Chapter 29: Dark Truths & Hidden Pasts
A dim lit corridor within the depths of Castle Oblivion seemed to stretch on endlessly. Terios wandered through it, his mind racing, haunted by the chaos of earlier events. His breath was uneven, each step feeling heavier than the last, as if the weight of the truth itself was crushing him.
The earlier confrontation with Aqua had left Terios's thoughts in disarray. Names and faces flashed before him, fragments of a past he could no longer make sense of. He had to focus, he had to find Naminé—she could fix this, she had to. But why did his memories keep betraying him? What was real and what wasn't?
As he pressed forward, the world around him seemed to shift. His memories took control, pulling him back to a night long forgotten.
Terios's Memory
The hedgehog found himself standing at the entrance of a Research Facility, the same one from that fateful night when the Heartless attacked his home.
The air was thick with darkness, and Shadow Heartless swarmed everywhere. The cold emptiness of the facility seemed to echo with the screams of those who had vanished. Where were the researchers? Were they consumed by the Heartless, lost to the darkness forever? Terios moved through the chaos, his senses heightened by the urgency of the moment.
Suddenly, a desperate voice cut through the noise.
"TERIOS!"
He turned quickly, his heart pounding. Running toward him was Naminé, her expression filled with fear and confusion. She looked so small, so fragile.
"I can't find them! I can't find mother or father!" she cried, her voice trembling.
Terios knelt beside her, trying to calm her down.
"Stay calm, Naminé. We'll fight through this, and we'll find them. I promise."
He reached out to her, his mind focused on the mission. They had to survive this—they had to.
But then, everything changed.
The scene in his memory glitched, like a broken mirror fracturing into pieces. Terios blinked, his heart lurching as Naminé's form wavered, and in her place, stood a young girl with blue hair and piercing blue eyes. The sight jolted him.
"No… no, you're not Naminé!" Terios's voice wavered, disbelief flooding his senses. "This is impossible!"
The small girl, though unfamiliar, looked up at him with the same desperate plea in her eyes.
"Terios, we need to find them. You need to save them."
Terios staggered backward, his thoughts spiralling.
"Who are you?!"
His mind scrambled to reject the memory, to cling to the familiar version he knew. This couldn't be real, it had to be some trick. But the pain in his heart told him otherwise.
The vision faded, leaving him disoriented and floored by the sudden shift in his memory. Terios dropped to his knees, clutching his head in agony.
"Why? Why are my memories doing this?!"
The confusion and torment were unbearable.
He forced himself to stand, though his legs felt like they could give out at any moment. He needed to find Naminé. She was the key—she could fix this. She had to. Staggering forward, Terios moved with sheer determination, still haunted by the girl with the blue eyes.
The weight of the past bore down on him with each step, and with every breath, the truth he fought so hard to keep buried threatened to come crashing down.
Meanwhile in The Doctor's Lab...
"Pathetic," the Doctor remarked in annoyance, his voice dripping with disdain as he observed the monitor, showing Terios on the verge of a breakdown.
Standing beside him, Robotnik watched the scene unfold. Terios, once seemingly under control, was unravelling before their eyes, gripped by some internal struggle.
"Is he starting to go off the rails?" Robotnik asked, his confusion deepening as he turned toward the Doctor.
The Doctor shook his head, clearly unimpressed. Folding his arms across his chest, he let out a sigh of disappointment.
"Yes. It seems Terios's true memories are starting to fight back against the false ones we implanted into his mind," the Doctor revealed coldly. "Something must have triggered his real memories—the ones from before I modified him into my puppet."
Robotnik looked with surprise, trying to process what the Doctor had just said.
"Hold on," he began, his tone tinged with disbelief. "I thought you created the hedgehog?"
The Doctor gave a small, amused chuckle, turning away from the screen to walk toward a large, imposing pod. Within it was a shadowy figure—the Replica.
"Yes and no, my dear Robotnik of the past," the Doctor replied, his voice carrying an air of superiority.
He stopped at a nearby console, his gloved fingers dancing across the keyboard as the console flickered to life. The pod illuminated slightly, casting a dull glow on the figure inside.
Robotnik's patience was wearing thin.
"You want to start making sense?" he demanded, crossing his arms.
