"So Ronn," started Mr. Small as he turned back to the human, but he was surprised to see him walking past the two Mr. Men and heading toward the door. "Where are you going?" he asked as he ran to catch up to the personality controlling Scarlet's body.
Ronn came to a halt, crossing his arms. "I don't have to tell you anything," he said in an annoyed voice, and then he added," But you have to tell me what is going on."
Mr. Small wasn't sure how to reply, and he felt relief wash over him when Mr. Nosy walked over to them, talking to the human so the small Mr. Man didn't have to answer.
"Do you know a guy named Tyler?" Mr. Nosy asked when he got in front of Ronn.
The human's eyes narrowed as soon as he heard Tyler's name. "Yeah, I know him." His voice was full of disgust, but Mr. Small could have sworn he heard a hint of fear in his tone as well.
"Well he is threatening to destroy our town," Mr. Nosy explained, but Ronn spoke before he could continue.
"You are goners then," the human said simply as he pushed past the Mr. Men. He called over his shoulder," You might as well say goodbye to your town now, because once Tyler gets a plan in his head, he will achieve it no matter what he has to do."
Mr. Small ran in front of him before he could exit the house. "We already stopped one of his plans," he pointed out. "And we found out there is a way to stop him, but Jerry didn't get time to explain it all to us before you came out." He tried not to show it but he felt annoyed that Ronn had arrived right when they were hopefully about to find out how to stop Tyler.
Ronn rolled his eyes. "And that's my fault?" He glared at Mr. Smalll as if he was daring him to blame the personality for pushing Jerry back and coming out to replace him.
But Mr. Small didn't know exactly how this disorder worked. Scarlet said she can't control when someone comes out, he remembered. So maybe it's the same with the personalities themselves. They just come out whenever. They don't push to come out. Is that it?
Suddenly he realized Ronn was staring down at him, clearly waiting for an answer.
"No, of course it's not your fault," the small Mr. Man told him. He shifted his feet, adding," I'm just ready to stop Tyler so he won't hurt any more of our friends."
For a few seconds Ronn stared down at him. "What about Scarlet?" he finally asked.
Mr. Small was confused. "What about her?" He could see his best friend watching them from where he stood behind the two as if he thought Mr. Small could handle this, but silently the Mr. Man wished Mr. Nosy would get involved.
"Do you care about Scarlet or are you just doing this to save yourself?" Ronn glared down at Mr. Small.
That question surprised Mr. Small. "Why, of course we care about her," he told Ronn gently as he stared up at him. "That's why we need to stop Tyler and save her, along with the rest of our friends."
Once more Ronn's eyes narrowed. "Scarlet is your friend?"
"Yes," replied the small Mr. Man, not understanding all these questions.
Then without another word, Ronn walked around Mr. Small and started heading toward the door again. All Mr. Small could do for a few moments was stare after the boy before he realized his best friend was beside him. Then the two followed Ronn out of the house.
Once they were outside and after Mr. Nosy closed the door, Ronn turned to them. "Okay, I'll help," he said with a sideways glance.
"Great." Mr. Small looked up at him, wondering what Ronn could do to help, remembering that Jerry said each of them have their own job. What was Ronn's job? But before he had a chance to say anything, Mr. Nosy spoke up.
"Do you know who he is? Someone who connected that toy to Jerry?" the light green Mr. Man asked. Then he gasped. "Wait, where's the toy?"
Mr. Small realized the stuffed lemur was missing.
"Relax," Ronn said, rolling his eyes. "It's probably still inside."
Mr. Small took a calming breath. "Can you go get it, Mr. Nosy?"
The light green Mr. Man nodded and went back inside. They waited a few moments, and then Mr. Nosy came running out, eyes huge. "It's not there!" he cried.
Mr. Small gasped. "What? Where could it have gone?" He glanced at Ronn. "Do you have it?"
Ronn stretched out his hands. "Do I look like I have it?" he snorted.
Mr. Small frowned. Where could the toy have gone? They just stepped outside and nobody passed them to go into their house. Then he gasped, fear shooting through him. "Tyler!" he said out loud.
His best friend jumped in surprise and Ronn shook his head, but Mr. Small saw the worry in his eyes.
Now they had no advantage over Tyler and that couldn't be good. Mr. Small was wondering what they should do when Ronn started walking again. The Mr. Men exchanged a look before running after him.
For a while nobody spoke. Then Mr. Nosy pointed out," You never answered my question. Who was Jerry talking about that connected him with the toy?"
Ronn didn't answer right away. Finally he said with anger in his voice," You don't need to know that to stop Tyler."
The best friends halted and shared a worried glance before catching up to the human, slowing down when they got to him. "Then what do we need to know to help Scarlet?" asked Mr. Small, realizing that Ronn only seemed to want to help when he heard that Scarlet was their friend, so he thought to get Ronn to answer their questions, he needed to keep reminding him that they were doing it for the girl.
Ronn didn't answer right away, only kept walking. He was looking around, and Mr. Small noticed that the streets were empty. "Where is everyone?" Ronn asked as if he could read Mr. Small's thoughts.
