeball. Bill let out a chuckle.

"Oh, trust me lad. It was not easy. That was an entirely luck-based win." He said, reaching for his own Pokeball.

"Yeah, well you won't get that lucky again either. Zippo, come on back out!" Ritchie released his starter again.

Zippo the Charmander stood tall and proud, arms crossed as he mirrored Ritchie. Bill smiled and switched his decision to another Pokeball on his belt, moving to the other side.

"I won't need to. Abra, let's go!" Bill's Pokemon was chosen. Abra was a small yellow Pokemon, roughly the height of Ritchie's Charmander, with pointy ears and a kite-shaped face.

"Zippo, use Fire Fang!" Ritchie decided to start the battle straight away,

Zippo charged in, flames coming from its jaw as it neared Abra. Just before Zippo clamped its flaming jaws on Abra's form, it seemed to blink from existence to the surprise of both Ritchie and his Charmander.

"Mega Punch!" Bill called, surprising them both further.

Abra reappeared in a quite blink of pink energy. It's fist was surrounded by a white circle of glowing energy as it slammed directly into Zippo's back, knocking it straight into the ground in a painful looking movement. Abra floated under its psychic powers back closer to Bill as Ritchie gasped at Abra's speed.

Zippo pushed back to its feet until it stood even with Abra again, refusing to stand lower than the Psi Pokemon.

"I'm impressed Zippo stood back up after that. Taking a Mega Punch is no small feat." Bill complimented.

"It'll take more than that to put Zippo down. Use Scratch!" Ritchie let out a smile as he retaliated.

Zippo rushed back in, the tips of its tiny claws glowing as it charged back towards Abra, who disappeared without a single word from Bill again.

"Mega Punch!" Bill's command came a second time, but Ritchie quickly countered.

"Turn around and use Fire Fang!" He cried.

In the time it took Abra to blink back into existence, Zippo turned around to clamp its flaming jaws around Abra's glowing fist. There was a quick explosion that followed, Zippo was thrown a few feet back but stood strong while Abra simply popped back into existence moments later, still floating towards Bill's side of the field.

Ritchie glared a bit as Bill chuckled.

"Use Growl!" Ritchie instructed.

"Taunt!" Bill swiftly answered.

Just as Zippo was beginning to growl, Abra gave a cheeky grin and teleported into the starters personal space. Zippo swung its tail at Abra, who disappeared and reappeared again tauntingly close to Zippo.

"Fine, Fire Fang!" Ritchie knew using a status move would be useless for now, with Abra taunting Zippo like that.

Zippo lunged again, jaws first, and managed to catch Abra just before it could Teleport away. Abra grunted in pain as Charmander bit down harder, inflicting more damage.

"Ember!"

The balls of fire exploded on contact before they could even make it out of Zippo's mouth, as it was still clamped on Abra's arm. The psychic-type recoiled in pain with the few impacts and Bill shouted out more commands.

"Thunder Wave!" He ordered. Abra stuck its opposite arm out, palm facing Charmander, and released rings of yellow electricity that quickly enveloped Zippo.

The move had the desired effect, and Zippo's muscles locked up quickly. Abra easily used Teleport to escape its predicament, leaving Zippo standing alone and unable to move freely.

"Ember, again!" Ritchie called once more.

Zippo's head reared back but the release of the fireballs was slowed by the lizards impaired reaction time, giving Abra the time to Teleport in close while Bill gave his next command.

"Mega Punch!"

Abra's Mega Punch landed just as Zippo tried to change the direction of its attack, punching straight through the fire created to strike. Zippo recoiled, its attack interrupted, and Bill let Abra follow up on its own with another Mega Punch to the gut. Zippo hunched over, collapsing under the attack.

After just a few moments, the round was declared in Bill's favor with Charmander being unable to battle.

"That was an admirable battle. You know, Abra was my very first Pokemon. You performed very well." Bill complimented Ritchie as he recalled Abra.

"Thanks. That's the first battle Zippo's lost, y'know?" Ritchie answered. Bill let out a chuckle, looking pleasantly surprised.

"Yes, I believe it." He said back. They nodded their respects and parted ways.

The finals was about to begin.

"Ladies and gentlemen! The final round of this years Nugget Bridge Tournament is about to begin! Here today is Ash from A-bracket and Bill from B-bracket! Bill, our lovely sponsor, has never lost a Town Tournament here! Will this be a first?" Nurse Joy narrated as Ash and Bill took their places.

"Another, another Pallet native." Bill commented as he stepped gazed out at Ash. "You're all proving to be a difficult bunch."

