Chapter 13 - Whisker's and Woes

It's ok, It's ok, Remus thought, rocking back and forth on the creaky bed. I hope it doesn't break… He thought, aware of how one of the legs of the bed was close to breaking.

Suddenly, Remus' eyes stung as a sharp, white light filtered through the broken and destroyed binds.

Remus's heart began hammering in his chest and his breathing became labored as he fought against the searing pain spreading through his body.

"Stay in control!" he screeched, and he felt his spine cracking and he couldn't help but let out a screech of agony.

His eyes clouded as the pain got worse. Fur began sprouting from his skin and it felt like needles.

Warm, sour, bile rose in his throat, and he tried to swallow it, but the sourness choked him, and foam began to form at the edges of his mouth.

His gums began to hurt like fire and his teeth began sharpening, and becoming bigger, which made his gums hurt more.

Eventually, Remus barely felt in control anymore, and he couldn't help but let out a long, anguished wail.

Remus sat bolt upright, panting. Dreaming of full moons again… He thought warily, breathing heavily.

Remus squinted in the dim light of the room and noticed that his friends weren't in their beds. Weird… He thought, but what was the weirdest was that Sirius, James, and Peter were all gone.

Probably doing some prank, Remus thought, happy that he wouldn't need to be part of whatever crazy thing they were up to.

Suddenly, the door flung open and Peter, James, and Sirius ran in, quickly closing the door behind them.

"Were you you?" Remus questioned, aware that it was almost morning.

"Look what we got!" Sirius squealed, plopping something onto Remus' bed. It was a large, furry mass that was darkly colored and it smelled.

"What is that!" Remus gagged, and he tried not to breathe through his nose. I don't even want to guess what that is, Remus thought, looking away.

"Isn't it cute!" Sirius exclaimed, and Remus stared at him in disgust. How is a ball of who knows what cute!?

Suddenly, a noise came from the bundle and Remus stared at it. It was like a little mewling noise, suddenly, it did it again. Eventually, Remus made out that the mass of stuff was actually an animal, it was a cat.

Why is it so dirty!? Remus thought, I'll probably have to change my bedsheets now…

"C-Cute…" Remus stammered, the gross smell overwhelming him. "Where'd you even get it?"

"Oh!" James began, "We saw it near the lake and we just really wanted it so we caught it, and it scratched Sirius-"

Sirius rolled up his sleeve, revealing a small scratch. Anger flashed in his eye for a split second as he eyed the cat.

"What should we name him?" Peter squeaked.

"Name him!?" Remus screeched, "You're not thinking of keeping that thing are you!?"

"Sirius sounded,"

"Firstly, what if that is some kid's pet!" Remus said, "What if the poor kid lost their pet cat?"

"Well," Sirius began, "That means firstly, they are a bad owner for losing their cat, and secondly, it's their loss, so too bad."

Remus sometimes wondered why he put up with these people, Sirius clearly had no sympathy for someone who may have lost their pet.

"Let's brush him!" Peter piped in, grabbing the furry cat from Remus' bed. At least it's not on my bed anymore, Remus thought.

"Good idea," James responded, and began rummaging through some cabinets.

"I'm going to get ready," Remus told his friends, before heading off to the bathroom to shower and change into his clothes.

Remus dug through one of the cabinets in the bathroom, trying to find his comb, but it didn't seem to be there.

"Where is it…" He grumbled. "Guys! Have you seen my comb!?" he called from the bathroom, and when no response came, he walked out and was overcome by anger when he saw what Sirius was holding.

"Is that my comb!" Remus yelled and Sirius hid the item between his back, and was looking at Remus as though he were innocent.

"Erm…" Peter squeaked, clearly uncomfortable.

Remus walked up to Sirius, and snatched the brush from him. He almost gagged when he saw matted fur clumps between the wooden shafts, and chunks of something…

"Sorry…" Sirius whispered nervously and Remus shot him a disapproving look.

"At least the cat is brushed now…" Remus sighed, and he noticed that he could now make out legs, a face, a tail, and ears.

"I'm going to head down to breakfast…" he said at last, and was surprised to see that none of his friends wanted to come with him.

"You're literally going to suffocate it!" Remus exclaimed. James and Sirius were hugging the cat so hard that it probably wasn't breathing.