The Doctor paused, his eyes glinting with amusement as he looked at a screen that displayed Terios's vital signs. He was ready to reveal more.
"Terios wasn't a creature I physically created," the Doctor explained, his voice calm but cutting. "He was already like this when the Organization found him—sealed away in stasis."
"What?!" Robotnik's eyes widened in shock. "So, they stole his body?"
"In a way, yes," the Doctor replied smoothly. "But he was a blank slate, a shattered being when they found him. Useless. They needed my genius to perfect and complete him."
Robotnik narrowed his eyes, his voice laced with irritation.
"But what about you saying you created him to stop Sonic? What does it mean?"
The Doctor turned back to the console, his fingers tapping rhythmically as he pulled up additional data. His expression shifted into something more serious, more reflective.
"Ah yes, that part of the story..."
He paused, as if savouring the revelation to come.
"You see, Terios was improved upon, enhanced by my design and the power of a crystal shard—something found in the Realm of Darkness. This shard gave him the power to traverse time and space. It is the source of his ability to manipulate reality as he does."
"To stop Sonic?" Robotnik asked again.
"That was the plan, yes. The Organization found him a threat and the rodent needed to be exterminated," The Doctor revealed. "But things, as you know, took a different path."
Robotnik's confusion grew, but before he could question further, the Doctor continued, ignoring the concerns of his ally.
"The shard powering Terios, it belonged to an entity… a being from an erased timeline," the Doctor's voice dropped to a chilling tone.
He turned his gaze toward Robotnik, his eyes dark with the truth he was about to reveal.
"A being called Mephiles the Dark."
Elsewhere...
After his climactic battle with Marluxia, the ruler of Castle Oblivion, Sora emerged victorious. However, his journey had come at a cost. The manipulation of memories throughout the castle had left Sora, Donald, and Goofy in a state of confusion, their past and present tangled beyond recognition. Naminé, the one responsible for altering these memories, offered a solution—but it came with a price. To restore their memories fully, they would have to enter a deep sleep, forgetting everything that had transpired in Castle Oblivion, including their encounter with her.
Ever trusting and filled with hope, Sora agreed, alongside Donald and Goofy. As they approached the giant pods where their memories would be restored, Donald's apprehension was clear.
"To remember again, we have to sleep in that?" Donald asked, pointing to the towering pod, his voice tinged with worry.
Naminé nodded gently.
"Yes. It will take some time, but I'll take care of you," she reassured him, her expression soft and understanding.
Goofy scratched his head, his concern evident.
"Gawrsh, when we wake up, we won't remember who ya are anymore…"
"But how are we gonna thank you?" Donald asked, his voice laced with sadness.
Before Naminé could respond, Jiminy Cricket, their tiny companion, hopped onto Sora's shoulder.
"Don't worry about that!" he chirped. "I'll make a big note in my journal. And it'll say, 'Thank Naminé.'"
Donald smiled, visibly relieved.
"Oh, good. That makes me feel better."
"Well, good night then, Naminé," Goofy said warmly.
"Good night, Goofy," Naminé replied as Donald and Goofy left to enter their pods.
Sora turned toward Naminé, his eyes filled with warmth and trust.
"You too, Sora," Naminé said, her voice wavering slightly.
Sora gave her a warm smile.
"Okay," he replied.
"All of this may have started with a lie," Naminé confessed, "but I'm glad I got to meet you, Sora."
Sora's smile widened.
"Yeah, me too. When I finally found you, and even when I remembered your name, I was happy. The way I felt then—that was no lie."
Naminé returned the smile, though there was a heaviness in her heart.
"Goodbye," she said quietly.
But Sora shook his head.
"No, not goodbye!" he affirmed. "When I wake up, I'll find you. And then there won't be any lies. We'll be friends for real. Promise me, Naminé."
"You're going to forget making that promise," Naminé reminded him, her voice tinged with sadness.
"If the chain of memories comes apart, the links will still be there, right?" Sora asked, his conviction unwavering. "So, the memory of our promise will always be inside me somewhere. I'm sure of it."
"Yeah, you're right," Naminé agreed, touched by his words. "Okay, it's a promise."
Sora and Naminé linked their pinky fingers, sealing the promise. As Sora began to climb into his pod, Naminé's voice stopped him one last time.