"What can I say? We like to cause trouble." Ash replied lightly.

"Nidorino, let's go!" Bill jumped straight into action and chose his Pokemon.

Ash recognized it as the evolved form of Male Nidoran. Still quadrupedal and entirely purple, but bigger than its base form with a more imposing horn.

"Pikachu, I choose you!" Ash chose easily. Pikachu leapt down off his shoulder, sparking his cheeks out at Nidorino while it angrily stomped its foot back as if preparing to charge.

"Eager, aren't we? Very well. Nidorino, Horn Attack!"

Nidorino charged at Pikachu as its horn glowed.

"Dodge it!" Pikachu pushed off to the side, dodging the impact only for Bill to change orders swiftly.

"Double Kick!"

Nidorino turned on its front legs, using its back legs to kick out harshly at Pikachu and send him stumbling backwards.

"Quick Attack!" Ash called.

Pikachu launched forward, slamming into Nidorino's back. The impact made the poison-type skid but wasn't enough to knock it over.

"Tail Whip!" Pikachu landed swiftly, turning around and tauntingly wagging his tail at Nidorino.

"Fury Attack!" Bill ordered.

Nidorino turned around and charged at Pikachu again with its horn glowing. Pikachu stood his ground waiting for Ash's command.

"Block it with Brick Break!" Ash countered.

Pikachu quickly spun around as well to meet the glowing horn with his own glowing tail. They collided and were forced apart. Nidorino tried to strike again but was parried again and again. They collided a final time and Pikachu forced Nidorino's head downward, nearly slamming it into the ground as he bounced backward.

"Tail Whip, again!"

"Horn Attack, right through it!"

Nidorino didn't flinch as it charged through the attempt to lower its defenses. Ash could tell it went through even though Nidorino tried to power through, and Pikachu jumped backwards to avoid the attack.

"Double Kick!"

"Quick Attack!"

Their commands came swiftly, neither trainer was willing to give an inch. Nidorino spun around again, rising on its front legs to kick outwardly with its back ones while Pikachu lunged forward. Pikachu dodged through the Double Kick with precision, sliding under the first kick and over the second to slam into Nidorino's backside. This time the impact sent it further back, though it remained on its feet.

"Very good. Exciting. Though you're pushing your luck there with physical attacks." Bill quipped to Ash as Nidorino pulled itself together.

"I could say the same thing to you." Ash replied cryptically as Pikachu took a deep breath. "Are you okay, Pikachu?"

"Pika!" Pikachu called back, crouching back into a fighting stance. Ash grinned as Bill looked on, seeming to contemplate his next move.

"Go in for Peck!" Bill seemed to decide.

"Pikachu, use Charm!" Ash countered. Pikachu stood his ground and rounded his eyes, giving his best cutesy face at Nidorino.

As Nidorino was running it visibly flinched away, almost turning its head completely and slowing down. But it didn't entirely break stride and continued, only narrowly missing as Pikachu once again jumped backwards. Ash was content with that trade off; it was close, but Pikachu's quick reflexes were keeping them well out of range from killer blows for now.

"An impressive gambit. You may have weakened our attack, but even still Pikachu aren't known for their great defenses." Bill prodded. "Nidorino, Water Pulse!"

The entire crowd just about lost it at the surprise command, but Nidorino simply charged a ball of water with its mouth that was roughly the same size as itself to shoot off at Pikachu.

"Quick Attack, dodge around it!" Ash cried urgently.

Pikachu came poking out from the left side of the water bubble only to be slammed into by Nidorino using Horn Attack. He grunted under the impact as Nidorino growled, digging its feet into the ground to throw him backwards.

"Nuzzle!"

Bless his trainer's quick thinking, Pikachu couldn't help but think as he made sure to drag his sparking cheek across Nidorino's head as he was flung backwards. Ash noticed the effect of paralysis take place; thankful he wasn't too late. Bill was right, even with lowered attack Nidorino dealt a mean punch.

But this was by no means unwinnable, Ash decided with a smile.

"Get ready Pikachu!" Ash instructed.

Get ready for what? Pikachu did not bother to think about that, instead he just braced himself as Nidorino tried to shake off bits of dancing electricity from its body.

"Water Pulse, again!" Bill ordered. This one was bigger than the last one, roughly doubling in size. Nidorino fired it without any hesitation, seeming to know the plan.

"Quick Attack!" Ash ordered confidently.

He ignored everyone around him. It was about him and Pikachu now, and the trust they had in each other. Pikachu, to his credit, didn't hesitate and sped off. He was just about to dodge left but instead turned to the right at the last moment, and Ash clenched his fingers. Step One, done.

