The time skip had done wonders for Naruto and his team. Over the months, Naruto had honed his abilities in ways that surprised even him. His Earth Release was now second nature. He practiced creating Earth Talismans that could summon stone structures, fire off compact earth bullets, and even form a hardened armor around his skin. He smiled to himself as he punched a nearby boulder, the Earth Talisman around his fist shattering the rock into pieces with ease.
Nearby, Tayuya was hard at work as well. She was more focused on hand-to-hand combat, her strikes fast and precise. Every punch and kick was fueled by her determination to improve. She had also been dabbling in water-style jutsu, learning how to control the flow of water like a second limb. The training was brutal, but she thrived under it, her skills becoming sharper each day. After sparring with Anko regularly, she had become faster, more efficient with her movements, though she never missed an opportunity to throw in a snide comment here and there. She smirked as she landed a spinning kick against a practice dummy, sending it flying.
Fu had made leaps and bounds in her training as well. Her connection with her tailed beast had deepened, allowing her to manifest insect-like skin that gave her more durability in battle. She had even started using Fire Release, adding a dangerous edge to her arsenal. The fire danced at her fingertips as she practiced forming fireballs, launching them at targets with deadly precision. Despite the power she wielded, Fu's personality remained gentle and warm. She always checked in on her friends, ensuring they were doing alright.
Fuka, on the other hand, had taken a different path. While she wasn't as interested in becoming a ninja full-time, her skills as a tailor had flourished. She apprenticed under a local designer and spent most of her days creating custom outfits. She still knew a few jutsu, but her heart was in a peaceful life. The others respected her choice, understanding that not everyone had the desire to fight constantly. Fuka was happy with her decision, and that was all that mattered.
Tayuya had moved in with Anko, much to Naruto's amusement. "Big Sis" Anko had made it clear that she wasn't about to let Tayuya sleep at Naruto's apartment. "I'm definitely not letting you crash with him," Anko had said, her arms crossed and a knowing smirk on her face. "You'll be staying with me, kid." Tayuya had rolled her eyes at the time, but secretly, she didn't mind. Living with Anko had its perks, and the two of them had bonded over their mutual love for pranks and sarcastic banter.
Karin had remained close to Naruto, but they hadn't yet traveled to the Land of Waves. She had been busy with her own training, but today was different.
Today was the day of the graduation test.
Naruto, Tayuya, and Fu stood at the entrance of the training grounds, feeling confident. They had spent months preparing for this day, but there was no nervousness among them. They were ready.
Anko stood before them, arms crossed and a mischievous grin on her face. "Alright, you three," she began, her voice light but authoritative. "Your final test is this: you pass."
Naruto blinked, confused. "Wait... what?" he asked, scratching the back of his head.
Anko chuckled. "I'm skipping the test," she explained, waving her hand dismissively. "Honestly, none of you need it. You're already more than capable. I've watched you train, and there's no point in putting you through an exam for stuff you already know."
Tayuya smirked. "So, you're just handing out headbands, huh? Guess I won't complain."
Anko nodded, pulling out three headbands and tossing them to each of them. "Yup, and if anyone asks, just tell them it was difficult and brutal. Maybe throw in some fake injuries for dramatic effect."
Naruto caught his headband and stared at it, feeling a wave of pride wash over him. "Thanks, Anko-sensei," he said, tying the headband around his forehead. It felt good—no, it felt right.
Fu giggled, securing her own headband. "That was… easier than I expected."
Tayuya just shrugged. "Hey, I'm not complaining. I was ready to kick some ass, but I'll take this."
Anko winked at them. "Enjoy the D-rank missions while you can. It's all grunt work for a while. Cleaning gutters, catching cats, that sort of thing. Welcome to the glamorous life of a ninja."
The next month passed in a blur of D-rank missions. Naruto, Tayuya, and Fu found themselves doing menial tasks like helping elderly villagers or running errands, much to their disappointment. The missions were easy but boring. It wasn't the kind of action-packed life they had imagined when they thought of being ninjas, but they knew it was part of the process.
One afternoon, while they were training together in the woods, Karin appeared, walking toward them with purpose. She waved as she approached, a smile on her face. "Naruto!" she called out.
Naruto looked up, surprised to see her. "Karin? What are you doing here?"
Karin stopped in front of him, catching her breath before speaking. "I'm here to ask you something. My team, Team 7, has been assigned a mission to the Land of Waves, and I got approval to bring you along."
Naruto blinked, the mention of the Land of Waves sparking a memory. He had promised Karin he'd travel there with her one day. He looked at her, then at his teammates. "You want me to come with you?"
Karin nodded. "Yeah. I thought it'd be a good time to head back to the temple and see if we can learn anything more about the Uzumaki clan. You made a promise, remember?"
Naruto smiled softly, nodding. "Yeah, I remember." He turned to Fu and Tayuya, both of whom looked a little disappointed but understanding.
"Guess I'm heading out for a bit," Naruto said, rubbing the back of his head. "I'll miss training with you guys."
Fu smiled warmly, stepping forward to give him a tight hug. "We'll miss you too, Naruto. Be safe, okay?"
Tayuya, never one to get too emotional, punched him lightly on the arm. "Don't go getting yourself killed out there, pervert. We've still got a lot of work to do."
Naruto laughed, nodding. "I'll be fine. Besides, you've got Anko to keep you busy."
Karin smiled, watching the interactions. She felt a sense of pride in her fellow Uzumaki. They were family now, and it felt good to be part of something bigger. As Naruto grabbed his things and prepared to leave, she couldn't help but feel excited for the journey ahead.
"Ready?" she asked as Naruto adjusted the new robes he had received from the girls.
"Ready," Naruto said, feeling the weight of the Uzumaki symbol on his back as a reminder of the journey ahead. He knew this mission wasn't just about the Land of Waves—it was about learning more about his heritage, and with Karin by his side, it felt like the right time to do just that.