"We still need to name it!" Peter piped in.

"Oh!" said James, losing his grip on the creature slightly, "What about Godric? You know? Like Godric Gryffindor?"

"Yes!" exclaimed Sirius, who was now hugging it harder.

"Have fun getting ticks or fleas…" Remus grumbled. They have to lose interest in the cat eventually, right? Remus thought.

Sirius pressed his nose to Godric's fur, and immediately recoiled, "Ew! This thing stinks!"

"Let's give him a bath!" Peter suggested and James and Sirius nodded, they suddenly rushed out the door. The bath is that way, Remus thought, staring at the bathroom door. Oh —- Oh, they're going to the lake!

Remus rushed down and outside and saw the three friends by the lake, trying to get Godric to go in. The lake is going to be freezing! Remus thought, What are you doing!?

"Guys! You know the lake is cold right!?" Remus tried explaining but it was no use because Remus heard a splash sound.

Suddenly, Godric leaped out of the water, his fur fluffed up and bristling.

"Come on!" Sirius said, "You're almost clean!"

"Guys stop…" Remus argued, getting really annoyed.

Sirius dunked the cat in the water a second time, and it hissed, trying to scratch Sirius but he dodged in time.

Later that day, Remus decided to read a book by the fireplace while his friends were being crazy with their 'new pet'.

Suddenly, Remus heard a slight sniffling noise and turned to see a boy he didn't recognize sitting a few feet away.

"Erm…" Remus said uncomfortably, "Are you… Ok?"

"What? Me?" said the boy, as if he didn't realize Remus was there until a few seconds ago, "Not really…"

"What happened?" Remus asked.

"My pet rat…" the boy sniffed, "He's, he's missing…"

"Well he'll probably turn up eventually…" Remus responded, hoping it was true.

"Really? You think so?" the boy said hopefully, and now Remus really hoped the boy would find his pet.

"Yeah-" Remus was cut off when his three friends barged into the common room, the cat walking close by, and something was dangling from its mouth…

"Look what Godric caught! We saw it happen. He did it all by himself!" Sirius exclaimed, and Remus squinted and saw a light gray rat hanging from the cat's small mouth.

Remus' breath caught in his throat, please don't be the boys rat, please don't-

A wail came from next to Remus, and the boy Remus had been talking to ran up to the cat and snatched the rat from its mouth, crying.

"No! No, no!" he wailed and Remus looked sternly at his friends.

"What did you do…" Remus said angrily, and stood up right in front of the three of them.

"Erm… We didn't know…" James said guiltily and Remus turned and saw Peter looking really sad from where he stood.

The boy rushed out of the room, the creature dangling limply from his hands, and Remus felt extremely bad.

"I think it's time you let Godric go…" Remus said at last and Sirius looked at him with a look of dismay on his face.

"No! What! Come on! He's too cute!" Sirius argued, squeezing the cat tightly, too tightly.

"Fine… Fine…" Remus said, but he knew he'd have to do something about it…

Sirius, James, and Peter were working on their Potions homework, and luckily, Remus finished it early. He took the book he was working on and sat down at the fireplace, relishing the warmth of it.

Suddenly, a soft mewling sound came from somewhere, and Remus looked down to see two, big, yellow eyes staring at him.

"Oh, it's you…" Remus said, surprised when Godric leaped up onto the couch, and began rubbing against Remus, a purr rising in his throat.

"Thanks…" Remus said, noticing that the cat was still extremely dirty, "Let's get you out of here…"

Remus knew his friends would be sad about it, but it was for the best. Besides, Remus thought, They'd probably eventually forget about it.

Remus walked outside and stood in front of the cat, "You can go now," he said but the cat didn't leave, in fact, it just sat there.

"I said you can go…" Remus said and suddenly, the cat turned around and made a purring noise. Remus saw Lily standing a few feet away, and the cat slowly padded towards her.

"There you are," she cooed, and scooped up Godric. "Did you find her?" Lily asked Remus and he realized this was probably Lily's cat.

"Oh… No, my friends did…" he said and Lily just smiled.

"Gotta return her now," she said and waved goodbye to Remus, which he shyly returned. She's nice I guess, Remus thought, and he didn't really realize that he was staring at her…