Step Two should reveal itself any…

There came Nidorino, off the right of the Water Pulse having predicted the mix-up. Perfect. Just a few more seconds.

"Block it with Brick Break!" Ash changed commands abruptly.

Pikachu seemed to fall out of Quick Attack more than switch, only barely landing and having enough time to spin to block Nidorino's horn. If it wasn't for just how fast Quick Attack was moving compared to Nidorino, Pikachu could've been a sitting duck. But Step Three landed fine with Pikachu once again holding off Nidorino's horn with his tail.

"Smash it! Into the water!"

More gasps came about as Pikachu angled his tail to throw off Nidorino's balance for just a second before smacking into it again from the side of its face and throwing the poison-type into the ball of water. It exploded all over the two of them as Nidorino was thrown through it.

They landed, both a little rougher than usual. They were both still standing but breathing heavily.

"That was pretty clever, using my own Water Pulse against me like that." Bill complimented. Ash grinned. "But you'll need more than my own firepower to win here. Fury Attack, go!" Bill continued.

Ash didn't stop grinning, even as Nidorino ran towards Pikachu. It was at a slower speed, considering the paralysis, but was moving plenty fast to do serious damage. Luckily, they didn't get that far.

"Let it rip, Pikachu! ThunderShock!" Ash cried out suddenly.

Pikachu jumped into the air and, while smiling what could only be described as a devious smile, shot out a brilliant yellow arc of electricity down at Nidorino. The Poison Pin Pokemon ran directly into the line of fire and was overcome quickly by the shock, halting its charge as it cried out.

It only lasted a few moments, but it was enough to bring Nidorino down by the time Pikachu landed. Bill was stunned as Nidorino rolled onto its side while Pikachu took a deep breath.

"Unbelievable! For the first time our sponsor Bill has lost a Town Tournament here in Cerulean City!" Nurse Joy cried to everyone, who seemed to be torn between cheering and pure shock.

"Pikachu!" Ash cried as he picked up his starter.

"Pikapi!" Pikachu cried back as they embraced excitedly.

Their cheeks rubbed together as they laughed, both getting a small electric shock from it but neither caring much. They didn't open their eyes until Bill called out to them.

"That was an impressive showing, Ash. Nidorino is my best battling Pokemon. It's always done well in these events." Bill told him.

"I can see why! You were really strong. That was a great battle, Bill. We had so much fun!" Ash praised excitedly.

"I should be saying that to you. I don't often battle; I don't consider myself any good at it. Not really. But it feels sportsman-like to participate in these tournaments, so I try to either host or participate, if not both, and doing so every year gives me a big advantage over a lot of others. For you to beat me is… refreshing." Bill admitted with a big smile.

He even looked like a weight was lifted off his shoulders as he spoke. Ash felt lighter too, like it was only right to match his energy.

"I think you're great at battling!" Ash said enthusiastically.

"You weren't so bad yourself." Gary's voice interrupted, coming over to clap Ash on the shoulder.

Misty, Brock and Leaf weren't far behind him, approaching soon after.

"I'll say! Training in that river really did pay off, huh?" Misty commented, sliding in next to Ash. He smiled at her.

"You kids from Pallet Town were all very impressive today. As the winner, Ash, I already have rewards for you. But I'd like to give each of you a prize for the talent you've shown me here today. The remaining three of you come see me in my Sea Cottage, just North on Route 25, before you move on from Cerulean, would you?" Bill implored them.

The group all seemed surprised by the offer but were quickly shaken out of it when Nurse Joy came over with the prizes. She passed some to Bill so he could reward Ash as the sponsor.

"First, accept this Gold Nugget. This is the standard reward; I make sure I have one to give away every time I hold this tournament. May this Gold Nugget bring you the prosperity the Nugget Bridge has Cerulean City." Bill handed Ash a palm sized gold ball.

It was heavier than it looked, Ash thought as he tucked it into his pocket for now.

"Of course, you will be compensated for winning. 3500 Pokedollars was directly transferred into your trainer account already. That leaves us with this, the Nugget Bridge cloth." Bill handed over a small piece of soft cloth to Ash.

It was a foot long and a foot wide when unfolded with a hand-sewn likeness of the Nugget Bridge on it in white and gold with a baby blue background, mimicking water. It was pretty and gloriously soft, so he tried to fold it carefully while Bill presented another prize.

"And, I have here a TM for your troubles. This is the TM for Agility. I hope you make excellent use of it." Bill handed over the case to Ash.