Together, they set off toward the Land of Waves, leaving behind the training grounds but carrying with them the hopes of their newfound family.
Naruto met up with the rest of Team 7 at the gates of Konoha, his heart sinking the moment he laid eyes on Sasuke. The last thing he wanted was to spend time near his so-called ex-brother, but when he caught sight of Karin's pleading look, he knew he couldn't just walk away. She was family—distant, sure, but family nonetheless. She needed him, and despite everything, Naruto couldn't turn her down.
Sasuke's eyes lit up as soon as he saw Naruto, a flicker of hope flashing across his face. He straightened his posture, almost as if he thought this mission might be his chance to make amends, to somehow fix the chasm between them.
"Naruto," Sasuke greeted, his voice awkward but trying to sound sincere. "Glad you're coming along."
Naruto ignored him, his expression hardening. The sight of Sasuke brought back the pain of abandonment, of betrayal. He clenched his fists at his sides, willing himself to stay calm. Just focus on the mission, he reminded himself. He wasn't here for Sasuke.
Sakura, however, wasn't nearly as subtle. The second her eyes landed on Naruto, they narrowed into slits, her disdain palpable. She crossed her arms, standing beside Sasuke as if to reinforce her loyalty to him.
"Great," Sakura muttered under her breath, loud enough for Naruto to hear. "As if we needed any more dead weight on this team."
Naruto's jaw tightened, but he didn't respond. He refused to rise to her bait. Instead, he turned his attention to Kakashi, who seemed to be the only one actually focused on the mission.
"So," Naruto said, addressing Kakashi, "what's the deal with this mission? Why are we babysitting a bridge builder?"
Kakashi, his nose buried in his ever-present copy of Icha Icha Paradise, looked up lazily. "Simple," he said with a shrug. "We're escorting a man named Tazuna, a bridge builder, to the Land of Waves. He's in the middle of constructing a bridge that's vital for his village's economy. Our job is to make sure he stays alive long enough to finish it."
Tazuna, an older man with a bottle of sake in his hand, glanced over at the group. He looked the four young shinobi up and down, his eyes skeptical. "You've got to be kidding me," he grumbled, shaking his head. "They send kids? I hope you all know what you're doing. I don't want to end up dead because Konoha sent a bunch of teenagers to protect me."
Naruto raised an eyebrow at the man's comment but didn't say anything. He was already tense from being around Sasuke and didn't need to add another argument to the pile. He stole a glance at Karin, who was walking quietly beside him. She was focused, her expression serious as she clutched a scroll she'd been reading earlier.
Karin noticed Naruto looking at her and smiled softly. "I've been reading the scroll I found at the first Uzumaki shrine," she explained. "It talks about other locations for more shrines or temples scattered across the elemental nations. If there's time, maybe we could search for another one while we're in the Land of Waves."
Naruto's tense expression softened slightly. "Sounds like a plan," he replied, grateful for the distraction from his mounting frustration.
Sasuke, walking on Naruto's other side, seized the opportunity to speak up. "You know, Naruto," he started, trying to sound casual but there was a noticeable tension in his voice, "I've been thinking about what you said. About... about how I wasn't there for you. I get it, and I want to—"
"Don't," Naruto interrupted, his voice cold as ice. He didn't even look at Sasuke as he spoke, his gaze fixed on the path ahead. "I don't want to hear it."
Sasuke faltered, clearly not expecting such a quick dismissal. "Naruto, I'm trying to—"
"I said, don't," Naruto repeated, his tone more firm this time. The anger he'd been trying to suppress was bubbling to the surface, and it took every ounce of willpower not to lose his cool.
Karin glanced between the two of them, frowning. "Hey, maybe we should focus on the mission? We can talk about everything else later."
Sakura scoffed from behind them, her voice dripping with venom. "Focus on the mission? Please. Naruto can't even handle a simple conversation without blowing up. How is he supposed to protect anyone?"
Naruto gritted his teeth, but before he could respond, Kakashi stepped in. "Alright, everyone, that's enough," Kakashi said, his tone still relaxed but carrying a note of authority. "We're heading into a mission zone, and the last thing we need is bickering. Sakura, cool it. Naruto, focus on the task at hand."
Sakura huffed but fell silent. Naruto took a deep breath, trying to calm his rising temper. He hadn't wanted to come along in the first place, and now he was stuck dealing with Sasuke's attempts at reconciliation and Sakura's biting remarks. The only thing keeping him from turning back was the promise he made to Karin.
Tazuna, oblivious to the tension between the group, took another swig from his bottle of sake. "Well, at least your teacher seems like he knows what he's doing," he muttered. "But these kids... I just hope they don't get me killed."
Kakashi gave the bridge builder a lazy smile. "Don't worry, Tazuna. We've got this under control."
The group continued walking, the atmosphere thick with unspoken tension. Sasuke kept trying to engage Naruto in small talk, his attempts clumsy and transparent. "Naruto, you've really grown stronger," he commented, hoping to break through the wall Naruto had built between them. "I've seen the changes in your abilities."
Naruto didn't even glance at Sasuke. "I didn't do it for you," he said simply, his voice devoid of emotion.
Sasuke opened his mouth to respond, but the words seemed to die in his throat. He was running out of ways to bridge the gap between them, and it was becoming clear that Naruto wasn't interested in rebuilding anything.
As they made their way through the forest, the awkward silence was occasionally broken by the sounds of Sakura's muttering. "Dead weight," she whispered under her breath, glaring daggers at Naruto. "I don't know why Kakashi-sensei agreed to bring him along."
Karin, noticing Naruto's tense shoulders, walked a little closer to him. "Ignore her," she said softly. "You're here because you're strong, Naruto. You've got nothing to prove to anyone."
Naruto appreciated her words, but they did little to ease the knot of frustration in his chest. All he could do was keep walking, one foot in front of the other, and focus on the mission.
He just hoped that, soon, they'd reach the Land of Waves, because every second around Sasuke and Sakura felt like an eternity.