"Sora... some of your memories are buried deep in the shadows of your heart. I won't be able to find them. But don't worry—you made another promise to someone who could never be replaced. She is your light. The light within the darkness. Remember her, and all the memories lost in the shadows of your heart will come to the light."
Sora looked down at the good luck charm in his hand, the one Naminé had changed—once Kairi's. It had reverted to its original form when he thought of her. Memories of Kairi, Riku, and more of his friends began to stir in his heart and mind.
"Kairi…" Sora whispered. "My friends…"
Suddenly, another memory surfaced. Sora reached into his pocket and pulled out a glowing object.
"Oh, I almost forgot," he said.
Naminé blinked in surprise. Sora held out the green Chaos Emerald in his hand.
"I found this after my battle with Marluxia," he explained. "It helped me sort of remember someone else. Someone important."
"You mean, Sonic?" Naminé asked, her eyes softening.
"Yeah, Sonic, that's it" Sora replied, his voice filled with fondness. "He seemed like a great friend during my last adventure."
Naminé smiled warmly.
"He's a remarkable individual," she exclaimed.
Sora's expression became more serious as a thought crossed his mind.
"The emerald… It feels like this Sonic needs it more than I do now. If you find him, could you give it to him please?"
Naminé took the emerald and nodded.
"I promise, Sora."
With that, Sora entered the pod and settled in. As it closed around him, the darkness slowly enveloped him. He drifted into a deep sleep, the memories of his adventure lingering, even as they began to fade.
Naminé stood in front of the pod, a wistful smile on her face.
"Until we meet again, Sora," she whispered.
But before she could turn away, a voice rang out, shattering the stillness of the room.
"Naminé!"
Startled, Naminé spun around to see Terios, staggering toward her. His red eye glowed fiercely, pulsing uncontrollably as if the energy within him was on the verge of tearing him apart. His movements were erratic, driven by the pain coursing through him.
"Terios?" Naminé remarked, her shock evident.
"Why?" Terios growled, his voice filled with desperation and confusion. "Why are my memories changing? What is happening to me?!"
Before Naminé could react, Terios lunged forward, gripping her shoulders tightly. His red eye burned with agony, his mind unravelling before her eyes.
"You have to help me!" Terios pleaded, his voice trembling. "Please, Naminé! Make it stop!"
Naminé could feel his pain, the chaotic torrent of conflicting memories tearing him apart from within. She wanted to comfort him, but before she could utter a word, Terios dragged her deeper into the shadows, pulling her into the dark corridor. His desperation was palpable, his mind on the edge of collapse.
Back in The Doctor's Lab
"Wow, this Mephiles sound incredible?" Robotnik muttered, a sense of awe creeping into his voice. "How did you come across this creature?"
"I crossed paths with him in that Realm of Darkness," The Doctor explained, his voice filled with a strange detachment.
"What happened to him? And how did you obtain a piece of his very being?" Robotnik inquired.
The Doctor, turning away from the console, cast a glance over his shoulder.
"Mephiles was defeated, or so I was told. But as a being of pure darkness, remnants of him still linger in the shadows, waiting. As for the collection of the shard—it wasn't my doing. It was the Organization's leader who found it, deep within the Realm of Darkness."
"And this shard is what gives Terios his abilities, correct?" Robotnik asked, now eager to understand the full scope of the situation.
"Exactly," the Doctor said, his tone cold and calculating. "He was created much like Project Shadow—using the DNA of Black Doom."
"Project Shadow?" Robotnik's eyebrows furrowed as the name stirred a distant memory. "My grandfather... He was working on something by that name, wasn't he?"
The Doctor nodded.
"Yes. Professor Gerald Robotnik's Project Shadow was the result of Mobian science and alien genetics, specifically the DNA of Black Doom. Terios is essentially a replication of that same project, but lacking in one key area."
"Lacking, how?" Robotnik pressed.
"Terios cannot naturally wield or control chaos energy like Project Shadow," The Doctor Affirmed. "He is not connected to this power, unlike the other hedgehog."
"Other hedgehog? Don't tell me Project Shadow is a hedgehog too?" Robotnik asked further.
