Mr. Small found his best friend's counterpart leaning against the wall beside the closet. He seemed to be sleeping, but from his pitiful whimpers, he was having a bad dream. For a split second, he wondered if he should have separated him and his boyfriend like he did. Then his heart hardened once more and he stomped over there, slapping him to wake him up.
Nosy jumped to his feet, gasping from pain and shock, knocking Mr. Small back. He picked himself up and glared at the bigger Mr. Man. "Watch it!" he snapped.
The light green Mr. Man stared at him, then he frowned and sat back down. "So it wasn't a dream," he muttered. He put his hand on the closet door and stared at it wistfully. "He's really not here, is he?"
Mr. Small rolled his eyes. "He's not here, but I'm him, so get over it. Now come on, we have work to do." He turned to leave and heard Nosy run to catch up to him.
"You said that yesterday," the nosy Mr. Man pointed out. "What kind of work are we going to do?"
Mr. Small stopped in the living room and turned to his former best friend's counterpart. "Everyone in this Dillydale mustn't know you're not from here. You must act like your counterpart and do NOT give away anything that'll reveal our portal. Do you understand?"
The bigger man was looking confused. "But why? Can't I just go home? Maybe if you apologize to your Mr. Nosy–"
"I will NOT apologize!" the small Mr. Man shouted. He glared at Nosy. "I MIGHT take him back if HE apologizes, but I will not back down first."
Nosy titled his head to the side. "Why not? The other Mr. Small would apologize if he was in the wrong."
"You think I'm in the wrong?" Anger burned in him. "He's the one who is wrong! He won't last more than a week in the other Dillydale! He'll never admit it, but he enjoys the same things I do and once he realizes he's cut off from them, he'll come crawling back!"
Shocked, Nosy gasped. "What things?" he asked.
"If you stay here long enough, you'll find out, and who knows? Maybe you'll like them, too."
A long buried memory was pulling at him. He felt like he's done something like this before and had to explain all this to someone else. He figured it must not be important since he forgot it so he just shrugged and said to Nosy," First lesson is you must obey me, no questions and no hesitation. Do you understand?"
"Obey you?"
Mr. Small tried so hard not to lose his patience though he was so very close to blowing up at his best friend's counterpart. Mr. Nosy wasn't this hard to break. He seemed willing to obey him in the beginning, but over time he got harder to handle. But why was the beginning so easy? Again something was nagging at him. Did he forget something important?
He shook his head and he snapped," Just obey me, okay?"
"A-And if I… don't?" he asked shakily.
Mr. Small narrowed his eyes at him. "You don't want to do that. But if you don't obey me, let's just say, you'll regret it." He took a step toward him and Nosy backed up. Satisfied, Mr. Small turned and spoke over his shoulder as he headed to the telescope. "Mostly we keep an eye on everyone, make sure they're all in line."
Nosy followed him, looking both curious and terrified at the same time.
"In line?" Nosy echoed.
Mr. Small groaned. He was regretting all this so much, but he refused to back down. "Everyone is too stupid to realize this, but really we run things around here. We know everything everyone does, and if we– well if I don't approve, we go and try to fix things."
His new best friend had a wide-eyed expression on. "That sounds horrible! You're manipulating them!"
"And?" Mr. Small said quietly, daring him to say more. He glared at the bigger Mr. Man, and he was glad when he lowered his gaze and said no more. "That's what I thought." He sighed. "I think that's enough for today. I didn't get much sleep last night. Go do something, but do NOT leave this house. Do you understand? I don't want to risk people finding out that you're not the real Mr. Nosy."
Mr. Small jumped down the steps and headed toward the bedroom, but he stopped when Nosy called him back. "W-What am I supposed to do?"
"I don't care as long as you don't leave this house OR use the portal. In fact, I don't want you in the bedroom at all. I'm locking the door so you can't get in."
He turned his back to the miserable looking Mr. Man, and entered the bedroom. True to his word, he locked the door and then went to his bed. He hoped to fall asleep instantly, but he kept tossing and turning, seeing his former best friend's face in his dreams, and he knew it was him because he looked at Mr. Small with such hatred that he felt like he ripped his heart out and stepped on it.