"Shut up, forehead. I don't know how you manage to walk straight with that boulder on your face. Oh, and don't even get me started on your eyes—are they even centered? One's droopy, the other looks like it's trying to escape. And let's not forget that flat chest and your non-existent ass. You have the figure of a board."
Sakura's face flushed with anger and embarrassment, her fists trembling at her sides. "You...you monster! How dare you talk to me like that?!"
Naruto just smirked. "Monster, huh? Maybe I am. But at least I'm not an ugly, useless ninja who can't even throw a proper punch without crying about it. All you do is chase after Sasuke like some desperate fangirl, hoping he'll notice you. Pathetic."
Sasuke, who had been listening to the back-and-forth, suddenly stepped in. "Sakura, enough. That's my brother you're talking about."
Naruto shot Sasuke a glare, the word "brother" hitting him like a slap in the face. "I told you to shut up, Sasuke. We're not brothers. You abandoned me, remember? You don't get to act like you care now."
Karin, sensing the escalating tension, moved between them. "Hey, calm down, all of you. This isn't helping anyone."
Sakura huffed, turning her nose up at Naruto. "Why would I ever calm down when I'm stuck with him? He's nothing but a walking disaster."
Tazuna, the bridge builder, rubbed his head, taking another long swig from his bottle of sake. "This is just great," he muttered. "I'm surrounded by kids who can't stop bickering. Just don't get me killed, alright?"
Kakashi, walking ahead of the group, sighed audibly but didn't intervene. His eyes stayed focused on the path ahead, clearly trying to ignore the squabbling behind him. He kept reading his book, pretending he wasn't listening, but Naruto could tell even he was growing weary of the argument.
"You're nothing but a monster!" Sakura repeated, her voice filled with anger. "A freak of nature! Everyone knows you don't belong here!"
Naruto was about to respond, his retort even more vicious than the last, but his senses flared. He noticed something—just a tiny detail out of place. There was a puddle of water in the middle of the path... despite the fact that it hadn't rained in days.
In the blink of an eye, Naruto vanished.
Sakura blinked, confused for a moment. "Where the hell did he—"
Before she could finish her sentence, Naruto was already behind the first ninja who had just emerged from the puddle, his hand moving like a blur. Without hesitation, Naruto snapped the man's neck with a sickening crack, his expression cold and detached, not even breaking a sweat.
The second ninja barely had time to react. Naruto grabbed him by the head, slamming his skull into the ground with enough force to leave a crater, the earth cracking beneath the weight of the impact. The man lay motionless, his body limp.
Naruto straightened up, dusting off his hands casually, as if he hadn't just killed one man and incapacitated another in less than a second. He walked back to the group, his eyes still filled with anger as he turned to Sakura. "Now, where were we? Oh yeah, something about me being a monster. Guess I just proved you right, huh?"
Sakura stood there, speechless, her face pale from the sheer brutality she had just witnessed. Even Sasuke looked shocked, his eyes wide as he processed what Naruto had just done.
Kakashi finally closed his book, walking over to the bodies. "Well, looks like one of them's still alive," he commented, crouching down to examine the unconscious ninja.
Naruto crossed his arms, his expression still hard. "Good. Maybe we can get some information out of him before I snap his neck too."
Kakashi shot him a warning look. "That won't be necessary, Naruto. Let me handle the interrogation."
He knelt beside the still-breathing ninja, pulling out a kunai. "Now, let's see what you've got to say," Kakashi said in a low voice, his usually relaxed tone turning deadly serious as he pressed the blade to the man's throat. "Who sent you?"
The ninja groaned, his eyes fluttering open. He looked around, dazed and clearly frightened by how easily his partner had been killed. "W-we were hired... to kill the bridge builder..."
Kakashi pressed the kunai a little harder against his neck. "Who hired you?"
The ninja hesitated, his breath shaky. "It was Gato... the businessman. He's the one who controls the Land of Waves. He doesn't want the bridge completed. It'll ruin his stranglehold on the village."
Kakashi nodded slowly, taking in the information. "I see. Anything else we should know?"
The ninja shook his head weakly. "That's all I know, I swear..."
Kakashi turned to the rest of the team. "Well, looks like this mission just got more complicated."
Naruto glared at the downed ninja before turning back to Sakura, who was still frozen in place, her eyes wide with shock. "Guess I'm more useful than you thought, huh? Who's the dead weight now?"
Sakura couldn't muster a response, the reality of what Naruto was capable of finally sinking in. She swallowed hard, trying to regain her composure, but the fear in her eyes was evident.
Karin, watching everything unfold, placed a hand on Naruto's arm, trying to calm him down. "You proved your point, Naruto. Let's just focus on the mission."
Naruto sighed, the adrenaline slowly draining from his system. "Yeah... whatever."
As the group continued walking down the road, the atmosphere was tense, to say the least. Kakashi, his ever-present calm demeanor hiding a flicker of frustration, stepped closer to the bridge builder, Tazuna. His one visible eye locked onto him.
"Alright, Tazuna," Kakashi said, his voice taking on a more serious tone than usual. "Time to come clean. What's going on here?"
Tazuna huffed, glancing away and scratching the back of his head. He seemed reluctant to answer, his eyes darting nervously between Kakashi and the rest of the team. "Well, uh, you see… we couldn't exactly afford a B-rank mission… So we, uh, paid for a C-rank instead."
Kakashi's eye narrowed. "You put my team in danger. We didn't know what kind of threats to expect. Hiring shinobi under false pretenses can get people killed."
Tazuna looked down, guilt clearly weighing on him, but he didn't respond right away. Instead, he took another long swig of sake before finally muttering, "We didn't have a choice. My village is poor, and Gato's thugs are everywhere. If the bridge doesn't get finished, my village is doomed."
Kakashi sighed deeply, rubbing his temple. "That's no excuse to deceive us, Tazuna-san. We're risking our lives out here."