"Indeed," the Doctor confirmed, his voice dropping to a more serious tone. "Shadow was engineered to be the ultimate lifeform, a weapon harnessing the power of chaos energy—a power that, unfortunately, Terios lacks. But genetically, they are disturbingly similar, both tied to Black Doom."
Robotnik, still processing the flood of information, folded his arms and narrowed his eyes.
"So, let me get this straight, the shard of this Mephiles gives Terios his abilities to bend time and space? Just like how this Shadow can use and harness chaos energy?" Robotnik questioned.
"Yes, correct" The Doctor replied, growing tired of all the questions.
"Alright, but that still doesn't explain everything," Robotnik countered with frustration. "What properties does the shard hold to allow Terios this power? Who exactly made Terios, and what was their purpose in creating him?"
The Doctor paused, his eyes gleaming with amusement form under his hood.
"Ah, the real questions. Who made him and why... well, that's the heart of it, isn't it?" He leaned back slightly, his tone dark and unreadable. "But I'm afraid I don't have time for that now. Terios is on the verge of breaking down completely and our plans will be in ruins, if he's not neutralised and replaced."
Robotnik's confusion deepened, but before he could ask further, the console lit up with a series of beeps and flashing lights.
"Replica Programmed: 100% Online," the screen read.
The Doctor turned toward the pod housing the Replica, his gaze dark and purposeful.
"It's time," he muttered coldly. "Time to unleash the Replica."
The room buzzed with an ominous energy as the Doctor's hand hovered over the controls, ready to set his next plan in motion.
White Space
Modern Sonic returned to the void with Shadow and Aqua by his side. As they emerged, they were greeted by Modern Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Rouge, Cream & Cheese, and Big & Froggy. Relief washed over the group as they saw their friends return safely, though there was a lingering curiosity about Shadow's presence.
"We're so glad you guys made it back okay," Tails said with obvious relief in his voice.
"No one can stop our teamwork," Sonic replied with a grin, giving his best friend a thumbs-up.
"And I see you found another Chaos Emerald," Knuckles remarked, seeing the cyan coloured gem in Sonic's gloved hand. "Good job, Sonic."
"Thanks Knux," Sonic said with a nod. "Another one to our collection."
Aqua took in the scene, observing the camaraderie between Sonic, Tails, and their friends. It was heart-warming, even in this strange, lifeless void, to see such a strong bond holding everyone together.
"Aqua, meet the rest of the gang," Sonic said warmly, gesturing first to Amy. "You remember Amy from the time we saved her in the Realm of Darkness."
"It's good to see you again, Aqua," Amy said with a warm smile.
"I'm glad to see you're well too," Aqua replied, returning the smile.
Sonic continued the introductions, turning to each member of the group.
"This here," Sonic said, motioning toward the red echidna, "is Knuckles. He's the guardian of the Master Emerald and can be pretty serious, but when it comes to helping out, he's got our backs."
Knuckles gave a confident nod as he introduced himself.
"Nice to meet you, Aqua. If you ever need someone to punch through a wall or deal with trouble, I'm your guy."
Sonic then gestured to a bat with a sly grin.
"And this is Rouge. She's, uh, great at finding valuable things, especially gems. She's got quite the sharp eye."
Rouge chuckled before she responded.
"Pleasure, darling. Big Blue's right, I'm quite good at getting what I want—especially if it's shiny. But I've also been known to help out from time to time."
Next, Sonic pointed toward a small rabbit and a flying blue creature with a red bow tie.
"This is Cream, and her little Chao companion, Cheese. They may be small, but they've got big hearts."
Cream gave a polite bow.
"It's very nice to meet you, Miss Aqua! If there's anything we can do to help, just let us know!"
Cheese fluttered around cheerfully, echoing Cream's sentiment.
Finally, Sonic smiled and motioned to the tall, friendly, purple cat and his amphibian companion.
"And over here, we've got Big and his pal Froggy. Big may look imposing, but he's really the gentlest guy around. And Froggy… well, he's just along for the ride."
Big gave a big, goofy smile and a wave.
"Hello! Froggy and I are happy to help! It's nice to meet you."
Froggy croaked quietly from his perch in Big's arms.
Aqua smiled warmly, nodding to each of them.
"It's so nice to meet all of you. Sonic sure has some wonderful friends," she exclaimed.
