Lorali and Luke had gone away for the weekend after their wedding. Rory hadn't told anyone else about her news but she was sure it would come up over the weekend and Luke would know before they were home again. She didn't mind. Luke was the only person in the town that wasn't a gossip and would definitely keep the news to himself. It was Lorali who was more likely to let it slip. She knew it would be difficult to hide after a while but she wanted to know what to do before everyone knew.
Rory had hoped the conversation with her dad would have helped her make a decision. She hoped he hadn't seen through the 'I'm writing a book' cover but honestly, she needed guidance and there was only one person she usually took that from.
So she told her Mom.
But she hadn't really got the reaction she was expecting.
"Mom, I'm pregnant." It was so difficult to get those words out but she knew she had to. Every day she knew and didn't say anything just made it more difficult. It wasn't a good time but it had to be done, there was never going to be a perfect time.
"Huh." She looked back out at the town.
"Mom?"
"I don't know what to say kiddo, 30 years and you've finally made me speechless!"
"Mom I..."
Luke turned up just then with a bottle of champagne in his had waving the car keys with his other.
"Sorry to split you two up but if we want to beat the traffic we need to get moving."
"Yeh, of course. Have a great time." She hugged her mother and Luke and sat back on the step as they walked towards his truck. "Are you actually going to drink that?"
"No, Babette gave it to me, I'll exchange it for something better when we get there."
She sat there for a while but she knew she had to move soon otherwise Miss Patty would see her and know something was wrong.
Driving back to her grandparents house seem strange but so right at the same time. It reminded her of staying with them when she was younger, of Friday night dinners and parties and everything else she had been part of at the Gilmore house. Those had been the easiest parts of the book to write, the parts with her Grandfather. Driving up to their house now she realised she had started to cry, stupid baby hormones. At least she had the book, she knew where one part of the life was going at least, and she didn't have to think about the other part at the moment. She had told her mother, that was the important part.
