Chapter 4: "Collateral Damage"
The following days passed in a tense blur. Olivia buried herself in routines — preparing meals for Noah, keeping an eye on the limited updates from the outside world, and pretending that the man sleeping on her couch wasn't Elliot Stabler. But it was impossible to ignore him, impossible to ignore the storm of unresolved feelings that had only grown more intense with each passing moment.
Elliot, to his credit, had kept his distance — physically, at least. He didn't push her, didn't try to have another emotional conversation, but his presence was always there, looming like a shadow over every room he entered.
Every night, Olivia would retreat to her bedroom, carefully closing the door behind her as if it could somehow keep out the weight of their shared history. But even behind the safety of that door, she couldn't escape him.
And neither could Noah.
On the fourth night, Olivia was sitting on the edge of Noah's bed, watching him sleep, when a soft knock came at her bedroom door.
"Yeah?" she called out quietly, her voice tight with exhaustion.
Elliot pushed the door open a crack, stepping inside with an awkwardness she had never seen in him before. It was strange, seeing him like this — out of place, unsure of his footing. The Elliot she had known had always been so confident, so sure. But now, it seemed like he was walking on eggshells around her.
"Can we talk?" he asked softly.
Olivia sighed, running a hand through her hair. She was too tired for this, too emotionally drained to have another heart-to-heart. But she knew it was inevitable. They couldn't keep dancing around each other forever.
"Fine," she said, standing up and gesturing toward the living room. "Let's go."
They walked quietly through the small cabin, the only sounds coming from the creak of the floorboards beneath their feet. Once in the living room, Olivia took a seat on the armchair, while Elliot sat across from her on the couch — a safe distance, but still too close.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence between them was heavy, loaded with everything that hadn't been said in years.
"I didn't want to force this," Elliot began, his voice careful. "But I feel like we're going in circles. I know you're angry, Liv, and you have every right to be. But we're stuck here together, and we're not getting anywhere by avoiding each other."
Olivia crossed her arms, leaning back in her chair. "What do you want me to say, Elliot? That I forgive you? That I'm just going to forget the last ten years like they didn't happen?"
"No," he said quickly. "I don't expect that. I know what I did… walking away… I hurt you, and I can't take that back. But I need you to understand that I didn't do it to hurt you. I thought it was the best thing for everyone at the time."
Olivia's eyes narrowed. "The best thing for you, maybe."
Elliot flinched at her words, but he didn't argue. "Maybe you're right," he admitted. "But at the time, I thought it was the only way to keep my family from falling apart. I thought… if I stayed, I would lose them."
"And what about me?" Olivia asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What about what I lost when you left?"
Elliot's face fell, and for the first time in years, she saw the full weight of his guilt. "I know," he said, his voice cracking. "I know I left you alone when you needed me the most. And I've been living with that every single day. But I'm here now, Liv. I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere."
She wanted to believe him. God, she wanted to believe him so badly. But the scars from his abandonment still ran deep, and she couldn't just erase the years of pain with a few words.
"You say that now," she said, her voice hard. "But what happens when this is over? When the case is closed and Noah and I are safe again? Are you just going to walk away again?"
Elliot's eyes widened, a flash of pain crossing his face. "No. I'm not going anywhere this time."
Olivia shook her head, standing up and pacing the room. "You can't promise that, Elliot. You can't promise anything."
"I'm not that man anymore," he said, standing up too, his voice pleading. "I've changed, Liv. I've spent the last ten years trying to figure out how to make things right. And I know it's too late for us to go back to how things were, but I'm not walking away again. Not from you. Not from Noah."
At the mention of Noah, Olivia froze. Her heart skipped a beat, and she turned to face him, her eyes flashing with anger. "You don't get to talk about Noah," she snapped. "You don't get to act like you've been here for any of it. You don't know what it's like to raise a child, to make those sacrifices. You weren't here."
Elliot looked stricken, but he didn't back down. "You're right. I wasn't. But I want to be here now, Liv. I want to help you, if you'll let me."
Olivia shook her head, her emotions boiling over. "I don't need your help. I've been doing this on my own for years. Noah and I… we're fine without you."
Elliot's jaw tightened, and for a moment, she saw a flash of the old Elliot — the one who didn't back down from a fight. "I'm not saying you need me," he said, his voice low. "But I'm here, whether you like it or not. And I care about Noah. I care about both of you."
The intensity in his words hit her like a punch to the gut, and for the first time, she felt the walls around her heart start to crack. But she couldn't let them fall. Not yet.
"Why now?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Why did it take you ten years to come back?"
Elliot's eyes softened, and he stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "Because I was scared. I was scared of how much I cared about you, how much I needed you. And I didn't know how to handle it. So I ran. But I'm done running, Liv. I'm done."
Olivia stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She wanted to believe him, wanted to let herself fall into his arms like she had so many times before. But the fear of being hurt again, of being abandoned again, held her back.
"I don't know if I can trust you," she said, her voice breaking. "I don't know if I can let you in again."
Elliot took another step closer, his eyes locked on hers. "I'll wait as long as it takes, Liv. I'll prove to you that I'm not going anywhere."
The vulnerability in his voice, the raw emotion in his eyes, was too much for Olivia to bear. She turned away, tears burning at the corners of her eyes. She couldn't do this. She couldn't let herself fall for him again, not after everything.
But as she stood there, her back to him, she felt his presence behind her, felt the heat of him so close and yet so far.
"I'm here," Elliot whispered, his voice soft and steady. "I'm not leaving."
And for the first time in years, Olivia felt the weight of her walls begin to crumble.
But she wasn't ready to let them fall just yet.