As the group settled into conversation, Sonic couldn't help but glance toward Shadow, who remained standing off to the side, his arms crossed and his eyes closed, deep in thought.
"Hey, Shadow! Come join us!" Sonic called out with his usual energy.
Without moving or opening his eyes, Shadow replied.
"Not now. I'm focusing."
Sonic chuckled and shrugged, turning his attention back to the group.
"So, what happened in that time hole?" Tails asked, his curiosity piqued.
Sonic exchanged a look with Aqua, and the two began recounting the events together.
"We were in the Keyblade Graveyard, and that's where we ran into this thing called the Lingering Will," Sonic started. "It's like an armour, filled with the will of a warrior from the past."
Aqua nodded in agreement.
"It was Terra's armor, but it's driven by his will and his rage," she continued. "He couldn't recognise me, though. It thought I was a threat… it thought we were all threats."
As Sonic and Aqua continued explaining the battle, Knuckles's expression grew thoughtful, almost spiritual. His eyes focused on the void as if sensing something deeper in the story.
"Warriors' wills… their rage can stay long after they've passed," Knuckles murmured, his voice low. "My people had stories of warriors whose spirits lingered because of unfinished business, their strength still holding onto the world."
The group fell silent for a moment, taking in Knuckles's words before Sonic grinned and lightened the mood.
"Well, luckily, we weren't on our own for long, because Shadow showed up to help out. Ain't that right, Shads?"
Shadow grumbled in response to Sonic's teasing, keeping his arms crossed and his eyes firmly closed, but Sonic wasn't deterred.
"And he wasn't just there for show—he's got these new powers now," Sonic added with enthusiasm. "I mean, those red and black wings? It's wild."
The group turned toward Aqua for clarification, as she looked thoughtful.
"Those powers and the energy he can channel, they come from his connection to Black Doom."
A collective gasp echoed through the group. Tails pieced things together quickly.
"Wait… is that why Shadow's here at Castle Oblivion? Is that the answers he's searching for?" he questioned.
"Yes, along with my own answers. We're both searching for something," Aqua admitted, her voice steady but laced with emotion.
Tails's eyes widened slightly, as if remembering something.
"Oh right, you were looking for someone. Was it Terra?" he asked.
Aqua shook her head, her expression softening with the weight of her search.
"No, it's someone else special to me."
Before anyone could ask further, Sonic's head suddenly throbbed with intense pain. He instinctively clutched the Cyan Chaos Emerald in his hand, its power pulsing violently.
"Agh!" Sonic groaned, his mind splitting with an overwhelming sensation.
"Sonic?" Aqua asked, sensing her friend was in pain.
Around him, the group—Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, Tails—all felt it too. The same sharp pain surged through their minds as if they were all connected to something larger. Sonic's body trembled as memories began to flood back to him.
However, Cream, Cheese, Big, Froggy and Aqua, stood unaffected, watching the others with concern. Shadow, also unaffected, sensed something out of place, finally opened his eyes and turned toward the group, his features furrowed as he stepped forward.
"What's wrong with them?" Cream asked, her voice small and filled with worry.
"Chao Chao?" Cheese chimed in, fluttering anxiously.
"The Chaos Emerald is connecting to their fragmented memories," Shadow revealed, observing the group's strained expressions. "It's filling in the gaps caused by the manipulation of this place. They're remembering something important."
Sonic, his mind still reeling, felt the memories solidifying, but they were incomplete—jumbled pieces trying to fit together. His body trembled as the echoes of the past flooded in, bringing a sense of urgency.
"What are the memories of?" Aqua questioned, turning to Shadow.
Shadow stood silently, observing the situation.
"I have a hunch. But, whatever it is, these memories are crucial. We need to give them time to process."
Sonic's Memory
Sonic, Donald, Goofy, Knuckles, and Kairi raced through the labyrinth of the corridors to get the young Princess of Heart to safety. Sonic took the lead and spin dashed his way through hordes of Shadow Heartless who got in their way. Donald used his magic to light up and freeze the creatures of darkness, with Goofy shield bashing as he charged forward. Knuckles too swung his powerful fists towards the Heartless threats, each connection bursting the Shadow Heartless into nothingness. Kairi was grateful for these new protectors aiding her, but she could feel Sora's heart lingering.