He turned to the rest of the group. "Alright, this mission is more dangerous than we were led to believe. If anyone wants to turn back, now's the time to speak up. This is no longer a simple C-rank mission. We're dealing with high-level threats."
Naruto, Sasuke, Karin, and even Sakura all nodded in agreement, though Sakura did so reluctantly. "I'm not backing down," Naruto said firmly. "We're already here, and I'm not about to run away from a fight."
Sasuke, eager to prove himself, gave a curt nod. "Same. We can handle this."
Karin looked at Naruto, her expression resolute. "If Naruto's in, I'm in."
Even Sakura, though still visibly shaken, managed to muster the courage to agree. "Fine. I'll stick with the team."
Kakashi studied them for a moment, then nodded. "Alright, we move forward. But be on alert. No more underestimating what we're up against."
As they resumed their journey, the tension hung in the air like a storm cloud. Sakura, clearly still rattled by Naruto's earlier display of power, leaned over to Kakashi, her voice low and hesitant. "Kakashi-sensei… do you think Naruto would… kill me if I, you know, step out of line?"
Kakashi let out a deep sigh, his visible eye flicking toward Naruto, who was walking ahead with his hands in his pockets, seemingly oblivious to their conversation. "Maybe," Kakashi said quietly, "but if you want my advice, try getting along with him instead of antagonizing him."
Sakura, still clearly distrustful, crossed her arms and whispered back, "No way. He's a monster."
Kakashi raised a brow and replied, "Then keep your mouth shut when it comes to him." Sakura nodded, clearly shaken by the thought of further confrontation with Naruto.
Meanwhile, Sasuke, still determined to break through Naruto's emotional walls, walked up beside him. "Naruto," he began, his voice filled with that same strained sense of obligation, "I don't care what you say. We're still brothers, whether you like it or not."
Naruto didn't even glance at him. His voice was flat and cold. "We're not brothers, Sasuke. You made your choice. I made mine. Now stay out of my way."
Sasuke clenched his fists in frustration, but Naruto's indifference made it clear that nothing he said was going to change his mind. The rest of the team could feel the weight of the conversation, but no one dared to intervene.
For the next few days, they traveled in relative silence, save for the occasional remark from Tazuna, who mostly complained about the danger or the need to finish the bridge. Kakashi remained vigilant, constantly scanning their surroundings. He knew something was off—something was coming.
And then it happened.
They were walking through a particularly dense section of the forest when, without warning, a massive sword came spinning through the air, aimed directly at the group. Everyone ducked instinctively, diving to the ground as the giant blade whooshed over their heads.
Everyone except Naruto.
With almost casual ease, Naruto raised his hand, forming an Earth Release Talisman in his palm. The moment the massive sword came within reach, Naruto caught it, his hand wrapping around the hilt with a dull thud.
Sasuke, Sakura, and Karin all stared in disbelief as Naruto stood there, holding the giant blade as if it weighed nothing. Without a word, Naruto pulled out a scroll, sealing the enormous sword inside it with a few swift hand movements.
"Well, that was rude," Naruto muttered, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he sealed the weapon away.
Before anyone could react further, a figure appeared out of the mist. A tall, imposing man with bandages covering the lower half of his face. His eyes gleamed with malice as he stared at them.
"Impressive," the man said, his voice low and menacing. "Not many can catch my blade so easily."
Kakashi's one visible eye widened in recognition. "Zabuza Momochi," he said, his tone serious. "The Demon of the Hidden Mist."
Zabuza smirked, his eyes locking onto Naruto. "You're fast, kid. But let's see if you can keep up with this."
Naruto, unfazed by the sudden appearance of such a dangerous foe, just cracked his knuckles. "I'm not impressed. If you want your sword back, you'll have to come through me."
Zabuza chuckled darkly, his killing intent filling the air. "Oh, I intend to."
The rest of the team tensed, preparing for the inevitable fight. Sasuke's Sharingan activated, and Karin stood ready, her eyes flickering with determination. Sakura, despite her earlier fears, clenched her kunai tightly, though her hands trembled slightly.
Kakashi stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Zabuza. "Stay sharp, everyone. This isn't going to be easy."
Zabuza crouched, his hands forming seals. "Let's see what you've got, Leaf ninjas."
The battle was about to begin, and Naruto couldn't help but smirk. His eyes flashed with excitement, a mix of anger and determination brewing inside him. He was ready for whatever came next.
Naruto's chuckle echoed ominously through the mist as his body began to transform. His muscles expanded, his skin darkened, and his eyes burned with a fierce red glow. His hair turned a deep crimson, matching the color of the fox-like ears and tail that sprouted from his body. He glared at Zabuza, his bloodlust palpable.
"Let's see if you can push me to my limits," Naruto muttered, his voice lower and more dangerous. Without hesitation, he threw out a few talismans, which shimmered in the air before forming a chakra barrier around Tazuna, the bridge builder. "This should keep you safe," Naruto said casually, glancing at Tazuna before turning his full attention to Zabuza.
Zabuza's eyes narrowed as he assessed Naruto's transformation. "Interesting," he growled, forming quick seals with his hands. "Let's see if your speed can match your strength."
In an instant, Naruto vanished, blitzing toward Zabuza with a speed that left even Kakashi surprised. Zabuza reacted quickly, summoning a blade made entirely of water since he no longer had his giant sword. The two clashed in midair—Naruto's wakazashi meeting Zabuza's water blade with a sharp clang.
Naruto noticed immediately that the mist surrounding them was infused with chakra. He smirked, pulling out a set of water talismans and activating them. The talismans began to absorb the water chakra in the air, converting it into raw energy that Naruto could use. As they clashed, droplets of water evaporated and were pulled into the talismans, fueling Naruto's attacks.
Zabuza grunted, taken aback by Naruto's abilities. He hadn't expected the kid to manipulate the mist like that, and his usual tricks were being countered at every turn. "What the hell is this kid?" Zabuza muttered, his grip tightening on his water blade.