"They must be hiding from Tyler," replied Mr. Nosy. He turned to Ronn as he added," What is the deal with this guy anyways?"
Signing, the human shook his head. "He's after Scarlet," he murmured.
Mr. Small exchanged a glance with his friend. But why? he screamed in his head, fighting down his rising impatience.
"There's got to be a reason why he wants Scarlet so bad," Mr. Nosy pointed out.
Ronn came to a halt and turned sharply to the two Mr. Men. "I'm sorry, do you know Tyler more than we do?" His eyes burned with anger. "Okay then, why don't you tell me what Tyler wants?" He crossed his arms as he glared at the two.
Instantly Mr. Small and Mr. Nosy dropped their gazes. "Sorry," they said at the same time. Then Mr. Small added," Can you please tell us how to stop Tyler?"
"There's only one way to stop him," Ronn finally said after a moment of silence.
"That's what Jerry said." Mr. Small remembered what the nervous personality told them before Ronn came out.
"And he mentioned something about Scarlet's powers," Mr. Nosy added. "What are they?"
Ronn sighed and looked away. "They won't be powerful enough without the toy or…" He paused, reaching for his throat and then whispered," Or her necklace… Well," he went on briskly," we need to find them before Tyler does."
Mr. Small frowned. But where could they be? And where was Tyler?
Ronn continued to walk and when he rounded a corner he stopped in his tracks. "What happened here?" he gasped.
Following him, Mr. Small looked up and down the torn up road until he spotted the hole in the sidewalk where he almost fell in. He felt himself stiffened when he thought about what would have happened if his best friend hadn't been there. He saved me twice, the small Mr. Man realized, remembering that Tyler tried to take him from their home, but Mr. Nosy managed to scare him off.
"Tyler happened."
The angry voice of his friend broke into Mr. Small's dark thoughts, and he was surprised to see how furious Mr. Nosy looked. The light green Mr. Man very rarely showed anger.
Ronn stared at Mr. Nosy for a while. Then he sighed and turned to leave, but he stopped with one foot in the air when a voice spoke behind them.
"Hello, Ronn."
The three of them spun around, and Mr. Small widened his eyes in surprise when he saw a male human with brown hair. He was wearing blue jeans and a black shirt along with white sneakers. The guy had a series look on his face, but what startled Mr. Small the most was that he had Scarlet's shoulder bag and the toy lemur. Mr. Small wanted to ask him where he got those things, but he was uncertain if he should talk to this guy.
Mr. Nosy took a step toward the unknown human much to Mr. Small's discomfort. Usually if they met someone new, Mr. Small would jump on the opportunity to make another friend, but after meeting Tyler, he had learned not everyone can be trusted.
"Who are you?" Mr. Nosy asked the guy as he studied him as if he could read on him if he can be trusted or not. "And where did you get that bag?" He pointed to it as he spoke. "And that?" He was now looking at the toy lemur.
The male human opened his mouth to reply, but suddenly Ronn pushed the Mr. Men aside as he approached the guy. "Mike," he growled, glaring at him. "What are you doing here?"
Mike stared calmly at the red-haired guy. "Ronn," he said softly. "I've come to help Scarlet, of course."
"Why now though? You were glad to sit by before but now you show up? Why?" There was anger and sadness in the kid's voice, and Mr. Small was wondering if they shouldn't trust this guy after all.
Mike returned Ronn's furious glare with a look of calm. Then he looked past the kid and approached the Mr. Men. Mr. Small took a step back as he stopped in front of them. "Greetings, Mr. Small," he said to the small man. Then he turned to the light green Mr. Man, dipping his head. "Mr. Nosy, would you like to hold the toy?" He reached out his hand and Mr. Nosy quickly took it and hugged it, looking very relieved.
Mr. Small's eyes were huge as he stared up at the guy, but before he could speak, Mike added," Don't worry about how I know you. That's not important." He turned to Ronn. "We need to stop Tyler."
"Oh! Now you're a part of this! Well, we don't need your help," he growled, pushing past Mike. "We can handle Tyler without you."
In a flash, Mike was in front of Ronn. "Don't forget who created you," he spoke softly. "I made you and the others to protect Scarlet. You failed. Now I have to get involved." He leaned closer to him, a hint of anger in his voice. "And now Tyler has dragged all these unsuspecting characters into his scheme and I have no choice but to stand up to him."
Without thinking, Mr. Small ran to the humans, getting in between them and pushing them away from each other. "Don't fight," he said quickly. "I think Tyler is an equal enemy to us all so there's no point in fighting while he runs loose, planning heavens knows what."
Mike, looking completely calm again, turned to Ronn. "Mr. Small is right," he said with a nod. "Why don't we put our differences aside to help Scarlet?"
For a few moments, Mr. Small thought Ronn was gonna object, but in the end, he muttered," Fine."
Relieved that the argument was settled without anymore issues, Mr. Small turned to the brown-haired human. "So you know about Tyler and Scarlet?" he asked.
Mike nodded, shifting the bag on his shoulder to a different spot. "I created Ronn, Jerry, and Ace to protect Scarlet from Tyler."