"Why did Sora have to do that?!" Sonic thought to himself, rushing down the staircase of the entrance, with the sound of the water feature echoing around. "We could have worked out a plan to rescue Kairi's heart, together!"
Sonic's green eyes were fixated on the large entrance door, which would take them back to the reversing waterfalls and the Gummi Ship parked nearby. However, as the blue blur, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy got near the door, they turned to see Kairi standing in the centre of the room, she could feel something and placed her hand on her necklace again, as if it was giving her courage and protection.
"Kairi, we can't stay here," Donald shouted out.
"Donald's right," Sonic added. "If we hang around too long, we will be overwhelmed. There is only so much we can fight back against these numbers."
"I know, but I still feel Sora," Kairi replied, her eyes looking around this grand entrance room. "It's as if he is calling out to me from the depths of this place."
"But he's gone," Goofy said sadly. "We have to get to safety."
Knuckles with his purple eyes looked around and suddenly he felt something also. His eyes widened and a warmth seemed to overtake him. Sonic turned to see Knuckles looking perplexed, he knew something was amiss.
"Knucks, what's up?" Sonic asked. "Are more Heartless on the way?"
Knuckle gave a deep breath through his nose, lowering his head, and closed his eyes. The red echidna seemed to have gone into a meditative state, his unique abilities allowed him to sense danger.
"I feel Kairi might be right," Knuckles said calmly, even in the height of this turmoil.
"Really?" Kairi asked in disbelief.
Knuckles gave another exhale through his nose and his senses were trying to detect Sora's presence within the darkness.
"I feel Sora's spirit is close, but his physical essence is gone," Knuckles revealed, trying to keep concentrated on the task at hand.
"So much for 'he's gone'," Sonic said with a slight taunt, remembering Knuckles' comments from earlier.
"Well, things change!" Knuckles responded, raising his head and looking at the blue blur with annoyance. "The kid is out there, but it's as if his body is surrounded by darkness."
"Darkness?" Donald asked curiously.
"Lost like Riku?" Goofy added.
"I don't know", Knuckles explained with a huff. "This feels a bit different to what I know and am used to on this wacky adventure."
"Sounds about right," Sonic replied with a sigh. "Everything seems to be straightforward, then another spanner in the works. This is indeed a confusing universe."
"I think we still need to leave and get Kairi to safety," Knuckles declared, turning to face the door in front of them. "We can regroup, strategize, and come back with clearer heads to rescue Sora."
"Good plan," Sonic said in agreement, giving a nod. The blue blur turned to Donald and Goofy, who were close to him. "You guys in agreement?"
"Yes," Donald nodded.
Goofy gave a stern look and nodded also, he knew it was too dangerous to be in this castle for too long.
Sonic nodded and then turned to Kairi, his green eyes looking to the Princess of Heart, who was still looking around the amazingly spacious and stylish entrance, her blue eyes piercing through the shadows of the room to seek Sora.
"Kairi, come on," Sonic said. "We'll take you back to Traverse Town and keep you safe there."
Kairi wanted to stay and search, but she knew her new friend was right. The girl with red hair nodded slowly and again touched her necklace, holding it tightly and she began to walk forward. However, before she could reach the others from the centre of the room, a lone Shadow Heartless materialised close to her. The creature twitched in its movement, but it seemed this one stood up much straighter and wasn't slouched.
"Watch out Kairi!" Goofy cried out, ready to rush to her aid.
Sonic, Donald, and Goofy made their way to Kairi to get her to safety, but Knuckles hesitated and could sense something. His purple eyes looked at the creature and he could feel a strange energy coming from it. Donald however, decided to try and scare off the lone Shadow.
"Confounded Heartless," Donald shouted. "Leave us alone would ya."
The duck mage used his staff to smack the Heartless on the head, which assembled more of a comical effect to scare off the Heartless.
"Move it creep," Sonic declared, moving his hands into his quills. "Or you'll end up with a ball of thunder coming your way."
However, the Heartless seemed unfazed and its yellow eyes were fixated on Kairi, like a puppy looking at its master. Kairi's blue eyes looked towards the small creature, her heart could sense something about this Heartless.
"That's odd," Goofy said. "Doesn't seem that this Heartless wants to fight."
"What do ya mean?" Donald replied with annoyance. "It could be fooling us."