Naruto pressed forward, his movements becoming more fluid and precise. His second-stage curse mark had amplified his power to frightening levels. He slashed with his wakazashi, sending waves of chakra-infused energy toward Zabuza. The demon of the Hidden Mist struggled to keep up, his water blade being absorbed by Naruto's talismans faster than he could reform it.
In the midst of the fight, Kakashi jumped in, sharingan blazing, ready to back Naruto up. "Don't let your guard down, Naruto. Zabuza's dangerous," Kakashi warned, his voice calm but alert.
Zabuza's mind raced. He didn't know the full extent of Naruto's abilities, but it was clear that this was no ordinary shinobi. "This brat… I didn't expect him to be such a problem," Zabuza muttered under his breath, leaping back to gain distance.
Naruto, unfazed by Zabuza's retreat, grinned. "Running already?" he taunted, his voice dripping with confidence.
Zabuza gritted his teeth, forming more hand seals. "Don't think for a second you've won!" He slammed his hands into the ground, creating a thick mist that quickly engulfed the battlefield. This time, the mist was infused with even more chakra, making it almost impossible to see or sense anything.
"Let's see how you handle this!" Zabuza's voice echoed through the fog, coming from every direction at once.
Naruto, however, remained calm. He reached into his pouch and threw out more talismans, this time creating an air barrier around himself. The barrier began to spin, swirling the mist away from him as he moved forward, closing the distance between himself and Zabuza.
Kakashi, using his Sharingan, could see through the mist enough to keep up with Zabuza's movements. "Stay sharp, Naruto. Zabuza specializes in this kind of attack."
But Naruto was already ahead of him. With a flick of his wrist, he hurled a wind talisman into the air, creating a vortex that sucked in the mist and cleared the area around them. In the split second that the mist cleared, Naruto blitzed toward Zabuza, his red eyes glowing with ferocity.
Zabuza barely had time to react as Naruto's wakazashi came crashing down, slashing through his water blade like it was paper. "You're too slow!" Naruto shouted, his voice full of adrenaline.
Zabuza snarled, blocking with the remains of his water blade, but the force of Naruto's attack sent him skidding back, his feet digging into the ground.
Naruto smirked, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "This is more like it. Come on, Zabuza! Show me what you've got!"
Zabuza's eyes flickered with surprise and anger. He hadn't expected Naruto to be this powerful, and he could feel himself being pushed to his limits. "You're a freak," Zabuza spat, forming more hand seals to create a water dragon. "But I'm not done yet!"
The water dragon roared to life, charging toward Naruto with incredible speed. But Naruto didn't flinch. Instead, he planted his feet firmly and extended both arms. "Let's see how you handle this," he muttered, activating more talismans that surrounded him in a glowing barrier.
As the water dragon slammed into him, the barrier absorbed the impact, dispersing the water chakra into the talismans. Naruto, using the absorbed energy, redirected it back at Zabuza in the form of powerful chakra waves.
Zabuza barely managed to dodge, the chakra waves tearing through the ground where he had been standing moments before. He cursed under his breath. "This kid's got more tricks than I thought."
Kakashi, watching from the sidelines, couldn't help but be impressed. "Naruto's not holding back. He's really come into his own."
The battle raged on, but it was clear that Naruto had the upper hand. His speed, power, and use of talismans were overwhelming Zabuza at every turn. But Zabuza wasn't done yet. He had one last trick up his sleeve, and he wasn't going down without a fight.
"You've pushed me to my limit, kid," Zabuza growled, his eyes narrowing as he prepared his final move. "But let's see if you can handle this!"
The fight raged on, a whirlwind of violence and chakra as Naruto and Kakashi faced off against Zabuza and a new opponent—Haku, who had suddenly appeared from within Zabuza's sword. As Haku leaped out of the freezing blade, a series of ice mirrors formed around Naruto and Kakashi, their surfaces glistening in the misty air. Haku's speed was impressive, but Naruto's cursed second form granted him an overwhelming advantage in speed and power.
Haku moved swiftly, darting between the mirrors, his senbon needles flashing in the dim light as he slashed at Naruto with surgical precision. But Naruto was faster—much faster. His red eyes tracked Haku's every move, his body blurring as he dodged and countered.
"You're fast," Haku said, his voice soft but deadly as he reappeared inside one of the mirrors, "but let's see how long you can keep up."
Naruto smirked, his muscles tensing. "I don't need long," he growled. In an instant, he vanished, blitzing through the space between the mirrors, his wakazashi gleaming as it met Haku's senbon midair with a sharp clang.
Kakashi, his Sharingan glowing, was by Naruto's side in a flash, deflecting another one of Haku's strikes aimed at Naruto's blind spot. They coordinated their attacks seamlessly—Naruto's brute force and raw speed paired with Kakashi's finesse and deadly accuracy. Haku barely had time to move between mirrors as Kakashi's lightning release lanced through the air, while Naruto's water release talismans absorbed and redirected the ambient moisture from Haku's ice attacks.
"Naruto! Now!" Kakashi shouted, as his Chidori lit up the battlefield with crackling energy.
Naruto responded instantly, slamming a water release talisman into the ground. The talisman pulsed, drawing water from the atmosphere and creating a large wave that surged forward. Kakashi unleashed his lightning release, electrifying the water and turning it into a deadly combination attack.
Haku's eyes widened as the electrified water crashed toward him, but Zabuza was already in motion, slashing through the wave with a powerful swing of his frozen sword. "Not bad, kid," Zabuza said, his voice gravelly, "but this fight is far from over!"
Zabuza and Haku attacked in unison, their strikes perfectly synchronized. Zabuza's freezing sword clashed with Kakashi's kunai, while Haku darted between the ice mirrors, launching a flurry of senbon needles at Naruto. The barrage of attacks forced Kakashi and Naruto to go on the defensive, their focus split between the two deadly foes.
"I am Haku," the masked figure finally introduced himself in the heat of battle, his voice calm despite the chaos around him. "And I will protect Zabuza-sama with my life."