"Thanks a lot! You can bet we will!" Ash promised him.

"Finally, I have this." He handed over a small red ticket to Ash. "This is a ticket to board the S.S. Anne. I wasn't planning on giving any away, but you kids really impressed me today." He couldn't help but chuckle a little. "There's going to be a tournament on board that's invite-only. Word is it's to scout trainers with strong potential."

The group couldn't hold on to their surprise, and it only made Bill laugh harder.

"Don't look so surprised! You all did very well for being so new, especially you Ash." Bill said. "Anyway, come see me before you head out to pick up your own S.S. Anne tickets. And tell Ritchie too, it'd be a shame if one of you couldn't compete. I think the four of you will rock the ship!" He finished with a wave, beginning to depart while Gary and Leaf excitedly thanked him.

"Well, I guess that gives us more to do while we're here." Leaf commented. "I guess I'll go find Ritchie and tell him the good news. See you guys later, okay?" She departed quickly.

"And I'm gonna go call Gramps and tell him the good news. Maybe he can give me an insight into who else will be on the S.S. Anne. He's always good for insider knowledge like that." Gary decided, punching his palm. "Smell ya later, Ash-y boy!" He quickly took off running towards the Pokemon Center.

Ash, Misty and Brock were left alone as the crowd disappeared around them.

"Congrats on your win, Ash!" Misty said excitedly. Ash beamed back at her, clenching his fists.

"Thanks! We couldn't have done it without you, Misty! You were so right about battling on the Nugget Bridge! We got loads of good luck over there this morning, didn't we Pikachu?" Ash replied.

"Pika! Pikachu!" Pikachu agreed happily, sparking his cheeks lightly. Misty and Brock noted with amusement that Ash didn't even flinch.

"We beat every trainer on there in a row! They were tough, but we pulled through in the end. Pikachu even perfected Quick Attack!" Ash bragged, scratching Pikachu's head.

"That was quite the surprise." Brock noted. "I'm glad all your training is paying off. Bill's right, you're getting a lot better very quickly."

"That's because of all the battles we're doing! Every little bit counts." Ash replied with a nod. He paused. "I think we have to go talk to Officer Jenny again, though."

"What?"

"Why?"

Brock and Misty asked respectively.

"At the end of the Nugget Bridge this morning, after I beat all those trainers, a guy gave me a nugget as a prize, like he was waiting there for someone to do it. And then he asked if I wanted to be a member of Team Rocket." Ash's eyes narrowed at the memory.

"Did you battle him too?" Misty asked worriedly.

"We did battle, but Pikachu handled him pretty good." Ash leaned his head against Pikachu's as he spoke.

"You better be careful, Ash. At this rate you'll singlehandedly take down every Team Rocket member in Kanto." Brock joked, and Ash and Misty couldn't help but share a laugh.

"Ash Ketchum, feared by criminals across the region." Ash mocked the idea himself, gesturing widely with his hands.

"I guess you're probably right though. Another visit to Officer Jenny is probably the smart move." Brock agreed after the round of laughter stopped.

"Who knows, maybe she's already dealt with it?" Misty suggested optimistically.

They could only hope that was the case as the small group made their way back to the police station.

And thus, the Nugget Bridge Arc has (finally) come to a close! Next up, more from Cerulean! I warned you this would be a MAJOR plot hub town. I've taken a lot of liberties with the events that surround this time frame both in the games and the anime to try and make something seamless and unique, but also that is recognizable from both. Such as Ash winning his SS Ticket fair and square in the tournament, but the others having to make the journey up to the Sea Cottage. And yes, there will be quite a few tournaments throughout the story. I can't say all of them will be as focused on, as this is the first and one of the more important ones, but I hope everyone enjoyed!

In case anyone is curious, Bill did NOT throw any matches. He's a casual trainer who wins these tournaments that are mostly comprised of newbie trainers, he often wins because his Pokemon can take more punishment than theirs can. His only shot at beating Gary was that Metronome, and Abra is his oldest and most experienced Pokemon and he still nearly lost to Ritchie. Bill's Nidorino is his muscle, his strongest in sheer force, but it wasn't enough to compensate for Ash and Pikachu's teamwork and strategy.

I'll include summaries of the other Pallet kids below, but I won't give any spoilers! So it'll just be the Pokemon we've seen them use so far, and I will NOT be counting Gary's 40 Pidgey in this :)

Anyone have any guesses as to what will happen in the upcoming Cerulean Arc besides Ash's gym battle? Looking forward to it!