Knuckles moved forward to the group and began to explain what he could feel from his senses.
"I feel a strange energy within this Heartless," Knuckles explained.
"What do you mean?" Sonic asked, turning to see his friend moving towards the group.
"I sense, light overwhelming the darkness," Knuckles affirmed.
"And?" Donald replied, still ticked off that Heartless wasn't leaving them alone.
"It does not seek violence or hearts," Knuckles revealed. "It seeks a friend."
"A friend?" Sonic questioned. "Dude, it's Heartless."
Ignoring Sonic's comments, Kairi looked deeper at the twitching Heartless in front of her, she knelt to its level and looked into its yellow eyes. Suddenly, when the eyes met, she could feel the presence she was searching for. It was all in the connection of the eyes, the windows to the soul and heart.
"Sora…" Kairi remarked in disbelief.
"What?!" Donald shouted out.
"No, it can't be?" Goofy added, taken back by this.
Sonic's green eyes looked to Heartless, then back to Knuckles, seeking an explanation. Everything he learned on his journey so far seemed to not make sense again. His mind raced back to Aqua in the Realm of Darkness, with her Heartless roaming free, but her husk still looked the same as her.
"This doesn't make any sense to me," Sonic said, shaking his head. "Knucks, is this Heartless Sora?"
Knuckles looked and gave a small nod before explaining, "It seems when Sora used that Keyblade to unlock his heart, he turned himself into a Heartless."
Sonic's adventure had been one of mystery, one with more questions than answers. He had read up on the powers of darkness and how Heartless came to be when a person lost their heart. But, he was expecting something different. When he met Aqua with Shadow, Aqua noted that her Heartless was more like her than a mindless beast. How could Sora turn into a Shadow variant? What made Aqua different from Sora? Sonic's mind raced with questions as he stared at Kairi and the Heartless again.
"Sora…" Kairi said softly, her eyes welling up.
"We need to get Sora's Heartless to Merlin," Donald suggested. "Maybe he can help return him to his normal state?"
"Good idea," Goofy said with approval. "If he's being obedient, I'm sure he will follow us to the ship."
Before Sonic or Knuckles could respond, a horde of Shadow Heartless appeared and surrounded the group, with their eyes locking onto Kairi and the Shadow Sora. These Heartless didn't look too friendly and without warning, they jumped into the air and aimed for the weaker Heartless in their ranks, Sora. Seeing this happen, Kairi quickly positioned herself closely to the Shadow Sora and hugged him tightly, ready to protect him.
"This time, I will protect you," Kairi said bravely.
The horde of Heartless dogpiled onto the two and Sonic, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy looked on in concern and frustration.
"Kairi!" Sonic shouted out, ready to get the Heartless off the two.
"Quick, they need our help!" Donald shouted out, ready to lend a hand.
"You don't have to tell me twice," Sonic said in haste, readying himself to lay the smackdown on these Heartless foes.
However, before the four could spring into action, a bright light began to shine through the small pile of dark Heartless, with the brightness piercing through the pile.
"What the?" Knuckles exclaimed, taken back by this.
"What is going on?" Goofy added, peaking past his shield.
The light from beneath the small mountain of Shadow Heartless got brighter and the intensity of the brightness enveloped the room, leading the heroes to cover their eyes from the blindness of this phenomenon. The light pierced through the horde of Heartless with ease and the room engulfed into pure whiteness, leaving no darkness unturned. Sonic tried to peak through his fingers, but the light was just too much for his green eyes.
"Damn," Sonic shouted out. "This is some bright stuff."
"Kairi!" Knuckles shouted out, covering his eyes with his arm. "Are you ok?"
Suddenly, the light and its powerful brightness that swept through the piled-up Shadows vanished, along with those pesky Heartless that jumped on Kairi and the Shadow Sora. The near-blinded heroes dropped their guard and looked to see if Kairi and the Shadow Sora were ok.
"Kairi?" Sonic asked, hoping she was ok.
As the light disappeared, there stood Kairi in the grasp of Sora, back in his human form. The Keyblade wielder had returned, and had his friend tightly in his arms, keeping her safe.
"Thank you, Kairi," Sora said softly, looking at his friend, who was tightly in his arms.