Naruto's eyes narrowed, his rage bubbling beneath the surface. "Then you'll die alongside him," he snarled, lunging forward with his wakazashi aimed at Haku's throat. But Haku disappeared into an ice mirror, reappearing behind Naruto with lightning speed.
Before Haku could strike, Kakashi intercepted, his Sharingan reading Haku's movements perfectly. "Naruto, don't let your anger cloud your focus!" Kakashi warned as he deflected Haku's needle with a well-timed kick.
But Naruto wasn't listening. His blood was boiling, his focus narrowing into a singular desire—kill.
Zabuza, sensing the change in Naruto's energy, smirked. "You're letting that power control you, kid. It'll be your downfall." He swung his freezing blade at Kakashi, the sound of ice cracking through the air as it collided with Kakashi's kunai once again.
"Shut up!" Naruto growled, throwing a handful of water release talismans at Zabuza and Haku. As the talismans detonated, sending waves of water crashing toward the two enemies, Naruto followed up with a series of rapid strikes, each one more vicious than the last.
Haku, using his ice mirrors, darted around Naruto, slashing at him with his senbon, but Naruto was relentless. He didn't need hand seals, he didn't need strategy—he was pure, raw force.
"I can feel it," Zabuza muttered, watching as Naruto's power continued to surge. "This kid's on the verge of losing himself. But that'll only make him more dangerous."
The battlefield became a blur of motion as Naruto and Haku exchanged blows, their speed so great that the others could barely keep up. Senbon needles clattered to the ground, blocked by Naruto's wakazashi, while Kakashi continued to hold off Zabuza, their weapons clashing with deadly precision.
"Haku! Don't hold back!" Zabuza barked. "Use everything you've got!"
Haku's gaze flickered toward Zabuza, then back to Naruto. "I never intended to," he whispered, forming a series of hand seals. The ice mirrors began to shimmer, growing in number until they surrounded the entire battlefield, creating a deadly prison of reflective surfaces.
"This is my ultimate technique," Haku said as he stepped into one of the mirrors, disappearing from sight. "Now, you will see why I am the strongest tool in Zabuza-sama's arsenal."
From every angle, Haku's image appeared, launching senbon needles with deadly accuracy. Naruto gritted his teeth, his body moving at lightning speed to block as many as he could, but a few still managed to find their mark, embedding themselves in his arms and legs.
Kakashi, struggling to keep up with Zabuza's relentless attacks, shouted, "Naruto! Stay calm! He's trying to overwhelm you!"
But Naruto wasn't listening. His rage was consuming him, his second-stage curse mark flaring with dark energy. He slammed his fist into the ground, creating a shockwave that shattered a few of the ice mirrors, but Haku was too fast, reforming them before Naruto could capitalize on the opening.
"You're strong," Haku admitted as he launched another barrage of senbon, "but strength alone isn't enough to win this fight."
Naruto's eyes glowed with fury as he pushed through the pain, charging at one of the mirrors with full force. His wakazashi slashed through the ice, but Haku simply vanished, reappearing in another mirror, unharmed.
"Damn it!" Naruto cursed, blood trickling down his arm from the senbon embedded in his flesh.
Zabuza and Haku continued their assault, their attacks perfectly synchronized as they pressed Naruto and Kakashi further. But despite the growing injuries, Naruto refused to slow down. His only goal was to kill.
"I will not lose," Naruto growled, his voice full of determination. "Not to you!"
The fight showed no signs of slowing, each side giving everything they had. Injuries piled up, but none of them had landed a fatal blow—yet.
Naruto stood in the middle of the battlefield, his breath ragged, his cursed mark pulsing with dark energy. But deep within, he began to push aside the anger, the burning hatred that fueled the mark. He thought of the people he cared about—Fu, Fuka, Anko, and even Tayuya. Their faces flashed in his mind, and the rage that once clouded his vision began to dissipate, replaced by a growing sense of calm and focus.
Naruto's eyes, still glowing red from the power of the curse mark, began to shift, becoming sharper, more deliberate. He wasn't just fighting out of rage anymore—he was fighting with purpose.
"Naruto," Kakashi called out as they stood back-to-back, fending off the relentless attacks from Zabuza and Haku. "You've got to stay in control. Don't let the curse take over."
Naruto nodded, his voice steady. "I'm in control, sensei."
With his mind more focused, Naruto began to see every weakness, every slight hesitation from his enemies. His strikes became precise, calculated. When Haku dashed between his mirrors, Naruto didn't waste energy chasing him aimlessly. He waited, reading Haku's movements with the calmness of a predator.
"There!" Kakashi shouted, as Haku hesitated for just a second too long between mirrors.
Naruto surged forward, slashing with his wakazashi, the blade whistling through the air. He narrowly missed Haku, who reappeared in a mirror a few feet away, but Naruto wasn't deterred. He could feel the momentum shifting.
Meanwhile, Zabuza, realizing the tide was turning, pressed harder against Kakashi, his sword of ice reforming in his hands. The thick mist he controlled began to swirl with an unnatural intensity, but it was no longer enough to confuse his opponents. Kakashi's Sharingan saw through the mist, and Naruto's senses, heightened by both the Nine-Tails and the curse mark, made it impossible for him to lose track of Zabuza's movements.
Zabuza lunged at Kakashi, aiming for a killing blow, but Naruto intercepted, using a water talisman to absorb the impact of the ice blade. The water evaporated into steam, filling the battlefield with even more mist, but Naruto could still see Zabuza's outline through it all.
"You're slipping, Zabuza," Naruto taunted, his voice cold. "You can't hide anymore."
Zabuza growled, frustrated. "You brat! You're nothing without that power. Let's see how you handle this!" He swung his sword again, but this time, Naruto didn't move to block or dodge.
Instead, Naruto's form blurred as he activated the Nine-Tails' chakra, his body surging forward faster than anyone could track. In an instant, he closed the distance between himself and Zabuza, his wakazashi glinting with deadly precision.
