Coming to a halt in the kitchen, Mr. Nosy let go of his new best friend and risked a glance toward the bedroom. There was no sign of Mr. Small or the other Mr. Nosy. He sighed, thinking, They must have gone through the portal already.
A familiar voice beside him startled him and he looked down at Small as he said," I'm sorry you and your friend had an argument, I really am, but can you bring Mr. Nosy back, s'il vous plait?"
Shaking his head, Mr. Nosy turned away and walked farther into the kitchen. Footsteps followed him. "Why not?" Small asked.
"He's with the other you now," Mr. Nosy muttered, stopping beside the table and pulling out a chair. He flopped down.
Small joined him. "Why did he take him?"
Mr. Nosy sighed. What was he to say? Sorry but your boyfriend is gone forever and you have to deal with me now. But look on the bright side, you'll never see the other you again. And neither will I and I'm glad of that at least.
For a couple of minutes it was silent, then Small cleared his throat and said," There's gotta be a way to get him back. Didn't you mention a portal? Would you tell me how to open it?"
Mr. Nosy stared into his eager gaze. He exhaled deeply. "No," he finally said. "I'm not opening it or telling you how to open it. I'm sick of him always bossing me around and making me do stuff I don't want to do." Oh, but you did want to do it, a voice said at the back of his mind and he shuddered. What if the voice was right? What if he did want to hurt the human girl? What if he enjoyed it as much as Mr. Small did? No, he told himself sternly. I did not enjoy it! I'm not like him!
Small broke into his thoughts. "Have you ever been in love?" he asked seriously.
"Not with my best friend," Mr. Nosy answered.
"But you have been in love, right?"
The light green Mr. Man said nothing but nodded slowly. He didn't want to confess who he's been in love with. Even his former best friend didn't know that.
"Imagine having that person taken from you all of the sudden and you're told you can never see them again. How would you feel?"
Mr. Nosy didn't meet his sad gaze. The truth was, something like that has happened to him. He fell in love, but unable to tell her or his best friend, he had to see them together and he could do nothing about it. He didn't want to hurt them or confuse things. Then when Mr. Small came up with the idea to do that to the human girl, Mr. Nosy was shocked and didn't want to do it, but his best friend talked him into it. Part of him thought they'd do it and things would be the same afterwards, so when Mr. Small said they could never visit her in a friendly way again, Mr. Nosy was devastated and he regretted everything they did to her.
Small continued. "Please, I'm begging you. Bring him back. He means the world to me, and… no offense but you may look like him but you're not him."
Mr. Nosy looked down at his wide, sad eyes, and he found himself feeling sorry for him, but there was nothing he could do. He knew once his Mr. Small formed a plan, nothing will change his mind or make him back down. Like it or not, this situation was permanent and Small needed to understand that.
Sighing, he shook his head and said," I can't bring him back. I'm sorry. Even if I wanted to go back, Mr. Small won't listen to me. But I don't want to go back," he quickly added.
"What happened? Why are you two so different from us?"
Mr. Nosy sighed again. He didn't want to explain this. He was tired and just wanted to forget about everything he's done. "I'll tell you later," he promised, standing up. "I'm going to turn in early tonight and maybe tomorrow will be better." He paused and looked down at his former best friend's counterpart. "I am sorry, but there's really nothing I can do to bring him back." He wanted to say more, but he was lost for words.
Head down, he walked to the bedroom. He could see Small watching him leave, and he felt his sadness like it was his own, but he didn't look back and he was thankful when he entered the bedroom and climbed into bed.
The sun was still up, but it's been a long day and he just wanted to sleep. But his dreams were dark and filled with Mr. Small yelling at him and threatening to replace him. The last part of his dream was watching his best friend and his counterpart disappearing into the closet. A bright light blinded him and he found himself waking up.
He gasped and sat up, panting. He looked out the window and saw that it was dark now. He was tense and he forgot what world he was in for a moment. He half-expected Mr. Small to storm into the room and get upset that he was sleeping instead of doing whatever he wanted him to do. But that didn't happen and he remembered he was in a different Dillydale and he relaxed a little.
Then he heard sobbing and he turned to see Small sitting beside the closet, his face pressed against the door as if he was trying to hear his friend. He was crying and Mr. Nosy felt sorry for him. But he didn't know what else to say other than what he already said. He just hoped over time he'll get over his boyfriend and accept the other Mr. Nosy.
Sighing, Mr. Nosy laid back down. He stared at Small for a while, until he flipped over and fell back to sleep again, but it was a restless sleep and he dreamed dark dreams the whole time he was asleep.