"Sora…" Kairi responded, her gentle tone grateful to feel and hear friend once again.
The faces of Sonic, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy lit up seeing Sora alive and well, especially as they all thought he was long gone from this mortal plane.
"Sora!" Donald and Goofy shouted out in joy.
"Kid!" Knuckles added in disbelief.
Sonic's eyes, once full of concern, were now gleaming with happiness. The usually cocky and full of attitude hedgehog was near tears seeing his friend once more. It was a great feeling to him that he was safe and back with everyone. The blue blur moved closer to Sora, who had now stopped hugging Kairi and turned his attention to Sonic.
"Hey Sonic, long time no see, huh," Sora said with a smile and a tease.
"Kid, you had me worried there," Sonic replied, tapping his friend on the arm. "Welcome back pal, I knew you would find a way back to us."
However, before Sora could reply, the voice of Silver broke through the reunion. It was as if the hedgehog from the future was calling out to them telepathically.
"Guys, get out of here!" Silver shouted out.
"Silver!" Sora replied, looking around for his silver friend. "Where are you? We can't leave you here"
"There is time to escape with us!" Sonic added, shouting to the sound of Silver's voice.
"There is no time. There are too many Heartless and I need to find Ansem. Get out and get Kairi to safety!" Silver ordered, his voice stern.
"Silver is right," Knuckles said, his voice showing concern. "Sora will need time to recover from that ordeal and Kairi will be safer back in Traverse Town."
Sonic turned to Sora and Kairi and looked at the duo from Destiny Islands, he gave them a look to say, "We need to get out of here."
Sora and Kairi nodded, and the two ran toward the exit, followed by Sonic, Knuckles, Donald, and Goofy. The Gummi Ship was not far away and just over by the reversing waterfalls at the World Gate. The group headed to the ship and back to the safety of Traverse Town, where they could regroup.
Sonic, Knuckles, Amy, Tails, and Rouge's pain vanished as suddenly as it had appeared, leaving them to reconnect with the memories that had been missing. Sonic shook his head, trying to shake off the disorienting experience. His vision cleared, and he steadied himself as the flood of memories began to settle.
"Guys? Are you all okay?" Big asked, his deep voice filled with concern as he watched the group recover from the sudden episode.
Sonic looked around, blinking a few times to refocus.
"Yeah, I think we're good now," he replied, his voice regaining its usual strength. He glanced over at the others, noting the expressions of confusion and realisation on their faces. "That was... intense."
Knuckles stretched his shoulders, still processing the new influx of memories.
"Feels like we just took a trip down memory lane, huh?" he muttered, glancing at Sonic. "But... everything's becoming much clearer now."
"What did you see?" Shadow asked, his voice calm but curious.
"It was Sora," Sonic replied, his grip tightening slightly on the Cyan Chaos Emerald. "When he came back from the brink of darkness, all thanks to his connection to his friend, Kairi."
The mention of Sora and Kairi struck something deep within Aqua, stirring her own memories. She had met those two once before, during her travels across the many worlds. She could feel a faint connection to them, almost like a distant echo of the past.
"Sora... Kairi..." Aqua muttered softly, her thoughts drifting.
Rouge caught the hesitation in Aqua's voice.
"Aqua, do you know them?" she asked, curious to piece together more of this puzzle.
Aqua hesitated, clearly torn, but before she could respond, another voice broke through the void with urgency.
"Sonic, we have a situation!"
The group turned to see the enigmatic figure who had been guiding them sporadically throughout their time in White Space. The man with the red bandages wrapped around his face, his long coat flowing behind him as he strode with purpose, had once again appeared, emerging from a dark corridor. His pace was brisk, and his gaze was focused straight ahead, cutting through the group's attention.
"Time is not on our side, and we must hurry," he said, his voice as urgent as ever.
"This is awfully convenient," Sonic remarked, glancing at his friends. "Just when we're about to get some answers here, Mr. Mysterious shows up again."
The man didn't break stride. His tone was demanding, commanding attention as he kept walking forward.
"The past can wait. We must find your smaller counterpart, quickly!"
Sonic exchanged a glance with the group. They could tell the situation was serious from the man's urgency. Without further hesitation, the group fell into step behind him. They rushed to find Classic Sonic and the rest of their friends, wondering what awaited them next.
