Chapter 6: "The Target"

The atmosphere in the cabin was suffocating, thick with urgency and fear. Olivia's hands shook as she threw clothes into a duffel bag, her mind spinning with worst-case scenarios. Noah was the one thing that made her feel grounded, gave her life meaning. The thought of him being a target? It made her feel like she was drowning.

Elliot moved swiftly through the cabin, speaking to Carisi in a low voice while keeping one eye on Olivia. She could feel his protective energy, could see the way his gaze flickered to Noah's bedroom every few seconds, as if silently promising to shield them both from whatever threat was looming.

But promises felt so fragile right now.

Carisi, visibly shaken but still trying to keep it together, approached Olivia as she zipped up the duffel. "Liv, I'm sorry to just show up like this, but we had no choice. This whole situation… it's bigger than we thought."

Olivia didn't stop moving, grabbing the essentials for Noah and stuffing them into the bag. "How did they find out about Noah?"

Carisi shook his head, his expression dark. "We don't know yet. But someone's leaking information. We think it's coming from inside the department."

Olivia stopped in her tracks, the realization hitting her like a ton of bricks. "You mean someone I know is doing this? Someone on the squad?"

Elliot stepped forward, his jaw clenched. "If there's a mole, we don't know who to trust. That's why we have to get you and Noah out of here. Tonight."

The thought of betrayal from within her own department, people she had trusted with her life, made Olivia's stomach turn. But she couldn't dwell on that now. The only thing that mattered was keeping Noah safe.

"I'll drive," Elliot said, grabbing the car keys. "We need to get to the backup safe house. It's about an hour away, and off the grid. No one will know where you are."

Olivia nodded, her mind already racing through their next steps. She scooped up Noah, who was still sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the danger swirling around him. She kissed his forehead, her heart aching with a fierce protectiveness.

As they all moved toward the door, Carisi stopped Olivia with a gentle hand on her arm. "Liv… we'll catch them. I swear we will."

Olivia's lips pressed into a thin line, her voice barely audible. "Just keep the squad safe, Carisi. Whoever's doing this… I'll deal with them when this is over."

Elliot gently took Noah from her, cradling him with a care that caught Olivia off guard. She hadn't seen him like this in years—so soft, so protective. For a moment, it stirred something in her, something she had tried to bury long ago. But she pushed it aside. There wasn't time for that now.

They piled into the car, the tension rising with every second. The forest around them was eerily quiet, the shadows of the trees stretching out like dark claws as they drove down the narrow, winding road. Olivia couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that any moment something could go horribly wrong.

Elliot drove in silence, his eyes fixed on the road. Carisi sat in the back with Olivia, checking his phone every few minutes for updates. But there was nothing. Just silence.

Too much silence.

Suddenly, from the corner of her eye, Olivia saw movement in the rearview mirror. Her breath caught in her throat as headlights appeared in the distance behind them. A black SUV, gaining speed.

"They're following us," Olivia whispered, her voice tight with panic.

Elliot's eyes flicked to the mirror, his expression hardening. "Hang on."

He slammed on the gas, the car lurching forward as they sped down the dark road. The SUV behind them roared to life, its headlights blinding as it closed the distance.

"Elliot!" Olivia shouted, her heart racing as the SUV got closer and closer.

"I see it!" Elliot growled, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. He swerved around a tight curve, trying to shake their pursuer, but the SUV stayed on them, relentless.

Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, shattering the back window of their car. Olivia ducked instinctively, covering Noah with her body as glass rained down around them.

"Shit!" Carisi cursed, pulling out his gun and rolling down the window. He leaned out, firing back at the SUV, but the bullets did nothing to slow it down.

Elliot's jaw clenched, and Olivia could see the calculation in his eyes. They couldn't outrun them. They had to fight back.

"Take the wheel," Elliot barked, his voice sharp.

"What?!" Olivia turned to him, eyes wide. "Are you crazy?"

"I'm going to stop them," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Take the wheel, Liv."

Before she could protest, Elliot pulled the car to the side, jumping out and sprinting toward the back. Olivia scrambled into the driver's seat, her hands shaking as she gripped the wheel.

Elliot crouched behind the car, gun drawn, as the SUV sped toward him. In the blink of an eye, he fired several shots, hitting the SUV's front tire. The car swerved violently, the driver losing control as the SUV crashed into a tree with a deafening crunch.

Silence.

Olivia's heart pounded in her chest as she watched Elliot carefully approach the wreck. She could see the fire in his eyes, that same fierce determination that had always defined him. He was relentless when it came to protecting the people he cared about. And right now, that included her and Noah.

Carisi ran to join him, gun at the ready as they closed in on the SUV. There was no movement from inside, no sign of life. But Olivia knew better than to let her guard down. She stepped out of the car, gun drawn, her eyes scanning the tree line for any other threats.

Suddenly, a figure stumbled out of the SUV — bloody, but alive. One of the men from the hit squad. Elliot moved swiftly, pinning him to the ground as Carisi cuffed him.

"You're going to tell us everything," Elliot growled, his voice low and menacing. "Who sent you? Who's the mole?"

The man laughed, blood dripping from his mouth. "You think this ends here? You're already dead. All of you."

Olivia's blood ran cold at the man's words. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

Elliot stood, his face grim. "Get him in the trunk. We'll take him to the safe house and get some answers."

Carisi nodded, hauling the man up as they dragged him back to the car. Olivia felt the weight of the situation crashing down on her. Noah was safe for now, but for how long? And how deep did this conspiracy go?

As Elliot returned to the driver's seat, Olivia glanced at him, her heart heavy with unspoken words. She wanted to thank him, wanted to tell him how much it meant that he was there. But the words stuck in her throat.

Instead, she just whispered, "I hope we're ready for what comes next."

Elliot's jaw tightened, his eyes never leaving the road. "We will be. No matter what."