"No more games," Naruto muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.
With a brutal slash, Naruto's blade cut deep into Zabuza's chest, piercing through his flesh with terrifying ease. Zabuza's eyes went wide, shock replacing the cold confidence he'd once exuded.
"What—" Zabuza gasped, but before he could finish, Naruto's hand shot forward, his fingers wrapping around Zabuza's still-beating heart.
"You lost," Naruto said flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. In one swift motion, Naruto ripped Zabuza's heart from his chest, the sound of tearing flesh echoing in the now silent battlefield.
Zabuza's body staggered backward, his hands twitching as he looked down at the gaping hole in his chest. Blood spilled from the wound, staining the ground beneath him. His breath came in short, ragged gasps as the life drained from his body. "Haku..." he whispered, before collapsing into the dirt, his eyes glazing over in death.
Haku, who had been fighting off Kakashi just moments before, stood frozen, the sight of Zabuza's lifeless body rendering him motionless. His mask hid his expression, but his trembling hands revealed the depth of his shock.
Naruto turned to face Haku, his red eyes glowing menacingly. "Your master is dead," he said coldly. "There's nothing left for you here."
For a moment, Haku seemed to waver, his entire body shaking as he looked down at Zabuza's corpse. "Zabuza-sama..." he whispered, his voice cracking with pain. The bond between them had been deeper than mere loyalty—Haku had devoted his life to Zabuza. But now, Zabuza was gone.
Naruto took a step toward Haku, his wakazashi still dripping with Zabuza's blood. "Go," he said, his voice low and commanding. "Run while you can."
Haku stared at Naruto, his eyes wide with disbelief. He took one last look at Zabuza, his hands balling into fists at his sides. "I..." he began, but he couldn't finish. Instead, he turned and fled, vanishing into the mist as quickly as he had appeared.
Naruto watched him go, his grip on the wakazashi tightening for a moment before he let out a slow breath, allowing the curse mark to recede. His body returned to its normal state, though the Nine-Tails' chakra still hummed faintly within him.
Kakashi, having witnessed the brutal display, approached Naruto cautiously. "You did well, Naruto," Kakashi said, though his voice carried a hint of concern. "But don't let that power consume you."
Naruto didn't respond right away. He wiped the blood from his wakazashi, sheathing the blade as he stared at Zabuza's lifeless body. "I'm fine," Naruto finally said, his voice steady, but Kakashi could see the strain beneath the surface.
The rest of Team 7, having watched the fight in stunned silence, approached cautiously. Karin glanced at Naruto with concern, while Sasuke watched him with a mixture of awe and unease. Sakura, however, kept her distance, her face pale after witnessing the violence.
"Let's keep moving," Kakashi said, his voice firm as he stepped forward to lead the way. "We need to make sure Tazuna gets to safety."
Naruto nodded, casting one last look at Zabuza's body before turning to follow the rest of the group. The fight was over, but the tension in the air remained thick, as though a shadow still loomed over them.
The Nine-Tails stirred inside Naruto, a faint chuckle echoing in the back of his mind. "You did well, brat. But this is just the beginning."
They arrived safely at the bridge builder's home, a modest dwelling nestled near the half-finished bridge. As they entered, the bridge builder's family—his daughter Tsunami and grandson Inari—welcomed them with cautious smiles. They introduced themselves to Naruto and his team, exchanging pleasantries while Kakashi, feeling the weight of the battle, decided to get some much-needed rest.
Naruto, however, stood by the window, his eyes sharp as he watched the surroundings. He remained on guard, his body still tense from the fight. Sasuke, still reeling from witnessing Naruto's brutal power earlier, approached him cautiously.
"Naruto," Sasuke started, his voice hesitant, "what was that transformation back there? Where did those... features come from?"
Naruto didn't even turn to look at him, his expression hard and uninviting. "Not your concern," he replied flatly, his tone carrying the weight of finality.
Karin, standing nearby, chimed in, her curiosity piqued. "Is it some kind of Uzumaki technique? I mean, the ears, the tail... it's unlike anything I've ever heard of."
Naruto sighed, his patience clearly thinning. "I'm not interested in sharing anything about the curse mark or the other stuff," he said, his voice clipped. "Those are secrets I need to keep to myself."
Karin frowned but nodded in understanding, though disappointment was evident in her eyes. Sasuke, on the other hand, was less tactful. "You owe us an explanation, Naruto. We're supposed to be brothers, aren't we? You can't just—"
Naruto cut him off, his eyes narrowing dangerously. "I don't owe you anything," he said coldly, his voice dripping with venom. "And don't call me your brother. Now fuck off, Sasuke."
Sasuke's face darkened, but he didn't push the matter. The tension between them was palpable, but Naruto had made it clear that this was not a conversation he was willing to have.
Meanwhile, far away at the base where Zabuza and Haku had once planned their strategies, Haku found himself standing before their employer, a slimy man named Gato. The atmosphere was thick with disappointment and fury. Gato, pacing back and forth, was ranting.
"Zabuza? That fool was worthless!" Gato spat, his voice shaking with rage. "I paid him for results, and now he's dead! Dead! What a pathetic waste of money."
Haku's calm demeanor never wavered, but inside, something snapped. With the grace of a predator, he moved forward, his hand reaching out faster than Gato could react. In one swift motion, Haku gripped Gato by the throat, lifting him off the ground effortlessly.
"You will not insult Zabuza-sama," Haku whispered, his voice eerily calm, though his eyes betrayed the storm of emotions beneath the surface. Without a second thought, Haku twisted Gato's arm, the sickening crack of bone filling the room as Gato screamed in agony.
"Ahhh! My arm! You bastard!" Gato wailed, his eyes wide with terror.
Haku wasn't done. With the same unflinching calmness, he snapped Gato's leg, followed by the other arm and leg in quick succession. The sounds of bones breaking echoed in the room, each snap followed by a scream from Gato as he crumpled to the floor in a twisted heap.
