Chapter 1

The alarm goes off, Another Greenbean, I think.
"Newt!" Alby calls, "Come on, let's get the Newbie."
Alby and I stand by the edge of the box and wait. A group has gathered behind us and after about ten minutes, the alarm finally stops. I wait as a couple of boys pull the doors open. We all look down and a collective gasp runs through the group, there were boxes and supplies like usual, but there was no one inside the Box.

"Where's the Greenie?" Alby demanded as the Gladers voiced the same thought.
"Maybe he's hiding," I suggest.
Alby nods and jumps down into the Box, I follow behind him. I cup my hands around my mouth and yell above the din of the other Gladers' voices, "Oi, Greenie, get out here."
There's no reply and I look at Alby and shrug. He's getting impatient and angry, which is an Alby I'm far too familiar with and not a big fan of.
"You better get out here Greenbean, or I'll shucken throw off the Cliff myself when we find you."
"Alby," I say, and give him a look that says, Really? Too much. He only shrugs it off and looks around expectantly. I look around as well and almost gasp when I see who's in the Box with us. It's a girl! She steps out from behind a crate and I almost couldn't stop myself from exclaiming 'What!' I realise that my face must show how confused I'm feeling. I quickly gather myself and smile at her. She's cute, and the only girl, we'd have to be careful with her around the other boys. She's the first girl they'd remember seeing, a number of things could go wrong.

Suddenly, Alby just picks her up by the waist. She yells at him to put let her go and he tosses her out of the box.
"Really, Alby? Can't you be more careful with her?"
Alby and I start to climb out of the box with the help of the other Gladers.
"Newt, you know better than anyone else that we don't have time to treat every single Greenbean like a newborn baby."
"She's a girl!"
"That's exactly why she needs to jump right into it. We can't always be by her side to babysit her."
I sigh and shake my head; Alby can be so impossible sometimes.
Alby and I get out in time to see a crowd of boys all running in one direction. Alby runs after them to see what's up. I try to see myself, but my leg has been acting up and I'm not in the mood for running. The boys are all crowded around the Box again and I push my way to the front to see what's happening. I hear some of them laughing and cheering, the rest of them shift their weight between their feet uncomfortably. Then I hear a panicked yelp that couldn't possibly be from one of the guys. I'm finally able to see Gally holding the Greenie by her shirt collar over the gaping hole where the Box used to be. Anger wells up inside of me.
"Gally, leave her alone!"
The crowd of boys part like the red sea. I'm left with a clear path to Gally and he turns to me with a smirk,
"Come on, Newt. She's way more trouble than she's worth."
I've had enough of Gally and his shenanigans.
"Let her go."
Gally shrugs, "If you say so."

He lets her go and she falls, my eyes open wide with shock as she screams. But Gally calls out in pain and surprise, he looks down with his arm in the pit and starts shaking his arm. I realise that the girl must be hanging on to Gally's arm. Clever girl, I think to myself as I smile a bit and rush to the edge of the Box hole to try and help her. I look over the edge and see her panicked face. I reach into the pit and offer her my hand. She reaches out for me but, before she takes hold, someone grabs my hair from behind and pulls me back.