The guards standing by hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do. But as they rushed forward, trying to stop Haku, they were met with precise, non-lethal strikes. One guard found himself disarmed, a senbon needle lodged in his shoulder, paralyzing his arm. Another was knocked unconscious with a sharp blow to the back of the neck. Haku moved through them with an eerie grace, disabling each one without breaking a sweat, leaving the guards incapacitated but alive.
As Gato lay on the floor, groaning in pain, Haku retrieved a length of rope, tying it tightly around Gato's broken limbs, ensuring he wouldn't be able to move. Gato whimpered, his bravado completely shattered.
"Please... no more... I'll pay you... I'll pay you whatever you want..." Gato begged, his voice weak and pitiful.
Haku knelt down, his face inches from Gato's, and spoke softly. "You are not worth killing. But I will make sure you never insult Zabuza-sama again." His words were delivered with chilling finality.
Leaving Gato bound and broken, Haku turned toward the door. His mind was racing, filled with memories of Zabuza's death at Naruto's hands. There was one person left he needed to confront—Naruto.
Without a word, Haku disappeared into the night, leaping from tree to tree, his heart heavy with a mixture of grief and determination. He would find Naruto, and they would settle this once and for all.
As Haku sped through the forest, his thoughts raced. "Naruto... I need to understand..."
Naruto stood outside, his hand gripping the mark on his neck, feeling its rhythmic pulse. It was under control—for now. But he knew the curse mark fed off his anger, magnifying every dark emotion within him. He took a deep breath, steadying himself. He had to keep it in check, or it would overwhelm him. Despite the risk, he was pleased he had been able to use it effectively during the battle with Zabuza. If not for the curse mark, things might have ended differently.
The air around him was still, but Naruto sensed something—soft footsteps on the rooftop above. His eyes narrowed, and in an instant, he whipped around, already summoning paper shurikens that hovered in the air around him, buzzing with the threat of immediate action.
Haku stood on the rooftop, his mask now removed, revealing his calm yet sorrowful face. The moonlight glinted off his dark eyes as they met Naruto's.
"Why did you spare me?" Haku asked, his voice quiet, but the weight of the question was immense. He stood motionless, the tension between them thick as fog.
Naruto didn't lower his guard. His shurikens remained poised to strike at any moment, but he didn't attack. He stared at Haku for a moment, his expression unreadable. "Why did I spare you?" Naruto repeated the question, almost as if he were asking it of himself. After a brief pause, he answered.
"It's obvious," Naruto said, his voice steady. "You weren't trying to kill me. You were only aiming to incapacitate, to slow us down. If you had truly wanted to kill me, you would have made it obvious. But you didn't. So why would I destroy a tool that wasn't designed to kill me?"
Haku's eyes softened at Naruto's words. "A tool," he echoed, almost to himself. "Is that really all I am?" He hesitated, then took a step forward, his posture no longer aggressive. "Naruto... I want to finish our fight. I need to understand something."
Naruto tilted his head, studying him. "You want to fight again? Why? We already fought—there's nothing left to prove."
"I need to know," Haku said, his voice firmer now. "I need to understand who I am without Zabuza-sama. You... you're strong, Naruto, but you also fight for something more than just strength. I need to see that for myself."
Naruto's eyes hardened for a moment, but then he stood up straighter, nodding slightly. He turned and began walking toward the forest, away from the village. "Fine. We'll finish this."
As they reached the edge of the woods, Naruto stopped and glanced at Haku. "One request," Naruto said, his voice serious. "If I win, you'll give me the location of your boss."
Haku nodded, his expression unreadable. "Agreed."
The moonlight filtered through the trees, casting long shadows as the two stood across from one another. The night was eerily quiet, with only the soft rustling of leaves in the wind. Naruto's paper shurikens hovered around him like sentinels, their sharp edges catching the moon's glow. Haku stood calmly, his ice mirrors forming a half-circle around him.
Naruto cracked his knuckles, his body tense but ready. "I hope you're ready for this," he muttered, his red eyes flickering with the energy of the curse mark.
Haku's gaze was unwavering. "I am," he said softly, his hands forming seals.
The two combatants stood in silence, the tension building with each passing second. The air between them seemed to hum with anticipation. Neither moved, both waiting for the other to make the first strike.
Naruto's pulse quickened, and his grip on his wakazashi tightened. He could feel the curse mark pulsing again, but he pushed the anger down, forcing himself to stay calm. "I have to control it," he reminded himself. "I can't let it control me."
Haku's eyes narrowed slightly, and his hands tensed, preparing for what would undoubtedly be their final confrontation.
And then, in the blink of an eye, the battle began.
Author's Notes:
OK guys, I have an announcement. I've been releasing chapters every day for a while now, sometimes even more than one a day. This was just meant to be a fun writing exercise, something to kill time while I take a break from working on my own book. Now, don't worry—I'm not saying I'm going to stop uploading chapters altogether. I want to be clear about that. However, I do plan to reduce the frequency a bit. You can expect new chapters maybe once or twice a week from now on.
If I weren't working on my book, I'd most likely still be putting out chapters daily. Writing is something I love, and this story has been a fun escape for me. I know some of you take this story seriously, and I really appreciate all the feedback and support. But between personal life and focusing on my own book, I've decided to slow down a bit.
That said, I'm also considering a different approach—maybe writing shorter chapters so I can still get content out more regularly without it being so time-consuming. Personally, I like writing longer chapters, around 8,000 to 10,000 words, but if shorter chapters are something you guys would be OK with, I'd like to hear your opinions.
I want to apologize for the delay with this chapter. I had some family stuff yesterday and couldn't write, and now I need to get back to focusing on my book as well. This is turning into a long author's note, but I just wanted to be open with you all and get your feedback on whether you'd prefer shorter, more frequent updates or the longer chapters I've been doing.
Thank you so much for your support! Please DM me or leave a review with your thoughts on how I should move forward. I appreciate every single one of you for sticking with me.
Thanks again!
